It's probably a bad idea to write about your friend because of the conflict of interest. The friendship may keep you from writing neutrally about him.

If he is a notable person, and if there are reliable sources written about him, then the thing to do is start a draft, as you seem to have already done. You can submit it for review once you think it meets the notability criteria.
