James Muir Cameron (industrialist)[edit]

Thanks for starting this article, and the one on his father. I had thought I might do so today, so that's one less task for me. However, I am puzzled by the naming. His surname was Fletcher, so that should appear in the title. How it should be disambiguated from the article on his father I'm not sure; perhaps by using the full name James Muir Cameron Fletcher, or James Fletcher II or James Fletcher Junior. I think I'd favour the "II" or the full name; I don't see much use of the "Junior" other than in Wikipedia. If the name is unique, there's no need to have a disambiguation part to the title, such as (industrialist).-gadfium 20:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I think the page James Fletcher should become a disambiguation page. The existing entomologist article there is probably not obviously the most famous person of that name. I suggest raising the matter on the talk page and seeing if there are any objection rather than unilaterally moving the page. I'll do it if you like.-gadfium 20:15, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for Image:NZR g class garratt.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NZR g class garratt.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Republican news[edit]

Hi! Apart from Australia and Jamaica, which I suppose you're well aware of, there's two more bits of republican good news:

  • Solomon Islands will finally finish its constitutional reform process in October 2008; the new constitution will certainly be republican (though it's a bit difficult to find outright confirmation on this, this draft from some time ago, for instance, also declares the state a republic).
  • There's a rumour running around that Barbados may finally see the republic referendum next month which has been planned since at least 2005.

Hi Lholden - just contacting you and a couple of other editors I know of who work on NZR articles to let you know that I've just created Category:Railway stations in New Zealand, to parallel similar categories for other countries. Haven't really begun to populate it yet (any help you could give there would be useful), but basically I'm just letting you know it's there and can be used. Greenland[edit]

I saw your interview on Wikinews, and there's a misconception about Greenland and Denmark that needs to be cleared up. You give Greenland as "an example of a country with a governor-general, but is under direct rule from Denmark." Neither is the case.

Greenland has been constitutionally part of Denmark since 1953, enjoying Home Rule since 1979, and has two seats in the Folketing, as do the Faroe Islands. There is a High Commissioner or Rigsombudsmand who represents the Queen of Denmark as head of state as well as the Danish government. The relationship is similar to the one that New Caledonia has France.

Iceland, on the other hand, retained the Danish monarch as head of state from independence in 1918 until it became a republic in1944. There is an independence movement in the Faroe Islands as well as Greenland, where the possibility of keeping the Queen of Denmark as head of state has been mooted, although you can probably work out how the Republican Party feels about that. Niuean election[edit]

Hi! As you're from NZ, I suppose it's easier for you to find information on the Niuean election yesterday...? I haven't been able to find *anything* on it in the news, which makes me rather sceptic about the validity of the date we've got... Thanks! —Nightstallion 21:17, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Normally there'd be something on Radio New Zealand International, but the only references I can see anywhere were speculations made in January that an election might be held in April. There's supposed to be one every three years, and the previous one was in 2005. On the other hand, the 2005 election was held on 30 April, and results appeared in mid May, so maybe it's just too early to see any results.-gadfium 21:38, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MP for Wellington Suburbs, Liberal Party (1908-11) and then member for Wellington North, Reform Party (1918-28)-see Wilson, NZ Parliamentary Record p.213.

At the 1931 election, Luke stood as an Independent and was placed third with 2,243 votes-see Habershon, A Study in Politics: 1928-1931, MA Auck, Appendix ix. At p.130 the author says that "Luke, a former mayor of Wellington, seems to have attracted votes from both Labour and Reform". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.86.45.185 (talk) 04:02, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The New Zealand Hansard[edit]

Can you please give me an exact quote from the Hansard which proves that New Zealand adopted the statute of Westminster in 1947 because of matters to do with Japanese aggression in world war II. Quite frankly, it doesn't make the least sense that there could be any connection whatsever between the two situations.

If what you say is true, then why did they not adopt it in 1942 when Australia did. David Tombe (talk) 06:48, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply on my own talk page. I shall look forward to seeing the exact details in Hansard when you are next in Auckland. The more that I think about it, the more I realize that there could be no possible link whatsoever between New Zealand's decision to adopt the statute of Westminster in 1947, and Japan's advance in the Pacific in 1942.
New Zealand failed to halt that advance just as much as the UK did, and I don't blame either of them because the UK was up against fortress Europe at the time, and New Zealand was helping the British 8th Army in North Africa. A combined strategy involving a large group of allied powers which included both the UK and New Zealand, eventually brought down Germany, Italy and Japan.
Curtin in Australia had a run in with Churchill over the return of one of the Australian divisions from North Africa following Japan's entry into the war. Churchill wanted them diverted to Burma, while Curtin wanted them home. I can see both points of view. Churchill, Roosevelt, and Jan Smuts of South Africa understood the necessity of the priority to defeat Germany first. Churchill also obviously felt that India was under a more immediate threat from Japan, than was Australia. Curtin understandably saw the Japanese at his New Guinea doorstep, and considered that to be the priority. He was angry with Churchill and he adopted the statute of Westminster in 1942 in order to give himself the full power to conduct the war as he saw best.
New Zealand is a completely different story. I don't doubt that perhaps some New Zealand MP's who were ill disposed to the British Empire, decided in 1947 to take a cheap opportunistic swipe on the back of the 1942 crisis, when the adoption issue was being discussed in the New Zealand parliament in 1947. But I would need to see quotes from Hansard that gave solid evidence that the crisis of 1942 had any bearing on the reasons for the adoption. I would need to see the government's introductory speech when the bill was first introduced in parliament. I would totally disregard any opportunistic whinges about the 1942 crisis, coming from a few anti-British MP's throughout the course of the debate. Fair use rationale for File:RMANZ.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:RMANZ.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. I notice you have contributed significantly to Mount Albert by-election, 2009. A peer review of the article has taken place, and your help on fixing the listed criticism would be appreciated. Thanks, Adabow (talk) 09:34, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WPNZ template[edit]

I've tried to start a discussion on the WPNZ template with respect to the governments project, but this hasn't attracted any contributions. Given that you sometimes contribute to pages on politics, I thought you might be interested in this. Schwede66 22:48, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Provinces of New Zealand[edit]

Hello Lholden, I'm assuming that your account on commons is Holden, and if that's correct, then you are the author of [File:New Zealand provinces.png the provinces map]. It nicely shows the ten provinces that we've had as shown on Provinces of New Zealand, but the provinces never existed like this simultaneously. As such, it's not strictly correct. I've changed the caption of the map, but mucked it up somewhat, somebody else reverted it, but that also wasn't right. The current caption is my clumsy attempt of rectifying it.

Maybe what we should have is a series of maps, showing the boundaries of the provinces the way things evolved, as follows:

  1. the three provinces of 1841
  2. going to two provinces in 1846
  3. six provinces established in 1853, the nucleus of what we still have today
  4. Hawke's Bay split off from Wellington in 1858
  5. Marlborough split off from Nelson in 1859
  6. Southland split off from Otago in 1861
  7. Southland reunited with Otago in 1870
  8. Westland split off from Canterbury in 1873

So the 'problem' is that Southland and Westland never existed at the same time.

Can you see yourself producing the series of maps based on what you've already done? If yes, that would be great! A side issue is that this map image should be recreated using vector graphics as an SVG file, according to a note that is with the file.

If we want to go even more fancy, we could create a gif that cycles through those pages. Obviously, that would require that the maps have some labels on them (e.g. the start year as a minimum). I've seen this on some Australian map that cycled through the elections, showing how their states changed from labour to national (or whatever their parties are called there) and back again. Pretty cool stuff. Let me know what you think (you can reply here). Schwede66 23:17, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand politics task force[edit]

This user wants you to join WikiProject NZ politics.

Heya Lewis, Any chance you could have a look over New Zealand order of precedence. I was always under the impression that the Queen did not appear in teh New Zealand order of precedence, she was skipped over - but of course as HoS she would always rank first. May try and dig up the reference Gazette later. Brian | (Talk) 01:03, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I've got no idea. It seems surprising the Queen wouldn't be included in the order of precedence though. Will look into it. --Lholden (talk) 03:37, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:KiwiRail DFT 7008.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:KiwiRail DFT 7008.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 08:25, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:KiwiRail DFT 7008.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [6], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Lewis. Thanks for editing my contribution re Ab 745. Have just made acquaintance with the owner Keith Hancock in Waitara. He hosted my wife and I for a couple of days while we looked over the locomotive and toured the Waitara Preservation Society line on one of the motor trolleys. Have some photos of the boiler if you wish to have them posted online. He works on the Ab745 in Stratford every Sunday .

Ab steam restoration[edit]

Hi LJ Holden. Thanks for editing the AB 745 locomotive details that I attempted to update. Appreciate it. I have just spent a couple of days in Taranaki looking over the loco with Keith Hancock (the owner), and have photos if you need them.---- Regards.sparkyjim —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sparkyjim (talkcontribs) 12:26, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
