Corrections on MNL map[edit]

Hey Kmusser, once again I thank you for making the map on MNL. But there seems to have a few corrections.

  • Cuyo (CYU) is not on the map, South East Asian Airlines has a non-stop flight to CYU every Monday on DG745.
  • El Nido (ENI) should be marked as a direct flight, South East Asian Airlines operates only direct flights to ENI every Sunday on DG745 (MNL-USU-ENI), Wednesday on DG463 (MNL-USU-ENI), and Friday on DG741 (MNL-USU-ENI).
  • Jeju (CJU) is not in the map, Philippine Airlines has a seasonal non-stop flight to CJU every Wednesday and Saturday on PR4860.
  • Las Vegas (LAS) should be listed as a direct flight, Philippine Airlines operates only direct flights to LAS every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday on PR106 (MNL-YVR-LAS).
  • Nanning (NNG) is not in the map, Shenzhen Airlines has a non-stop flight to NNG every Wednesday.
  • Yap (YAP) is not in the map, Continental Micronesia has a direct flight to YAP every Wednesday on C0892 (MNL-ROR-YAP-GUM).

I would be very thankful if you could change it. Thanks! -chris^_^ (talk) 07:41, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to confirm all of those except the MNL-CJU flight, which appears to be a charter. I should have a updated map on Tuesday. Kmusser (talk) 16:20, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How about a Mesoamerican river??[edit]

Karl, I have long been a fan of your maps of US rivers and I appreciate your tending the Maps request page. Please keep up the good work.

I am working on an article on the Epi-Olmec culture, which was centered around the Papaloapan River in the present-day Mexican state of Veracruz. It would be nice to use a map of the Papaloapan basin as a basis for a map showing the Epi-Olmec sites. Unfortunately, I do not know of any maps that I could use which show the river basin. Would you know where to find such a map?? Let me know, and thanks, Madman (talk) 14:31, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can make one for the basin, I already have data for Mexico downloaded, will get to it sometime next week. If you have or find an existing map of the sites you want I could overlay those to get them onto the same map. Kmusser (talk) 14:43, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy response!! I do have some archaeological sites that I would like to add to the map, but I don't have all my ducks in a row yet. Why don't you create the Papaloapan river map and we can use it in the Papaloapan River article - there's one in the Spanish, Dutch, and Bulgarian Wikipedias, too -- and I can build on that for a map showing the sites of the Epi-Olmec culture?
Thanks, Karl!! Madman (talk) 15:03, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done, I made it a little more detailed than my usual river maps, I hope that's a good thing.Kmusser (talk) 17:31, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the map. I was a bit surprised that the Papaloapan does not have any tributaries on the Left Bank (as facing downstream. Very interesting.
As mentioned, I will be using the map as a basis for a map of the Epi-Olmec culture. The article is nearly done, just not uploaded. Thanks again, Madman (talk) 23:35, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That area is all swamp, without a clear drainage pattern, I thought about adding swamp on there and still might, the area between the San Juan and the Tesechoacan is all swamp as well. If you need any help adopting it for Epi-Olmec just let me know. Kmusser (talk) 01:38, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Swamp, eh? Swamps would be interesting. What would you use to represent the swamp, the typical swamp icon?
I want to make an SVG map of the area, similar to my other maps, in particular Olmec Heartland Overview. You could help me by uploading (at least temporarily, until I could download it) a text-less map. Contour outlines would also help but are in no way critical. Thanks again, Madman (talk) 03:55, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure I'll upload a text-less version at max resolution for you to vectorize this evening. Kmusser (talk) 14:39, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's at Image:Papaloapanrivermap highres.png, sadly my elevation data is too fuzzy to get decent contour lines.Kmusser (talk) 01:08, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your map. I used the shorelines and the river(s) to create this map of the Epi-Olmec culture.
I also took a look at your gallery, and I was astounded. That body of work calls for nothing less than the Tireless Contributor Barnstar, which "may be awarded to especially tireless Wikipedians who contribute an especially large body of work without sacrificing quality." Madman (talk) 22:08, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
For a consistently high-quality and "especially large body of work" (in this case, wonderful maps), I am pleased to award Kmusser the Tireless Contributor Barnstar. Madman (talk) 22:08, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest. Notwithstanding my disclaimer, I'm making slow and painful progress towards making a usable map, but I'll drop it at once if someone more skilled (as you obviously are) is taking it on. However, I'm assuming from other entries on your talk page that you mostly deal with U.S. topics. All the best. --Old Moonraker (talk) 19:19, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was just categorizing requests, I'm not planning to do that one anytime in the near future. Kmusser (talk) 19:23, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again. Back to Inkscape it is!--Old Moonraker (talk) 19:35, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Watershed maps[edit]

Your maps are really fabulous. I've long wanted to see a map that clearly illustrates all the divides/watersheds of the US, but have never been able to locate one. It looks like your individual river maps contain most of the info for such a master map, and I'm curious if you've ever put it all together. Craig Butz (talk) 05:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Karl. I am the editor of a newsletter in Arizona, and our next issue is about the Colorado River. I love the map you put together of the river, and I was wondering if you have any that are just the river in Arizona. The image posted on the web is too low resolution to crop to just AZ. Thanks! Earthquake map[edit]

Hi Kmusser. Could you make the earthquake map on the site here? There needs to be a map for the Anahim hotspot seismology as it's an area of much interest from volcanologists and seismologists (it's perhaps the first recorded volcanic activity in Canada since the 19th century). Black Tusk 20:56, 6 Febuary 2008 (UTC)

Not really - I can't make anything much more detailed than Image:Anahim Volcanic Belt-en.svg. I mean I could crop that image down to just the hot spot, but I don't think that really gains you much. The sources for that more detailed map are all copyrighted. I'd just put a note next to that reference that it includes a more detailed map.Kmusser (talk) 19:15, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I haven't been replying to you. So what kind of maps are you able to do? Just want to know because then I know what kind of maps you can make. Is there anything that might be important or useful in the Anahim hotspot article? By the way the old discussion about the Rainbow, Ilgachuz and Itcha Ranges is on the Rainbow Range talk page if you have any ideas about making maps for those three ranges. I understand what you said before about the three ranges being on the Anahim Volcanic Belt map, but that map is for volcanology and not the ranges themselves (i.e. volcano vs. mountain range). Black Tusk 19:23, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For geologic features it's mostly a matter of scale, the elevation data I have access to only has a data point once every km, so the feature I'm mapping should be at least 100 km or so long/wide for the map to show more than a blur. While not a map per se, you might be able to find satellite images that might do the same job. Anything from USGS would be copyright-free, I haven't used it but http://glovis.usgs.gov/ looks like it might be able to generate something decent for that area. Kmusser (talk) 03:42, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What about if the geologic feature is underwater or under the surface? i.e. the Temagami Magmatic Anomaly. See here and here. Black Tusk 18:23, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I do have bathymetry, but at an even lower resolution - I could do a locater map just to show where it is on the earth (similar to Image:Marianatrenchmap.png, but again wouldn't offer much detail - to give you an idea the bathymetry was too blurry to use for a map covering the North Sea (Image:Silverpitlocatormap.png). I don't know of a source of public domain magnetic data the would allow me to re-create that Natural Resources Canada map - so yeah, best I could probably do there is a dot locater map.
I guess that isn't the best then. Can you make diagrams? Just an idea for the Anahim hotspot (i.e. how it works etc). Black Tusk 20:23, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A diagram would be cool - for that you should ask one of our Inkscape/SVG gurus as SVG is a much better format for diagrams and I haven't gotten the hang of using Inkscape yet - I'd try some of the folks listed at Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Wikigraphist_abilities. Kmusser (talk) 02:30, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you could try some of the folks. There's a diagram for the Anahim hotspot here, but perhaps it could be more detailed. Black Tusk 07:12, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Columbia[edit]

Welcome back - saw what you are now working on (in your User page). Columbia River is a recent GA and has a group of editors working on it together very nicely. I notice it does not have one of your beautiful watershed maps (hint, hint). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:06, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I never did the Columbia because I thought the map that it did have was actually nicer than mine, I could do one though. Kmusser (talk) 14:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe this is something that should discussed on the Columbia River talk page then. I like the satellite photo / map Image:Roll On Columbia.png full size but it is not very clear at lower resolutions and does not show political boundaries. I like the watershed and dam map Image:Columbia.png but it does not label most of the tributaries. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:40, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done, also both the reference in the article and Topozone show the source being Thompson Pond rather than Hunns Lake. There's a Hunns Lake Creek that connects the latter to the Wappinger.Kmusser (talk) 16:29, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Watershed map[edit]

Hi. I've been admiring your work for several months, and today I'm writing to ask for help. I'm working on a creek article Johnson Creek (Willamette River) that I'd like to nominate for FA. It was promoted to GA yesterday by User:Ruhrfisch, whose Larrys Creek was my main model. I'm able to make rudimentary linear maps using Paint.net, but I have no clear idea of how to make a watershed map. Would you consider making one for me or advising me how to go about making my own? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Finetooth (talk) 22:20, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see if I can make one - most watershed maps are made using GIS software and data from the National Atlas. For bigger rivers you can get a decent map off the National Atlas web application, but smaller rivers are a little trickier (especially now that topozone is gone, that was my main reference). Kmusser (talk) 13:05, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if it's any help to look at topo maps done elsewhere, but Oregon Trout has published a nice one that I've linked to here. Finetooth (talk) 17:00, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
With a lot of good advice from Ruhrfisch and some tips from the map project page, I was able to make my first watershed map today, of Johnson Creek. I thought I'd better tell you right away lest you spend time making another one. The new dude is Image:Johnson Creek watershed map.png. Any advice on improvements would be welcome. The colors on the Johnson Creek course map I made a couple of weeks ago now look garish, and I plan to change them. Finetooth (talk) 04:00, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very nice, the only thing I'd try to add if you have it available is the Portland city limits just to add another reference point. Kmusser (talk) 12:23, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<outdent> Thank you for both sets of advice. I did not know that dark blue italics are standard for bodies of water, and I will make this further change to the map and also flip the city names to non-italic. I appreciate this help. I'd like to get as good at this as I possibly can. Finetooth (talk) 19:19, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to say thank you again for your help on this article, which made FA this evening. The watershed map was fun, and I learned a lot while doing it. The text for watery things is in dark blue italics in the latest version, and the text for cities has been flipped to regular instead of italics. Ruhrfisch added a dot map, which improved things further, and User:Northwesterner1 added a photo map that knocked my socks off. With a map from the Commons that shows where the Clackamas tribe lived, we ended up with four maps. Finetooth (talk) 02:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BNA Map[edit]

Greetings! I was going to put together a destinations map for Nashville International and I was wondering if you could give me some advice and/or base maps to work with. First time at doing such a thing... nf utvol (talk) 18:51, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some details on how I make them are in User:Kmusser/Sources#Airports, but that's probably more than you'd need for Nashville - you should be able to just draw in the destinations using regular graphics software if you can find a suitable basemap. I just took a look and I didn't see a good North America basemap in commons, but I think I already have one somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and get back to you. Kmusser (talk) 17:26, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded what should be a suitable basemap at Image:Blanknorthamericamap.png, I made it big enough to use for anything in North America, just crop out the part that you need. Kmusser (talk) 15:29, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Delaware Valley Map[edit]

Hey Kmusser,

Thanks for the map. Generally, I am very impressed with the map. However, allow me to make a few suggestions. First, you extend the map all the way to New York and into Maryland. I don't have a problem with that per se, but if you're going to include cities, I think you should include New York City and Baltimore, MD. Otherwise, perhaps you should compress the map a little bit at the top and bottom. Second, I am a little confused about your designations of Berks County, PA and Mercer County, NJ. Berks is part of the Delaware Valley and Mercer is part of New York. I don't agree that there should be divided shading because they can be misleading. Further, if you must do the divided shadings, you must also use gray for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties, NJ. My recommendation is to only highlight the areas that are officially part of the Delaware Valley. Then, include other major cities such as New York and Baltimore, along with Trenton and Atlantic City. The current configuration is confusing and does not reflect current census designations. That said, I like the picture and its quality. If you could just make those slight changes, I think the article will be better off. Thanks for your contributions. They are appreciated. Jps57 (talk) 00:31, 2 May 2008 (UTC)jps57[reply]

The map is entirely based on the Census definitions, the cities shown are just those the Census designated as "central cities" of the MSA. The shading indicates the most recent changes to the MSA definition (Mercer being dropped in 2000 and Berks being added in 2005). I think it's helpful to show that the MSA definition isn't a constant. There is a description on the image page explaining that, part of that could be added to the article if you think it would help. I could zoom in a bit, but I was worried about the user being able to tell where in the country they were looking, though I could add a locater map inset to show where in the U.S. it is. Kmusser (talk) 14:05, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello KM--

Could you look at the map on this article? I could not find good PD maps so I assembled this one from the sources indicated at its Commons page. I had originally intended to do separate maps for each trail, with points of interest labeled, but given the length of the trails and the necessary scale, went with one map in the format shown, with links to waypoints. (I used Ruhrfisch's maps showing modern political boundaries, both for user orientation and my own, in drawing the trails and minor watercourses. I will be uploading a new version revised to add the two-letter postal code for the states and provinces.) It has been suggested that I have maps for each segment; I'm not sure that is advisable for the reasons above, and also because it could make the page too busy. I'm open to persuasion otherwise. As there are reasonable opinions on both sides, I'd appreciate an opinion from you as well. Thanks. Kablammo (talk) 14:27, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that looks pretty good as it is. I definitely think having them all on one map is a good thing, it makes it easier to compare the trails. Kmusser (talk) 14:53, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maritime provinces of Canada[edit]

Howdy. I'd like to start making maps of the rivers of each of the Maritime provinces, however all the existing maps are too high of a scale, thus they don't have the detail I'm looking for (such as all the capes and bays). I like the gray and white blank maps that exist, and I'd like to use something similar, however I need the template to start. If you know of any maps that exist - specifically of the 3 provinces in gray and white - could you let me know? Otherwise, if you have the time, could you make one? I'd carry on with each of the rivers there. Thanks for any advice/input you have! Andrew647 07:06, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't used a reference yet, but I'm thinking of GIS or something similar. I downloaded Inkscape, but I'm really unfamiliar with graphics programs, so I'm going to use trial and error and see how I can do. Thanks for the advice! Andrew647 01:03, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I tried my hand at one here using data from the Topographic Atlas of Canada, sourced on the image page. What do you think? Andrew647 20:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for the map, however I would like to see two corrections: Egiin should be change to Eg (in analogy to Ideriin gol -> Ider), and Dleger should be changed to Delgermörön as this is IMO the proper name of the river (usually, of course, xxx "mörön" is just one mongolian equivalent to xxx "river", this case is somewhat special). A little detail[edit]

I just noticed a typo on Image:Columbiarivermap.png -- the city of Corvallis, south of Portland, missing the R. No rush on fixing, just thought you'd want to know! Also, I don't know much about your process for making the maps, but have you considered using the SVG format, so that labels and such don't pixellate if the image is enlarged? -Pete (talk) 00:18, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doh, I even used to live there so I have no excuse, anyway is fixed now. For SVG, I haven't figured out how to make SVG makes that don't look truly awful, but I went ahead and uploaded an SVG version of the same map if you want to use it (same file name, but with the .svg). Wales Locator Map[edit]

Hi Kmusser, wow that was quick. I hadn't realised the Image:Europe_location_WAL.png was there. If you could try adding a zoom inset, that would be great. Thanks very much. :) Daicaregos (talk) 16:20, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've got to say - that's the best looking map on Wikipedia. Outstanding work. Thank you. I've inserted it onto the Wales page. We'll wait for the reaction. Thanks, Daicaregos (talk) 20:08, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland Map[edit]

Maybe you can make one like the wales on and put it on the Scotland article --89.240.246.101 (talk) 22:20, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kmusser
I quite like the new Wales map, but can I ask that you discuss on Talk:Scotland before creating it, in case it's controversial and your time is wasted? There's been a great deal of sock puppetry and vandalism on Scotland and related articles recently, and I fear that you may be being drawn into the collateral damage...
Cheers,  This flag once was red  23:42, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That one was very easy to make since it was really just a crop of the existing map, I can go ahead and do one for Scotland and let you duke it out over whether you use it or not :-) Kmusser (talk) 12:57, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done, new map at Image:Europe location SCO2.png. Kmusser (talk) 17:39, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth I also uploaded a Image:Europe location ENG2.png and Image:Europe location N-IRL2.png while I was at it. Kmusser (talk) 19:07, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cross Timbers[edit]

Thanks for the map! Why was your map deleted in the first place? Also, I have been wondering for a while now how to use/create/manipulate PNG maps. What program do you use, how do you draw the shapes, etc? Thanks for any help you can give. --NetherlandishYankee (talk) 16:38, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, good to know. But like how did you copy the EPA outline of the Cross Timbers so precisely? Surely you didn't draw that by hand, did you? --NetherlandishYankee (talk) 17:00, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eruption timeline remake[edit]

Hi Kmusser. There's a discussion about remaking the Cascade volcano eruption timeline here to include the Canadian Cascade volcanoes that have erupted in the past 4,000 years. If you would like to remake the image, see Talk:Cascade Volcanoes for the discussion and more infomation. Black Tusk (talk) 16:50, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you reply to me? This is something that has to be done because not all of the arc is in the United States. Like Skookum1 said, so many other data-sets the USGS and various Canadian data services end at the border, which is a tragedy in scientific terms and just frustrating for researchers. If you want to ignore me this is certainly not the best place to make map requests. Black Tusk (talk) 23:49, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry, got distracted by the Columbia Dams discussion below - yes I can do that, it probably won't be especially soon though, I want to finish the Columbia map first and I don't have much free time to devote to wiki in the next few weeks. Kmusser (talk) 09:56, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dam those maps[edit]

Hi Kmusser, wrt Image:Columbia dams map.png, for the purposes of the Columbia River article, if I gave you the appropriate data, could you add divide lines and text to show the adjoining watersheds? The "Watershed" section of the article has a good text description, but a visual image will make it so much more understandable. I would propose marking up a version and passing it back to you for professional attention.

Fair warning - I have wild ideas about cleaning up the map for the river article and adding a clickable overlay for the numbered dams, etc. which I would do myself based on your originals (if I had to ;). But one thing at a time...

Thanks! Franamax (talk) 09:18, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have other watershed boundaries, that would be pretty easy to add. Which ones were you thinking should be shown? Kmusser (talk) 13:15, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Going around the circle, Fraser River basin, Peace River (Canada) basin (part of the Mackenzie basin), Saskatchewan River basin, Missouri River basin, Green River (Utah) (part of the Colorado basin), Great Basin are the big ones. To the southwest, it gets a little messy, I see the Klamath River and Puget Sound basin in the article. They might not need to be there, it's the continental-sweep adjoining basins that are more of interest I think. Franamax (talk) 18:34, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Basins added in - Peace River basin doesn't quite reach the map extent I'm using.Kmusser (talk) 18:55, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks much! It looks great.
On the wild idea - if I wanted to have a shot at cleaning off the unlabelled dams, could I just use the Commons version, or do you have a master copy you create the PNG from? Franamax (talk) 22:14, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The original for this one is in Adobe Illustrator, if you have that or something that'll read AI files you're welcome to it.Kmusser (talk) 23:39, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've sent you an email so you can send an attachment. Thanks! Franamax (talk)

Siberia[edit]

For Siberian River Routes I stole some of your maps. They need some place names and tributaries, but I have no idea how to fix them. Any suggestions? Benjamin Trovato (talk) 04:23, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should be able to add new text to the existing maps in any graphics software - but I could also combine them into a single map that is more specific to the article, it'll be a little while before I get to it, but that would probably be a better long-term solution. Kmusser (talk) 05:52, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, good. You got Forsyth’s maps almost perfectly. If you want to keep going:

1. The Vakh starts from the Ob half way between the Ket and Ob-Irtysh junction, goes straight west to a portage (mark as ‘P’) south of the Taz (no connection) and then on a tributary east southeast to the Yenisei. (remove Narym name to make room). 2. The Vilyui is T-shaped. Where it starts north(going upstream), at start of the north, west, north twist, tributary (Chona, no room for label) goes south parallel to the Yenisei at least half-way to the Tunguska-Lena notch. Portage was about the width of Baikal south of the T. 3. Route was straight east from Ulan-Ude. Maybe make the whole thing as dashes since it was overland and the Chinese kept it blocked for a long time.

OTHER: Red dots for towns don’t show up well on my screen. Maybe something better. Maybe a line of Vs for the Urals for those who don’t know. Mark cross routes: Ob to Ob Gulf, Yenisei between Turukhansk and Yeniseisk, Tunguska all the way up, Lena to the Arctic (they did go that way). Move Okhotsk label out to the ocean (makes more room and it’s a seaport). The northeast corner looks lonely. Maybe stick in Kolyma and Anadyr, or whatever you’ve got and looks good. I will probably fill in the area when I get some more books.

IS THERE an index to wiki commons images where I can look for stuff? If you like maps, look at Great Lakes Depression, external link, home button. Good stuffBenjamin Trovato (talk) 04:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good stuff. Thanks. Map loaded to Siberian River Routes Benjamin Trovato (talk) 03:50, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MAP CHANGE: Thanks for your suggestions. I just got 3 more books. I think marking east of Ust-Ude will have to be deleted since W Bruce Lincoln book has a different story, but I need to cross all 4 books before I can get a complete list of changes.Benjamin Trovato (talk) 23:51, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, just keep me posted and when you're done and I'll try and do all the changes at once. Kmusser (talk) 14:13, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gavin.collins RFC/U[edit]

Hello. A request for comment on user conduct has recently been filed regarding Gavin.collins. Since you had endorsed at least one summary in the prior Request for Comment, I thought that you would want to know. You can see the RFC/U here. Thank you. BOZ (talk) 00:45, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map request[edit]

Hi Karl, could you please make a river map for the Cape Fear River similar to the one you made for the Pee Dee River? Thanks in advance, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 18:08, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, will do. Kmusser (talk) 14:58, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting it done. It is a great improvement. Dincher (talk) 20:23, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thank you very much! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:07, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you convert shapefiles into vector images?[edit]

I was told that you and one other person might be able to do this. I made this kind of request at the village pump here. If you can, could you please help out? Äþelwulf Talk to me. 04:00, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, my experiments in trying to do that have generally resulting in stuff that looks awful. Shapefile is a vector format so it should be easy, but ESRI' internal convert to SVG process is very buggy and usually only results in part of the file being converted. It's also possible to output ESRI files as postscript which at least gets the linework out of the shapefile format. I'll pull down the shapefiles you mentioned and see what I can do with them. Kmusser (talk) 13:56, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Progess - if I export the shapefiles by themselves, without trying to turn it into a finished map first, it works ok. Check out [1] and [2]. This was done in ArcGIS doing a simple Save As SVG - strangely Oregon put the 2 shapefiles up in two different map projections so I changed the Senate file's projection to match the House. Kmusser (talk) 14:42, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, those are just wonderful. Thank you. Are you willing to release them under a free license so I can upload them to the Commons? Äþelwulf Talk to me. 08:05, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, is there a way you can make the file sizes much smaller? The county maps for Oregon, somewhat comparable in detail, are not nearly a megabyte large. One problem I see in the source code is there's a lot of unnecessary white space. The coordinates are broken up into lines with a space in between the lines. Also, there are superfluous objects in both files. In the Senate map, for example, path2693 seems to form the body of the district in the far southwestern corner of the state, while path2695 and path2697 seem to make the border, but in two parts. Just giving path2693 a stroke eliminates the need for the other two objects, but this seems to be the pattern in both files for all the geographically large districts. What was the Oregon government thinking? Äþelwulf Talk to me. 08:35, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, consider them public domain (or more correctly whatever license the State of Oregon uses), since all I did was change the file format I don't claim any rights to them. As for fixing them up further you really need an Inkscape guru - it's possible some of the junk in the file was introduced by ArcGIS, but I don't really know SVG well enough to fix it up properly - the graphics lab could probably help with that.
