Hi[edit]

Welcome. There are a couple of pages which contain your name. Go to the article about you (the page will be blank) and then click 'What links here' on the left of that page. Tintin (talk) 11:52, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recurring Aubrey-Maturin character list[edit]

Nice job on making that list more complete. --Joelmills 18:20, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indian Rebellion of 1857[edit]

I don't think I reverted any of your changes Suresh - just those by the anonymous user with the caste fixation. Sikandarji 10:24, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your changing the name of Ishwari ""Pandey/Prasad"[edit]

Almost all the literature that I know refers to "Ishwari Pandey" and to the fact that the mutineers were for that reason collectively referred to as "Pandies". You can read e.g. "The Great Mutiny" by Malleson (Rupa, 2005, Delhi), who was stationed at that time at Calcutta. You can also have a look at: http://www.chapatimystery.com/archives/univercity/the_trial_of_mangal_pandey_i.html http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050911/asp/calcutta/story_5223117.asp

If I am not seriously mistaken, you can also consult Tapti Roy's "Politics of a popular uprising: Bundelkhand in 1857". Anyway, I request you not to delete information just arbitrarily. If you go through the Talk page you will see that I have done a lot of neutral, editing work on that page. So please treat others also as if they can be neutral. If you have any doubts, you could surely put them on the Talk page, especially after my reverting the name back to Pandey. --Raj 17:13, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - no offense intended but so far I have seen very few books indeed that say Ishwari Pandey, and what mention I've seen has mostly been on blogs. Do you have a cite from something like Kaye & Malleson, or (something that I saw in bookshops when "The Rising" was released, but can't find in my collection right now) the transcript of Mangal Pandey's interrogation and trial [by a jury that appeared to consist entirely of his peers, indian soldiers from the regiment, as it happens].

Quizzing in India[edit]

Pl. sign in on talkpages using ~~~~, else it becomes difficult to know who is saying what. My reversions were to do with the undeletion of the cats etc. as almost all the edits reverted were done by anons whose actions did not appear to be in good faith. Feel free to undo my revert, but do retain the cats. --Gurubrahma 07:29, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A quick question. Is the Saarang main quiz "widely recognized as the best in the country" as mentioned ? Tintin 14:28, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is one of the best, for sure. And it has been around (as have the other IIT quizzes) for far more than most of the wannabe quizzes around. srs 15:23, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question on notability[edit]

Do you know if Shine.Ravindra (which redirects to User:Shineravindra now) is a person of any significance. The page has all the hallmarks of a vanity page created by a non-entity, but as it says something about him being "a technical authority of Internet technologies and the Linux User group administrator of Dubai", I thought you would know if he is notable. Tintin (talk) 09:57, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

never heard of him, sorry. Notable - i havent stuck my userinfo into a wikipedia page yet and i guess i'm a bit notable. As for attending oecd organized meetings - they do a whole lot of meetings, and invite many attendees, and even more speakers. Without knowing which meeting where .. dunno, sorry. Anyway the guy sounds like a legend in his own mind, and its a self edit, which wikipedia doesnt really like I guess?
Thank you. Tintin (talk) 14:13, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tipu Sultan[edit]

I'll try - but you know how easily these things get out of hand. Mind you, once they see I'm British perhaps both sides will settle their differences and turn on me! I have a few books on Tipu: Mohibbul Hasan's Tipu Sultan (originally published in 1951 but still in print as it is a classic account). Hasan worked at the University of Calcutta, Aligarh and was the first Professor of History at Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi: he also published an edition of a Persian account of Tipu Sultan's embassy to Constantinople (The Waqai-i Manazil-i Rum) and his work is widely respected. I also have a copy of State and Diplomacy under Tipu Sultan, a book of essays edited by Irfan Habib, which I think is referred to somewhere on the page but not properly cited. I will do what I can with these. Sikandarji 13:25, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I notice that you are not around much these days. There is some discussion at the moment about how good Ankit Fadia is at Talk:Ankit_Fadia#Article_coming_under_attack and User talk:Aksi great. There has been a revert war and one or two bans already. When you come back, if this is still hot, can you please comment on this. Tintin (talk) 12:58, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not much time to waste on that twit or on edit wars .. he's a fraud with good PR behind him is all

License tagging for Image:Havana Bay (novel).jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Havana Bay (novel).jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:04, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Atul Chitnis / AfD[edit]

God knows, I don't particularly like the man. And there's no shortage of controversy and not a few mailing list flamewars around him including a very long one I had with him some years back. But one thing he definitely is - is notable in India for the reasons User:CheNuevara mentioned besides having been around the Internet and BBS scene for several years now. Speedy keep, with possible edits to concentrate on what he is notable for (linux, bbs, the comversations column, the foss.in conference) rather than information about where he went to college and what his favorite bands are. srs 17:21, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

I just wanted to say that I'm really impressed with your willingness to, right up front and without prompting, declare your bias on a subject, and your subsequent ability to make a completely reasonable and objective decision notwithstanding. That shows extraordinary self-awareness, something that is very often lacking from Wikipedia discussions, particularly on AfD. In my opinion, it is what makes an exemplary Wikipedian.
Cheers. - Che Nuevara 17:31, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Indian Rebellion of 1857 (again)[edit]

Hey, could you please have a look in here and comment?
I'm really getting to my wit's end with these hyper-nationalist kids. It seems that with everything I say they respond with 'LOL ur a evil British imperialist'...--Josquius 09:53, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WTF[edit]

Is it your intention to piss me off everyday? You are doing a very good job of it too. DemolitionMan 14:45, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but things could be worse - I could be a janitor. DemolitionMan 06:37, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Only a sad loser janitor would think that being a janitor is better than being banned from wikipedia. LOL. Why you so bitter? Were you so incompetent that they fired you as a janitor too? —Preceding unsigned comment added by DemolitionMan (talkcontribs) 10:04, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Indian rebellion, Demolitionman, etc...[edit]

Hey, my editing is going to be spotty for the next week but good luck with hopefully getting things sorted. I will be back for next weekend at the latest.
One thing that may be of interest is DM's man pissing all over the 3RR today. I need to sleep so I can't fill in the report but if you feel like it you could- I'm a bit unsure, he does deserve it but given I'm trying mediation that could really make it look like I'm actually wanting a fight with him.--Josquius 21:24, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, seems possible. There was a edit just before I went away for the week by a new account called 'Davidg4122' which seemed to be heading that way. He's a amateur though and the admins are already on to him so I suppose I hope he does try, he'll just dig an even bigger hole for himself--Josquius 10:44, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done, feel free to do it yourself in the future. It was just a idea.
Darn this is annoying, actually improving the article is becoming an impossibility with those people on the warpath. The problem with it being properly sourced is by picking and choosing you can have sources say anything. Simply adding in another sourced bit on top of that about the rebels being bad would look rather messy. I think that section goes into too much detail on such a minor issue- a few rebels did help out their commanders. It doesn't mention though all those who didn't so it makes it look like the norm in a round about way.--Josquius 14:48, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: your message[edit]

I won't pretend to be surprised! --RFBailey 02:54, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:RFAR[edit]

It appears someone filed an Arbitration case, to which you are named as a party: WP:RFAR#Indian Rebellion of 1857. I'm uninvolved in this, but you may wish to make a statement in the case. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 19:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your most recent request for arbitration. I have had to edit it some to follow the prescribed format for the arbitration page, as contained in Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Request template to open a new case. If you file any arbitration requests in the future, please do your best to follow this format. Cbrown1023 talk 20:19, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
