News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • There is an ongoing request for comment to streamline the source deprecation and blacklisting process.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold a Arbcom RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. A draft RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC (Draft) and not open to comments from the community yet. Interested editors can comment on the RfC itself on its talk page.

Miscellaneous

  • The WMF has begun a pilot report of the pages most visited through various social media platforms to help with anti-vandalism and anti-disinformation efforts. The report is updated daily and will be available through the end of May.

AfC notification: Draft:Joe Mesmar has a new comment

I've left a comment on your Articles for Creation submission, which can be viewed at Draft:Joe Mesmar. Thanks! Theroadislong (talk) 21:14, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Abhimanyu Pawar

Hello, Interstellarity. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Abhimanyu Pawar".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! Jalen Folf (talk) 21:24, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

@JalenFolf: This was not my draft. I took a look back on my edit and I think I moved an article out from the Teahouse to its own page in draftspace. I don't remember what I did back then. Interstellarity (talk) 22:02, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Frankly, I'm rather discomfited that you have the new page reviewer right while not being aware of the status of taxon articles. If you would send a random species article to AfD, what have you been doing with the much more difficult-to-assess stubs that come through the NPP feed? Please do make sure that you have a good overview of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes before carrying out any more reviewing. Cheers --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 23:44, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

@Elmidae: Please accept my apologies for my actions. I have closed the discussion and will try to be more careful reviewing pages. I also read WP:SPECIESOUTCOMES. Interstellarity (talk) 23:47, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

@Thegooduser: Is the message supposed to be for both of us or just me? Interstellarity (talk) 19:07, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

I am going to add one. --Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 19:08, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

I’ve reverted you. I’m not aware of anyone who asked for the change. The “new” logo is a few years old, has never been used, and I don’t think anyone asked for it. Also, in my view, it looks worse, but that’s just my view. TonyBallioni (talk) 13:08, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni: Thanks for your feedback. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and thanks for sharing yours with me. Interstellarity (talk) 13:51, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Brost

Hi Interstellarity, I edited Brost before I noticed that you had just created the page. I'm sorry about that - had I noticed beforehand, I would have contacted you ahead of time. Since all of the entries are people, I changed the page to a surname page rather than a disambiguation page. I dug up a reference on the surname origin and included an intro sentence from that. If you have objections, comments, etc, feel free to contact me. Leschnei (talk) 14:58, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

I'll leave the message with User:Surnbrostnamer as well. Leschnei (talk) 15:00, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
@Leschnei: I have no objections to doing that. Interstellarity (talk) 15:46, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Need help

There is a message (this one) that is interfering with posts down below such as the post that this message is on. Should I delete the message to fix it? If not, can you fix it for me please? Interstellarity (talk) 15:56, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

The Editor's Barnstar was broken, I've fixed that for you.  Majavah (t/c) 16:02, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Accessibility concerns

Could you read over MOS:DONTHIDE.--Moxy 🍁 00:57, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Moxy. The reason behind my edits is that Sdkb and I were discussing how to improve the FAQ page. The discussion is here. I apologize if my edits were unconstructive. You are welcome to contribute to the discussion on Sdkb's talk page. Interstellarity (talk) 01:02, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
We have had some really bad decisions as of late in regards to help pages. Best talk to those that have experienced with help pages and know hiw to retaining and gain editors. I agree the pages could use some redesign but that should follow our basic accessibility rules.--Moxy 🍁 01:07, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
@Moxy: Where is the best place to get a consensus regarding help pages? Interstellarity (talk) 01:22, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
For input the Help and accessibility projects can guide you as what is best...but most pages can be changed at will....most will not revert as long as it takes into account mobile view and disabled readers. Things have to be accessible for screen readers, mobile view and those that don't use a mouse.... we have many many many editors that don't even use a keyboard (like me many times). Help Pages by definition should be simple and helpful..... not complicated InDesign or hard to navigate. There should be zero learning curve when you come to a help page to figure out how the help page works.... thus a default looking page usually works best. We have tried fancy design pages in the past WP:Tutorial (I did) and the Wikipedia Adventure both failed miserably.--Moxy 🍁 01:34, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on hospitals

I've moved this into Draft where you can expand it before it goes live. It's now at Draft:Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on hospitals. Nick (talk) 20:20, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Nick. I have a quick question. I hold AFC reviewer rights. Am I allowed to move my own articles to mainspace? Interstellarity (talk) 21:18, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Interstellarity, I happened to be debating what to do with that article when Nick draftified it (an option I was also considering). So by rules are you allowed to move that article back to mainspace? Yes - in fact any editor who has been autoconfirmed with or without AfC is technically allowed to do so to any draft. Do I think you should move that article back to mainspace right now? A firm no. There is a reasonable article to be made at that topic but having something more than a single sentence about a single country feels important even as a stub. And the previous version, with all those empty sections, was definitely not ready for mainspace and something as an NPP and AfC you would agree with. Please flesh it out so it's at least a reasonable stub before you move it back to mainspace. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 21:35, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: I know it is clearly not ready for mainspace. I plan on writing about how the hospitals were impacted in different countries. I'm debating how I am going to set it up. Should I do headings for each country or talk about each country in a single paragraph? Of course, when I gets moved back to mainspace, others editors can build upon my article. Those are my thoughts on the potential article. Interstellarity (talk) 21:41, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: Hello again, I noticed on Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on journalism, this is a paragraph, but it was marked as reviewed. I edited the article a little bit and I think it is ready for mainspace. I think it is a good start so if other editors want to expand on this article, they can make it even better. What are your thoughts? Please feel free to make changes to the article to make it look better. Interstellarity (talk) 22:09, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Interstellarity, if you feel like you have a good overall summary of the topic, even in stub form, you are of course welcome to move it back to mainspace. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:33, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Barkeep49: Thank you. I accidentally moved it to talk space so I moved it back to article space. I put in a tech request to move the draft talk namespace to talk. See here. Interstellarity (talk) 22:39, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Improve new article

Hi, Interstellarity,

I saw that you declined my draft: draft:Syriacs-Arameans, Can you give me any tips to improve the page so it has more chance to not to be declined.

Thanks in advance!!

MixedButHumann (talk) 14:34, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello MixedButHumann. If I were working on this draft, I would add sources throughout your article to support your claims. You can check out WP:YFA for some tips on improving your article. Please let me know if you are still confused or ask at the Teahouse for feedback on improving your article. Interstellarity (talk) 14:41, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Tagging of Therapy Sessions

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Therapy Sessions. I do not think that Therapy Sessions fits any of the speedy deletion criteria  because this is not a repost (G4): the former article was about different music by a different set of artists, only the name is the same. a look at the old AfD should have made that clear. Even the dates are a giveaway -- this is an upcoming 2020 album, the deleted article was about a 2016 event. If you wish, you may try using the simple proposed deletion (PROD) process, or the full articles for deletion (AfD) process, instead. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 23:49, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

@DESiegel: I'm sorry. I did not realize that the article was about a different subject. If I were an admin, I would be able to see deleted articles and I would be easier to determine if the article fits the criteria. As a non-admin, how can I determine whether an article meets G4? Interstellarity (talk) 00:08, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
It is true that an admin can more easily check such things, which is why an admin must verify a speedy deletion. Sometime a non-admin simply can't tell. In this case there were two clues that did not require looking at the old deleted article. 1) the old AfD nom statement said Music event ... the article has been tagged for questionable notability and lack of sources since 2013. The current article is about an album (not an event) to be published in 2020, which is a hint that they two are different. 2) the AfD nom went on to say: I can't find any sources that are independent of the company behind the events, Freak Recordings but this was not the company said to be behind the current article. Again, a hint that these are two different subjects. Together, it seems to me these raised enough of a flag to warrant some further checking, or perhaps a note on the talk page to make sure that a reviewing admin double checked -- most would but some accept tags a bit too automatically at times.
Still, the page was not improperly deleted and no harm was done, Note that the current articel is unsourced, and may have its own problems, but should not be deleted based on the prior AfD about n a different thing. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:26, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@DESiegel: That's clear to me. Thank you. Interstellarity (talk) 10:45, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
