Winter solstice[edit]

Sir, concerning your edit to winter solstice. While I note that the sol invictus section may have erroneously originally stated "celebrated when the duration of daylight first begins to increase after the winter solstice" from 22 to 25 and you have taken to correct the time period as the 25th after 6 days of solar "stand still," I'm concerned this is an inaccuracy. For if at the time of the festival the solstice occurred around the 25th then that would mean that a 6 day "solar stand still" would last 3 days beyond the 25th at that time in history. The celebration cannot begin both during the solstice and 3 days after. Could you clarify? Thanks.Some thing (talk) 05:20, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, no problem. The solstice day was then and is now the same day, the 21st Dec. For three days before the 21st and three days afterward the movement of the sun is imperceptible. The 25th is the first day that the dawn of the sun can be perceived to have moved North from its most Southerly solstice position. Sol Invictus celebrates that movement as a sign that the sun is victorious over darkness. I hope this clarifies things a bit. Mrpearcee (talk) 05:58, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
