Welcome and Jig borers[edit]

A belated welcome to wikipedia, by the looks of your edits you don't need the standard intro.

For want of a more appropriate template, I've added the Metalworking - Drilling and threading template to the jigborer article. The full list of templates and categories for metalworking, or at least what we did at the time is available at the article list sub page. That is not the definitive list and there is probably a good case for making a Category:Machine tools, or perhaps to avoid clashes with other types/fields it should be Category:Metalworking machine tools, but then there is the template to do and decisions regarding article overlap — and I'm going to places I don't want to, at the moment ;-)

Keep up the good work! — Graibeard (talk) 01:45, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ian V. Hogg[edit]

Hi, lumbercutter, the reason you might have seen a lot of confusion about weapons experts named Ian Hogg, is that there is also a notable American gun expert named Ian Hogg who is the curator of the United States Armor muesum in Fort Knox, KY. (Or at least he was when I last saw him on TV). He's a rather porcine looking gentleman who often appears on the History Channel, especially on the show called "Tales of the Gun", but occasionally on Mail Call and other programs. V. Joe 15:38, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip. If I can find some more info, I will add him to the hndis page Ian Hogg. I searched for him even at the museum's website (http://www.generalpatton.org/) but could not find confirmation. Looked for a "About our contributors" type of section on the History Channel website, but didn't find anything upon a cursory look. Will look into this more later. Thanks. Lumbercutter 16:10, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Was browsing in a bookstore and saw a book jacket that makes me think it is one and the same person. If I can confirm this, I will adjust accordingly. Lumbercutter 04:46, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen the term "overhanging bolt" before; where did that come from? Do you have references?

Thanks. Georgewilliamherbert 02:14, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The only reference I have so far is the one I cited in the Uzi submachine gun article (Hogg, Ian V. (1979). Guns and How They Work. New York: Everest House. pp. pp. 157-158. ISBN 0896960234. {{cite book}}: |pages= has extra text (help)). However, Ian V. Hogg is a trustworthy source. Googling "overhung bolt" (N.B. "overhung" not "overhanging") yields some respectable hits, including a page in the Beretta.com domain. It seems that "overhung bolt" is not as popular a term as "telescoping bolt". But it's used enough to mention it. Lumbercutter 02:33, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cattle[edit]

Cattle is certainly not a collective noun; collective nouns are words like pride (of lions), herd (of cattle), flock (of sheep), and so on. Cattle is a mass noun, and is in every respect like other English mass nouns, except for the peculiarity of plural agreement ("cattle are", not *"cattle is"), whereas most English mass nouns have singular agreement ("water is", not *"water are"; but compare e.g. "suds are", not *"suds is"). Singular agreement is hardly a defining quality of mass nouns, however, especially when examined cross-linguistically (les mathematiques in French, las sopas in Spanish, מים in Hebrew, and so on). —RuakhTALK 20:05, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. Thanks. See response at Talk:Mass noun. I'm going to post this discussion there. Lumbercutter 03:18, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copy/paste page moves[edit]

Just so you know, redirect switches aren't as easy as copying and pasting. If the text is just copy/pasted, the history of the article isn't preserved—it looks like you created the entire article all in one edit on 9 March 2007. Because of legal issues (licensing with the GFDL requires that writers be attributed for their work), we have to move the history when we move text. That's easy when the destination article doesn't exist (just use the move button), but it requires the intervention of an administrator when the destination article has a history of its own. There's no need to worry about it now; I've taken care of it. However, please be aware of this in the future. Thanks! --Spangineerws (háblame) 19:59, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Both for (a) fixing it and (b) educating as well! — Lumbercutter 20:20, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Turret lathe[edit]

Hello Lumbercutter, I agree with you, that the Turret lathe is related to the category:Metalworking. However, the category:Lathe is a sub-category of metalworking and a seperate entry in metalworking is not required. I have therefore removed the category entry. Aha! Makes perfect sense. Thanks. — Lumbercutter 16:01, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit to "Nicetown-Tioga, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania"[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. One of the core policies of Wikipedia is that articles should always be written from a neutral point of view. It appears you have not followed this policy at Nicetown-Tioga, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please always observe our core policies. Thank you. FactoidCow 13:23, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi FactoidCow. I understand that you're fighting the good fight in patroling for potentially unsound edits, but if you look at my contributions, you will see that I am no newbie who needs to be given a welcome template. I just created the Nicetown article last night. I am still expanding it. If you look at that edit's context, you will see that the very next sentence begins, "However, if economic conditions allow trends of urban gentrification to continue, […]". Obviously, I am presenting both sides of the coin. — Lumbercutter 13:46, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies. FactoidCow 17:39, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Centre Square[edit]

Before you write an entire article, may I make two suggestions? First, there is now a section at Philadelphia_City_Hall#Centre_Square, before you write an entire article I would suggest expanding that section. Also, I would ask you to read Philadelphia#Colonial. You'll see a line that says, One of the notable features of Penn's plan for the city was the creation of five large squares, to provide open space for the city's residents. This might be a good article itself. --evrik (talk) 14:07, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Implemented your suggestion. Added Centre Square info to Philadelphia_City_Hall#Site. (That heading seemed to be best given the article topic.) — Lumbercutter 14:54, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Homophones: palate, palette, pallet[edit]

Would it make more sense to have the "you may be looking for" at the start? Someone looking for Palate is unlikely to read it through to the end & will just get confusediridescent (talk to me!) 22:20, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So right you are. Just fixed all three via Template:Distinguish, variant {{Distinguish|foo|bar}}. Thanks! — Lumbercutter 22:30, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No prob. It is really fantastic that Google has been digitizing books to make their text searchable—and more specifically, that they make these old public-domain books completely accessible. Five years ago almost none of us ever would have seen the inside of that particular 1906 book. Now any of us can see it in an instant. The only thing that changed is that instead of traveling to the U of Mich library to see it, or borrowing it via ILL, we can click through to an image of it from any PC at any time. Yet the result is quite revolutionary, because the drastically lowered threshold of time and effort to find that info made the difference between being exposed to it, or never being exposed to it. — Lumbercutter 23:11, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Hardinge, Inc.[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Hardinge, Inc., suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Notice

The article Dog (engineering) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Presumably unsourced articles were fine 15 years ago, but if I had created this just now I doubt it would last more than a few days without cites

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Valley Green (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
