RE: Non-free use disputed for File:MICRO13_01334.jpg & File:Mawqef_Micro_Poster.jpg

Hi Melesse,

You have tagged the above files as "disputed use of non-free media" because you think the rationale I provided for each file is not valid. I honestly did not understand why. Can you please be more specific to where you see the problem is? I am sure I understand the Wikipedia:Non-free content policy and I have used a template from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline, I think I followed the instructions carefully and the only thing I was unable to do is to resize the images to a lower quality since I don't know how to do that to an already uploaded file, is that the reason or is there something else to be considered?

Regards,

kaminobatto (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 15:44, 22 September 2010 (UTC).

Please carefully read criteria #2 of the non-free images policy which deals with respect for commercial opportunities. Your rationales explicitly state that having the images on Wikipedia will compete with the official copyright holders, which isn't compliant. Melesse (talk) 05:58, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

RE:RE: Non-free use disputed for File:MICRO13_01334.jpg & File:Mawqef_Micro_Poster.jpg

Hi Melesse,

Thank you for the clarification, I wrongfully understood criteria #2 the other way around! However, I have reduced the images' quality and amended the rationale accordingly.

Kindly have a look and let me know if everything's in order now. Also please feel free to remove the older higher quality version.

Many thanks and regards for your prompt assistance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaminobatto (talkcontribs) 13:25, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of fair use files

Below are files you have listed because you feel that they can be substituted. I beg to differ. I have explained my reasons on the appropriate discussion pages.

As I have retired as a user, I will probably see any other messages after a decision has been taken.

You have also put a similar remark on a file I uploaded at the same time yet I was not notified. I have added my remarks to that file as well.

I have removed your remarks from my talk page to this page, it is up to you what you wish to do with these remarks, leave them, delete them, but please do not put them back on my talk page.

Sorry to have made your life miserable but I feel that the upload was reasonable under current policy. --JHvW (talk) 20:10, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:JW-zztopposter.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:JW-zztopposter.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 19:21, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

While I can appreciate the zeal in making sure that fair-use images are not orphaned, you left a note on my page all of two minutes after I had uploaded the image to say that it would be deleted if it went unused. Please at least use a modicum of common sense before doing something like that - you're not helping, and only serving to piss off other editors. --fuzzy510 (talk) 01:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:NBF_LOGO.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:NBF_LOGO.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 08:53, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Article National Balloon Facility is supposed to carry this image, however the image isnot being displayed in this article despite giving the link. If you can help, I would be obliged. Regards Sarvagyana guru (talk) 18:08, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

File:Rosaroimages.jpg

Hi there Melesse, it seems you deleted File:Rosaroimages.jpg under F8, but the Commons file doesn't seem to be under the exact same name. So now, the file is a red-linked image still being used in the article Rosario, Santa Fe. — ξxplicit 03:06, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind, it was deleted on Commons shortly before I posted this message. Sorry for the bother. — ξxplicit 03:11, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

What the heck is NFC #8?

Do you think you could link the policy or guideline you are referring to? I have no idea where to find it. I think the problem was that I put brackets around the article name in the template. I've fixed it. What that it? Yworo (talk) 03:46, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I did give you a link to the Wikipedia:Non-free content policy. Read item #8, your file has a bigger problem than brackets. Melesse (talk) 10:31, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
The book is part of a series. The covers of that notable mass-market edition with traditional "Sword and Sorcery" art are used on every other article in the series. See:
  1. Tales of Nevèrÿon
  2. Neveryóna
  3. Flight from Nevèrÿon
  4. Return to Nevèrÿon
As you can see, I am trying to be consistent in the presentation of the covers by including the better-known covers of the first paperback editions on the articles. Now, if you want to nominate some image for deletion, please nominate the totally uninteresting recent reprint covers I've removed from the articles:
  1. File:Delany Tales-of-Neveryon.jpg
  2. File:Delany_Neveryona.jpg
  3. File:Delany_Flight-from-Neveryon.jpg
  4. File:Delany Return-to-Neveryon.jpg
Could you please review this and reconsider precisely which files should be nominated for deletion? Yworo (talk) 14:53, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I've added text to the article discussing this specific cover and why it is notable (with source) and am therefore removing your deletion tag. Feel free to nominate the uninteresting reprint covers for deletion before someone adds them back to the article. Yworo (talk) 16:11, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
Hello, Melesse. You have new messages at Jerash's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hi Melesse--Thanks for the heads-up (three weeks ago!); you'll be happy to know the file in question is no longer orphaned.MxxL (talk) 18:53, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Tower_of_Pallets,_ca_1955.jpg)

I didn't know how to handle this. Does the horse come first, or the cart? I must have put the cart before the horse and apparently that is wrong. I am working on a draft off line and want to enter the complete new article all at once with the picture. I am testing to see how the picture might look in the new article draft. One reason I want to enter it as a new article all at once is for a DYK entry. The article name will be "Tower of Pallets." Could you give me about 3 weeks to put it all together? Next time I will put the horse before the cart and write up the draft first and add the Fair Usage picture at the last moment, then introduce the new article with the picture. You can answer on your Talk page as I have a temporary watch on it.--Doug Coldwell talk 21:07, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, next time don't upload the image until the article is either finished or about to go up in a few hours or less. I don't typically deal with actual deletions anymore because there are some very efficient bots and other admins who always get to them long before I do. I think the best course of action here would be a {{hangon}} tag and an explanation in the file's talk page, or working on the article in your userspace. Melesse (talk) 01:41, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Done.--Doug Coldwell talk 12:03, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, this image you uploaded doesn't seem to be its first edition cover. The Olympia Press edition cover can be found here. I would be happy to replace the file, if you wouldn't mind. What would you say? --BorgQueen (talk) 11:05, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

I just replaced it with a smaller version to comply with fair use rules. Thanks for the tip. Melesse (talk) 22:13, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Melesse, I uploaded the above image. When I uploaded it, the drop down didn't seem to have anything that fitted. Now I am unsure of where to go on the page to insert some information. It is a newspaper advert, at the moment I think it seems to be 'fair Use'. Is this correct as far as you know? Circumspects (talk) 03:48, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure what license it falls under myself. Try asking here. Melesse (talk) 05:23, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Divine Comedy - Something For The Weekend excerpt.ogg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Divine Comedy - Something For The Weekend excerpt.ogg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. KrakatoaKatie 04:20, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

This file was tagged on November 28, but it seems you were not notified. As a courtesy, I've reset the seven-day period to begin today and expire on December 12, after which it can be deleted under CSD#F6 without further notice. Thanks for your contributions to the encyclopedia! :-) - KrakatoaKatie 04:20, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Possible vandal/sockpuppeter.

Hi Melesse. I'm new here, and don't really know what I'm doing, lol, But, I was told that you work with sockpuppet cases and photos. I read the page about the Lisa Gerrard vandal, and I do believe the same vandal/sockpuppet, is back, uploading the "illegal" photos under the name Gandalf1982. That user only edited the page or edited anything that involves Lisa Gerrard, and delete the legal photos. I don't want to accuse that user, but it seemed fishy to me.

If its the actual sock of that person, what is the best possible way to prove the accusation?

Cheers.

QuoteTheRavenHair (talk) 04:47, 18 December 2010 (UTC)QuoteTheRavenHair

Hello. I actually pretty much only work with images. I've only requested a sockpuppet investigation once, and another administrator closed it for a completely different but equally valid reason, so I'm actually not the best person to ask when it comes to questions about sockpuppets. You can read up on the CheckUser policy here and find somebody who can do that for you. Melesse (talk) 06:17, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh ok, so I basically post the same stuff as I did here? Thanks, lol.

Yeah, pretty much, except they'll actually be able to run a check unlike me. By the way, you may want to also mention that their two uploaded images were deleted from Commons as copyvios from Getty images. Melesse (talk) 22:32, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh right, lol. Thanks again.
