Concern about Charges of Racism at the International Criminal Court (ICC)[edit]

Hey! My friend goes to UCSD. :)

The article Charges of Racism at the International Criminal Court (ICC) is, unfortunately, not suitable for Wikipedia. The issue is that it necessarily presents a highly selective point of view. Hi Ovinus, I am not sure how that is a "highly selective" viewpoint given how much information on that assertion is available in the public domain, including scholarly works that speak to that claim. Marloow (talk) 19:59, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding here. Wikipedia eschews what are often called POV forks, which present topics (in this case, the ICC) in an overwhelmingly positive or negative light by selectively using information. There are occasional standalone articles for criticisms which have an extremely high degree of coverage (e.g., Criticism of the Bible, Criticism of the Quran), but these are the exception to the rule. In any case, such articles must still presented neutrally and dispassionately; in its current state, your article is extremely non-neutral (for example, by using the world bedeviled). Cool. Two points to keep in mind: It is likely better to eventually merge the information into International Criminal Court#Criticisms, rather than having a standalone page on racism in particular. (That being said, that section is already fairly long, and thus an article Criticism of the ICC may be warranted, although I'd recommend community discussion at a place like the neutral-point-of-view noticeboard before creating such an article. Criticism articles are controversial.) Also, if you have strong opinions on racism at the ICC, be particularly careful on how your biases may unintentionally leak into your work. Charges of Racism at the International Criminal Court (ICC) moved to draftspace[edit]

Okay, I can add additional independent source. I have already cited David Holie's "Justice Denied: The Reality of the International Criminal Court" along with a link to Africanews, a newspaper that first reported Burundi's withdrawal from the world court, partly due to the charges (of racism). Hey Marloow, just adding on to Ovinus's comment above -- the draft will need to be completely rewritten to comply with Wikipedia's neutrality policies. At the moment it reads more like a political opinion piece than a Wikipedia article. One of Wikipedia's five pillars is neutral point of view:

We strive for articles in an impartial tone that document and explain major points of view, giving due weight for their prominence. We avoid advocacy, and we characterize information and issues rather than debate them. In some areas there may be just one well-recognized point of view; in others, we describe multiple points of view, presenting each accurately and in context rather than as "the truth" or "the best view". All articles must strive for verifiable accuracy, citing reliable, authoritative sources, especially when the topic is controversial or is about a living person. Editors' personal experiences, interpretations, or opinions do not belong on Wikipedia.

Hm. I'm afraid I'm not sure how these Wiki Education Foundation courses go, but perhaps your instructor Bergmanucsd can offer guidance? I am skeptical of the idea that you should be only researching "charges of racism at the ICC" as a first major contribution. Perhaps the ICC in general, instead? I see your additions to the ICC page were reverted for being unsourced. I'd suggest to stick to sandbox and draft space for now and wait for instructor guidance. It looks like the idea is you each choose an article topic (in this case you chose "Charges of Racism at the International Criminal Court") and then you write about it for a couple weeks for class? Alright, that section does look like it needs some TLC. Try to keep your work brief, though, and well sourced; if it's too long others will probably see it as undue criticism. Also, instead of citing articles as you've done (as a raw, inline external link), use ref tags like this one.^[1] See Help:Referencing for beginners for more complete info. I’m not sure what he’s talking about… there is already a page called International Criminal Court which has a lot of information, so a new article called that would be redundant. Here's a suggestion: choose an ICJ case which hasn't been developed well on Wikipedia. E.g., Aerial Herbicide Spraying (Ecuador v. Colombia), which Ecuador mostly won. Tons of sources available (e.g. [1]), but no Wikipedia article. I really think this would be a good start for you, and I would be willing, to a reasonable extent, to guide you through the writing and citation process. There should be no original research published on Wikipedia (which your posting had). There should be no arguments made on wikipedia (which yours had).

Wikipedia is meant to be an impartial encyclopedia. Your previous contributions don't fit the spirit of wikipedia. You should be posting facts (not opinion).
