Categorizing[edit]

If someone attended a University, then they should get included in the Alumni Category. I do not care if they are already under a players category, we need to add them to both! By not including them as regular alumni, it's like your not recognizing that they attended classes at that respective institution. We need to give them academic & athletic recognition. Before adding a category to an article, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified. If it has not been already, it may be removed if the category has not been deemed correct for the subject matter. Thank you. —C.Fred (talk) 17:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Before adding parent categories to articles already in subcategories, please explain how this enhances the categorization process and makes it easier to navigate—especially since it goes against the Wikipedia:Categories guidelines to use as few categories as possible. —C.Fred (talk) 17:11, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As a follow up to your comments regarding Category:University of Florida alumni, please defer to what C. Fred said. Per WP:Categories, there should be a few categories as possible. Adding a parent category like Category:University of Florida alumni to pages that already have a sub-category of it like Category:Florida Gators football players is unnecessary and does not follow that Wikipedia guideline. If every article included every parent category of all of its categories, some articles would have well over 1,000 categories. It's unnecessary. That is the whole point of having sub-categories. Whether the player gets "recognized for his academic and athletic achievements" is irrelevant to Wikipedia. In fact, they are, because of the whole sub-category system. Florida Gators football players are automatically categorized, by way of these sub-categories, into parent categories like alumni and University of Florida and American Universities and so-on. So adding another layer to the page doesn't make sense, and is highly discouraged under WP:Categories. Thanks for your understanding. Pats1 T/C 19:25, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
