Sunday January 13: Wikipedia Day 2019 in NYC

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day 2019, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 18th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event features keynote presentations, panels, lightning talks, and, of course, open space sessions.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

9:30AM - 6:00PM at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th Street in Manhattan

We especially encourage folks to add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 20:35, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

I successfully replaced my password and logged in[edit]

...at the Carroll Gardens branch of the Brooklyn Publc Library at the corner of Clinton Street and Union Street. It worked even though something like this didn't seem to work at Highlawn. I need to discover if there is some problem specific to Highlawn but at least I have and know a working password.

Hey there's a paragraph on you here in the Washington Post. Sooner or later we'll have a wikipage on you.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 11:37, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your good work being recognized. Congrats Jim. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:37, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I dropped a note on your Commons talk page, but I'm happy to do so here as well - very nice, congratulations! You're definitely one of the good guys. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:54, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Surprising development. The publicity mentioned above has attracted the attention of Angie Gonzalez of NY1 News. No, not the athlete on whom we have an article; the reporter who works the Queens beat on the news channel. I met her in Flushing today and talked into her camera and performed, biking past her for a video clip and snapping a landmark picture. She put me in touch with the guest booker for the channel's morning show. I might be on for a live interview, tomorrow morning. I await further word. What next, Rosanna Scotto (I've long been a fan) and Channel 5? Probably not. As for becoming Wikinotable myself, the idea engenders some unease, keeping in mind the many who have done much more to make WP great. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:45, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. And a great way to improve the public perception of Wikipedia. Maybe you can float the Nobel Peace Prize idea, that Wikipedia should be nominated yearly and should win it within a few years. Long live landmarks. Randy Kryn (talk) 22:13, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nope; not happening. The booking clerk E-mailed that there will be no interview. Hey, at least that means I won't have to get up in the morning. A story will use, however, footage from our Flushing meeting. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:47, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
So, yes, the story happened. Online I only find a still and a transcript. Probably the video is not online due to commercial policy. https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2019/01/17/meet-the-manhattan-man-who-s-a-professional-wikipedia-photographer--

Just saw you on NY1 ![edit]

Congrats! It was a great segment and you represented yourself and your work for Wikipedia very well! dm (talk) 16:55, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

BTW - what app were you using that shows articles without photos? dm (talk) 03:04, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Two different things, @Dmadeo: the Commons:Commons:Mobile app and the Website Wikishootme. Each is buggy. First, the mobile app often crashes. Second, to reach the Website you may have to delete the end of the URL to make it work. We could meet and discuss it. Actually, my brush with fame has made me think. Maybe for that reason I should call it a brush with danger. Anyway some of us NYC Wikiphotographers and Commons photo curators could meet and swap tips. Maybe end up with a club or committee of WMNYC or something. The next event of WMNYC is at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Fordham/DigitalHumanities which is an edit-athon a week from Friday for newbies but to me it also looks like an opportunity to meet for a little while, before or after. There will be others in February. Anybody else have an opinion or proposal? Jim.henderson (talk) 05:10, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Photos at Hudson Yards[edit]

Some attention has gone to a claim of the real estate company in their Hudson Yards terms and conditions, to the right to use photos that are published in social media and show their "The Vessel" structure, whether as background or whatever. I have been asked for an opinion. Being on my way to an editathon in Brooklyn as part of the busy month of March, I must be hasty and haven't even looked at my photos of opening day Friday, but here's an instant reaction:

For one thing, I don't know whether WP and Commons count as "social media" but my guess is they do. I am displeased, if it means my works will be used commercially without credit, but it has happened before, so it's rather a mild displeasure. Perhaps there's a better forum to discuss this question, than my own WP user talk page. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:47, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Account security[edit]

Hi Jim.henderson, please can you confirm that you are not allowing other people to access your account, as appears to be the case with mit=3&type=&user=Jim.henderson&page= these log entries and these edits? As a friendly heads-up, we do often block accounts which appear to be compromised, and that maintaining account security is one of the requirements for access to the event coordinator flag. Cheers! stwalkerster (talk) 20:38, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you kindly, User:Stwalkerster@ it indeed indicated a problem but it was all my fault. Coaching at an editathon at School of Visual Arts I misinstructed a newbie who fortunately did no major damage with her accidentally two accounts. Then, using my own account, I got clumsy trying to correct a minor resulting problem. No stolen account; merely a coach having a stupider afternoon than usual. Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

Armories in New Jersey[edit]

I'm not sure if we've ever interacted on Wikipedia, but your user name is familiar to me. You might be interested in the article about Newark architect Charles Alling Gifford, who designed 5 NJ armories, including Paterson's. The 1906 NJ Adjudant-General's report contains a wealth of information about those 5 armories. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:42, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, @BoringHistoryGuy: I haven't often brought my bike to New Jersey this year. Just one ride through Bayonne last month, with pictures that I hope to upload in the coming week. The main reason I do architectural pictures is that it gives me an excuse for a bike ride, and especially an excuse to stop pedaling awhile. This activity has incidentally kindled a mild interest in architecture itself.
I ought to visit the Philadelphia Wikisalon some time this summer, and chat with the Philly Wikkans I met at Wikimedia North America. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:04, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Food: Weapon of Conquest[edit]

Please note that Category:Canadian films is considered to be an "all-inclusive" category — that means that even if a film is subcategorized in one or more "Canadian genre films" subcategories, it still has to be filed in the parent category anyway, because the parent category is expected to be a complete list of all Canadian films. All other countries' head "Nationality films" categories work the same way, so this isn't a special rule that's being applied to Canadian films in particular — it's a standard consensus of WikiProject Film that national film categories always work that way, because people don't always know a film's correct genre in advance of reading the article. Saturday November 16, 12:30 pm - 4:30pm: Metropolitan Museum of Art Edit-a-thon

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

12:30 pm - 4:30 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

And there will be sandwiches and Wiki-Cake!

Thanks, and hope to see you there! --Wikimedia New York City Team 16:45, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Today, most of the millions of kilometres of twisted pairs in the world are outdoor landlines, owned by telephone companies, used for voice service, and only handled or even seen by telephone workers.[edit]

You added the statement: Today, most of the millions of kilometres of twisted pairs in the world are outdoor landlines, owned by telephone companies, used for voice service, and only handled or even seen by telephone workers. to the Twisted-pair page in 2006. I am suspecting that withe amount of UTP networking cable now installed, much since 2006, that it might not be true. Would you be against removing it? thanks, Gah4 (talk) 00:57, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Maria Mitchell "Politics" Subsection Heading[edit]

Hi Jim! My name is Belajane41; I'm one of the students who has been working to update the Maria Mitchell page this fall. Thank you for reading and editing the page! My partner on this project and I were talking about the new heading, and were wondering what your thoughts were on how to name the subsection currently titled "Politics". We retained the heading "Efforts" from the original version of the article because we felt that it encompassed Mitchell's wider interests from her religious background to her work with women's rights and education. To us, the term "Politics" seems like a closer fit but may still be a bit too narrow, as Mitchell's involvement in these issues seems to be more reflective of a participation in a social or ideological movement rather than a purely political one. Perhaps a term like "Activism" could show this perspective? We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic! Feel free to respond here or reach out to our talk page. Thanks again for your help and contribution!

All the best, Belajane41 (talk) 01:18, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to discuss, Belajane41 but this may become somewhat complex, better served by the Article Talk Page Talk:Maria Mitchell in case others are interested in the subject but not looking in my personal Talk Page. I'll copy your comment there, and we'll see. Jim.henderson (talk) 04:22, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
