Sure, I'm willing to help out. The message didn't seem patronizing, but since I've been here a while, to me it was a) obviously a template/stock message that you'd tweaked some (the Chris Taylor bit) and b) mis-targeted towards a new user, which I wasn't. I imagine it would have been much more effective with a new user, kind of a "hey, someone noticed and appreciated what you did". To make it less impersonal, I'd change the wording a bit- no random passerby would really say "Dear PresN", they'd just say "hey" or "hi"- "Dear" is for formal letters, and I know my own username :). The short, choppy sentences also felt very formal; I noticed those even more than the fact that they could have applied to any article at all. It's a good idea though; WP is pretty bad about making new users feel welcome and appreciated, so every bit helps. --PresN 21:06, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU (Aug 15)

Since you are one of the editors in the Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Carnegie Mellon University, I'd like to invite you to the Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop that will take place at CMU on Aug 15 (this workshop is open to general public, and is a joint imitative of CMU and Pitt). There will be another workshop held at Pitt in the Fall as well. It will cover how to include Wikipedia in one's course (WP:SUP) and also how to become a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassadors. Pennsylvania has currently only one ambassador (myself) and it would be great if we could recruit at least several more. Ambassadors help course instructors, showing them how Wikipedia works, and interact with students. Many current ambassadors come from the body of students, faculty and university staff; it is a fun adventure, and adds to one resume/CV, to boot :) If it sounds interesting, feel free to ask me any questions, or to come to the workshop.--_{Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk} 20:14, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Jipinghe, while I appreciate your message, and what you seem to be trying to do with new page patrol in general, but I have some reservations. While it is true that John Wallop, Viscount Lymington lacks section headings, it is four (meager) paragraphs long. There simply isn't enough content to support a good subdivision at present. And you advised me to wikify Earl of Portsmouth, an article which not only doesn't need wikification, but has never, as far as I can tell, needed wikification. While I think your project of reaching out to users about the new articles they're creating is a wonderful one, I have to say that if I were a new user, I would be rather confused by your suggestions. John Hess

There are plenty of external references on that page for John Hess (journalist) for the information given. I can show you plenty of pages that do not have any external references - worry about those first.

uploading images

it's complicated. as i noted on my talk: User_talk:Slowking4#Peter_Guy_Wolynes, there are lots of head shots of those scholars on the web, but none with a clear free use license. this will get you a quick deletion. it's an ongoing problem. you can either take your own photo and upload it, or talk to UCSD and Harvard. explaining the wikipedia disdain for Noncommercial; no derivative restrictions (why we need a photo without them) can be difficult. Thank you for your kind words about my article All-Time Greatest Hits (Ray Stevens album). As a fan of Ray Stevens, I'm doing everything I can to provide as much information as possible on every album and compilation of his music, particularly old LPs that are out of print. I do want to be honest with you about references; I buy copies of all his albums, so all the "references" that I use are the albums themselves.
