Hallo! I have been recently investigating Italian toponyms, mainly in comparison with those of Spain and France. Just started from Latium and then saw many similarities that hint back to other times and peoples. However much of the material looks IE to me, but strangely Celtic even though in areas never settled by Celts (e.g. Astura, Cremera, Avens rivers, Caenina, Ameriola, Medullia old Latin towns). But of course we have also many Mediterranean (vague concept that hides perhaps 3 or 4 different things) substrate toponyms: Sala does not mean island here but rather marsh.

On the topic Italian scholars have done much work since late XIX century. I found online works by F. Ribezzo, C. Battisti (little) (both pupils of Meyer-Lubke), G. Alessio, and also the Swiss J. Hubschmid, maybe they are all well known to you. Others are V. Bertoldi, G. Devoto, G. B. Pellegrini, F. Nocentini.
