Howdy

Sshhh: it's me. I am incredibly incognito, so burn after reading and don't let anyone know. Anytime you are bored and want to copyedit, please have a look at Wikipedia:School and university projects/Dr. Aaij's Freshman comp. How did your WP library project go last month? (Was it last month?) Dr Aaij (talk) 20:22, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey! I'll definitely go check out that project. My talk has not happened yet - it will be next week actually. LadyofShalott 21:40, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I did it this morning. I think it went well. There were some good questions. LadyofShalott 20:26, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Interview request

Hello, my name is Reeves Wiedeman, and I am with The New Yorker magazine. I am writing a story on Wikipedia, and specifically the often extensive debates on what to include in certain entries. One such debate I came across is one you took some part in: the debate over whether to include Neil Gaiman’s family’s history with Scientology in his entry.

I’m hoping to talk to you briefly about the Wikipedia editing process: etiquette, process, debate, and some of the things that go into developing the entries.

If you could, please contact me at Reeves_Wiedeman@newyorker.com to let me know the best way to reach you. Thank you for your time, and I hope to speak with you soon.

Wiedemar (talk) 22:12, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Good choice for an interviewee. LadyofShalott is the epitome of a level-headed Wikipedian. APK whisper in my ear 22:31, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Hey, I'm level-headed, and I've met Neil Gaiman! OK, the Lady is a much better candidate for things that need to make sense. I look forward to seeing her in print. Dr Aaij (talk) 20:26, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

I was looking at Battle of Frenchman's Creek (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) from Special:Newpages. The article had some malformed reference tags that were causing it to display incorrectly. I was going to fix those tags, but you deleted the article. Other than the reference tag problems, the article did indeed have content -- quite a bit, actually. Could you restore it, and maybe fix those tags? --Elkman (Elkspeak) 18:24, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Restored - that is weird. It's not displaying incorrectly; it's not displaying at all, and I don't see what should cause that. LadyofShalott 18:29, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
I saw everything shoved over to the right, displayed in a narrow column about the width of the intended infobox. It also had some red warnings about bad ref syntax. It's fixed now, so everything should be good. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 18:45, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
Even odder that the mistake displayed differently for us. Thanks for fixing it! LadyofShalott 18:50, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

I need your help - edit war

Lady of Shalott,

Good evening. I am not sure how to approach this. I came across your name semi-randomly,can there be such a thing? I am involved in an edit war over a "strict no touching policy" article located at FCPS- Fairfax County Public Schools, under the article section - "No Contact Rule Controversy"

I believe the article should state why the rule of not allowing students to touch, including no 'high-fives', hugs, handshakes, etc. is idiotic. The other side only wants the school systems explanation of why they have the rule. The system argues for cultural differences, apparently there are a few Muslims in the school, and that a high-five can lead to a fistfight and that hugs - even among girls - are bad naughty things.

Anyway, if we can get a NPOV editor to write/re-write the article section balancing the views the editor who is against the current NPOV will agree to the new NPOV. - Oh, that was bad.

Would you be kind enough to have a look and see if you would do this for us? I may have already given tedickey, that is the other editor, a reason to reject you as an editor because I contacted you. However, I conclude the only way to handle this is with an unknown editor. As he is free to write to you as well explaining, as he claims, how I am biased, soapboxing,non-npov, switching ip's, the father of the child, someone associated with the child, and that I.. "have to prove that (a) you are not Henri Beaulieu (or a close relative, or someone who has a personal interest in him), and (b) that you (singular or plural) are not the person(s) who have been making edits in this thread." Actually, that's what he said before. I think he is okay with a neutral edit now.

Can you respond on my page? I am not sure I know how to get back here. I will bookmark this page.

Thank you 71.91.18.218 (talk) 06:40, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

No promises; it will depend on what sources are available, but I'll take a look. LadyofShalott 16:30, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for agreeing to look at this. I wish you well in the attempt. JamesBWatson (talk) 09:45, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Nipsey Hussle

Hi. I see you've deleted Nipsey Hussle a few times as WP:CSD#G4, Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. If you read the discussion it pretty clearly stated that the result was "delete without prejudice against recreation if and when this artist eventually meets the notability guidelines." The article is very different from what was deleted and notability is asserted with him being on the the Epic label. A quick google search shows a pretty fair amount of hits from at least moderately notable sources like the OC Register. I think the article needs work, but the repeated speedies may be a bit premature. Toddst1 (talk) 06:18, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

OK, I'll leave it alone for now... at least until further looking, and I won't do a speedy on it again. LadyofShalott 06:21, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
I removed a huge copyvio from the middle section. {{Findsourcesnotice}} shows plenty o' hits. Not that I'm a fan of the Pop artist of the second getting a wikipedia article or anything. Cheers. Toddst1 (talk) 06:28, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
LOL @ Nipsey Hussle! Makes me think of (obviously Nipsey Russell and him being on Match Game, and I'm nowhere old enough to be able to reference that except I was forced to watch o;d game shows on GSN with my grandmother when I was growing up. Help, or a point in the right direction

Hi Lady. I need help doing something on Wiki I used to know how to do but have forgotten. And I remember you from Strange Brew, so I thought I'd ask you. Yesterday I made an article for Carolyn Haines and I need to make it so Caroline Burnes redirects to Carolyn Haines. It's her pseudonym. Anyways, I'd really appreciate help and if you check out the article you will know what I mean. Thanks! -FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed (talk) 13:49, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Why did you delete my group, Greg's number... it is a serious group, describing my number, i am very angry and I would like an explantation.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs)

It was completely unreferenced and appeared to be something just made up probably as you were sitting there typing. If you can show me a reference that demonstrates this is actually a mathematical concept of note, I will gladly restore the article. LadyofShalott 00:35, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
good answer, if you delete my page you have to also delete the page for the googolplex, the google number, and any other mathematical constant ever created, i suppose you will have to delete pi as well, and espilon plancks constant is also a load of rubbish, clearly, all it is is a number with a name. Einsteins equation E=mc^2 should also be deleted, as it is obviously vandalism. You stupid woman, why did you delete my page, i want an answer.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs)
See answer above. LadyofShalott 00:39, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

It is a number, with a name, I have claimed that this number is my number, and have put my name to it. Just like any mathematician, physicist or other number related proffesion does. You cannot say it is vandalism, it is just a number. All mathematical contants are made up. It is people like you who stop the furthering of scientific research, i study physics and derived myself a constant. That is perfectly legal and is a much more warranted page than other such pages that get created. Now please remake my group. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs) 00:45, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Have you published this in a refereed journal? Please provide the citation. See WP:V and WP:RS. LadyofShalott 00:48, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&gid=319259787918 if you look at this link, you will see that my number is being refereed by other people, and is definitely accepted as a number by those people. Therefore you no longer have any conviction for my page to be deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs) 00:56, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, Facebook is not a reliable source. Try again. LadyofShalott 00:58, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Says who? Maybe says you, an administrator of a competing website, obviously you would say that, when did wikipedia become a dictatorship anyway. It is a charity, paid for by the users, AKA people like me. If you are being totally stubborn and refuse to re add my page to wikipedia please can you atleast send me a copy of the information I kindly posted on there for the good of the world, for others to learn from, and use to further science and the creation of cures for deadly diseases like AIDS and cancer, which you are clearly not a fan of. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs) 01:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Your text is pasted below. I welcome all comments as to whether this should have remained as an article. LadyofShalott 01:09, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

"Greg's number is closely related to the Google, the Googleplex and Roman's number, which previously was thought to be the biggest recognised number with a name, known to man. A google plex being the number 1 with a google 0's. A google being the number 1 with 100 0's. Roman's number is the number 1 with a google plex 0's.

There is now a much bigger and much better number in use, Greg's number, which is defined as the number one with a Roman's number 0's. Naturally this is a huge number, much to big to easily write or work out on any modern day computer, but it is easily defined as 1 with Roman's number 0's. Greg's number has no current common day use, although legend has it, Greg's number was created as the only was to register the amount of goals Greg scored in one season. Greg is a physicist come economist come linguist from the small disgusting town of Blackburn, and studies at QEGS Blackburn.

Greg's number is also widely regarded as a much better and more important number than Roman's puny number."

Incidentally, no, I am not a fan of "deadly diseases like AIDS and cancer". However, I am a fan of good grammar. LadyofShalott 01:12, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

It should, you are just jealous that I have a number and you don't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Uh huh, at least I can spell googol. LadyofShalott 01:18, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

If you can show me a reference that demonstrates this is actually a mathematical concept of note, I will gladly restore the article. Did you only ever get taught good grammar, because maths is clearly lost on you, as cannot see which part of a number is a mathematical concept. Is the number 1 a mathematical concept, or just a number? The answer is just a number, binomial theorem is a mathematical concept, Greg's number however, is just a number. Riddle me that LadyofShalott.

and hahahaha http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googol you know NOTHING. You clearly looked it up to see what it was after i wrote it, I wrote it in a hurry. Correcting my grammar is a sign that you have a weak argument which you can only back up with checking my spelling. Americans sicken me, your artificial intellect is disgusting.

Re: Speedy deletion rationale of Greg's Number

Thanks for the heads up. Hmm I think the two may overlap in some instances. -Reconsider! 01:44, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Well, yeah, I think anything that actually meets the patent nonsense criterion (G1) is either an example of vandalism (G3) or else is a test page (G2). LadyofShalott 01:46, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

So is a googol nonsense, if so why hasn't it been deleted. As it is exactly the same principle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gjones8 (talkcontribs) 01:52, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Please read WP:N and WP:V to receive your answer. The various numbers you have mentioned meet those policies; yours does not. I have nothing further to say on this matter. LadyofShalott 01:55, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Serious civility issue

LoS, making misrepresentations and lying about another editor is a very serious civility violation. I know you are just reverting, but please self revert your undoing of my changes. If you review those coments you will see that my statements are not being accurately represented. This is unaccpetable. I will not stand for being lied about. Please revert yourself and investigate FIRST. This is a very serious issue. Ryan can talk shit about me, apparently, but he's not allowed to lie. I've corrected it and it needs to remain corrected. Thank you. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:34, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hey, CoM, if you need to correct what he is saying, you can do it by stating what is erroneous in his remarks and what is true. No, of course he is not allowed to lie about you. However, you can not go about correcting people by just changing their remarks. I'm afraid you are digging more and bigger holes for yourself by going about things in the manner you sometimes do. (BTW, I am explicitly not commenting upon the truth or fallacy of either version of the comments.) LadyofShalott 03:41, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
I corrected statements that were obviously untrue. He is not allowed to slander me. Please self-revert or get an Arb clerk to remove those statements until they can be reviewed properly. This type of dishonest misrepresentation has been very damaging to my reputation and I will not allow it to continue. Slander is wrong, the civility policy is very clear about lies, and they need to be removed ASAP! As in NOW. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:46, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, I see you've already gone to WP:AN to request an arbitration clerk's assistance. LadyofShalott 03:50, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Actually, what I think could be most beneficial to you is to point by point using direct quotes and diffs show exactly where he is incorrect in what he says. If he has lied about you, and you show that to be the case, he will be seen to have been in the wrong. If you just change his remarks though, people will see that behavior on your part and be likely focus on it instead of the substance of what was changed. Do you see what I'm saying here? LadyofShalott 03:55, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
I am a living person. So there are BLP issues. There is also the civility policy to consider. Our policies are very clear. Slander is not allowed. Those statements are obviously untrue and they cannot be allowed to stand. They need to be corrected or removed immediately. There is no gray area about this very serious issue. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:57, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Are you going to self-revert? Are you disputing that I'm being lied about and misrepresented? ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:22, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
No, I'm not going to self-revert. No, I'm neither disputing nor affirming that you have been lied about or misrepresented. As for that, I may look at what was exactly said in more detail tomorrow, but I can not do so tonight. (It is late, I'm tired, and I have to be at work in the morning.) Until I've had time and mental energy to examine the statements, I will not affirm that anyone's version is accurate. I do encourage you to use the quotes and diffs though. Would you be willing to help me out by moving this article to my userspace? I saw it mentioned on the Food project page, and it seems like something that would be worth mentioning in one of the apple articles at the very least instead of just leaving deleted. I noticed it investigating hitlerszalonna, which seems pretty interesting. I'm not sure it's pumpkin. Several translations I've seen say it's fruit or plum. I'm trying to ask a couple of editors who speak Hungarian to weigh in. Cheerios. Cheese dream got 8,800 views. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:59, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Done User:ChildofMidnight/My Jewel I hope you can find out something about that Hungarian food. LadyofShalott 20:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks LoS! Much appreciated. Could you please do the same for Mermaid problem? It seems like it was an interesting article, but had some synth and OR problems. Maybe there's a way to include the content appropriately? ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:19, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh and I'd also like to have a look at List of the occult secret societies and it's histories. Thanks very much. Some other editors have expressed an interest in those subjects, so we'll see what happens. Let me know if you have any idea on the "Mermaid problem". It's a bit of a stretch as a stand-alone I think. Mythological conundums? I'm hoping someone will step up over whether pumpkin is an accurate ingredient for the fruity szalonna. And I was also trying to figure out what an elongated cube is called? Like a cylinder. Or a tetrahedron. Parallelagram? Maybe once the grease clears my thinking will improve? Have a good one. By the way, I didn't take any offense over the merge idea for cheese dream. I think it's best as a stand alone. And with the can of whoop ass thing, the whip poor will thing I just stumbled on and thought it was kind of cool. I wasn't making fun or anything. I just liked the name and the bird song. I wonder why they're called whip poor wills. IS there such a thing as a whippor? Anyway, I'm babbling even more than usual, so it's probably time to get offline. Cheerios. It's good to see you're onboard for the BC2011. Way to beat the rush! ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:26, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. An "elongated cube" is a rectangular prism. (A tetrahedron only has four faces, and a paralleogram is a type of (two-dimensional) polygon.) Have you ever heard the call of a whippoorwill? The name is imitative of the call. LadyofShalott 22:46, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
LoS did you even look at the link I posted in my original comment about the Whippoorwill? It was to an audio recording of the song. It didn't sound like Whippoorwill to me. But the constellations don't look a whole lot like what they are supposed to be either, so there you go. Of course I'm not into medicinal herbs... Maybe I'm too down to earth?
By the way I got a laugh out of your gluttonous comment, which I just noticed. I had actually checked on the spelling of the word and thought I fixed it, but it must have been edit conflicted out because you beat me to it. I hadn't even noticed before now that you got in ahead of me and fixed it. And here I was all proud that I caught the mistake and made sure it was corrected (since it was right there at the top of the page!) Are my article being autoreviewed? I haven't gotten a speedy nom or prod in a long long time. :( ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:31, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
I'm not seeing any link to an audio file. Am I overlooking it? I'm glad you got a laugh from my edit summary comment. I hope that makes my beating you to correcting it worth it. As far as I know (I haven't checked), you don't have autoreviewer status since you keep turning it down. Maybe your articles just seem to be on notable topics lately. Oh and to your earlier comment, I'm glad you didn't take any offense at the merger proposal for cheese dream/cheese sandwich. Honestly, before that article, I'd never heard the term "cheese dream" - it was just an open-faced cheese sandwich. I still think it could all be one article, but it's not something I have any desire to do wiki-battle over. I need to get to sleep. Bonne nuit. (I wonder what the Hungarian for that is.) LadyofShalott 06:45, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Your archives seem to start at Jan. 19, but this page only goes back to Feb. 24. Where is the stuff inbetween? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:06, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

OK, there was another archive link that needed to be added; it's there now. LadyofShalott 21:17, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Doesn't the link at the top of this page [2] produce the song of the Whippoorwill? ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, apparently so. However, it apparently makes more than one kind of sound. Listen to #2 on this page. LadyofShalott 20:54, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey Aleta, need a watchful eye from you

Long time! I came after adding a photo to a musicians' biography page named Capleton. Apparently there are strong feelings about anti-gay sentiments (and allegations that he advocates the killing or harming of homosexuals). Seems like POV on both sides, though there his anti-gay stance is referenced. I reverted someone who reverted my addition to the article. All I did was remove the Jamaican flag from the infobox, add a new photo, and move the older one down, but I think it had something to do with anti (or pro) gay issues. Would you look at it, the last few contribs (and reverts) to the article and see maybe if it needs semi-protection, or whatever is done in such cases? I'm not interested in editing it or anything aside from adding the photo. I'd appreciate it. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 19:46, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Leah, I don't think semi-protection is justified at this point. The IP's most recent contribution, which you reverted, was certainly not acceptable having some unsourced or poorly-sourced (to a blog) negative information on a BLP. I've added it to my watchlist and will keep an eye on it for now. LadyofShalott 04:32, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi LadyofShalott, I noticed that you had deleted a page called ImaGem before, and I want to write the page. Seems the problem last time was it was written as an advertisement? I plan on it being purely informational, I just wanted to check in with you first. Teva3 (talk) 15:03, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Absolutely. In fact, you could start it in your user space if you like, to make sure no one else deletes it before it's in really good shape. Either way, just let me know. LadyofShalott 20:51, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I've started the page in my user space under Article Practice. Feel free to have a look, I'm open to suggestions and any help you may have for me. :) Teva3 (talk) 21:13, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Teva, I'm afraid that your article looks quite promotional still. It would help if you had third party reviewers of ImaGen that say something about its significance. Is there anything like that? (If it's already there, and I'm just missing it, point it out to me, please. LadyofShalott 19:26, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
Hm, I understand. Im a little confused about what you mean by 3rd party reviewers? I have a lot of sources through the trade magazines, reviewed sources and such, but maybe I need more research notes? Is that what you mean? Teva3 (talk) 19:34, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
The way I wrote the article may be a reason for it sounding promotional...my purpose was to inform viewers of the diamond grading practices and systems used as well as why ImaGem stands out. Do you think that is the reason it sounds promotional? Maybe I shouldn't give such an overview of each practice, and the problems that occur? Teva3 (talk) 21:15, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Poetry in motion

Shallots, thanks very much for helping me collegially and constructively "ad nauseum" with such grace and courtesy. You're a good one. :) But for heaven sakes stay away from Witch Doc-tors who get you involved in their unseemly article interests! ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:40, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments, CoM. I wish things had gone differently, but I hope to see you in a year. There will be lots of architects and dishes still in need of article creation then. Until then, LadyofShalott 04:48, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Problems with user_Ali Muratovic

Hello LadyofShalott. I´m sorry to bother you, but since you intervened when I exposed that users abuse of wrong name spellings, I touth asking for your advice again. I hope you remember our conversation in that user talkpage, and I´m not sure you have seen the way it ended... here. Well, he continues doing the same, and is not respecting the original way the names are spelled, but he is wrongly making them more "arabic". Can you please tell me what to do, or could you please warn him? FkpCascais (talk) 11:55, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Many thanx. I´m really sorry to bother you with this but, when users think that there are no rules to be followed, and that WP is just an anarchic gathering of information, some pause for clarification I hope will be very usefull. :) FkpCascais (talk) 19:32, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. Let me know if you see any further problems. LadyofShalott 19:48, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
I will. Thanks a lot! FkpCascais (talk) 21:03, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Dear Lady, would you mind userfying East YMCA Branch of Montgomery, Alabama to its creator, User talk:Bradallenpowell? You can stick it in his sandbox, User:Bradallenpowell/sandbox. I've asked the deleting administrator but have yet to hear back from them. Thank you so much! Dr Aaij (talk) 20:02, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your help again, Lady. Hey, Lizzy the Lezzy was really fantastic--I watched a half dozen of them. They are not suitable for class, though, haha, and I couldn't get even the slightest smile out of my upper level section. Lady, I don't know about this class exercise--some of my students are having a hard time. Thanks, Dr Aaij (talk) 00:13, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Sock question

Is that the right way to start an investigation, or should I start them at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Brucejenner? CTJF83 chat 06:07, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I was just thinking about that. Since Brucejenner is the master account, it should be at that name. LadyofShalott 06:09, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, since I guarantee there will be more in the future. CTJF83 chat 06:10, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, CTJF83 chat 06:16, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

<--Well, shoot. I just realized that would require a deletion since a Brucejenner page already exists. I don't want to mess with the history, and am not experienced with history merges. Maybe you could just put a note on there saying that's where it ought to go? I don't want to go muck it up now. LadyofShalott 06:19, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

A grade for the lady

An ox, an A, either way.

An (Egyptian) A for the LadyofShalott, as a thank you for her good work in Wikipedia:School and university projects/Dr. Aaij's Freshman comp. Thank you, also on behalf of my students. Dr Aaij (talk) 18:52, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Well thank you for that! (I wondered if the sudden increase in productivity of the project related to an impending class deadline...) Did you notice that a redlink in one of your students' pages led directly to the creation of two new stubs: Clinton College (Tennessee) and Clinton College (Kentucky)? LadyofShalott 18:59, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Haha, I appreciate the vagueness of "led directly to"--it led you to create them! It's nice to see you creating articles. And really, thanks for all the help. Yes, today the thing was due, but I sort of extended the deadline to Wednesday. We had an in-class session where I went over all the articles and I hope that some of my students went to work. I co-nominated you for a DYK, by the way, and I just got some advice on Menudo (soup) (it must be spicy, it must be fresh, it must have tripe cut in small pieces). Dr Aaij (talk) 19:07, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Do you have any idea how tempted I am to put a "notability" tag on the article you're working on? Do you feel the same? Am I only dreeeeeaaming... Dr Aaij (talk) 19:45, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Haha! Oh, I know that feeling well, though I don't know that I have associated it with 80's pop bands in particular. (Are you implying my sources are less than impeccable?) <grins> LadyofShalott 19:50, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

<--Hey fearless Lady, do you mind history-merging User:Clyles/sandbox? It's no Ysleta Mission, but it'll have to do. Thank you! Dr Aaij (talk) 14:40, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

 Done :) LadyofShalott 16:53, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, and thanks also for the category note in that other article--I addressed that in class and hope they will get on it soon. Dr Aaij (talk) 17:17, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
Shoot, now I see the problem with pasting--see John Veres. Baka! (Japanese for stupid.) What do I do now? Can you speedy it and then redo the whole thing from the sandbox? Thank you thank you thank you! Dr Aaij (talk) 02:48, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Done I added a couple categories as well. In this case, since there was not previously an article on him, you could have just moved the sandbox article, but no matter. LadyofShalott 03:28, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

<--Yes, a move--I see that now. I've only moved things to correct caps and all, not from one kind of space to another. Now I know! This educational assignment seems beneficial to both students and teacher. Thanks! Dr Aaij (talk) 14:26, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Category?

Lady, I give up--I don't know what to do to "make" a category. Do I have to type in some text? I looked at some other university faculty, but all they seemed to have was a category called something like "Category:University of Tennessee at Martin" and there is no such category yet for Auburn Montgomery. Should I make that? I'm also doing this because the first one I made didn't have the right name--we are called "Auburn Montgomery" and I changed that in John Veres. Now, you added the "Auburn faculty" category, but is that right? I mean, we are something of a satellite, but Martin faculty isn't categorized under "University of Tennessee faculty". Thanks for your help! Dr Aaij (talk) 15:07, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, haven't you actually made the relevant category already? I put it as a subcategory of the Cat:AU faculty. I did that because the article on AUM says it is a branch of AU, and it is in the AU category. Are AUM faculty not considered part of AU as a whole? (I'm not familiar with the Martin UT situation, and haven't yet looked at.) LadyofShalott 16:04, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't think we like to think of ourselves like that. But I'm going to leave it alone; I feel like I've already done more harm than good. Can you merge one more sandbox for me, User:Mari19191/sandbox, to Kempsville High School? Thanks! Dr Aaij (talk) 19:34, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
I was just trying to be logical about it. :) I've done the merger. LadyofShalott 20:15, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Richard Reep article

It's a genuine mess and there are serious COI issues based on the original poster. The poster hasn't touched it since it was posted, either. However, I have no problem with it running its course through its deletion proposal. It's just awful as it stands and it should be deleted after the prod expires if there is no improvement. Thanks for letting me know.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 15:15, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

DYK Pelobates cultripes

Italicized everything. Well, we could combine it like that: ... that the Western Spadefoot toad (Pelobates cultripes) when threatened inflates its body and mews kitten-like and that a female produces bands of up to 7000 eggs which are up to 100 cm long? - But maybe the combined hook is too long? Hive001 (talk) 19:26, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

That would be my only concern (and I don't know what the hook length limit is). If it's not too long, I think the combined hook would be great; if it is too long, then either individual one should be fine. :) LadyofShalott 20:04, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
The limit seems to be 200 characters and I count 214 with everything. I guess it's the original hook then. But thanks for appreciating my two hooks :) Hive001 (talk) 20:48, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Question

I'm wondering why this is considered acceptable if my questioning him isn't. He is dragging up an issue that is not related to the question at hand. I reverted it and another editor came in to return it. I'd comment that recognizing that each connection brings a different IP is compelling reason to have a regular account rather than expect everyone to accept it is the same person. That he posted this after your admonishment not to continue is exceedingly troublesome. Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:29, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I've commented in the relevant thread. LadyofShalott 13:58, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't know how this fits into the rules of wikipedia....

From a recent post at Talk:Unitarian Bahaism I went looking and saw something I don't know what to make of. "There will eventually be a Wikipedia entry on the UBA along with a team of edit warriors." 3 weeks ago[3] (search down the page for "wiki"). Is this important? In the past I had been given to understand it would be inappropriate to pull in people for effect. But if it doesn't mean anything I figured you could clarify. Smkolins (talk) 22:31, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I don't know. It does sound as if meat-puppetry might be occurring. It would be worth mentioning in the AfD. LadyofShalott 01:47, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Congrats for "your" day!

Hello LadyofShalott. Congratulations for having now your day. It must feel good! Well, since you have been so nice and kind, I couldn´t refrain myself from not asking you for advice. I have been involved in a hard discussion regarding an historical issue. It has to do with the monopolization of a serious of related articles by one editor. basicaly, this editor User:DIREKTOR insists in considering an resistance monarchic movement (Chetniks) and its leader (Draža Mihailović) a Nazy collaborator. The movement fought the Germans, but also the Tito´s Partisans (another resistance group). Since the second ones won the war, Tito condemned and executed Mihailovic, charging him on treason. USA organised an post-mortum trial and freed the movement of the charges, and condecorated Mihailovic. France too. Since the movement fought both, the Germans and the Partisans, some detachments ocasionally collaborated, but it was maynly a three side war. Anyway, this user, Direktor, manipulating and exageratins sources that talk about that ocasional collaboration, wants to impose that the entire movement and Mihailovic are to be considered "notable collaborators", and its role as resistance efforts ignored. Well, despite WP:AGF, this user as a Croat and assumed Titoist, Tito was the leader of the Partisans, a communist guerilla, obviously has no nice feelings towards a Serb monarchic movement, and edited the article having in mind only his POV. The worst is that when other editors want to edit the articles, he is very agressive and reverts all that doesn´t fit his ideology. He was blocked several times for breaking the 3r role. I demanded that the article includes more NPOV, so a discussion started. Another editor that also agrees with me already asked for mediation, so wi will see what will happend. A nazy collaboration accusation is a too serious accusation to be left unsourced. Anyway, my problem is regarding this users attitude towards me. He constantly manipulates my words (same way as he does with the sources) and does all the possible and impossible so his version will prevail. He unfairlly accused me of many things, but when talking about me or my edits he used the following expressions: Lack of knolledge/info (7times), Nonsence (5 times), Horrible/faulty grammar (5 times), Me having no idea whatsoever (3 times), childish (2 times), Lying (2 times), Me being nationalist (2 times), unnencyclopedic (2 times), Absurd (2 times), Stupid (1 time), Clumsy (1 time), Silly (1 time), Ridiculous (2 times), Slauderous (1 time), My opinion irrelevant (1 time), me joking (1 time), Missinformed (1 time), Utterly flawed ideas (1 time) and many more indirectly tageting me. When I asked him please to be polite and avoid using this expressions, he accused me of imagining provocation. He also constantly speaks as he is a "community". The discussion is found here: Talk:Draža Mihailović. Should I report him for this behaviour? P.S.:I am really sorry for my long comment, and for involving youm but since you are an admin, and a excellent wikipedian, I needed to ask you if I am obligated to tolerate this kind of language? FkpCascais (talk) 05:26, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. Now to your question: at this point, having only read what you've written above, and not the other relevant pages, I would say just participate fully in the mediation. A mediator is not likely to put up with abusive comments from any parties to the mediation, and the mediator should help you all work out the content disputes so that the article accurately reflects what sources say rather than the point of view of any individual editor. Has Direktor agreed to a mediation? LadyofShalott 14:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your advice. No, he hasn´t. FkpCascais (talk) 22:19, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi. I ended up receving more of this behaviour so I have ended making a report on ANI [4], but I wasn´t inspired when doing it, I did it in a hurry, and I quite expressed myself awfully (I had never donne any report before). Its my fault. Anyway, he didn´t signed the mediation request [5], the discussion on the talk page continues , but what shall I do now. Is there any possibility of having mediation anyway? FkpCascais (talk) 22:39, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
After just I have finished writting you this, an involved used AlasdairGreen27 (taking other users side), has just told me that the mediation is "under way" [6] (???). There is no reference about it anywhere, the "alleged" mediator has never claimed that, and there is nothing about it on the request. Can you please see what is really going on? I am thinking about the possibility that I´m being missinformed on purpose... FkpCascais (talk) 23:00, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, the lack of comment on the request for mediation page shows that the mediation committee has not yet either accepted or rejected the case. LadyofShalott 01:52, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
What about the fact that a "senior wikipedian" intentionally missinformed me about it? Now they are clearly covering up each other (saying it was "simple mistake"). As one of them exageratedly said when another editor stood by my side:"I refuse being "ganged up"; that is exactly how I feel here. Talk:Draža Mihailović see bottom (last comments). If I am not being correct by adressing this issue to you, please feel free to tell me so and I shall try to seek some other solution. I would feel bad if I am making you loose time with this. :) FkpCascais (talk) 02:36, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I would not assume s/he intentionally misinformed you. The mediation has been requested and not as yet declined; it may have been a simple misunderstanding. WP:AGF. LadyofShalott 17:21, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you. I am trying to have just someone to call them for reason, and advise them to stop attacking me, be carefull about this sort of missunderstanding and those kind of things, because they are pretty much acting with impunity. Nobody said even a word about that user starting to be carefull, or the other to stop desrespecting me constantly (as they just did [7]). I am very much being constantly attacked with this rude language and tricks just because I want to discuss... See how far goes this (both arguments and politeness: here. btw, the offer of collaboration was recused, so what sence the statemnt the user does makes? So, see what kind of discussion I have been having for 2 moths now... allways WP:AGF from my side. FkpCascais (talk) 17:58, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

To LadyofShalott

I have been meaning to write a note to you for some time.

A long time back, December?, you had a comment about my necessarily being old since I was a WWII veteran. But you also had some more favorable comments.

I wanted to note that I am still unretired (i.e. non-Emeritus) and still as active as ever. Thus sometimes chronological age doesn't correlate with "operational" age.

Also, I've appreciated your help on occasion relative to the Birch Reduction (Detailed) article I submitted. The old Birch Reduction article was limited and a mess. Since this was one of my reseach areas, I wanted a good article for Wikipedia. I did not anticipate the resistance I would encounter.

Thus Wikipedia is really great for non-scientific articles. But the predilection for Texts as sources and the dislike of refereed journal references led that original Birch article into its difficulties. Having a Wikipedia article as Readable and Wrong rather than more Detailed and Right reminded me of the Lewis Carroll "Through the Looking Glass". I guess I felt as if I had been through that Looking Glass myself in Wikipedia.

I have now given up on the Birch article since it seems that the same authors responsible for the old inaccurate Birch article are not modifying the one I wrote. At least my name will not be associated with the article.

I am impressed with a number of the Wikipedia Editors and Administrators but not with all.

My writing finally was some explanation of the situation.

Very best wishes,

Howard Z Howard E. Zimmerman 21:10, 17 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hezimmerman (talkcontribs)

Well first, just to clear the air since you seem somewhat put out by the comment about your age, I had to hunt back to find it, and I was not the one who said that. Anyway, I'm always glad to help when I can. I do not think you should "give up" on the article. You have done a tremendous amount of work on it, and Wikipedia is the better for it. You should know that it is always possible to see who contributed what to an article by clicking the history tab at the top of the article - that is why the history merge that we talked about was important. Thus, anyone intersted can see exacly what parts of the article you wrote. If you see errors being (re)introduced to the article, you can and should correct them and point out why they are wrong on the talk page of the article. You recently made a comment about not pointing out errors because when you did so before someone just used your comments just to fix them - well, yes, that's a lot of how Wikipedia works. If something is wrong, it needs to be corrected. LadyofShalott 04:05, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

To: LadyofShalott From: Howard Z

Thanks for the resply and comments. The comment about age was not that critical but it is interesting that it was not from you.

Regarding the Birch article, I did list the errors in that old article. Some were fixed up, I think by others than the originators or the article. In contrast, I did encounter considerable resistance (e.g. from V8rik). One comment was that on checking with Jerry March's text revealed no errors. This comment revealed the lack of expertise by that Wikipedia editor. Jerry March has a very useful text which superficially covers all kinds of reactions, but only a page or two with the highlights of the Birch Reduction. Somewhere along the line I got remarks about Textbook references being good and preferred while refereed journal articles were not desired. But most of the material in my Birch article would not be found in textbooks but it detailed in journal articles.

LadyofShalott, I do plan to go over the merged article and correct errors. But I don't plan on submitting more articles. Originally I had an extensive list of items already in Wikipedia but not appreciably covered and not properly referenced. Also the list has similar items missing from Wikipedia.

I now am trying to find a way to get my "User space" deleted since I don't plan to use that material.

With best wishes and regards,

Howard Z Howard E. Zimmerman 15:23, 18 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hezimmerman (talkcontribs)

I've made a couple of comments on your userpage that I hope you'll find useful. I am specifically staying out of the content discussion of Birch reduction because I am not qualified to have an intelligent opinion on the contents of that article. I hope you'll reconsider your position about contributing more to Wikipedia. We need more, not fewer, experts who can add and improve our coverage of specialized topics. :) LadyofShalott 21:26, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the information and correction

To: LadyofShalott From: Howard Z

Thanks for that comment. It was not something I knew and I must have done that incorrectly more than 20 (50?) times.

I hope now that I'm putting this on your Talk page. Thus I'll try the (Howard E. Zimmerman 23:09, 18 April 2010 (UTC)) here.

I've been correcting one item on the Birch article. There had been one numbering for the cyclohexadienyl anion and the Table giving the details was for the simpler Pentadienyl numbering. But that had confused someone who then wanted a reference for the second item which really was the same. Now I've used the Cyclohexadienyl numbering in the Table (with the risk of making an error. I'll proof-read this again to make certain I have the numbering correct.

Best wishes, But let me know if I've made that 4Tilde error again. Howard Z

LadyofShalott, it seems that I've erred again. I seem not to have been on the correct page when I thanked you for your help.

Somehow I've been slow in learning to navigate around Wikipedia.

I hope you can remove my message from that nice page you have.

I recently had the article Allie Brosh speedy deleted before I could respond to the tag. I spent quite a bit of time on it, and I'd hate to loose the work I put in. Would it be possible to get a copy of it? Thanks so much! Alataristarion (talk) 03:21, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I made you something...

  • Oops, I just made the redirect James Dean (painter). Artist is better, I guess. There seems to be a bit of coverage on him, so go ahead and write it! His wife is an artist also; look at the last source I added to the article. Thanks for helping out! Oh, did you look at the YouTube clip? Cute! Drmies (talk) 04:38, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
(ec) Oh, that's great! I may have to try to work up something - or maybe we could collaborate! - on James Dean (artist). He's been painting Pete a long time among other works, esp. local scenes around these parts. LadyofShalott 04:39, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Sure thing, Lady! But now I have to go to bed, with my textbook for class tomorrow as my companion. Drmies (talk) 04:40, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Good night! I need to do the same thing myself soon. LadyofShalott 04:44, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
No! Don't sleep with your textbooks! Drmies (talk) 15:47, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Hah, no, it wasn't a textbook that I took to bed with me - Dewey (book). OK, I've (only barely) started User:LadyofShalott/James Dean (artist) (just a few links at this point). I'll add as I can. Take a look at this picture. LadyofShalott 16:44, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, look at this one, too. LadyofShalott 16:48, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

Please add a credit after translation...

Thanks in advance !--Bapti (talk) 21:14, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Could you please explain...

I saw your concern over possible WP:SYNTH in Uyghur_guest_houses_suspected_of_ties_to_islamist_militancy.

If you can find the time I would be very grateful if you could explain that synth concern, more fully, here, or perhaps the article's talk page. I do my best to comply with all our policies, but I am only human, and I may have overlooked a lapse. If I really did lapse, and you can explain that lapse, I will do my best to make sure I don't make a similar lapse in future.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 19:10, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, sure. It looks to me like this article takes a number of individual incidents and ties them together with the thesis that Uyghur guesthouses (in general) are suspected of ties to Islamic militancy. I do not see that any RS has already discussed this phenomenon as a whole. Perhaps it has; if you can show that there is some book or magazine article, or whatever good source, that has discussed this as a general phenomenon linking different occurences of it, then I'll withdraw my concern. LadyofShalott 20:47, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the prompt response. I should have thanked you on May 10th. What I did do was start to draft you a reply, which grew to be too many times longer than your reply. Forgive me for not finding time trim it down. The Wittes article I already cited is 99 pages, with appendices and updates it is close to two hundred pages. It is one of several academic papers that states that the authors will treat stays in a suspicious guest houses offered, as justifications for continuing to hold Guantanamo captives as seriously as stays in guest houses explicitly alleged to be tied to terrorist groups. And it includes five Uyghurs who faced explicit allegations that they stayed in a Uyghur guest house on its list of 130 captives who faced allegations that their stay in a Taliban, al Qaeda, or other guest house justified their continued detention. I believe Epeefleche's comment was correct. WP:SYN is when someone cites a reference that asserts A, a reference that asserts B, and then the lapsing contributor draws novel conclusion C, connecting A and B in a new and unreferenced way. I believe I cited A, and I cited B, but did not draw novel conclusion C.
Again, let me apologize for not thanking you for your prompt reply earlier. Geo Swan (talk) 13:09, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
I did notice you raised your concern without committing yourself -- a cautious approach I admire and wish was followed more frequently. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 14:00, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Tide rolls RfA

I saw this edit earlier and meant to bring it up, but I got distracted. Was the garbled text in there a mistake? Soap 17:49, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh my goodness, yes, I have no idea how that happened. I meant to do nothing besides add my own support! :( I've occasionally seen other weird things happen - things that looked like someone else did something to one of my posts when they had no such intention - hence the "weirdness happens" comment on my userpage. LadyofShalott 18:41, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Message from User Hokeman

Earlier in the day, I partially fixed some of the bizarre comments that were placed on the RfA page for Tide Rolls because my posting was affected. I just looked in the history section and saw where you fixed the rest. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that a long-time, trusted administrator had "added" something like this concurrently with a statement of support. I was going to ask you if you understand the mechanics/process of how something like this can happen. Something similar happens to me about every 3 months or so — I notice that someone has created something weird in my name, because it shows up as a deleted article (redlink) when I go through my watchlist. --Hokeman (talk) 19:39, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I wish I could explain it. I've heard of other people having random bizarre things happen and get attributed to them. I asked about it at the Village Pump - Technical once, and did not really get a satisfactory response. It seems to be a known problem, but not one people care all that much about. I rather think we should since it looks like people are committing vandalism when they don't even know until later when someone else either asks about it or warns against vandalism - that's problematic in my eye. LadyofShalott 03:38, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. As new technology continues to be developed, maybe these random bizarre things will become more understood and can be defeated more easily. All the best--Hokeman (talk) 18:51, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey

I noticed this as I'm watching that page. To second your opinion, that was weird. I actually saw it last night but thought it could possibly be my browser burping. I also thought it could be that I've opted out of the "new and improved" version. Anyway, I'll check into some technical aspects when I'm capable of focusing. Thanks for your support, BTW. That should save your talk page from any future "thanks spam" :) Tiderolls 19:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't know - I've seen problems of this sort long before the new skin was inflicted upon us as the default. I once mistakenly accused an innocent user of vandalism when one of my posts was deleted from a conversation. As I said in the section below, I got no satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon. Anyway, you are welcome for the support - I don't participate in many RFA's, and generally only of people with whom I've interacted or at least noticed at work. I think you'll be a fine addition to the admin corps. LadyofShalott 03:42, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Hear, hear. You may have noticed that I didn't vote for you, and thereby I blessed your RfA--whenever I vote "support" stuff tends to go haywire. But congrats, Tide! Drmies (talk) 14:53, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Whoa. I removed a link from TCC; the contributor re-added it, with a URL link, and I removed it again, and within a second both their and mine second edits had disappeared from the history. Odd. Drmies (talk) 15:01, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

  • I did rant a lot. I'm pretty well in favor of the way the athlete guideline is written, and it actually keeps out more articles than it lets in (such as when someone insists that every player on their favorite college football team is entitled to his own separate shrine). We're heavy on sports and entertainment articles, and that's OK too-- people sharpen their skills by writing about what they're interested in and familiar with. However, I think that we need to give more encouragement to intelligently-written articles that aren't about the usual subjects here. Some of these guidelines are written almost as if people are apologizing for taking an interest in a book, a surgeon, a mathematician, etc., and that's sad. Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Willis Seaver Adams

Hi Lady, how are you? Listen, can you rename (or move) this file? I don't know if the proper licensing has taken place, BTW. It goes in the Willis Seaver Adams article. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 14:52, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Done Moved. Hey I'm doing fine - busy, but fine. How're you? I see someone has tagged the image for not having copyright info. LadyofShalott 03:14, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm fine, thanks--about to blow this gig for a few weeks overseas. I saw the tag, don't know what to say about that. The uploader is obviously a newbie (see the history of Willis Seaver Adams), and I guess they haven't responded--wait, there's no notice on their talk page. Do you know of a proper notification template? Thanks again, Lady! Drmies (talk) 14:36, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Oops, that notification is there. Drmies (talk) 14:37, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

To LadyofShalott

Thanks for the advice. I'm slowly getting two articles fixed up. It is slow since I have other duties at the lab. I'm still non-Emeritus and thus have a research group to watch and other duies.

LadyofShalott, at the beginning of my article "Stereochemistry of Ketonization of Enols and Enolates; Kinetic Protonation" someone put the following advice "The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject. Please help improve the article with a good introductory style."

That ws too soon since I've really just begun assembling things.

But I wonder who did that? I don't understand the impatience. How can I determine whether it is someone really knowledgeable - perhaps an organic chemist with little background or one with a good background - an Administrator or just another Editor.

Anyway, thanks for the advice about section headers.

Best wishes,

For a chemical article the beginnings should be clear. Also I have Links for almost every item. I will try to put in some more basic stuff but need time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hezimmerman (talkcontribs) 12:30, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, well, the general answer is that you can look at the article history; the specific answer is that I put the tag on the article. It´s fine that you are not finished with it, but I commented on what was there. "Anyway, thanks for the advice about section headers." You're welcome!--LadyofShalott 02:42, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks (moved from awards talk page)

thanks for your tweaks on Scottish Cemetery--Stephencdickson (talk) 14:41, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Salute!

I hope you have a lovely Memorial Day weekend. Random side note - I saw this today and thought of you. APK whisper in my ear 21:35, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

I hope you had a good Mem weekend, APK! I went here on Saturday and had a lot of fun! Not exactly the weekend, but I went tonight to a signing by an author I like. Fun stuff! LadyofShalott 05:10, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Advice re: Excalibur and Talk:Excalibur

Do you know how to prevent another user deleting information (and deleting the discussion addition as to why the article was altered) ... I have been trying to correct the entymology on "Excalibur" and a couple of Welsh guys (I presume due to their tag) seem heart set on forcing a Welsh rather than obvious Latin root on the word. Is it possible to force a debate before they delete any discussion point? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephencdickson (talkcontribs) 09:21, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Having looked at the recent history of both the article and the talk page, I think you are both acting in a combination of proper and improper manners. It was incorrect of you to remove sourced material and add unsourced material; it was correct of the other editors to reverse you on that. It was incorrect of Cagwinn to remove your talk page comment, and I have reverted him/her on that action. I suggest you find sources that support your particular favored etymology before adding it back into the article. You could also discuss it in a more calm manner than shouting get a dictionary. LadyofShalott 05:20, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Despite his claim of "removing sourced materials" I removed nothing of what was there already ...I simply added a line in front of his entymology saying "another (perhaps less convincing) derivation is given as"... he makes it sound as if I sabotaged or removed his input which I certainly did not. I am perfectly happy to site sources as I know at least one where it comes up, but do you think it is "safe" given that it has been removed twice before. Not that I need to here (it comes up in Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable), but can one cite a Latin dictionary as a source? What I was particularly concerned about was complete deletion of my input on the discussion page for "Excalibur" explaining my actions. OK... it could have been done more sensitively but that was partly in annoyance at there deletion of what I had just put in. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephencdickson (talkcontribs) 10:44, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
OK, having looked again, I stand corrected - you did merely add, not remove. citing a Latin dictionary would not be sufficient, unless the term Excalibur is there as a whole. If it is not there as a whole, you could use the dictionary only to cite the meanings of individual portions; combining those into the "obvious" entire term would constitute original research. What you need is a published source that says Excalibur has the etymology you advocate. Also, you need a source that says that the Welsh derivation currently in the article is "less satisfactory". Given the plethora of material that has been written about the Arthurian material, I expect such sources exist somewhere. It is up to you to find them before putting it in the article again. (As for the the talk page discussion, as I've already said, I reverted the removal of your comments.) LadyofShalott 15:07, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Also, if you look at the Talk:Excalibur#Etymology 2 section of the talk page, there is a thoughtful section addressing this proposed etymology from the opposite point-of-view. Engaging in a reasoned manner using sources in that particular discussion might be a more fruitful avenue for you to pursue. LadyofShalott 15:12, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I will try again and give Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable as the source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephencdickson (talkcontribs) 13:52, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I give up! I put it back in (including source) and it was taken out again 5 minutes later! Given the numerous references to the source in the discussion page I dont see what the problem is... some people obviously just want it to be Welsh...--Stephencdickson (talk) 14:12, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I've commented on the article talk page. LadyofShalott 14:35, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
