Gila River

Dear Karl, I would like to use your Gila River watershed map as shown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gilarivermap.png for a public survey on river management for a tributary, the Santa Cruz River. I like the simplicity of this map and that it helps respondents see the Santa Cruz trib in context with the larger watershed along with major Arizona cities. I'm not including source info for the images in the survey itself but would recognize your contribution in publications based on survey results.

Hi Kmusser, please update the airport map of San Juan (SJU) if you can. Include only the non-stop destinations (now BA direct one-stop to LGW and Insel one-stop to CUR are gone) because some destinations now marked as direct (like DEN, LAS, MEX, PAP, SEA) are not direct, as they are not same plane service in the flights segments although maintain same flights numbers (totally normal in US airlines and hubs). Only differentiate between "seasonal" and "year-round" destinations. The destinations for the map are: ANU, ATL, AXA, BDL, BOG, BOS, BWI, CCS, CLT, CLE (seasonal), DCA, DFW, DOM, DTW (seasonal), EIS, EWR, FDF, FLL, FRA, IAD, IAH, JAX, JFK, MAZ, MCO, MSP (seasonal), NEV, ORD, PBI, PHL, PTP, PTY, PUJ, SBH, SDQ, STI, STT, STX, SXM, TPA, VIJ, VQS, YYZ. Truckee River Map

Dear Karl,

I would like to ask permission to use the Truckee River Map shown at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Truckeerivermap.png. I really like this map above others because it is simple and clear.

It will be for publication in Climatic Change Journal for an article on climate change vulnerability in this basin. I need a higher resolution map (900 dpi) than the one shown on the webpage. The higher resolution is needed for good printing quality. We will credit you for the map.

We will credit you for the map in the manuscript. The manuscript has been accepted for publication and we just need permission for this map.

Dear Sir,

Perhaps you could consider making South Sudan a majority country in the map above and update it on Wikicommons based on this message I posted here from Pew research forum. (there are 2 Pew sources) If they say that South Sudan in 2010 was roughly 60% Christian, almost 33% African tribal religions by population and 6% Muslim, I would tend to think this might make it qualify as a majority Christian country in the map above--given the uncertainties of newer reliable data for this poor state. Pew is a credible and reliable polling organization--they do surveys by actually doing live interviews and even speaking to different members of a household (I learned this from PBS news coverage of their polling during the presidential campaign last year) and I think they got most, if not all of the US states predicted right in the 2012 US presidential election in your country. Unfortunately, South Sudan is so new and poor--they couldn't participate in the London Olympics--that getting official government statistics will be some years off. Thanks, will do. The dotted portion is the part that's normally dry - some maps had the river disappear entirely south of Karaj and than reappear near its mouth at Namak. Anglican communion

Dear Mr. Musser,

Thank you for your correction for the Church of the Brethren map. As you might know, I have also been trying to have my concerns with the Anglican Communion map addressed. Actually, I would like to edit the map myself but am unsure how. I have been able to make the changes I feel are warranted by clicking on the image of the map and using inspect element, but when I click save on there my changes are not saved. I tried to save it to my computer, but am only able to save as document.

Could you please direct me to a resource where I could learn how to edit these maps myself, particularly, how to change the colors of countries and states, so I can stop bothering others with my requests and make the changes I feel are necessary by myself?

You need to download the image to your computer and then use graphics software to edit it and then upload the new version. For SVG format images I recommend using Inkscape, it's a free download. Most of the maps are designed so that once in Inkscape you can select a country and then pick a color and it will just fill in - if having trouble selecting a country they might be all grouped together, look for the ungroup option. Sorry I didn't have time to do that one, the Brethren map was a quick fix, but the Anglican map edits looked quite a bit more complicated. Kmusser (talk) 19:53, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

This is my first attempt at changing the map to meet my concerns. It is the first of these maps that I have made, so please be patient WP:NEWBIE. I removed the Porvoo and Utrecht communions so I could add the the Diocese of Gibraltar European areas. We should proably create a Europe specific map for those (as they are only present on one Continent, and that map could be used for other purposes without including the worldwide AC). This map could also be tweaked in a few areas I couldn't color in very well, such as the countries represented by small dots. The color scheme might be made more appropriate. I just created this map for the European churches of the Union of Utrecht and Porvoo Communion. It has some problems too,. particularly with Denmark, which I realize now has become a full member of the PC despite what the previous map said, and the license which I think I may have done wrong. Very promising, I think splitting to two separate maps is a good move. Some tips to get them to look a little better. For the world map I'd try it again using File:BlankMap-World6.svg as the base instead of the existing Anglican map, that will get the South Sudan border fixed and you won't have any left over errors from the old map. Are you using Inkscape? If so you can get it to color without leaving outlines around the countries, avoid the paint bucket tool, instead select the country (using the arrow tool) and then click on a color (colors located in a bar near the bottom of the screen), or you can double click where it says fill near the bottom to have even more color choices. For the Europe map the map you used as a base is in some weird map projection, try using File:Blank_map_of_Europe_cropped.svg as a base instead. For the world map, did you mean to save it in a PNG format? PNG works fine on Wikipedia, but if you leave it as SVG it will make future editing easier. Kmusser (talk) 01:32, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

I created the new Utrecht on using the blank map of Europe you gave me and normal windows Paint, which turns out well for this smaller regional map, but not much for the larger world map. I cannot get the hang of Inkster. The Utrecht map looks good to go, nice job. The arrow tool it the top one on the left toolbar, labeled "select and transform objects". In the SVG format files you can use it to select a country, if you convert to PNG format though you lose that ability. Kmusser (talk) 18:57, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

You wouldn't happen to have a world map with the English-Scots and English-Welsh border do you? Those are each two distinct churches within the Anglican Communion that the new map would need to show (and its not just an academic point, as there is a long and interesting history of the inter-relationships of those churches.) Also I need a map that that has the dots for smaller jurisdictions like Gibralter, Falklands, Bermuda, Guam etc. Do you know of a blank map like this that I could use as a base?--Bellerophon5685 (talk) 00:46, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Ok, I didn't find a blank one, but you could potentially use File:World Map FIFA.svg as a base. Both that and File:BlankMap-World6.svg do have circles for the small countries, but they are hidden by default. Check out the documentation for using that file which I should have sent you before, it has how to turn on the circles and also how to edit it using a text editor which might be easier for you if you're having trouble with Inkscape. Excellent! I think the colors are fine. Regarding Portugal and Spain - not conveniently, ideally they could be striped with both colors, but Inkscape can't do that and doing it by hand is difficult to get it to look good. I'd leave it as is and just put a note in the description to that effect. Also, for the description, if you know or can look up the HTML or hex codes to the colors you used it's possible to include them in the description is well (check out the description of that FIFA map as an example), not a must have, but is nice. I can probably add that for you when I get some free time, but it's good to use as is. Kmusser (talk) 18:32, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hydronymy

Hallo, I am interested in hydronymy as it looks the language of prehistoric Europe is reflected therein. I left a message on the wikiproject rivers talkpage, just looking for editors with similar interests to exchange information. I have discovered the so called old european hydronymy is not limited to Europe but has many correspondences in Iran, India and furhter away so I think this disproves the current scholarly etymological interpretations. Kmusser; I greatly enjoy your work, and especially like using your file File:Carolinacolony.png. That being said, I was hoping you could discuss with me your sources for the contention that Carolina was divided into North and South provinces in 1729, versus what is usually cited in reliable sources as being a deal that was worked out in 1710 and finalized in 1712 by the proprietors. The 1729 date is the date at which point North Carolina became a Royal colony, but South Carolina was a Royal colony starting in 1720. Currently, the article states that 1712 was the split date, which is supported by reliable sources:

• Excerpt from the North Carolina Manual, 2007-2008 edition
• Milton Ready's Tar Heel State, p. 43
• Encyclopedia Britannica (11th Ed), p. 776 - states that NC was separated in government from SC in 1712, but the boundary wasn't formally divided until 1729. That may be a source of some confusion, but the boundary (in my mind) was merely an act confirming the earlier separation; your map itself notes that the boundary was unclear until 1771; perhaps another note stating "Boundary divided in 1729" would be most accurate?

I noticed you were the last one to do File:113th United States Congress Senators.svg, so I figured I'd mention this: On the map, there's some trapezoidal purple artifact in the Gulf of Mexico, possibly related to Louisiana or Florida. It seems to have been there since the original 2012 upload, but since you just edited it, maybe you can fix it since you already have the work file. --Closeapple (talk) 23:34, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

Use of Gambia Map for Cambridge University Press textbook

Hello Karl,

I am a co-author of an upcoming textbook through Cambridge University Press, entitled "Coastal Wetlands of the World" and in our African chapter, we would like to use your map on the Gambia river-- http://www.rivergambiaexpedition.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/route-map-river-gambia.png. If there are other versions of maps along the Gambia, that would be great to have as well. We will need high-resolution (300 dpi) images, and this book will be printed in both text and electronic format. Proper citations and acknowledgements will be given with the figure.

Monocacy River watershed

Great graphic (Monocacy River watershed, see that talkpage ,duplicate message) but it is missing Glade creek ... this creek runs to the west of Israel creek. The creek runs up thru Walkersville, MD. and ends just two miles short of Woodsboro, MD. I propose modifying the graphic to add that ... See this link for a discussion of Glade creek as part OF the upper Monocacy river watershed... also would like to identify Tuscarora Creek (Monocacy River) ... Thanks again for all your work... Glade creek is a much smaller creek than the other ones I have labeled, if I added every stream that size the map would become unreadable. I don't think there's anything special about Glade Creek that warrants highlighting it more than the other small streams in the watershed. The map isn't meant to be comprehensive, but to illustrate the Monocacy River article. If Glade Creek gets an article maybe I'll make it it's own map. Kmusser (talk) 14:58, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Kansas River

Dear Karl, I would like to use your Kansas River watershed map shown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kansasrivermap.png on an educational project for Friends of the Kaw, Inc. Friends of the Kaw is a grassroots environmental nonprofit that works to protect and preserve the Kansas River for all generations (www.kansasriver.org). We need your map to use on a sign we are putting up near one of our boat ramps. The sign is part of an educational rain garden that talks about practices to reduce stormwater runoff. We need the original file, so that it is high enough quality to use in our graphic design. Trails map - Toro Negro State Forest

Hello Kmusser:

You might remember me from the Maps of the 31 barrios of Ponce that you created some 3 years ago and then I filled in individualally in red color (for example Vayas). I have another request below.

Could you make a Trails Map for THIS article? The forest has 10 official trails, plus 1 additional one that is not included in their maps (Ref: Toro_Negro_State_Forest#Trails). Their trail map is at THIS place. However, it is a map that has some trails partially blocked with pictures of landmarks. In addition it is not a shaded relieve map (like this one HERE is) which would be useful since the area is highly mountainous. Furthermore the rivers and creek are poorly labeled. And finally, it is humongous and doesn't print on 1 single sheet or paper nor does it display in one single screenfull.

A good soul posted a trail map of the forest (See it HERE) but it too has its limitations. For example it's black and white, it seems to be more of a draft than a finished map, and it is not oriented towards the North, which -- I have noticed -- is somewhat of a default in cartography. This second map appears to have been drawn by a Toro Negro Forest Officer or employee himself: on the lower right side, though cut off, it seems to have the signature of the government official who authorized its publishing (or possibly who created it). It is quite confusing because of its orientation: It has a West-East orientation, not the conventional South-North one.

THIS tours company, called Puerto Rico daily Trips, realized all of these shortcomings ("Don’t believe all the trails on the map that they hand out at the DRNA office!" - read about it HERE) and created their own map (see it HERE, halfway down their page and just below the heading "Waterfalls".) Their map is a nice improvement over the government maps, but it too has some serious shortcomings: (1) it's copyrighted, so we can't use it in WP, (2) has no shaded relieve, (3) the trail labels do not follow the contour of the trails, and (4) it has a mislabeled road (Route 546, should read 564).

Is what I am asking possible?

I don't think you can get the elevation background that you want - the layer you see commonly used isn't detailed enough for that small of an area. You can get a better map though, I think the approach I'd take would be to start with the official map, crop it down to just the center portion and incorporate some of the improvements of the tour company map, like deleting out the closed trails and the pictures. Using the official map as a base could still run afoul of copyright though (U.S. Federal Government stuff is public domain, but that doesn't extend to state/commonwealth governments). What's up with trail 5 though? It's completely different on all three maps. Anyway, I've been too busy to do much map making lately, but I'll take a shot at it if I get some free time. I am glad to hear what I am asking is possible from the technical point of view - I was afraid I might need to present you with datasets and what have you! As for Trail #5, I would go with the PR Daily Trips route for that trail. Somehow I trust it more. In addition it shows the water filtration plant, increasing my trust level on that map. IAE, the non-color map "Ranger's Office" doesn't show Trail #5 entirely - seems to be cut off. As such, it seems possible that Trail #5 may have followed the same route in that Ranger's map as it does in the PR Daily Tours map. Also, I don't know if it matters, but I have access to trails.com where USGS topo maps of the area are available. Perhaps that would help you for the elevation background I was hoping for - the trails are not marked in those USGS maps but the elevations are. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 22:24, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

See my data sources page, U.S. data all comes from the National Atlas, Canadian data I used the now outdated DCW, I recommend using Natural Earth instead, and then the SRTM for the elevation. The labeling and coloration I did in Photoshop rather than ArcGIS. Kmusser (talk) 02:21, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
