Salem Userbox Not Working?

{{User:UBX/User Salem Trials Interest}} (user name MBX, box title Salem Trials Interest) Welcome home from your vacation. I tried to use this box on my own user page today, but it kept falling off the right side of the frame (attached at its left edge to whatever box precedes it), unlike all the other boxes there. I don't know if you're the right person to ask, or what could be wrong, or if it is something I can fix by editing the box myself. Any ideas? It seems to be fine here, although it is left-aligned rather than right-aligned, as I would have expected. —— Lisasmall 19:54, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure what was going wrong, but your userpage looks fine now, so I'll assume you've fixed it. —METS501 (talk) 05:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mets, just a quick note to say thanks for participating in my request for adminship. It was successful and I now have some shiny new buttons. If I can ever be of help, please let me know. Happy editing, mattbr 09:52, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

TTN and AWB

Despite my earlier misgivings of TTN and your warning, TTN is abusing AWB (as predicted) by mass adding notability templates to articles without even reading them. Other editors are complaining about this as well[1]. I ask you to do something about this. -N 18:42, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Mets is on holiday. TTN's AWB access has been removed - [2]. Reedy Boy 18:53, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot and licence templates

Hello, MetsBot is doing a very useful job in regards to images available on Commons. Thank you for running it. It, however, seems to choke on templates such as {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}} and {{GFDL-en}}, saying it can't verify the copyright status. The images seem to be OK otherwise. So, unless I'm missing something, whitelisting these templates could be an improvement. Conscious 14:30, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Question

Hey Metz I have a quick question. When you have time, can you give me a brief run through on what you put into cmd.exe or whatever you use to launch your bot when you use C#? Also, could you take some screen shots too please :-)? I'm trying to learn how to get C# bots to launch. I can do it with python, but I can't seem to do it with C#... thanks! ~ Wikihermit 22:28, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Depending on whethers its command line or graphical... I'd presume he'd just have a function called on loading that will do whatever it needs to do... If it was graphical, it would be on the form load, or if it was text based, it would be on the initialise or similar... Reedy Boy 14:44, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Yup, I've figured it out. ~ Wikihermit 18:25, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

v4 Release

Me and Steve are thinking we'll release AWB v4 in Beta to all users....

Opinions?

Oh, and welcome back!

Reedy Boy 18:55, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, sounds good to me. I haven't been around, but I'll assume that most of the bugs have been sorted out. I'd go ahead a release it but not make the update mandatory and also include a message that warns against running unassisted bots with the new version in case of undiscovered bugs. We should also make the official title "4.0.0.0 Beta" to make it clear. But how can we indicate the beta in the [assembly: AssemblyVersion("VERSIONHERE")] structure which only takes numbers? —METS501 (talk) 19:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Well... 27 outstanding bugs... Nothing really major... Theres been a few people using it, and nothing major has come up, so i think its safe. It must also become 4.0.0.1 - ie as we had put out the v4 as an alpha release thingy. Just to keep it all seperate... We could just put it in the title bar of AWB..? Also, how do we only bug people on v4...? Reedy Boy 19:25, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Admin assistance

Hello, have noted you have been familiar with this debate. Could you please keep an eye on Provinces of Italy? The user Rarelibra insists on removing valid references from Encyclopedia Brittanica. He is pushing a convention that knows no English usage and one he backs alone as an editor. He/she is certainly free to have their opinion, however, going and consistently blanking other references from preferred English-based sources in order to push his/her POV is just.. nonsense. thank you. 71.109.183.44 00:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for writing. I'm unfortunately not going to step in here; just the fact that I'm an administrator does not give me any editorial privileges, and I don't really have the time and energy to mediate in a conflict like this. If you would like, you can always refer to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and pick a method from that page. Also, I suggest that you register an account; you'll find you're treated better my many other editors and administrators that way. —METS501 (talk) 03:25, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok, will do, and thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this user went ahead again and cleaned out the EB references, put in his own (incorrectly) again trying to push his POV. I was hoping at least an Admin could warn this user to stop blanking out valid, and recently added, references. Isn't this vandalism to continually remove valid references from Wikipedia, without even a reason given?? Sad.. thank you again. 71.109.183.44 05:30, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Like I said, it is wrong to continually remove valid references from Wikipedia, but keep in mind that you're doing the same when you're reverting him, so no one really wins. References can differ in their information too, remember. —METS501 (talk) 12:25, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Infobox parameters

Quick question, I noticed your bot coming in behind mine and making a few minor changes to the paramters of {{Infobox City}}, such as area_total to area_total_km2. Is this a recent change to the template itself, or am I just fantastically stupid and have been doing it wrong all along? Anyway, I'll adjust the bot so it inserts the infobox with the adjusted parameters so you don't have to go clean up behind it.

Feel free to let me know if I do anything else fantastically stupid :) ɑʀкʏɑɴ 23:09, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm actually not sure how new it is, but yes, it's the result of a recent change. It was requested on WP:BOTREQ that a bot go around updating the parameters, so I took the job. I'm sure that when you wrote your bot code the infobox was the old way, so don't worry, you haven't been doing anything fantastically stupid :-) —METS501 (talk) 03:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Arkyan, the changes to Infobox City (aka Infobox Settlement) were done many months ago. Another editor said they were working on a bot and could incorporate the parameter name changes into their bot. Their bot never came online so I asked if someone else's bot could handle it. A full explanation table of all the parameters is viewable at {{Infobox Settlement}}.
Mets, Is the bot done doing its thing? —MJCdetroit 12:02, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Yep :-) And I've done the protected pages on my main account, so now it's really all done. —METS501 (talk) 12:34, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Now I'll work on removing the deprecated names from the code. —MJCdetroit 12:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
For some strange reason the bot missed about 5 pages. In any case, I fixed them. —MJCdetroit 14:33, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, I suppose I should be keeping a closer eye on the bot-related pages :) I'm fixing the code now so that it no longer uses the deprecated parameter names. Thanks for letting me know. ɑʀкʏɑɴ 16:54, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot functionality

Please ensure that your bot is functioning in article mainspace, and not userspace as it did with User:SwissCelt/Youngstown. Thank you. -- SwissCelt 20:42, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry for editing if you don't want bots editing your userspace, but for a task such as the one my bot was performing, if the bot had not made the edit, the infobox would have stopped working on all the pages the bot skipped, so therefore I deemed it appropriate to edit all occurances of the infobox, no matter what namespace they were in. —METS501 (talk) 21:06, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot problem

Your bot tagged Image:USA-Kulwicki Grandstand.jpg ready for deletion after it been had marked as now commons only 2 days after it was tagged, opposed to the 7 days in the criteria. --Michael Greiner 15:16, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm...I actually didn't think of that. Maybe I'll have my bot notify the uploaders to bypass the 7-day requirement. —METS501 (talk) 15:21, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Sarcasticidealist reffered you to me. He said you might be able to help me with my userbox; {{User:Lighthead/Photek}}. I was trying to post it onto the listing of userboxes under musical artists, but the page went all sorts of wonky. I was wondering if you knew what that was about or if you recommend I tweak the code on the listing (in terms of my own userbox, not anybody elses). Well anyway, I'm open to anything. Like I was telling him I was going (n)fucking (f)nuts. Thanks so much. þ 06:29, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I've fixed the userbox and added it to the main directory. I'd like to add though, please fix your signature so you aren't double-posting on all talk pages. It's also common courtesy to have your username in your signature, instead of just a symbol. —METS501 (talk) 18:39, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

I asked somebody else this question, but they appear to not be online; anyway here's the question, it's regarding an image I have on wikipedia called Bison running.jpg: How do I send Bison running to the Commons? Re: Canvassing

Hello.

Apologies on my behalf, I didn't realise that notifying people who have significant interest/contributions the article in question at AfD (a mere 3 posts in all from me) qualified as canvassing or spamming.

I'll be mindful to be wary of your hideously low threshold for this in future. Regards, Liverpool Scouse 00:06, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

 • I'm always mindful of being civil - please understand I'm not trying ot be deliberately obtuse here. Whilst there may have been slight bias involved in one or two of the edits, agreed, I don't think that 3 edits constituted being "on a scale that exceeds that of ordinary interpersonal correspondence" (to quote WP:CANVASS), considering those involved were those who I have regularly discussed the article in question with. It's my opinion that the canvassing policy was created to prevent much more direct canvassing and spamming on a much grander scale than my 3 edits. However, that's my opinion and as you're ultimately the admin here I guess we can just agree to disagree and I'll take your request/warning on board of course. Liverpool Scouse 00:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
 • It's no problem, I can see why such messages are left of course, as canvassing of enough people can skew AfD debates such that they don't present a true representation of the community view. This one isn't such a major issue either way really so I'll hold my hand up to being a bit too defensive at first. Your good nature is appreciated! Liverpool Scouse 00:24, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

"How is that vandalism?"

The user was adding specific birthdates for characters, which the shows have never given. You have to read the talk page and the edit history. There have been other IPs doing this recently as well. I blocked him for the usual 24 hours. Daniel Case 00:48, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Spurios VS/AWB Error

Hey Mets, Were you getting a spurious error regarding loggingsettings1 and something to do with serialisation last night?

I was... But i dont know if my pc was just being painful as it was getting too warm, it did freeze twice...

Reedy Boy 09:08, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I've been getting that on and off for a couple of days when editing AWB, seemingly for no reason. —METS501 (talk) 12:35, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Hmm... I just get in VS before i build AWB... Must be a reason for it... Reedy Boy 17:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
By "editing AWB" I meant editing the source code :-) —METS501 (talk) 19:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
So its not just me.

Culprit code i think prefs.LogCategoryName = ((MainForm)ParentForm).LoggingCategoryTextBox.Text;

((MainForm)ParentForm).LoggingCategoryTextBox.Text = prefs.LogCategoryName;

That would possible fit the bill.... Reedy Boy 21:07, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

FYI, i've just commented that out in my version for the moment ;). Not commited to SVN tho Reedy Boy 21:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
And it solved the problem? Awesome —METS501 (talk) 21:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Seems to, aye. Just it *is* needed by the logging tab - ie if your using $Category.. Really needs moving onto the logging tab... Reedy Boy 21:52, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Moving the control won't help (although is desirable from an aesthetics point of view) :) Also, please don't comment that out and forget it - it needs to be fixed not removed. Perhaps a try catch would help? Do they work at design time? I think they do... No idea why's that happening though, haven't experienced it myself, and don't have time to investigate right now sorry. --kingboyk 10:36, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
It was more of a temporary fix so i could develop without the errors - Hence not commiting it. The errors comething from the Cast bit (MainForm)ParentForm - so moving onto the control would solve the issue, but i know what you mean. Reedy Bot 18:58, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
If you get chance Mets, you could see if you could move the category text box from below the edit summary box onto the logging control and fix those lines ;) Reedy Boy 21:17, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Alright, I think I've got it. Can one of you check out rev 1521 and make sure it still works correctly, since it's pretty hard to check when I don't know really what the category box is supposed to do in the first place. :-) —METS501 (talk) 02:14, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Looks fine to me :) Reedy Boy 19:21, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot request for Infobox City Japan

Hi Mets501,

Do you think that you could have your bot switch some paramter names in an infobox like it did with Infobox Settlement (but on a smaller scale)?

For {{Infobox City Japan}}, I need to have the following fields switched {{{Area}}}-->{{{Area_km2}}} and {{{Density}}} to {{{Density_km2}}}. There are about 400 pages that transclude the template, so it should be fairly quick work for your bot.

Let me know if you can full this request. Thanks, MJCdetroit 18:15, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

So its just a basic Find and Replace? Reedy Boy 18:50, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Yep. I'm doing it now. —METS501 (talk) 19:53, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

It was because the apostrophe in the name was not handled correctly by the bot. I'm going to fix it now :-) Thanks for reporting. —METS501 (talk) 12:48, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Metsbot

Metsbot seems unable to detect Image:85' Cadillac Convertible (30)b.jpg and Image:85' Cadillac Convertible (2)b.jpg on Commons, even though both images exist in Commons. Also, could you check if I did the Commons process correctly for Image:20070429 LaGraveField 002.JPG as the bot has rejected the description/licensing. It is a long time since I last {{nowcommons}} something. - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 18:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

With regard to the two images that you first mentioned, they have an apostrophe which which throwing off the bot (a bug which has now been fixed). As far as the other image, keep in mind that it's very important to the licensing and source information be preserved when moving to Commons, so if the bot is at all unsure, it says MetsBot was unable to determine if this image has proper license and/or source information on Commons. It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong (in this case, everything looks good), but something about it made the bot unsure, so it said so :-) —METS501 (talk) 18:15, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, upon investigation, it looks like the cause of the message was the bot not knowing what {{User:Louis reed/Image Copyright}} was in the source code. —METS501 (talk) 18:16, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining. - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 18:19, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Building AWB without Visual C++

Im right in thinking you dont have VS pro/whatever... How do you build AWB?

As ive had User:OsamaK asking me

Cheers

Reedy Boy 23:13, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Yep, you're right :-). Checkout the latest SVN revision and download the most current release. Place the wikidiff2.dll file from the latest release into the AWB\AWB\bin\Debug and AWB\AWB\bin\Release folders. Then load Visual C# and load the project file "AutoWikiBrowser no-Wikidiff". Then compile normally. —METS501 (talk) 03:10, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, Where is "AWB\AWB\bin\Release" I find "AWB\AWB\bin\Debug" only. --OsamaK 14:24, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Don't be sorry :-) First you have to go to "build" -> "build solution" in VC# and let it fail, and you will find the directory's magically created. —METS501 (talk) 15:18, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Because my user name is different on commons to wikipedia it says that I have not been credited with uploading the image. Can you help sort out this problem please. TIA Macr237 08:49, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

I've just added your English Wikipedia username to the commons page. It's always safer, since you never know if it's actually the same person or not, even if the person uploads to commons saying it is their own image. —METS501 (talk) 15:20, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Have i missed a commit?

Reedy Boy 21:39, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I think rev 1517 covered it. The one where you wrote "Complete the easy ones now wont you mets ;)". Remember? :-) —METS501 (talk) 23:11, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot commons tagging problem

Hi there - first time I've tagged an image on the basis that it's on Commons (having moved it to Commons myself, using the same file name) and your very handy bot says that the Commons image has a different name. Doesn't appear to be an apostrophe or anything similar to puzzle it, though. Image in question is Image:Jesus2ndQuad.JPG. If you get a chance to look at this and tell me if I've made a mistake, I'd be grateful. Regards, BencherliteTalk 01:01, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

The only mistake you made was the template (this edit fixed it), well, MetsBot can tell us if you made other mistakes when it rechecks the image :-) The bot sort of freaked out when it saw the malformed template, and spurted out a random message. I'm putting it protection against that now. Thanks for letting me know about the bug! —METS501 (talk) 01:50, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, not sure what happened there - I checked at WP:CSD, saw that the template was {{nowcommons}}; so I typed that and was told to subst it and use {{ncd}} or {{ncd|filename}}, and I did the latter. Perhaps the confusion was caused because I added the filename unnecessarily when it was the same on commons and WP. Delighted to be another bug-finder for you; I will now go to bed and think of lots of ways of confusing your poor bot! Thanks for tidying up after me. BencherliteTalk 01:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, that works now, doesn't it? Well done! BencherliteTalk 02:13, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Haha, thanks :-) Yep, it seems to work. —METS501 (talk) 02:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot

I just wanted to let you know that MetsBot does an excellent job. It helps me out a lot when moving images to Commons. Happy editing! --Boricuaeddie 01:04, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks :-) Happy editing to you too! —METS501 (talk) 01:50, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Your major controbutins/aritclas made section

Im pretty sure you said you italicised the ones you created but anyway i felt it was hard to read in italsied i think you should make them a differnt color for those who dont have the best vision. kkthxbye(ForeverDEAD 05:49, 19 August 2007 (UTC))

OK, I'll try that. —METS501 (talk) 23:45, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot mistake

MetsBot appears to have made a mistake. It claims that Image:Cycle graph C4.png was uploaded to Commons with a different name, but that isn't the case. --Sopoforic 01:22, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Ah, it's the underscore that's doing it. Fixed now. Thanks for letting me know. —METS501 (talk) 05:24, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Re:Test in AWB Menu

No real purpose, just enabled on debug mode - I found it useful for testing stuff ;)

No worries!

We've got the Size, Position, and anchors of the edit box to deal with....

See Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Dev#Expand_edit_box

That does them all (not completely successfully) with the exception of position...

Think ive done it! Reedy Boy 20:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Looks good! —METS501 (talk) 01:57, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I've re-added the div tag per a talk request. On most other MediaWiki pages for anons, I would definitely agree that it would be unnecessary to have. However, this particular message shows up on top of the edit box for all anon users, and though they can't have MediaWiki CSS, they can have client-side versions, which they might customize using this tag, especially if they edit Wikipedia a lot anonymously. Like I said, most anon-specific pages it wouldn't matter, but I think that in this case, there's a likelihood of anons wanting to hide this via CSS using Opera or an extension because it shows up every time they go to edit a page. Cheers. --MZMcBride 20:00, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

For that matter, who said anything about hiding it? Suppose I'm making a new skin for Wikipedia, which I want to upload to http://userstyles.org/ so that others can use it (so whether I'm a registered user or not, I'd want it to look good to everyone). I might want to, say, put a box round this message and change the font size, so it fits with the rest of the skin. This is impossible without the id attribute, as there's no way to refer to the message using CSS. Anyway, it's good practise to name distinct parts of the document like this, even if one doesn't see an immediate need to refer to them individually – to be honest, all the interface messages should have ids (well, except the ones that render as plain text...) -- 81.155.69.74 21:48, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
OK, sorry about that. I'll admit: I didn't really think it through. Both of you are right. —METS501 (talk) 01:58, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Strange Thing

Someone just made a subpage on your other account: User:UBX/Back To The Future. -WarthogDemon 05:02, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know :-) I usually allow other pages to be created there, but that wasn't a userbox, just a line of text, so I deleted it. —METS501 (talk) 12:31, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
