25th dynasty template

Dear Markh, I had to undo your 25th dynasty Nubian template: [1] and made the appropriate corrections to the table because it erroneously placed Alara as a member of this dynasty. Kashta, his successor, may or may not have been a member of this dynasty (since he controlled parts of Upper Egypt) but Alara certainly was not a 25th dynasty king since he never controlled any region of Egypt in his reign. Perhaps you can delete that template which you created to remove Alara and create a newer one because I don't know how to edit templates. Regards, Leoboudv (talk) 10:18, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Wow! I'm really impressed with all the extra work you put in to add more footnotes. I passed the article for GA in the first place, knowing that you had talent, and now feel very reassured. I came very close to reverting all of GaryColemanFan's fact tagging, a practice which I hope [s]he doesn't continue as it was totally excessive. Although there are a plethora (read: too many) of inline comment tags such as {{fact}} and {{huh}} etc. extensive and detailed commentary on specific passages goes better on the talk page or on the reassessment page imo. When I put this article up for FAC review, all I got was vague 'not enough references', etc. So it was actually useful to have all the citation requests - although there were a large number of them! Markh (talk) 15:00, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
I see that you have expanded the lead section, and it looks good. I am confused about the first sentence in the second paragraph: "With the 2005 discovery of a new chamber, the valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers, and the majority of the burial places of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, together with those privileged nobles." Does this mean that it contains 63 tombs and chambers and that it includes the majority of the burial places of major royal figures, etc.? If so, would you be okay with something along the lines of "...63 tombs and chambers, which comprises the majority of the burial places..."? The way it reads now, it seems like something is missing (like something will be said about the majority of the burial places in the second half of the sentence). The only thing that leaves on my list is the "Decoration" section. The more I think about it, however, the more I realize that it would be hard to say much more without creating a need to go into great detail. There are 63 tombs, so the current section might be best kept as is to give a general overview. Readers who want to know more about the decoration of KV62 could just read the article on KV62. You're more knowledgeable in this area, though, so do you think it's best left how it is now, or is there more that you think should be added? GaryColemanFan (talk) 16:25, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
There is lots that CAN be added, but whether it should be is the question. Each of the tombs is unique, only the progression should probably be noted here, both in decoration and layout. Markh (talk) 16:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Commons Account

Do you have a WikiCommons account? Have you considered uploading your Egyptian images to Commons like this: Image:Bubastis portal at Karnak.jpg so that non-English WP sites can use it.   • If you have 1, 2, 3 or more good and clear photos of the reliefs and/or architecture of Kalabsha and/or Beit el-Wali temples, I can always arrange them in an image gallery like I just did for this article on the Achaemenid era today: [2] (I believe there was a pylon in the Beit el-Wali temple, for instance and some columns. I just uploaded a few pictures of the unique Oxus gold statuettte, chariot, medallions from a flickr owner who was happy to place them on Wikipedia in this image gallery--I had told him all Commons images are CF free. I can do the same for Kalabsha and/or Beit el-Wali...as long as the images are clear and not fuzzy or out of focus, or too dark or bright. As they say, a picture or two (or three) says a thousand words. I mostly wrote the article on king Ps. I of the 21st dynasty but without a good Commons image like this which a flickr image owner agreed to alter the license: Image:Psusennes I mask by Rafaèle.jpg, it would have lacked context sadly.   • Dear Markh, On second thoughts, don't worry about Kalabsha. Someone on flickr agreed to allow an image to be placed on it. I also have a new Commons image for Beit el-Wali. Thanks for your help though. Just remember: if you upload images on WikiCommons, everyone on all the foreign language sites can use it. I ran across a beautiful picture of a temple in Nubia--only one problem. It was uploaded on German WP which meant it could NOT be used on English, French, Spanish, Indian, Chines, etc WP. Gerf Hussein

What happened to the colossal standing statues of Ramesses II in the peristyle court of Gerf Hussein? They are not in this new picture: Image:Reconstructed Gerf Hussein.jpg Were they abandoned to the Nile or moved to Aswan museum. Just curious. --Leoboudv (talk) 21:10, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

I think that they were largely destroyed (before the reconstruction). If you look at the picture carefully there is the bottom half of a figure in front of the rear right hand column. There is a statue in the Nubian museum that is Gerf Hussain (I think). Markh (talk) 22:17, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

The underground part of the temple is obviously now lost under Lake Nasser. From what I remember of the statues they were rather dumpy and not classically Egyptian. Markh (talk) 19:34, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

New articles

  • Just to let you know I created 3 articles here on Egyptian temples in Nubia: Amada, Temple of Maharraqa and Kiosk of Qertassi. I think they are well sourced and written overall...given the (rather) few book sources I could locate on them. I also managed to find a few images for them...thank god! By the way, would I be impertinent to briefly ask if you could tell me the general region where you live--are you in the West, or East coast of the US or in Europe? I find it can be hard to contact the best editors and Admins on certain issues since they are mostly in Europe which is 8-9 hours ahead of Western Canada where I am.   • Thank you for the response. I did not know your Egyptology lecture was included by Lorna Oakes. Her book was very detailed--by far the best analysis of the Egyptian New Kingdom temples in Nubia. I am in Metro Vancouver, Canada. Now that I have finished writing my articles on the smaller Egyptian tombs, I will take a break from writing new articles now as I was a little fatigued by the research.   • Are you by chance an Egyptologist? I know a few real Egyptologists but I write articles on Ancient Egypt mostly as a hobby since it caught my interest when I was at University in the 90's. I would say the biggest problem with WP articles on AE is not that they are inaccurate or filled with WP:OR but that they are mostly just stubs or completely unsourced...one cannot determine where a piece of information came from. I wonder what is your take on the situation? BTW, I [re]wrote this article on TT8. Before I got involved, someone labelled it a 'dead end page' which shows the poor quality of the prose on the subject--one of the greatest finds in Egypt before Tut.     • I have a qualification in Egyptology, but I am truely a rather obsessive amateur. Good work on TT8 by the way. Yes, most articles are full of utter rubbish, especially the Great Pyramid article, I've stopped even looking at it. Markh (talk) 16:59, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
    • There are Admins including Weller who monitor these sites which tend to be populated by crackpots. He is in your city too and comes from a family of academics. My impression is that most AE articles are generally good but since they are unsourced, no one knows where the info comes from. At least AE is not like this article Kush which is a disgrace...because no cares about it. I'm written a few articles on some Kushite kings...but nothing more since I don't know much about the topic. --Leoboudv (talk) 01:11, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Egyptian hieroglyphs-Gardiner listed

Hello Markh. I wanted to start a small dialogue, since I know you know Ancient Egyptian material. I pretend I know some things; all I know is that after one works on the Rosetta Stone, the Stone of Canopus, the Amarna letters, and the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Hieroglyphs and Cuneiform, there is just no end to discovery. Mr. Budge must have felt like a Kid in a Candy Store, as many other adventurers of Archaeology, and undiscovered Human History. (Wikipedia, and wikipedians have now entered the same space!.)

Your adding the banners to the hieroglyphs is the purpose of talking: I assume that since you chose to put everything into "importance: Low" it was just the easy path. When I started the big "hieroglyphs of Egypt", I went to 'Commons' for the first time. It was about a 5-month effort creating the location for the compendium of "Category:Hieroglyphs of Egypt". I lately added the two "Utcheb" hieroglyphs, and was looking at the "tongue of land", but when looking up the word in Budge's 2-volume dictionary at utcheb, found the "dikebanks, etc". That was the s-shaped, the "Festival Parade Routes", as used in the Rosetta Stone, to celebrate festivals, with women with "garlands"(hieroglyph) in their hair. (I finally understood that the Big S hieroglyph isn't really related to its adjacent "intestine curl". (I questioned that it was.))

So I am talking of this: I am not sure what Egyptian H. deserve higher than "importance: low", but I want to suggest (since you Know) that the "Bread-cone" is super important. (MEDium). (It is on so, so, so many Pharaonic scenes.) See the Sed festival photo: (Pepi Sed festival goblet) [5]. What is so amazing about this is that I was showing somebody the photo, and saying that it says in both directions: "Given Living Kingship Forever", (the Kingship =Power), and while not facing her, she said: "Long live the King". It was a highlight of my day, and week. More amazingly, another 'psychic event' occurred (about this Sed goblet), because a very student-like person (who knows some Runes, and is a young-gamer-person) helped me work on the three columns-(for 4-6 minutes). (I was telling him of the Hieroglyph: Archaic dagger: (vertical dagger) [6], but he helped me understand the actual meaning of the 5-fold title: (Ancient Egyptian royal titulary). The three hieroglyphs above each column are 3 name-Categories for the Pharaoh: The first inspite of the what everybody may think is actually (according to my friend) the "Champion Name", (it is also the "Warrior Name"). I will not reveal more, but I now know the other two names for the other two columns read 2-1 to the right vs the left column-1. ....so I'm just establishing a little dialogue, and cheers, (from the HotDesert, SonoranDesert,Arizona, USA)... Invitation to workshops on editing Wikipedia

Dear Markh,

We are a team of researchers at the University of Oxford and AU Sharjah, researching the experiences of editors of content about the Arab world on Wikipedia. We are interested in your experiences of editing Wikipedia and are organising two events that we think you would be an excellent contributor to.

First, we are hosting an online wiki focus group about contributing to Wikipedia in Arabic and to articles about the Middle East and North Africa. We are interested in what barriers you perceive to exist in Wikipedia, how articles can be made better and generally what can be done to expand and improve Arabic Wikipedia and Wikipedia articles about the Arab world. This discussion will take place on a MediaWiki hosted at our institution and be available in English and Arabic. We will allow users to create their own discussion pages in addition to our discussions.

Second, we are hosting face-to-face workshops in Cairo from 21st-22nd October 2012. If you are interested in this we should be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for up to twenty participants. This workshop will cover similar themes to the online discussion but will allow participants to meet one another and benefit from being together.

Improving and expanding new articles

Hi. Recently I have understood that you're interested in Ancient Egypt's articles. You had made Valley of the Kings a good article 6 years ago. I just came to say that please also improve and add reliable sources to articles Valley of the Queens and Theban Necropolis. Actually I liked to expand them but I haven't got enough sources and also enough knowledge for doing that. So please make their material better every time you can. Thanks a lot. User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money.
