Thanks so much! The vandals can be taxing, but it's definitely worth the effort. Take care!

Sheehan Article[edit]

Thanks for the headsup regarding the Sheehan vandal. I'll continue to keep an eye on him. Soltak 22:42, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I honestly don't worry about it too much. Pages that describe notable commercial entities are likely prone to the introduction of positive information by agents of said entities, but that's not the same as someone writing up an article on a non-notable business in the hopes of promoting it. Those articles are swiftly deleted, but as for notable entities, as long as edits are factual and not an attempt to remove negative information, there is no cause for alarm. Frankly, if every Fortune 500 company wants to have their PR person deposit a bunch of info about their company's good works into their article, I would welcome the contribution so long as it wasn't pure fluff, and so long as they did not try to supress unflattering details. -- BD2412 talk 02:16, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

Just curious[edit]

Why do you delete everything on your talk page instead of just archiving it. Your choice of course, I just wondered why. (Please feel free to ignore this personal question and please feel free of course delete this question entirely). hydnjo talk 02:58, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

An Administrator's Work Is Never Done...[edit]

Hi Karmafist. Thanks for the rewarding compliment. Viral marketing is a tricky subject. The user you describe seems more than likely a new user with an emotional attachment to the article they're working on, something close to them. It seems they've taken your advice and are open to communication which is a positive. Wikipedia has policies which come close to discussion on viral marketing, such as No Original Research and Vanity. There was some discussion about viral marketing on Wikipedia on the Wikipedia-l mailing list recently. You might wish to subscribe yourself to join the discussion there. List archives are available here if you've missed the main thrust of the debate. -- Longhair | Talk 03:01, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Red Eye[edit]

I moved Red Eye(drug) to Red Eye (drug) because the first lacks a space in the name before "(drug)". This is incorrect. —Tarnas 05:08, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chowdah template[edit]

Hi, I couldn't get your en-MA template to work, so I swiped and tweaked the code and put a version on my user page. I did something similar for the en-US box right above yours. Let me know what you think of the changes I made; mostly, I lightened the blue to make the text more readable and made the border the same red as the left cell. Friejose 16:44, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you liked my version. I figured you were aiming for a local team color scheme, so I tried to find a blue that worked. When you have a chance take a look at the Manny Ramirez and Yankees-Red Sox rivalry articles; I've been involved in dealing with some NYY fans there as you'll see on their respective talk pages. It'd be great if you could keep tabs on the situation. I want things to be fair and NPOV, unfortunately, those are amorphous terms, and baseball brings the passion out in people. Well, at least people from the Northeast! Thanks again, Friejose 18:09, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Good guess on the last name; no relation to the columnist, though I often like his writing. Let me know if there's any editing/articles I can help you with, and thanks again. Friejose 18:38, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nice tweak on the border of the template, I changed mine too. Also, sorry about the over-long length of the template on my user page, I lengthened it for my own nefarious purposes. – Friejose 12:53, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Law land[edit]

Taking off for the evening, but I'll write a nice long post on lawyering tomorrow. Thanks for the continued input. Friejose 22:25, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Work looks ridiculous today, but I haven't forgotten my promise of yesterday. Read the student loans article in the meantime, that's step one to understanding life as a lawyer. Also, thanks for the Tony Mas help. You know that if you simply put in the ISBN code, it automatically links to a ton of resources, libraries included, to find the referenced book? Just discovered it myself, vy cool. I'll show you what I mean on Mas' article page. – Friejose 12:53, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • So to finally answer your question, I enjoy being a lawyer most of the time. I do a fair amount of work around land use and other types of real estate disputes. It's great being in Boston; though I grew up around here, I never lived in the city until after law school. Politicians and lawyers seem to be an inspearable breed sometimes, but it makes some sense, the politicians draft the laws, right? Plus, law school gives you a framework with which to analyze issues and address those issues in a logical way, which is helpful when dealing with political topics. It's also that many lawyers are jerks, and so they're naturals to be politicians too (^_^) What are things like up in NH? – Friejose 21:28, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Human Rights Servey on Wikipedia (The final post of I_sterbinski)[edit]

Dear all,
Wikipedia was recently a subject of intensive research of an huge international human right organization. A team of people from different nationalities and ages were acting on Wikipedia for 20 days, investigating previously noted anomalities of Wikipedia free editing and forming a final report, which (between the others similar reports) will later be a guide to all future moves of the organization concerning Wikipedia. Acting under an account of a real person, their privacy is to be held private. Therefore, very few private information will be revealed.
Also, this is a result of the lack of final possition of the organization concerning Wikipedia and human rights, which was still not formed.
The team's final post on Wikipedia, where they explain their actions can be found on the following addresses:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:I_sterbinski
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Macedonia#Human_Rights_Servey_on_Wikipedia_.28The_final_post_of_I_sterbinski.29
The team would like to thank to all the persons who took part in the correspondence with us.
We also want to appologise for keeping our identity secret for a longer period.
Best regards,

irc[edit]

FWIW, I use ChatZilla. For a while before that I used xchat. Just wanted to let you know I got your note - I'll be happy to help you figure out IRC in a day or two but not tonight - too tired! :-) FreplySpang (talk) 03:20, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

Any luck on the IRC front? :-) FreplySpang (talk) 01:15, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
ChatZilla is built on top of Mozilla, so if you use FireFox or Mozilla (but not K-Meleon, for reasons I don't understand) it's great. You can Google it, download it and go. Otherwise, you might want to look at this list: [1] for other possibilities. There are several free clients out there - if you Google for "free IRC client" you'll get lots of choices. Once you get one it's pretty easy to set up. Hope this helps! FreplySpang (talk) 03:13, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks:)[edit]

Hello, and thanks for welcoming me. I'm quite used to the wikipedian style, just that I've newly made meself a user. However, I use wikimedia software privately, for storing notes from school, so I'm used to the wiki markup language. I guess I won't really be much involved, but a bit I guess...

I second that...and thanks for the encouragement. This guy has got to be shown the door and if it hits him on the way out, well, my heart shall bleed purple piss for him.  :) Seriously, let's see what he does after the block. If he's a good little monkey, I'm all for an RfA. If he moves so much as a millimeter out of line or I hear of one more attack or threat to a user, the boom's getting lowered. Good luck on your run for office! - Lucky 6.9 22:23, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just left word with Fire Star that our playmate is now taking a one-month time out. The e-mails just keep coming and he refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing on his part. Worse, the guy keeps using his automated signature which links to the sales section of his website! One more e-mail and he goes away for good. - Lucky 6.9 22:49, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As I also mention on Lucky's talk page, I'm afraid it was inevitable, and his behaviour certainly supports a ban. There was a brief period when I was able to get through to the guy, back in July or so, but the need for attention was too much for him. The fantasy martial arts business is a fertile breeding ground for histrionic personality disorder, I'm afraid. Cheers, --Fire Star 23:16, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder there. Copyrights on images that are modified into a new image were never my cup of tea. I'm going to make an explainer page by the end of today hopefully so I can finally get that bad boy on the Barnstar page.

Also, after looking at your page above(It looks pretty good), I was wondering if you could give me any tips to finally get to "Expert Wikipedian" status. I feel as though i'm at an intermediate level in a "Wikiplateau" of sorts. Karmafist 17:20, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can recomend usage of subpages. You seem to have a lot of long lists on your userspace. You may want to place them in sub articles. I can do this for you if you like. ;)

CDVF, IRC and other acronyms[edit]

Hi! Glad to hear you're getting ready to IRC!

CDVF uses IRC behind the scenes, but hides it away from the user. So you can use it without having to learn the details of Chatzilla etc. To install CDVF, look here: WP:CDVF#Usage. It's pretty straightforward. (The only twist is that you have to have the Java Runtime Environment on your computer, but if you don't, it's free and easy to install.) Just download the file called "vf.jar" and double-click it. No need to unpack it or anything. It should bring up a window with a big gray area and some buttons; one of the buttons says "Connect." Press it, and it will start showing you all the changes being made on the English Wikipedia as they happen. Double-click on any one of them and it will bring up the diff of that change.

If you want to use Chatzilla to chat with Wikipedia folks (there are always some around): Start FireFox. Click on the Tools menu and pick "ChatZilla". This will bring up a ChatZilla window that says, among other things, "Available networks are [dalnet, efnet, freenode, hybridnet, moznet, quakenet, serenia, slashnet, undernet, webbnet]." Click on "freenode". It will bring up a freenode window. Click in the one-line edit window at the bottom and type "/nick Karmafist" . (It will give you a message about registering your nick which you can ignore or follow as you please.) Then type "/join #wikipedia" and it will bring up another window with the Wikipedia channel. Anything you want to say, just type it in that one-line edit box.

Hope this helps! Let me know if it works for you. Cheers, FreplySpang (talk) 21:58, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oooh, FrSp beat me to it. Come back to irc soon :) +sj + 01:39, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
FrSp! :-) Honestly, I'm not sure what every single color in CDVF means. Pink means an edit by an anon ip. Orange means a newly-created page. Aqua/blue means a large change in size: often either blanking or copyvio. Then there's yellow, which I think is related to the "temp blacklist." Happy vandalfighting! Re: Question on the charts[edit]

Unfortunately, I can't help you without knowing what the problem is. What is your skill level with MS-Excel? If you have substantial experience with it, you should be able to recreate everything I've done using what I provided on User:Durin/Admin nominee charts as a model to follow. What problems are you having in particular? I reverted your change to the Admin nominee charts page because the section heading for that section changes every time I add a new chart. I update the number of images available in each section as I add material to them. Thus, referring to "Admin nominee edit analysis graphs (15)" will be quickly obsolete. I have the numbers on the ends of section headings so that I can more easily keep track of how many images in total I have contributed. Thanks, --Durin 17:18, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Crucial step (maybe I missed it in my description); select all of column A. Then replace "(hist) (diff)" with "--". Poof, all the #value!'s go away :) If that doesn't work, let me know. --Durin 13:36, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • Again, hard to know exactly what's going wrong. This would probably be easier if I just sent you a copy of the what I have. Could you please give me your e-mail address? Thanks, --Durin 14:48, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • Oh I absolutely agree that the charts do not capture any value to the edits. I think the subjective measures are considerably more important than objective measures. Also, I agree with your disagreement about talk pages and non-talk pages; I think edit summaries are important everywhere. See this diff for my rationale [4]. I only did the talk/non-talk numbers because Lord Voldemort raised it as an issue on his RfA. --Durin 22:18, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Election[edit]

Hey Karmafist,

I saw that you removed your vote for me in the Esperanza election with a summary of "per user page box error". Since I was playing with the Esperanza userboxes to switch them to the new template outside my user page, I wonder if I did something wrong with your user page. If that happened, I'm sorry and I apologize. But if it wasn't, then what did you mean by that? Titoxd(?!?) 00:18, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza hopes that your stress will become a part of the past soon.

[[Category:Stressed Wikipedians]] I apologize again. And I'm sorry you're having a crummy day. Is there anything we Wikipedians can do? Titoxd(?!?) 03:30, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's going to be hard to do the first one, since I'm in the wrong side of the U.S. And sorry, I'm rooting for the other sox, because you guys got your break last year (I've gotta be honest), but I am vehemently rooting for the Yankees to get completely annihilated!!! :D. And while I don't know of a job that pays to do Wikiwork, if I knew of one, I'd tell you where it is. But I can think of some things to feel better. When I'm stressed out, I either grab a tennis ball and whack it with a baseball bat (or something else that's violent and stress-releasing) or I go play something. I see you're a percussionist, so just go play and make the neighbors complain! Just go have fun doing something, man, that always works!!!!
P.S: Are you really running for public office? My sarcasm-detection device is deactivated right now, so I can't tell if you're serious about that one or not. Titoxd(?!?) 04:21, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Perfectly percolated Esperanza blend coffee, just for you!

Hmm, I can't help with any of the suggestions from Titoxd's page, but have a cup of coffee on me. Hope things get better. -- Essjay · Talk 04:16, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Man, quoting my best friend, "Stop looking at what's dragging you down the hole and look instead at what's dragging you out of the hole!" You got more than one-half of the votes the winner got. So it's not like no one knew about you. Just not enough people knew about you, and that can be fixed (maybe even the fact that you're a Wikipedian can help bring you attention somehow!) Also quoting her, "the darkest hour of the night is just before dawn breaks." So, if it is bad right now, just hang in there. Heck, so many things happened to me over the last year and I kinda found a refuge in Wikipedia, but now everything is much better. The same will happen with you. Titoxd(?!?) 05:07, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! I'm gonna get a holiday! :) 'cause I'm sure you're gonna do great in the election. Titoxd(?!?) 05:14, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Don't let an oppose vote get you down from your RfA. Just look here: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Redwolf24. I got 7 people opposing. I'm sure the case would be different if I were to run now, but I was actually feeling down because of those 7 people. Its nothing to worry about, and don't let it get to you. Yankees, etc.[edit]

Oh, I'll root for any team that's playing the Yanks, so does that make me a Red Sox fan? :) But I was so happy when the Sox beat the Yanks on the ALCS last year. I was jumping up and down because I dislike the Yankees so much. But man, if you want negativity, look at the D'backs the last two years... the only memorable year was when they beat... yep, the Yanks! :) Titoxd(?!?) 05:12, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I'm pretty sure they will, since baseball isn't going anywhere. Titoxd(?!?) 05:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anytime[edit]

Hey man, it was a pleasure. Let me briefly explain my vote (I dont usually do this, so bear with me.) I voted for you because of the various acts of kindness I have seen throughout wikipedia done by yourself. Edit count is one thing, but being a helpful, polite, and simply all round kind user is even more important, IMO. I am glad to see you and MONGO are ok as well now. During the Wikiproject:Wikipedians for Decency Vfd debacle (if you remember), I (on the other side of the issue) was also most impressed at your cool headedness and politeness while I, among others, came pretty close to losing it! So, all in all, you are now going to be listed in the new upcoming "users I hold in high regard" list on my userpage. Sorry for the message length, thats all I have to say. Esperanza Election[edit]

Karmafist, thank you very much for your vote of confidence in my bid to become one of the first members of the Esperanza Advisory Committee. Even though the elections not finished, and the final results are still out, I would like you to know that I appreciate your support, and look forward to working together in making Wikipedia a better place to work and edit. Cheers, Bratschetalk | Esperanza 18:18, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm...I have ten sandboxes... -- Essjay · Talk 04:34, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I used to use them a lot more often. (And I really only have five, I use the userpage as one and the talk page as a second.) -- Essjay · Talk 04:45, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
