Conflict of interest notice[edit]

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Neal D. Barnard, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with,
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors,
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Business' FAQ. For more details about what constitutes a conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. To be clear, I don't think the edits you have made are particularly problematic, but I just thought your should be aware of our policies. Best wishes. Rockpocket 20:16, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting[edit]

Hello again, Neal. Considering your reverts today, you don't appeared to have paid much heed to my conflict of interest notice, above. There is a few issues here that we should probably address. Firstly, if you are not the Neal Barnard then you are welcome to continue editing the article, but should probably change your username. I can help you do that. If you are the subject of the article, or are acting on his behalf then you really need to stop reverting the article to a whitewashed version.

I have tried to be as balanced as I can in my rewrite, there is some more, largely positive, material I wish to add, but I am waiting to get hold of a source I have requested. Everything else is sourced to 3rd party reliable sources. I have asked another experienced editor (who is sympathetic to Barnard's beliefs) to review the article for balance once I have finished, so you can be assured that this is not an attempt at a hatchet job on Barnard. If you have serious concerns about the content and would like to discuss them privately, feel free email me. If you are Barnard and would like to speak to someone else, see Wikipedia:Contact us/Article problem/Factual error (from subject). I have also asked for additional eyes here, feel free to comment. Rockpocket 00:22, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, the email link is here (though you will probably have to have your email preferences activated for it to work, see Wikipedia:Emailing users). Rockpocket 02:21, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, if you would rather not activate email, we could discuss it here. Do you have concerns about the factual basis of some of the content? Is something incorrect? I appreciate it doesn't all paint Barnard in the post positive light, but our job is provide neutral coverage off all aspects of his work, both the controversial and the positive. I have invited other editors to review my edits for balance, so there should be a third perspective soon. Rockpocket 02:36, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I sent you detailed comments pointing out factual errors and other issues, supporting my edits before I made them. I see that you did not recieve them. What is the best way to communicate with you? Please appreciate that people who are used to email, telephone, etc., may have trouble navigating these various communication modes, and apparently I've not succeeded. I would like to communicate with you to clear this up.

Also, do you have a supervisor I can speak with?

Neal Barnard, MD

Hi Neal. I didn't receive that email, I'm afraid. I do appreciate the idiosyncrasies of Wiki-editing can be confusing to those not familiar with it. I generally prefer not to list my email address publicly, but if you wish to communicate with me you can use Rockpocket@gmail.com
However while you are welcome to email me, unless there are privacy issues we generally prefer to discuss articles on talk pages, so all interested parties can contribute. So you can also voice you concerns at Talk:Neal D. Barnard if you wish.
I don't have a supervisor per se you can speak with, Wikipedia doesn't work that way. Instead we all supervise each other. I am an administrator here and a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Animal rights, so have a fair idea of what is and is not appropriate material for a biography such as yours. Nevertheless, if you have serious concerns about the contents of your bio you can contact the Foundation at info-en-q@wikimedia.org (see Wikipedia:Contact us/Article problem/Factual error (from subject) for more details). However, I would recommend you express your concerns on the article talk page first, as we will be happy to address any concerns you have according to our policies, we just need to know what they are. Message for you[edit]

Note for you here. Cheers, SlimVirgin (talk)(contribs) 07:03, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neal, you have now violated our policies by reverting more than three times in a 24 hour period, you have been edit warring without any attempt at discussing your concerns and you have been repeatedly removing sourced material from an article over which you appear to have a clear conflict of interest. You are already liable to be blocked for WP:3RR, however before reporting it I'm offering you one last chance to discuss your concerns rather than simply remove content. If you revert again, however, I will seek administrative action. Unless you acknowledge your concerns and identify yourself as Barnard, you also risk being indefinitely blocked for impersonation. Please realize that Wikipedia is not a place to promote oneself, it is an encyclopaedia. We are very interested in working with you to correct inaccurate material, but it is not appropriate for you to exercise editorial control of your own article. Thanks. Username[edit]

Hi NealBarnard. We cannot know if you are Neal Barnard or someone impersonating him. This "on the internet no one knows you are a dog" issue is described in the WP:IMPERSONATE policy. If you would like to continue using this account and editing as Neal Barnard, would you please send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org to go through the verification process that we have? Be aware that emails are handled by a volunteer response team and that it may take a while before you receive a reply. Alternatively you can request a change of your username by completing this form, but this is not at all required, and of course writing things like this will no longer make sense. I do appreciate your being forthright! There is just this funky "impersonation" thing. Best regards Jytdog (talk) 18:56, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your kind message. As you've suggested, I sent an email to verify my identity, and hopefully that process will go smoothly. As I mentioned, I'm new to the editing process, and I'll beg your indulgence. Nonetheless, there are a number of things that could improve this article, and I'd like to bring these suggestions forward, if I may. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.9.24.240 (talk) 19:15, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Neil, a vegetarian activist here back in the day. Maybe review your page's history and see what has been removed or added. It would be nice if you would venture out from your page and edit others, both in your field and in your other interest areas (or just random pages, you'd be surprised how a paragraph break or two improves the flow of some articles), but whatever your level of involvement, welcome back. I fully expect Wikipedia or its editors to win the Nobel Peace Prize at some point, and its importance in the sharing of information grows by the second (literally. check out the second item on my talk page for an interesting sound-image map of English Wikipedia edits in real time), so any input into the project is valuable and helpful to the growth of collected human knowledge. Enjoy. Randy Kryn (talk) 19:52, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Identity confirmed[edit]

I consider that ticket number #2017102310011681 coming from the @pcrm.org domain is sufficient verification of Mr. Barnard's identity, and will leave a note to that effect on this talk page and the article's talk page. Ben · Salvidrim!  20:03, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, both of you! Jytdog (talk) 01:55, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

October 2017[edit]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at Talk:Neal D. Barnard, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. Ben · Salvidrim!  21:30, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia from the Wikiproject Medicine![edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia and Wikiproject Medicine

Welcome to Wikipedia from Wikiproject Medicine (also known as WPMED).

We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of content about health here on Wikipedia, pursuing the mission of Wikipedia to provide the public with articles that present accepted knowledge, created and maintained by a community of editors.

One of our members has noticed that you are interested in editing medical articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board!

First, some basics about editing Wikipedia, which is a strange place behind the scenes; you may find some of the ways we operate to be surprising. Please take your time and understand how this place works. Here are some useful links, which have information to help editors get the most out of Wikipedia:

  • Everything starts with the mission - the mission of Wikipedia is to provide the public with articles that summarize accepted knowledge, working in a community of editors. (see WP:NOT)
  • We find "accepted knowledge" for biomedical information in sources defined by WP:MEDRS -- we generally use literature reviews published in good journals or statements by major medical or scientific bodies and we generally avoid using research papers, editorials, and popular media as sources for such content. We read MEDRS sources and summarize them, giving the most space and emphasis (what we call WP:WEIGHT) to the most prevalent views found in MEDRS sources.
  • Please see WPMED's "how to" guide for editing content about health
  • More generally please see The five pillars of Wikipedia and please be aware of the "policies and guidelines" that govern what we do here; these have been generated by the community itself over the last fifteen years, and you will need to learn them (which is not too hard, it just takes some time). Documents about Wikipedia - the "back office" - reside in "Wikipedia space" where document titles are preceded by "Wikipedia:" (often abbreviated "WP:"). WP space is separate from "article space" (also called "mainspace") - the document at WP:CONSENSUS is different from, and serves as a different purpose than, the document at Consensus.

Every article and page in Wikipedia has an associated talk page, and these pages are essential because we editors use them to collaborate and work out disagreements. (This is your Talk page, associated with your user page.) When you use a Talk page, you should sign your name by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comment; the Wikipedia software will automatically convert that into links to your Userpage and this page and will add a datestamp. This is how we know who said what. We also "thread" comments in a way that you will learn with time. Please see the Talk Page Guidelines to learn how to use talk pages.

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on our talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. You can also just add our talk page to your watchlist and join in discussions that interest you. Please leave a message on the WPMED talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • The Wikipedia community includes a wide variety of editors with different interests, skills, and knowledge. We all manage to get along through a lot of discussion that happens under the scenes and through the bold, edit, discuss editing cycle. If you encounter any problems, you can discuss it on an article's talk page or post a message on the WPMED talk page.

Feel free to drop a note below if you have any questions or problems. I wish you all the best here in Wikipedia! -- Jytdog (talk) 01:56, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
