Battle of Frenchman's Creek

I was looking at Battle of Frenchman's Creek (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) from Special:Newpages. The article had some malformed reference tags that were causing it to display incorrectly. I was going to fix those tags, but you deleted the article. Other than the reference tag problems, the article did indeed have content -- quite a bit, actually. Could you restore it, and maybe fix those tags? --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 18:24, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

I need your help - edit war

Lady of Shalott,

Good evening. I am not sure how to approach this. I came across your name semi-randomly,can there be such a thing? I am involved in an edit war over a "strict no touching policy" article located at FCPS- Fairfax County Public Schools, under the article section - "No Contact Rule Controversy"

I believe the article should state why the rule of not allowing students to touch, including no 'high-fives', hugs, handshakes, etc. is idiotic. The other side only wants the school systems explanation of why they have the rule. The system argues for cultural differences, apparently there are a few Muslims in the school, and that a high-five can lead to a fistfight and that hugs - even among girls - are bad naughty things.

Anyway, if we can get a NPOV editor to write/re-write the article section balancing the views the editor who is against the current NPOV will agree to the new NPOV. - Oh, that was bad.

Would you be kind enough to have a look and see if you would do this for us? I may have already given tedickey, that is the other editor, a reason to reject you as an editor because I contacted you. However, I conclude the only way to handle this is with an unknown editor. As he is free to write to you as well explaining, as he claims, how I am biased, soapboxing,non-npov, switching ip's, the father of the child, someone associated with the child, and that I.. "have to prove that (a) you are not Henri Beaulieu (or a close relative, or someone who has a personal interest in him), and (b) that you (singular or plural) are not the person(s) who have been making edits in this thread." Actually, that's what he said before. I think he is okay with a neutral edit now.

Can you respond on my page? I am not sure I know how to get back here. I will bookmark this page.

Nipsey Hussle

Hi. I see you've deleted Nipsey Hussle a few times as WP:CSD#G4, Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. If you read the discussion it pretty clearly stated that the result was "delete without prejudice against recreation if and when this artist eventually meets the notability guidelines." The article is very different from what was deleted and notability is asserted with him being on the the Epic label. A quick google search shows a pretty fair amount of hits from at least moderately notable sources like the OC Register. I think the article needs work, but the repeated speedies may be a bit premature. Toddst1 (talk) 06:18, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

It is a number, with a name, I have claimed that this number is my number, and have put my name to it. Just like any mathematician, physicist or other number related proffesion does. You cannot say it is vandalism, it is just a number. All mathematical contants are made up. It is people like you who stop the furthering of scientific research, i study physics and derived myself a constant. That is perfectly legal and is a much more warranted page than other such pages that get created. Actually, what I think could be most beneficial to you is to point by point using direct quotes and diffs show exactly where he is incorrect in what he says. If he has lied about you, and you show that to be the case, he will be seen to have been in the wrong. If you just change his remarks though, people will see that behavior on your part and be likely focus on it instead of the substance of what was changed. Do you see what I'm saying here? LoS did you even look at the link I posted in my original comment about the Whippoorwill? It was to an audio recording of the song. It didn't sound like Whippoorwill to me. But the constellations don't look a whole lot like what they are supposed to be either, so there you go. Of course I'm not into medicinal herbs... Maybe I'm too down to earth?

By the way I got a laugh out of your gluttonous comment, which I just noticed. Hey Aleta, need a watchful eye from you

Long time! I came after adding a photo to a musicians' biography page named Capleton. Apparently there are strong feelings about anti-gay sentiments (and allegations that he advocates the killing or harming of homosexuals). Seems like POV on both sides, though there his anti-gay stance is referenced. I reverted someone who reverted my addition to the article. All I did was remove the Jamaican flag from the infobox, add a new photo, and move the older one down, but I think it had something to do with anti (or pro) gay issues. Would you look at it, the last few contribs (and reverts) to the article and see maybe if it needs semi-protection, or whatever is done in such cases? Hi Leah, I don't think semi-protection is justified at this point. The IP's most recent contribution, which you reverted, was certainly not acceptable having some unsourced or poorly-sourced (to a blog) negative information on a BLP. It was on all the news though, even I heard about it while it was going on. The way I wrote the article may be a reason for it sounding promotional...my purpose was to inform viewers of the diamond grading practices and systems used as well as why ImaGem stands out. Category?

Lady, I give up--I don't know what to do to "make" a category. Do I have to type in some text? I looked at some other university faculty, but all they seemed to have was a category called something like "Category:University of Tennessee at Martin" and there is no such category yet for Auburn Montgomery. Should I make that? I'm also doing this because the first one I made didn't have the right name--we are called "Auburn Montgomery" and I changed that in John Veres. Now, you added the "Auburn faculty" category, but is that right? I mean, we are something of a satellite, but Martin faculty isn't categorized under "University of Tennessee faculty". Well, haven't you actually made the relevant category already? I put it as a subcategory of the Cat:AU faculty. It's a genuine mess and there are serious COI issues based on the original poster. The poster hasn't touched it since it was posted, either. Question

I'm wondering why this is considered acceptable if my questioning him isn't. He is dragging up an issue that is not related to the question at hand. I reverted it and another editor came in to return it. I'd comment that recognizing that each connection brings a different IP is compelling reason to have a regular account rather than expect everyone to accept it is the same person. From a recent post at Talk:Unitarian Bahaism I went looking and saw something I don't know what to make of. "There will eventually be a Wikipedia entry on the UBA along with a team of edit warriors." 3 weeks ago[3] (search down the page for "wiki"). Is this important? In the past I had been given to understand it would be inappropriate to pull in people for effect. But if it doesn't mean anything I figured you could clarify. Congrats for "your" day!

Hello LadyofShalott. Congratulations for having now your day. It must feel good! Well, since you have been so nice and kind, I couldn´t refrain myself from not asking you for advice. I have been involved in a hard discussion regarding an historical issue. It has to do with the monopolization of a serious of related articles by one editor. basicaly, this editor User:DIREKTOR insists in considering an resistance monarchic movement (Chetniks) and its leader (Draža Mihailović) a Nazy collaborator. The movement fought the Germans, but also the Tito´s Partisans (another resistance group). Since the second ones won the war, Tito condemned and executed Mihailovic, charging him on treason. USA organised an post-mortum trial and freed the movement of the charges, and condecorated Mihailovic. France too. Since the movement fought both, the Germans and the Partisans, some detachments ocasionally collaborated, but it was maynly a three side war. Anyway, this user, Direktor, manipulating and exageratins sources that talk about that ocasional collaboration, wants to impose that the entire movement and Mihailovic are to be considered "notable collaborators", and its role as resistance efforts ignored. Well, despite WP:AGF, this user as a Croat and assumed Titoist, Tito was the leader of the Partisans, a communist guerilla, obviously has no nice feelings towards a Serb monarchic movement, and edited the article having in mind only his POV. The worst is that when other editors want to edit the articles, he is very agressive and reverts all that doesn´t fit his ideology. He was blocked several times for breaking the 3r role. I demanded that the article includes more NPOV, so a discussion started. Another editor that also agrees with me already asked for mediation, so wi will see what will happend. A nazy collaboration accusation is a too serious accusation to be left unsourced. Anyway, my problem is regarding this users attitude towards me. He constantly manipulates my words (same way as he does with the sources) and does all the possible and impossible so his version will prevail. He unfairlly accused me of many things, but when talking about me or my edits he used the following expressions: Lack of knolledge/info (7times), Nonsence (5 times), Horrible/faulty grammar (5 times), Me having no idea whatsoever (3 times), childish (2 times), Lying (2 times), Me being nationalist (2 times), unnencyclopedic (2 times), Absurd (2 times), Stupid (1 time), Clumsy (1 time), Silly (1 time), Ridiculous (2 times), Slauderous (1 time), My opinion irrelevant (1 time), me joking (1 time), Missinformed (1 time), Utterly flawed ideas (1 time) and many more indirectly tageting me. When I asked him please to be polite and avoid using this expressions, he accused me of imagining provocation. He also constantly speaks as he is a "community". Thank you for your kind words. Now to your question: at this point, having only read what you've written above, and not the other relevant pages, I would say just participate fully in the mediation. A mediator is not likely to put up with abusive comments from any parties to the mediation, and the mediator should help you all work out the content disputes so that the article accurately reflects what sources say rather than the point of view of any individual editor. I have been meaning to write a note to you for some time.

A long time back, December?, you had a comment about my necessarily being old since I was a WWII veteran. But you also had some more favorable comments.

I wanted to note that I am still unretired (i.e. non-Emeritus) and still as active as ever. Thus sometimes chronological age doesn't correlate with "operational" age.

Also, I've appreciated your help on occasion relative to the Birch Reduction (Detailed) article I submitted. The old Birch Reduction article was limited and a mess. Since this was one of my reseach areas, I wanted a good article for Wikipedia. I did not anticipate the resistance I would encounter.

Thus Wikipedia is really great for non-scientific articles. But the predilection for Texts as sources and the dislike of refereed journal references led that original Birch article into its difficulties. Having a Wikipedia article as Readable and Wrong rather than more Detailed and Right reminded me of the Lewis Carroll "Through the Looking Glass". I guess I felt as if I had been through that Looking Glass myself in Wikipedia.

I have now given up on the Birch article since it seems that the same authors responsible for the old inaccurate Birch article are not modifying the one I wrote. At least my name will not be associated with the article.

I am impressed with a number of the Wikipedia Editors and Administrators but not with all.

My writing finally was some explanation of the situation.

Well first, just to clear the air since you seem somewhat put out by the comment about your age, I had to hunt back to find it, and I was not the one who said that. Anyway, I'm always glad to help when I can. I do not think you should "give up" on the article. You have done a tremendous amount of work on it, and Wikipedia is the better for it. You should know that it is always possible to see who contributed what to an article by clicking the history tab at the top of the article - that is why the history merge that we talked about was important. Thus, anyone intersted can see exacly what parts of the article you wrote. If you see errors being (re)introduced to the article, you can and should correct them and point out why they are wrong on the talk page of the article. You recently made a comment about not pointing out errors because when you did so before someone just used your comments just to fix them - well, yes, that's a lot of how Wikipedia works. Thanks for the resply and comments. The comment about age was not that critical but it is interesting that it was not from you.

Regarding the Birch article, I did list the errors in that old article. Some were fixed up, I think by others than the originators or the article. In contrast, I did encounter considerable resistance (e.g. from V8rik). One comment was that on checking with Jerry March's text revealed no errors. This comment revealed the lack of expertise by that Wikipedia editor. Jerry March has a very useful text which superficially covers all kinds of reactions, but only a page or two with the highlights of the Birch Reduction. Somewhere along the line I got remarks about Textbook references being good and preferred while refereed journal articles were not desired. But most of the material in my Birch article would not be found in textbooks but it detailed in journal articles.

LadyofShalott, I do plan to go over the merged article and correct errors. But I don't plan on submitting more articles. Originally I had an extensive list of items already in Wikipedia but not appreciably covered and not properly referenced. Also the list has similar items missing from Wikipedia.

I now am trying to find a way to get my "User space" deleted since I don't plan to use that material.

I've been correcting one item on the Birch article. There had been one numbering for the cyclohexadienyl anion and the Table giving the details was for the simpler Pentadienyl numbering. But that had confused someone who then wanted a reference for the second item which really was the same. Now I've used the Cyclohexadienyl numbering in the Table (with the risk of making an error. I'll proof-read this again to make certain I have the numbering correct.

Hi, sure. It looks to me like this article takes a number of individual incidents and ties them together with the thesis that Uyghur guesthouses (in general) are suspected of ties to Islamic militancy. I do not see that any RS has already discussed this phenomenon as a whole. Perhaps it has; if you can show that there is some book or magazine article, or whatever good source, that has discussed this as a general phenomenon linking different occurences of it, then I'll withdraw my concern. Thanks for the prompt response. I should have thanked you on May 10th. What I did do was start to draft you a reply, which grew to be too many times longer than your reply. Forgive me for not finding time trim it down. The Wittes article I already cited is 99 pages, with appendices and updates it is close to two hundred pages. It is one of several academic papers that states that the authors will treat stays in a suspicious guest houses offered, as justifications for continuing to hold Guantanamo captives as seriously as stays in guest houses explicitly alleged to be tied to terrorist groups. And it includes five Uyghurs who faced explicit allegations that they stayed in a Uyghur guest house on its list of 130 captives who faced allegations that their stay in a Taliban, al Qaeda, or other guest house justified their continued detention. I believe Epeefleche's comment was correct. WP:SYN is when someone cites a reference that asserts A, a reference that asserts B, and then the lapsing contributor draws novel conclusion C, connecting A and B in a new and unreferenced way. I believe I cited A, and I cited B, but did not draw novel conclusion C.

Earlier in the day, I partially fixed some of the bizarre comments that were placed on the RfA page for Tide Rolls because my posting was affected. I just looked in the history section and saw where you fixed the rest. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that a long-time, trusted administrator had "added" something like this concurrently with a statement of support. I was going to ask you if you understand the mechanics/process of how something like this can happen. Something similar happens to me about every 3 months or so — I notice that someone has created something weird in my name, because it shows up as a deleted article (redlink) when I go through my watchlist. --Hokeman (talk) 19:39, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I wish I could explain it. I've heard of other people having random bizarre things happen and get attributed to them. I asked about it at the Village Pump - Technical once, and did not really get a satisfactory response. It seems to be a known problem, but not one people care all that much about. I rather think we should since it looks like people are committing vandalism when they don't even know until later when someone else either asks about it or warns against vandalism - that's problematic in my eye. I don't know - I've seen problems of this sort long before the new skin was inflicted upon us as the default. I once mistakenly accused an innocent user of vandalism when one of my posts was deleted from a conversation. As I said in the section below, I got no satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon. Anyway, you are welcome for the support - I don't participate in many RFA's, and generally only of people with whom I've interacted or at least noticed at work. • I did rant a lot. I'm pretty well in favor of the way the athlete guideline is written, and it actually keeps out more articles than it lets in (such as when someone insists that every player on their favorite college football team is entitled to his own separate shrine). We're heavy on sports and entertainment articles, and that's OK too-- people sharpen their skills by writing about what they're interested in and familiar with. However, I think that we need to give more encouragement to intelligently-written articles that aren't about the usual subjects here. Some of these guidelines are written almost as if people are apologizing for taking an interest in a book, a surgeon, a mathematician, etc., and that's sad. Anyway, thanks for the kind words. Thanks for the advice. I'm slowly getting two articles fixed up. It is slow since I have other duties at the lab. I'm still non-Emeritus and thus have a research group to watch and other duies.

LadyofShalott, at the beginning of my article "Stereochemistry of Ketonization of Enols and Enolates; Kinetic Protonation" someone put the following advice "The introduction to this article provides insufficient context for those unfamiliar with the subject. Please help improve the article with a good introductory style."

That ws too soon since I've really just begun assembling things.

But I wonder who did that? I don't understand the impatience. How can I determine whether it is someone really knowledgeable - perhaps an organic chemist with little background or one with a good background - an Administrator or just another Editor.

Anyway, thanks for the advice about section headers.

Advice re: Excalibur and Talk:Excalibur

Do you know how to prevent another user deleting information (and deleting the discussion addition as to why the article was altered) ... I have been trying to correct the entymology on "Excalibur" and a couple of Welsh guys (I presume due to their tag) seem heart set on forcing a Welsh rather than obvious Latin root on the word. Having looked at the recent history of both the article and the talk page, I think you are both acting in a combination of proper and improper manners. It was incorrect of you to remove sourced material and add unsourced material; it was correct of the other editors to reverse you on that. It was incorrect of Cagwinn to remove your talk page comment, and I have reverted him/her on that action. I suggest you find sources that support your particular favored etymology before adding it back into the article. You could also discuss it in a more calm manner than shouting get a dictionary. Despite his claim of "removing sourced materials" I removed nothing of what was there already ...I simply added a line in front of his entymology saying "another (perhaps less convincing) derivation is given as"... he makes it sound as if I sabotaged or removed his input which I certainly did not. I am perfectly happy to site sources as I know at least one where it comes up, but do you think it is "safe" given that it has been removed twice before. Not that I need to here (it comes up in Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable), but can one cite a Latin dictionary as a source? What I was particularly concerned about was complete deletion of my input on the discussion page for "Excalibur" explaining my actions. OK, having looked again, I stand corrected - you did merely add, not remove. citing a Latin dictionary would not be sufficient, unless the term Excalibur is there as a whole. If it is not there as a whole, you could use the dictionary only to cite the meanings of individual portions; combining those into the "obvious" entire term would constitute original research. What you need is a published source that says Excalibur has the etymology you advocate. Also, you need a source that says that the Welsh derivation currently in the article is "less satisfactory". Given the plethora of material that has been written about the Arthurian material, I expect such sources exist somewhere. It is up to you to find them before putting it in the article again. (As for the the talk page discussion, as I've already said, I reverted the removal of your comments.) LadyofShalott 15:07, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Also, if you look at the Talk:Excalibur#Etymology 2 section of the talk page, there is a thoughtful section addressing this proposed etymology from the opposite point-of-view.
