Costa del Azahar/dels Tarongers

Sorry for intruding on your talk page. I just wanted to know why did you change the phonetic transcription of Spanish and Valencian? AFAIK we use a narrow transcription for these languages, therefore the "d" in the clitic del/dels is lenited (as there is not a pause in this name/sentence; it is not "Costa, del Azahar" [ˈkosta | del azaˈar] but "Costa del Azahar" [ˈkosta ðel azaˈar]). Also, on the same article you changed Peníscola to Peñíscola, why? Both names are official, so both have the right to be used. Some months ago, we agreed to use a more neutral (English) form: Peniscola (without diacritics). So, shall we use this form in other articles as well? Jɑυмe (xarrades) 22:36, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

I created the article using the spelling "Peñiscola" (with the tilde on the n but without the acute on the i), but that was 6 years ago and I cannot now remember why. Probably I wanted to avoid the unfortunate sequence of letters penis-, though that doesn't explain why I omitted the acute on the i. I've never touched the phonetic transcription. IPA-cmn

I don't know if you have an opinion on the changes at Template:C-cmn. They leave the articles inconsistent, though that can be fixed if there is consensus for the change. Y as initial letter of a name in Polish or German

I was appalled to discover just now, when I retrieved the section heading from the RD/L archive, that it's been over two weeks since I posted it! :-o
I appreciate your remarks confirming this as a guideline. This is on behalf of a new young colleague whose encounter with archival materials from 20th C. Europe is swiftly revealing her unfamiliarity with variant (i.e. non-English) pronunciations of the Latin alphabet. Since one of her tasks involves transcribing names in Hebrew and "foreign" (= romanized) spellings to generate new key words for the database, I'm starting to cobble together a chart she can use when the source text is Yiddish. A good exercise for me: I still haven't assimilated Dutch, Hungarian, and Romanian, and still have to check "my" Italian. As mentioned in my first comment here, the same sentence is used in the Frisian languages article. I can't imagine there would be many people fluent in three Frisian languages. Hayden120 (talk) 11:25, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

There too the sentence and all its translations are unsourced and we have no way of verifying whether it's grammatical in all the languages we don't happen to know personally. In fact, that's a much bigger problem than the offensiveness. It should really be removed from Frisian languages as well. If such an example sentence in multiple languages has been published in a reliable source, we can use that (if it's not a copyvio). Otherwise it's probably best to just do without an example sentence (they're not really terribly useful anyway). Angr (talk) 11:31, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

As someone who works on language issues could you look at this page. I admit to being totally confused by the recent talk page comment. Feel free to look at the article difference from my last version to the current one as well. The author seems very enthusiastic but I am unsure of the point trying to be made. I think he's just trying to say that what Americans call a levee, Brits call a dike, and Canadians use either word depending on whether their speech is more British-influenced or American-influenced. It's certainly true that younger Canadians' English is more American-influenced than that of older Canadians, but attributing this to "the mass media and its sycophants" is just ranting. MSU Interview

Dear Angr,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Old Irish Assistance?

I also posted this on the Gaeilge Task Force page, but it looks like things have been a bit slow there; so here I am on your doorstep again.

At https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Badb#Representations_in_legends I put in the OI of "The Morrígan's Prophecy" from CELT: Cath Maige Tuired: The Second Battle of Mag Tuired. The English translation has been shared around for years, with a variety of people tweaking it. I think it's pretty straightforward, but would appreciate someone with more OI to check it. What had been there previously was a modern English version that, while creative and poetic, had been translated from a Modern Irish variation, and hence diverged pretty significantly from the original Irish. Diasystem

I have recently gotten into a bit of a spat with another editor, Dale Chock at Talk:Diasystem. The long and the short of it is that Dale has removed content that I think is worth keeping. It hasn't gotten disruptive, but I can see that Dale has a vested interest in portraying me as incompetent so that he can dismiss my position. Peadar Ua Laoghaire

Hi, I wrote much of the Peadar Ua Laoghaire article years ago - but I notice that we are showing the IPA for the pronunciation of Peadar with a broad r, but in the Muskerry dialect, this name, even in the nominative, is pronounced with a slender r. A source for this is the magazine An Músgraigheach, a local publication in the 1940s, part of which is transcribed at http://www.musgrai.com/foillsiu/musgraigheach/1/musgraigheach1_3 , where the slender pronunciation of the r is discussed. Thanks for posting re: "ads not by site" from the CodecC(or v) plugin =

I was having the same issue of "ads not by this site" appearing all over Wikipedia. The ad-blocker blocked the ad, but the ad placeholder was still there (and intrusive), also, I am not sure how much information transfer occurs when/if the codec adware communicates with its developers. Yeah, I had to actually uninstall Codec-C from my computer in order for it to disappear from Internet Explorer. For Firefox and Chrome, it was sufficient to disable the add-on. Angr (talk) 15:18, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Wiktionary

I am posting this to you as a wiktionary admin. Wiktionary, where apparently the trolls still hold the admin buttons. Or I am at a loss to explain this [1], and after I restored the vandalised page a block of my account for "Disruptive edits: multiple (dozens, hundred or thousands of edits)". I do not know if this guy was on drugs when he blocked me, or if he genuinely thinks that providing academic literature to discuss the etymology of a word counts as "disruptive" editing.

Apparently an enfant terrible even for wiktionary standards, but I can only hope that this will now be sufficient to get this joker de-adminned in a hurry.
