Paul Motian

Hi JonnyJonson. You obviously think that "expansion" of the article means adding (sometimes multiple) bare external links to the record label company catalogue for every possible record release by Motian. Personally I think these are all very useful (even if they do look exceedingly ugly without converting into {{cite web}} format). But, I'm pretty sure, they are (perhaps unfortunately) contrary to wikipedia policy for linking to primary commercial sites. I'll not revert you again, but beware - somebody else very probably will. The way the article is now, it looks like an extended marketing ploy by ECM. Was that your aim? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:02, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Martin,

My aim is of no interest to ECM, whose record sales are, I believe, quite sufficient without my help. I was not aware it was contrary to policy to publish links to the record labels that produced a particular album; I have seen this done on Wiki pages dedicated to various albums. Can I please confirm if it actually is in violation? All you said was "I'm pretty sure".

I'm not great with HTML and haven't written much on Wikipedia, so my apoligies for not having the best aesthetic sense. I'm still 'feeling' my way along. Perhaps a more experienced Wiki user might clean the presentation up if they care to do so.

I am not affiliated with ECM, or CAM Jazz, or Winter and Winter, all of which now I've provided links to. I intend also to add links to artist websites, as and when I get time, such as now. This is because many releases that feature Paul Motian were released on small/independent labels, or via artist websites, and I'd like to offer direct links (so that music buyers don't feel they have to automatically use a large, online music retailer).

Personally speaking, I don't care for the multiple links on Wikipedia to the website AllMusic.com, which contains links to pay-per-use streaming services... Perhaps there is a potential for 'conflict of interest' there?

Thanks for clarifying your position. It's pretty obvious that you are editing in good faith here. As I said, I am even somewhat sympathetic to what you are adding. But, having myself, in the past, been reprimanded for what you are now doing, I think it's best if I ask for a steer from an uninvolved admin. Thanks for your patience. Hi again Jonny Jonson. I've now had a word with a few admins, and the conclusion seems to be that the material, as it stands, is a case of WP:NOTCATALOG violation. I wonder would you consider removing those links, perhaps taking advice as to which, if any, could be retained? Or would you prefer me to open a discussion thread at Talk:Paul Motian? I strongly suspect that, however much or little discussion ensued at the talk page, if the topic were to be taken to a RfC, the outcome would be the same. Thanks. Martin, thanks for your message. Haven't logged on here in a while. To be honest, I'm unsure of what WP:NOTCATALOG violation is. My intention with those links was to provide users with a direct link to a musician/label's website; so if a user finds a Paul Motian (or related) album they like, they can buy it from a direct source (i.e, the musician's personal website, or the record label distributing the album in question). I do this so that users don't feel they have to go to a huge retailer such as Amazon; you know, I'm trying to give the 'little guys' a chance to sell some records to enthusiasts. There cannot be a conflict of interest here because I'm providing links to so many different artists/record labels, there is no evidence of favouritism, or any commercial interest on my part. However, I took a lot of time to provide those links and obviously Wikipedia doesn't care for what I've done. So I won't carry on, frankly I have better things to do now. Regards, Jon

Hello again. How about someone looks into the amount of AllMusic links on Wikipedia. As I mentioned before, they offer a subscription streaming service called Stream and Download. Surely this is a commercial conflict of interest? How about Wikipedia admin take a look at that and consider editing/deleting links to AllMusic? Regards, Jon

Are we now having a re-run of the "adding an external link for every Paul Motian recording" approach? How is this any different? If you have a problem about the use of AllMusic you need to take it to Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, not mount some personal external links vendetta? I would appreciate a less personal tone being taken in your communication. As a moderator, you have an example to set.

How are my actions a 'vendetta'? I'm not sure how this is a direct protest of any descriptiom. It was insinuated by yourself that I was undertaking some kind of marketing campaign on behalf of numerous record labels and part of my response was to illustrate that if there is a 'conflict of interest', then the proliferation of AllMusic links at Wikipedia could/should be investigated.

Please confirm what it is exactly that I can learn from the Tomasz Stańko page. I am assuming you mean to illustrate the method of discography lay out? That instead of providing 'references', should I attach a link to the name of the individual, or record label, responsible for releasing the album in question? Is this what you mean for me to understand?

You are always welcome to post a reminder at my Talk Page. I'm also sorry if you think my tone is too "personal". But I'm not any kind of moderator. I'm just an ordinary editor like you. I have no example to set, apart from by way of any experience I may have managed to acquire. Be assured that your edits are not a vendetta... they just seemed so to me when they suddenly appeared. So I apologise for over-reacting like that. You have shown yourself to be a responsible and enthusiastic editor. Yes, that was my suggestion about Stańko - those links seem to be acceptable. Martin... I had indeed lost some degree of interest but I signed in a few days ago and put the links in (such as the one to Jakob Bro's personal website).

Regarding my AllMusic objection, I did take a look at the Reliable Sources board, as per your suggestion. I'm not quite sure what to do there though. Does it operate on the same methods that we use to communicate on this page?

Yes, it does operate in much the same way. That was my best guess of where to start. But I think your problem is that AllMusic is treated as being all too reliable. So, on seconds thoughts, a better place to post your concerns might be at Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/Noticeboard. You can simply open a new thread on that noticeboard asking for comments on the topic of over-use/ over-reliance on AllMusic. I'd be very interested to learn the history behind its use and the rationale for its predominance. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:20, 13 August 2013 (UTC) p.s. regarding your links for Jakob Bro - there is no need to duplicate them at the Paul Motian article - if readers want to learn ore about Jacob Bro, they can simply navigate to his page and look there. There is some degree of overlap in the use of external links across articles, but not everything has to be duplicated wherever someone's name appears - that's why we have internal links. That's what I seem to have found works best, anyway.
