Transphobia edits

hi, I reverted your edits. Although many of your minor edits are fine they are bundled with deleting content and refs which isn't fine and introducing new content which seems wonky (feminists authors). As a suggestion do the minor grammar fixes first as no one will be bothered on those. Then introduce new material, then look to deleting material. I've removed the deletion tag from the article in order to give you an opportunity to make improvements that might (or might not) prevent it from being deleted. Yo, Kootenayvolcano. Wanted to tell you in person that following lack of any other real protestation at Template talk:Discrimination, I've gone ahead & added Lesbophobia to the template, per your suggestion, & have also added the template to the article itself. I also added info to the article from a couple articles I ran across a couple of days ago about the rapes and murders of black lesbians in South Africa that South African LGBT groups are saying are motivated by lesbophobia.

Thanks for starting this article. Despite my initial doubts -- well damn. It's an important topic, & damned if I understand why I didn't get that before, having been around the block a few years as a lesbian (actually nearly three decades, since coming out at age 19) & being completely aware of the lesbophobia within the feminist movement itself -- the whole Betty Friedan "Lavender Menace" crap from the early '70s, etc. So bonk me over the head. Anyway, I've done some preliminary research on web-based resources as well as of academic databases of journals available in my local university library, so it's likely I'll be adding more to this article after I get a little further on my long-term commitment to the Battle of Washita River article I got myself involved with.

Meantime, also wanted to be sure you were aware of Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies in case you wished to join.

Kootenay Coop Radio

Just so you know, Wikipedia's rule for North American radio stations is that they go at their call signs. The commonly known brand name can be a redirect, if it's unique (which it certainly is in this case), but we do have to keep the station at its CXXX-format call sign. The main motivation behind this is so that there's some consistency in how radio stations are presented — it would look really sloppy if we had a random and disorganized mixture of call signs and brand names coexisting in the same radio categories. Sinixt language needed

Hi; I see you have lots of Sinixt sources/resources; a missing element in Wikipedia's coverage of BC First Nations langauge is a language article; no linguist has started one yet (as is the case with most language articles) and all I could myself pull off is a stub saying hte language exists, but it won't survive unless it has a cite or two. This in the wake of an edit to Incomappleux River where Okanagan language was taken out by an IP user who subtituted Interior Salish as "correct" - which it's not as Interior Salish is a language group, not a language. The BCGNIS source says Incommapleux is of Okanagan origin; if you have a different cite saying it's Sinixt then by all means....why I came to you, other than your very evident focus on the Sinixt article, is the IP user who made that "correction" also made an edit to your talkpage (the section titled "Article").Skookum1 (talk) 18:51, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Skookum1. You are very right about that. You are right, that Sinixt would be the language, rather than Interior Salish. I was told recently by Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, author of The Geography of Memory, that Incomappleux was a Sinixt term. I will ask her where she got that info and try to provide a citation. Good to know that; my intentions/orientations are often misunderstood. I'm very strongly against made-up history and against pejorative accounts of events, even when presented neutrally by the use of subjective selection of evidence and "pointed wording" that still gets around NPOV. Anyway.... Nk'mapeleqs is given as an Okanagan language word in BCGNIS, from Randy Bouchard as a source, but it doesn't say straight out that Incomappleux is from an Okanagan word; I'd imagine there's a similar Sinixt'sn one (guessing at the name based on those of other Interior Salish languages...), but a while back there was or still is maybe a school of thought that Sinixt is a dialect of Okanagan, like Spahomin; but from what I udnerstand about the Interior Salish languages, they're all in a way dialects of each other (not in purely linguistic terms) and really close; a cite saying it's of Sinixt origin vs the BCGNIS mention of the Okanagan language is what it's going to take to say that here instead. That the Okanagan also frequented the Arrow Lakes also indicates that it could be of Okanagan origin, dpeending on who the native informant who first told the "naming white man" the word/name. Or, again, it could be that for a long time the Sinixt were perceived as a branch of the Okanagan...but then so are, again, the other southerly neighbouring peoples of the Okanagan.Skookum1 (talk) 04:01, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

East/West Kootenay division question

Hi, wanted to get your opinion on the East Kootenay/West Kootenay division point; the Kootenays article has two possible versions, I can see the logic of the one that says Creston is in the East Kootenay, because of the time zone thing and also because it never used to be road-linked to Nelson/Trail/Castlegar except by the Balfour ferry....it seems odd to view Riondel as in the East Kootenay, though, as I associate that term with Kimberly-Cranbrook and beyond, maybe starting at Yahk (if not at Creston). You seem to be much more a Kootenay person than I am so I thought I'd ask.....reason being I I just went and created Category:Settlements in the West Kootenay and Category:Settlements in the Slocan and Category:Settlements in the Boundary Country and wanted to start Category:Settlements in the East Kootenay with Elk Valley and Columbia Valley subcats maybe.....I've never liked using the regional district cats to classify anything, especially ghost towns, Indian Reserves and basically anything that's not directly part of RD jurisdiction/governance, so I do "end runs" on those cats with things like Category:Settlements in the Chilcotin etc...anyway your thoughts on this appreciated; the term "Central Kootenay" just grates on me because it's of such recent coinage, and it's almost like the government made it to "usurp the identity" of the West Kootenay, with all its cultural and political baggage/history....Skookum1 (talk) 23:30, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Also on my mind for a while, other than an East/West split (and how you would define that division), is I've never liked that map on the Kootenays page, your thoughts on the boundaries shown welcome (best reply on that article's talkpage), and on how to approach a Silvery Slocan article on the silver rush....it's almost like there should be a Kootenay workgroup, but the same could be said about the Omineca or Cariboo or Skeena or VI huh? LGBT topics

Thanks for the kind words. As I also mentioned just now to SeMelmoth, I'd be very happy to set up a workgroup page for LGBT issues in Canada. Although I know I'm not the only Canadian editor with an interest in LGBT topics, a little too often it's felt like I was because there's not much active coordination going on, with the result that a lot of stuff we really should have has fallen through the cracks. The workgroup wouldn't be a full WikiProject in its own right, but just a subpage of Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada and Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies, where we could do things like keeping a list of article topics that people might want to tackle creating or cleaning up, compiling a list of resources that can be used, and other discussion that might be warranted. Hi; figured I should let you know I've created a few articles for places in the Kootenays as part of working up/filling out List of communities in British Columbia. I think there's another Kootenayite or two out there, mostly inactive though, I'll see who I can enlist, and will poll WP:Idaho and WP:Montana about this, there used to be an Eastern Washington group too, think it's just WP:WA now....WP Okanagan is cross-border as this should really be also, even though other than the name of the river "Kootenai" isn't used much in the US other than for the river and the Nat'l Forest by that name. One big article that's needed IMO is Silvery Slocan or Slocan Silver Rush though that latter one isn't a good title, partly because the silver rush was also beyond the Slocan in particular and because it wasn't just about silver; "Silvery Slocan" is very citable and refers to the era. Steamboats of Kootenay Lake and the Kootenai River needed

On the same general topic of "coverage of the Kootenays", this has been a redlink on {{Steamboats British Columbia}} for a while, I did some research on this with the author of Steamboats of the Upper Fraser River and have been meaning for a while, if not for all the crossfire on inanities and endless maintenance edits and CfDs and such, to get at Steamboats of Harrison Lake and the Lower Fraser River and Steamboats of Kamloops Lake and Shuswap Lake (or Steamboats of the Thompson River and Shuswap Lake maybe) but just haven't had time. The Kootenay/Kootenai title as presented was the result of long discussions about how to cover those routes; editors from WP:WikiProject Idaho and WP:WikiProject Montana may be around to help on the Kootenai River material.Skookum1 (talk) 07:31, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

POV Sinixt edits need monitoring

Just after you added the Sinixt version of the name of Nakusp there came a change obliterating mention of the Ktunaxa version and of the territorial claims of the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc. I fixed that just now but it's clear that User:Sinkalip has an agenda; another change was on the Rock Creek or Rock Creek Gold Rush page where "Kettle Indians" were changed to "Sinixt Indians" and on other articles where mention of the Okanagan people was also removed. I suspect you may be more diplomatic dealing with Sinixt activism than I am, and may be able to deal with User:Sinkalip's activities in less strong language than I might use; obliterating someone else's history to assert your own is not acceptable in Wikipedia. There's a history for me with "them", via an old argument on The Tyee (which actually brought threats of violence to my email if I "didn't leave the Sinixt alone".Skookum1 (talk) 08:14, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Gotta confess the Ktunaxa name-supplantation that seems to have happened on Nakusp, British Columbia I think I noticed a while back and though "hm, this should be interesting" so left it (don't know the icon for smiling devil). User:Kwamikagami is my go-to guy for language stuff, though there are many possible contributors/editors around {{NorthAmNative}} who specialized in indigenous language materials also. [undent] Language articles have their own set formats and such; WP:WikiProject Languages prob has templates. Within NorthAmNative a number of years ago, some parameters were set out for coverage; different articles for governments and organizations, people/ethno/history material, reserves/reservations, and languages all have separate articles and should ultimately in every case have separate articles; soemtimes seems redundant and difficult to sort out in other parts of Canada for various reasons, but "out here" (including the PacNW portion of the US, most of that's now in place. With the Sinixt of course there's no government article to be made, though there is one for their council or whatever it's called. There was a reserve mentioned in one of the cites I read last night, maybe Dawson, not sure, about a reserve on South Arrow Lake (1902) that now no longer exists; what's described and Sinkalip will probably dispute is that it was about half-Sinixt, half-Shuswap.....another of those anthro sources, maybe Boas, says that the Sinixt originated from intermarriage between the Shuswap and Ktunaxa, but that wouldn't be the first time Boas is in error. It's cites like these that make me wary of relying only on social science 'conclusions'; I realize that makes no difference in WP:RS but think about it....does this author have actual case data to back up that claim? Any surveys? And kinda sweeping and negative as an assumption huh? Only by way of example. I've seen media and academic articles take flying leaps from one paper somewhere by someone taking one thing out of context, expounding on it, coming to a baseless conclusion, and then seeing that become a foundation for whole new lines of even more extemporizing, while often discrediting older sources as unnecessary or "I say this is wrong". There isn't a page of Jean Barman's book, for example, where I didn't gag at some historical gaffes she makes, sometimes three four times a page, some of those become nostrums in media and academic "research". "Social sciences" is a bad term to start with, but even moreso when evidence isn't objective and there is no real "control group" as experimental method requires i.e. when the method used isn't scientific in the slightest; it can seem so because of data analysis now replacing logical thought and moral reasoning as the tools of the liberal "arts", but taking statements like that "pat" as if they were fact irks me; at least here it's quoted as this author saying that, not as if it were actually fact; which I very much doubt it is, like other myths about BC's ethnosocial interpoliticking over the two centuries and so many years since "Europeanization" (a term I intensely dislike, given its former context that didn't mean "white" but people from Germany, Italy etc rather than Britons or Canadians or Yanks).....the new history talks about people in groups and makes categorical nonsense about them way too much, based on one or two person's words, the realities of BC history are about individuals, of whichever group. The Resettlement book by Cole Harris I could quote whole passages out of the rationalization of bias he applies and cowers before if I had one around, that is (I'm in Thailand) and the same goes for Bowering's "Swashbucking" (and it's not) history. The older authors and authors, Boas, Dawson etc at least knew of their own limitations and weren't trying to be preachy and judgmental....but those were different days in academia, that's for sure; but they are held in disdain, even though they are the only period sources.....same with Bancroft, Howay, etc (Scholefield is really literary to read btw E.O.S. Scholefield, partner with F.W. Howay at times; their joint history is a must-have even more than the Akriggs is.Skookum1 (talk) 17:58, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the elaboration. As you are aware, there is less published academic research available on the Sinixt than on many other FN groups, so I find Eileen a valuable source to add to articles because there is a dearth of other materials to work with. But I take your point for sure, and thanks as well for the other examples.

By the way- if you were uncomfortable with using the Pearkes quote in particular I'd be willing to take it out of the article. I live in the region, and happen to agree with her, based on my personal experience, but that doesn't mean it's objectively true. Please let me know. Can't speak for Kootenayers, but from my own life maybe it's the older generation who realize implicitly that names like Chilliwack, Spuzzum, Tsawwassen, Kamloops are native in origin.....Nakusp seems obvious to me. Unless people think it's Ukrainian? [irony/sarcasm] about materials on the Sinixt, there's lots about them in Teit and Boas and Dawson; not up to date and some of their conjecture from the time is wrong, but most isn't conjecture, they're very careful to say when they don't know something or that what they have is only hearsay; I had some links open yesterday before a browser crash, could dig them out of my history maybe if you'd like to see them; some of them off the secwepemc.org site somewhere, can't remember the others just now. Kwami's conversion of the language article to a dialect is very much in tune with what Dawson and Boas were describing as a pan-regional language; another is North Straits Salish where the parent language is obscure or non-existent it's made up of distinct dialects; I believe the same is true of Heiltsuk and Owekeeno in combination or one of the pairings of the so-called Northern Kwakiutl (who are not Kwakiutl, but nor are most people customarily called Kwakiutl.....Skookum1 (talk) 18:32, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

I know I can, and it's nowhere near as hard as Nlaka'pamux that's for sure......there's a Requested Move back to Ktunaxa from Kutenai people, where User:Kwamikagami moved it, with no regard to Canadian English norms and a stated disregard for indigenous preferences, that's underway that could use your input; Talk:Kutenai_people#Requested_move_2 and there's similar on Talk:Lillooet people, Talk:Chilcotin people, Talk:Shuswap people and Thompson people. That changing Skwxwu7mesh to Squamish people has resulted in the Category:Squamish (see the CfD there) is where all these will go unless this nonsense is put to a stop. Whether *you* can is irrelevant. I can pronounce Hànrén with the correct tones, [x] for the h, [ʐ] for the r, and [ɤ] for the e, but I'm not going to go around insisting we move Chinese people there. The relevant question is whether Ktunaxa has an assimilated English pronunciation. I've found one English approximation, "too-NEKS-ə", but I rather doubt it's become assimilated. I came here because Kootenayvolcano lives in the area and knows both Ktunaxa and Sinixt people and, unlike yourself, is sensitive to aboriginal issues. Your endless comparison to the Mandarin usage for "Chinese people" is irrelevant to a discussion about norms in Canadian English, which apply on Canadian English. There IS no in-use alternative to Ktunaxa in Canada.....there aren't people who "know" how to pronounced Mi'kmaq or Gitxsan also, are you going to speedy-moved them also something "more people" know, but you can't provide citations for like this case???? You're a one-man wrecking crew Kwami, given the damage you've done with your unilateral judgments and "fiat speedies" and the time it's taking to fix them. When was the last time you did a constructive edit on any of the pages in question, other than adding IPAs?? Ya, we have a time differential issue; I'm 15 hours ahead of you ;-). Suffice to say that BC Hydro and RD and MoF reps and officials use these terms on a daily basis in English. The pretense given somewhere by you-know-who that ENGVAR only applies to orthography and pronunciation actually applies here, as this is about orthography; he's trying to make it about pronunciation cites, that's irrelevant, as is everything he's saying; but there does need to be a boilerplate template and guidelines page about aboriginal and other non-English names in Canada (e.g. Lac la Hache is officially lower-case 'L', i.e. it's in French, as is the cedilla on Francois Lake, i.e. where that redirects to. This "not English" thing came up on the AfD for Skookum, also, and was shot down in flames, ultimately. Wiki Loves Pride 2014

Hi Kootenayvolcano. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. I saw your name on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Discrimination#Participants listing.

There is a discussion at Template talk:Infobox person#Citizenship suggesting a change of emphasis to a Citizenship entry from the Nationality entry.

The idea is to give more facilitation to Patriotism instead of Nationalism and also to allow more freedom of expression in regards to terminologies used.

Queering Wikipedia 2021 User Group Working Days: May 14–16

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.
