  The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30. Pi day Thursday[edit]
Today after leaving the Wikidata editathon at NY Botanical Garden I walked up to Norwood and thought of you. You might perhaps have been interested, despite the somewhat esoteric topic. Tomorrow's meetup at the nearby Fordham U campus is less esoteric, or at least we'll be teaching something in which I'm less lost. Perhaps you would like to be there and discuss pictures or whatever other thing. Starting at 4 PM we will be chatting followed by teaching and coaching newbies; later will be eating and again chatting. South Bronx Greenway[edit]

- Randalls Island is mentioned in the article, and it falls under New York County/Manhattan. I realized that I had not checked if parts of the South Bronx Greenway project extended into Randalls Island or if it stopped at the edge of the island. I was also distracted at several times today, so I decided after a few half-hearted edits to take the rest of today off. --HugoHelp (talk) 00:19, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- HugoHelp, I don't know where these things are officially defined, but this article says that the Randall's Island Connector extends into both The Bronx and Randalls Island, and that the Randall's Island Connector is part of the South Bronx Greenway. Hey, HugoHelp! I'm trying to get a couple of photos in the Bronx for Jenny Bui. She's a nail artist with unbelievably over-the-top nail art designs. I'm planning to nom for DYK and would be so grateful for photos of her art (and her, of course), which I understand is displayed at her salons in the Bronx and Harlem. Is that anything you'd be willing to do? I'd like to nom for DYK, but the stuff she designs is so crazy that I think it really needs a photo. - Valereee besides the need to go inside to shoot small things, when we outdoor photographers love the great outdoors and know how to handle big things, there's also the question of copyright. If these displays fit the legal definition of works of art, then they need an author's official release of rights through WP:OTRS. This process is a huge nuisance, which I've seen fail a few times, which is why I've never tried it myself. Artists can upload their own works of art to WP:Wikimedia Commons, surrendering artistic rights as we Wikiphotographers do, or post them on their own website with rights clearly, prominently, and permanently forsaken. - As a digression, yeah, I've found the whole OTRS process extremely frustrating. I've gone through a few cycles of having the owners of something wanting wikipedia to be able to use an image, and putting them in touch with OTRS, only to have it go nowhere because the intellectual property owner couldn't figure out how to properly phrase their statement in a way that satisfied the OTRS folks. Now, I realize the OTRS folks are volunteers, and just doing the best they can, but the end result was I ended up not being able to use a photo I took. I've basically stopped bothering to go through OTRS because it's not worth the effort. If somebody objects to a photo I took, it gets taken down. Which I think is a shame, but I just can't devote that much effort to such a low-probability-of-success process when there's so much other work I could be doing. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:34, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

- RoySmith, I did actually have one recent subject navigate OTRS without a hitch (fingers crossed lol) in minutes to upload what was clearly a selfie that had been used in other places on the net. So, yes, it can be done! But I'm frantically worried about this photo used in multiple articles on multiple languages and which is a Featured Picture, which means it'll eventually be slotted on the main page, and the Chinese scientist who uploaded it at my request needs to go through multiple levels of bureaucracy in order to do anything, plus has a language barrier. It's been months since I asked her to go to OTRS, and there's a volunteer at OTRS who is watching for her request, but still. —valereee (talk) 17:33, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

If you're interested, there's a script called Cat-a-lot that will actually automate the majority of category edits if you're changing a category to a subcategory. Establishments in New York City categories[edit]

- Please go ahead, and thank you for checking in with me so that we don't duplicate efforts! I don't have any intention to work on "18xx establishments in New York City" categories. Those categories will be more complicated than the their 20th century counterparts. For example - does a 1825 establishment outside of Manhattan (say in Queens, or Staten Island) fall into "1825 establishments in New York City"? Not an issue that I want to wrangle. After I run out of 20th century establishments in New York City, I might go through the 20th century disestablishments in New York City. --HugoHelp (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well, 1898 (the consolidation was Jan 1) and 1899 establishments would be done the same way as the 20th century. I'm thinking specifically of Zeta Psi which was founded in 1847 at NYU, which itself was founded in NYC (first classes for NYU were near the then city hall for NYC) in 1825. And to answer your question, an 1825 founding in Staten Island does *not* belong in the same category as NYU which was formed in that city. I'd actually say its similar to the fact that something founded in Ankara in 1900 would go into 1900 establishments in the Ottoman Empire, not 1900 establishments in Turkey.Naraht (talk) 22:28, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
