User talk. I suppose you can post "talk" here and I could conceivably reply.

Your sorting links.[edit]

I've removed your sorting animation links. They hang my brower, and they are self promotion. Glrx (talk) 23:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry they hang your browser, have you considered switching browsers? Have you had other people complain that this causes their computer to have issues? The dozen or so I had test out the page had no issues, except that IE ran a bit slow and the Bubble sort will hang most things (stacking up 40k+ drawings...). If you have suggestions for improvement that is great. To solve the self promotion issue, would you like it if someone else were to add the links? Josh Kehn (talk) 00:03, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting from WP:NOT:
Self-promotion. It can be tempting to write about yourself or projects in which you have a strong personal involvement. However, do remember that the standards for encyclopedic articles apply to such pages just like any other, including the requirement to maintain a neutral point of view, which is difficult when writing about yourself or about projects close to you. Creating overly abundant links and references to autobiographical articles is unacceptable. See Wikipedia:Autobiography, Wikipedia:Notability and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.
Considering the relevance of the page in question (sorting demos) I can't believe that for any reason you would find them non-neutral, or an over abundance of links. I have not edited the articles to include links, I have not edited the articles for content (except in a few cases where the algorithms weren't implemented). I have included one link at the bottom of the page with the rest of the sorting demo pages. If you are having an issue with your browser I suggest you contact me outside of Wikipedia and follow this up as a bug, not justification for removal.Josh Kehn (talk) 00:24, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have many other problems with the links. You are proscriptive about browsers, so the link has a political tone. Getting someone else to add the links does not cure the promotion issue.
Were you the same person who was adding javascript code to the sorting pages?
Glrx (talk) 00:17, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did not add the JS code to the pages, except in the Odd-even sort because an existing implementation was not there. Someone did contact me about adding those, (see discussions) and I found that the links were pointed to my blog post instead of the actual page.
The links have a political tone? What about the links that require having a JRE installed? Would that not also limit the people who can view them? Can you please elaborate on the "many other problems" that you find (other then the fact you have to have a semi-modern browser) to view the page correctly?
Josh Kehn (talk) 00:24, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:LINKSPAM. See WP:COI. You want people to view your animations. Animations may be nice to watch, but they don't add encyclopedia content. That other links are bad is not a justification for another bad link. Glrx (talk) 00:42, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Which would by why it's under External Links instead of linked to from the main content or under references. By the same token all sorting demo pages should be removed? What "other links" are you talking about? There is only one page that was (or should have been) linked to. After reading WP:LINKSPAM I would appreciate it if you found a specific section you feel is particularly applicable to this instance, because I couldn't. I also don't believe this is a conflict of interests, I'm not Ford adding links to Ford under articles. Again, if someone else adding these links still wouldn't be applicable I would like to know why. You are taking these two pages (linkspam and COI) out of the original context they apply to.
How would you define encyclopedia content? Would pictures be applicable encyclopedia content? How about drawings? Animations? Paintings? I don't believe that these animations by themselves are wholly available for inclusion in an encyclopedia, however I do believe that when augmented with the articles noted they do contribute a great deal.
Josh Kehn (talk) 00:50, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the first sentence under WP:LINKSPAM. You are promoting your website. You are denigrating IE. See also WP:PROMO. You mentioned other links with JRE. You are Kehn adding links to Kehn's work. The pages are not out of context. Bottom line: I believe your link is inappropriate for WP. Glrx (talk) 01:10, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did not add those links with the purpose of promotion. I mention that dependency on the JRE on that page, yes. Yes I am me adding links to my work. The pages are out of context considering the scope of these link spamming accusations. If you dislike me adding it, add it yourself. The question isn't who added it but what purpose does it serve and does it better the whole, I believe it does.
Adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam.
This is not my intention.
Sometimes, people come to Wikipedia with the intention of spamming—creating articles which are mere advertisements or self-promotion, or spewing external links to a web site over many articles.
Again, this it not my intention. Someone initially added my link, contacted me, and I changed it because it was incorrect.
Josh Kehn (talk) 01:16, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just want to second what Glrx says. Your user name is Josh Kehn and you are adding links to a joshuakehn blog. How can that not be regarded as self-promotion? Also, your sorting animations hang sometimes on my computer as well. Not all the time, and it unhangs again after a minute or so, but still. I use Firefox so it's not wholly a browser issue. It would be irresponsible to keep those links there. Reyk YO! 06:42, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's not self promotion because I'm not adding links everywhere to promote my site or myself, I'm adding a link because it is relevant to the page. Can I ask what specific sort is hanging your browser? I have no issues with any of them except the bubble sort. Please note that issues specific to the page should not be addressed on WP but rather elsewhere. Would I remove links with Applets because my computer doesn't have a JRE?
I would also like to point out that I did not add the initial link and was correcting this link. People don't seem to see that in the revision history.
Would it not be self promotion if I were to use a different user name? I happen to use the same name on almost all sites with a login because I believe in transparency. If you feel this is self promotion then I can either (a) change my name or (b) find someone else to add the links.
Josh Kehn (talk) 15:14, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Your suggested strategies for avoiding self promotion are both wrong and disturbing. See WP:SOCKPUPPET, WP:MEAT and astroturfing. None of those methods addresses the political tone of the site or the defects in the implementation. Glrx (talk) 15:56, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that there is not political tone on the site. Address defects in the implementation separately or at least point them out. This is not a reference or quoted, it is an external link.
Having read astroturfing I find it amusing you would say that this is a political or advertising campaign that has been formally planed but disguised as "spontaneous" behavior. I would invite you to make a more convincing argument (such as point out where the sort page is political) or to stop this bickering over the minor issue I have with displaying sorts using a Java Applet and your apparent major issue with good content. This shouldn't be about the letter of the law (Don't add links to sites you control) but about the spirt of the law (Half a dozen sort demos, why not this one?).
Josh Kehn (talk) 16:28, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • G'day, I'd like to chime in and say that I don't consider these links self promotion, but rather useful external links. They would be improved even further if: (i) you could link to your page with the relevant sort algorithm already selected, instead of having to select it each time; (ii) you had links back to the wiki pages for the various algorithms --- I selected a different algorithm to look at, and found myself wanting to jump to a description after I had seen it in action; (iii) I would also think the page more aesthetically pleasing if the warning was at the bottom, but I can see why you want to warn people about it first....

I've been turned off to any further Wikipedia editing / discussion. If you would like to add a link to the page that's fine.

See this was declined, correctly, since the “duplicate” article is for a previous model device which shares nothing with the current device except the name. Josh Kehn (talk) 00:13, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
