Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Johan Elisson. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Translation of Blåvitt

By translating "Blåvitt" into "The Blue-White" there's less of a chance seeing things like "In the next round they meet the Blåvitt", instead of the more correct "In the next round they meet Blåvitt". Aikclaes (talk) 06:03, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Perhaps, but Wikipedia does not exist to simplify translation of each non-English word for people, but to tell people facts. If the Swedish nickname is used in a specific form (no article), then of course the English translation should use the same form (also no article). See for example the colour nickname for Hertha BSC where the German form has an article, and thus the translation also has it. Or the nicknames for Real Sociedad where the colour nickname does not have an article in original or translation, but the other nick has. – Elisson • T • C • 14:17, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Johan Elisson.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Technical news

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Name of IFK Göteborg fans

Hi, I saw you reverted me edit where I added what a fan of IFK Göteborg is called in Swedish. I think it is highly appropriate in a section about supporters of IFK Göteborg. Also, I cannot think of any other words for them than IFK:are. You claim there are a multitude of words, so can you mention three other words that refer to a fan of the club? Three other words: Blåvit, Kamrat, Ängel. (IFK) Göteborgare could probably also be added to the list of common names for IFK Supporters, besides terms like IFK-supporter, Blåvittsupporter and so on. My main point though, was that the content isn't really encyclopedic. The very standard Swedish "-are" suffix used to form a term for persons associated with a town or organisation doesn't give any encyclopedic information.
Looking through the other Featured Articles on football clubs (21 in total excluding IFK Göteborg), only three (I do not count Malmö FF were you just added the information, I suggest you self-revert it) give any additional information on what supporters are called. Arsenal F.C. mention "Gooners" and the background to that name. FC Barcelona mention "culé" and the background to that name. Liverpool F.C. mention "Kopites" and the background to that name.
In all three cases, these names are not directly derived from the club name or any club nickname, and thus has some merit on its own. The supporters of the other 19 Featured Article clubs of course also are called something, but that's just not encyclopedic enough to warrant a mention.
While we are at it, could you please source the content you are adding? I appreciate most edits you do, but they would be even better if your sourced them. Take for example this edit and your subsequent edits to that paragraph. I've added a source for it now, but it can be problematic if you add content without backing it up with a source. Especially since the mentioned edit was actually incorrect ("five companies visible") which you later corrected. – Elisson • T • C • 18:59, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
I have searched the internet for all the three examples you provided of the "multitude" of names for IFK supporters you claim exists, and I have struggled to find hits for "en blåvit", "en ängel", "en kamrat" referring to an IFK Göteborg supporter. I found several examples of "IFK Göteborgare" though. Granted, "Blåvitt" and "Änglarna" are often used to refer to mainly the team itself, but we are discussing what an IFK Göteborg supporter is usually called in Swedish. I can definitely see people coming to this page to look up what a team's supporter is called in the team's native language, no matter how obvious it might be to a Swede, so I don't see why this info should be left out altogether. And even though the ending -are is very common in Swedish, it can't be added to all club names to form the name of a supporter of the club. Aikclaes (talk) 22:57, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
Currently the section about IFK Göteborg's supporters has more of a "history of" feel to it. I'm not saying that info is irrelevant, but I definitely think it's better to first state what a supporter of a club is called, then go on about the history of the club's support, maybe under a sub paragraph. Thanks for the suggestion to source my edits more often. I can definitely improve in this area. I admit having a lack of knowledge about what sources would be relevant in the case you mentioned. Yes, people could probably look for a lot of things on Wikipedia in general. That's not an argument for inclusion. Read WP:NOTEVERYTHING. And no, stating what an IFK supporter is usually called does not help with giving the section less of a "history of" feel.
Again, what supporters are called is generally not encyclopedic content, unless, as said it differs greatly from the club name or nicknames.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

IFK Göteborg

Thanks for good cooperation on this article. The paragraph about their clubhouse is, however, rather inclear. Their first clubhouse was used mainly by other sport departments in the club. Was Kamratgården always used solely by the football department? I figured so, but however it may be, this should be made clear. Aikclaes (talk) 17:23, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

It has been used by most departments from time to time. I don't think this needs to be clarified though, and I don't have a source for it. Fair enough. And thanks for the remark about references. One of my weak points, no doubt. I can't figure out though what in the entrance-music section needs references. I just added a link to the not yet created page about the statue. Unfortunately only available in Swedish currently.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
