Hello, Kieronoldham. I was going to revert your edit here, but I figured I would ask you for clarification first. Your edit summary states, "(P.277 of Sullivan & Maiken book states 21 months to include time served from Sept. 68 evaluation to Dec. 68 conviction.)", yet your actual edit conveys that he served only 18 months, not the 21 months acknowledged in your summary. The 3 cited sources for that sentence give conflicting information regarding the actual time he spent incarcerated, so I am curious as to why you made this edit. I have made many edits to populate the Gacy article as you possibly know and some earlier edits in particular I believe, with retrospect, I should have asked for consensus before making. As for the edit in question I firstly noted that the previous wording (granted parole with 12 months' probation on June 18, 1970 after serving either 21 months or 18 months of his 10-year sentence) was giving an obvious impression of uncertainty given some dates and this sentence had also been left upon this article for months with no-one rectifying this confusion.

P. 277 of the Sullivan & Maiken book (the most accurate book written on the Gacy murders in my opinion) states that Gacy was released from jail with 12 months' parole on 6/18/1970 (6/18/1970 being precisely a 1 year calendar date prior to his discharge from parole) after 'twenty-one months in jail'. From what I have read in the books on Gacy (including the Linedecker one which is used as a ref. and could hark to the bottom of page 46 or a quote at the top of p.47 for 18 months' time served as a source), the 21 months as time served for a source should include the time served from September of 1968 when he underwent a psychiatric evaluation - willingly - to the time Peter Van Metre sentenced him in December of that year. Page 277 of the Sulivan book harks to his adaptation having served 21 months, but this includes the 3 months' incarceration from September of 68. I will confess to not having read the Foreman source given, but the material I have upon Gacy, including the two books mentioned as sources, indicate 18 months is correct and not 21.

Edit summaries

Okay, glad we got that sorted out. I really did not mean the (If that's too confusing...) to be obnoxious, but I can see how it could be taken that way. I often say more or less the same thing when the topic of who-vs-whom comes up; there's a way to figure out whether "whom" is correct in a given sentence, but many people, even otherwise good English speakers and writers, find it confusing and unhelpful, so I always advise, 'if you don't know whether it should be "who" or "whom", just use who.' Because so few people nowadays understand when to use "whom", "who" is now considered 'acceptable' where "whom" would be more correct... but the reverse is not true, and so most who/whom corrections are of hypercorrection errors — i.e., using "whom" where only "who" is correct. Unfortunately many people seem to think that "whom" is just the fancy way of saying "who" and so replace all instances of "who" with "whom"... which only leads too even more people jumping to the same mistaken conclusion. I much prefer preventing common errors to correcting them after the fact. ;)
