MU WUH-SFO

I have readded it with a source stating that it is the same plane, same flight number (and passengers originating from WUH going to SFO do not get off plane or change aircraft at PVG). I would still discuss it though. WHU

Wuhan University is a Chinese university with historical and cultural importance, that is why I think contents added to this article should be especially deliberated. For example, Yellow Crane Tower may be notable, but that doesn't mean it's important enough to have a long paragraph from the article China. To list all those rankings from 2002 is obviously against WP:WEIGHT. What's more, both Wu Shulian and CUAA rankings, their methodologies are fairly opaque. Wu Shulian has listed Zhejiang Uni as the top university of China for many years, that must be a great joke. So they may be notable, but they're not reliable.

If you carefully examined my edits, you'll find I not only remove some content, but also updated the data, and added a link to the current president Li Xiaohong. You yourself removed legit and useful content added by other editors, too. To be polite is important, but to improve the article is more important. If you feel offended, I apologize. I apologize again that I didn't start this discussion earlier. Yes, I'm Chinese and as you know, I'm not fluent in English. But I prefer to leave the message in English so that other English wikipedians can also understand our conversations.

I admit I am somtimes tendentious, but I have never edited pages purely on my own judgment. I know that all rankings have their shorts, but it is precisely because their popularity do they attract criticism. However, that's not the point. According to Alexa, the site shanghairanking.com is ranked 47,090th globally[1], cuaa.net 636,424th[2]. Overlook also that most pages of cuaa.net are NOT directly related to university rankings. It's very clear that their influence are not at the same level. Wu Shulian has not even an official site. The search results on Baidu are meaningless, since many results are from blogs and forums.

To introduce an university and a kindergarten with the same length in one single article is not neutral. In fact, you will see that no kindergarten appears in articles about cities, although some kindergarten may be notable itself. If you insist to put Wu Shulian and cuaa rankings in the WHU article, I suggest to keep only the rankings in 2014. Or, remove all the rankings.--Huang Jinghai (talk) 02:47, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

I think it would be better if you can clear your doubts first, either by getting help on the thread you mentioned or finding a source (a paper or a book) that can back up your contentions, than go directly editing the page, since you seemed not certain about this yourself.--Howchou (talk) 04:58, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Actually, I'm fairly sure of this. I studied Chinese in both high school and college and I've been nerding phonetics for close to a decade. I recognize [xu] and [xɤ], but [xan] sounds wrong. And I'm saying that as someone who grew up with Russian, which has very clear [xa] syllables. There's also this this pointer in Standard Chinese phonology. The source[3] you gave in your edit comment isn't a reliable one.

Revert at Wuhan if you feel you're in the right, but I'm not sure it's the best pronunciation guide.

The source might be unreliable, but I did find other source pointing at the same direction. What I hope to clarify here is, if you can find a source to buttress your finding, that would be perfect. But if not, Wikipedia is probably not the best place for an original idea. "Some speakers pronounce it [h]." I can make the exact opposite argument, arguendo, saying that "other people pronounce it [x]." My personal experience with the pronunciation of "Wuhan" is [wuxan] because it is a location name, not just any noun, and it tends to be pronounced more clearly. I would recommend you finding a native Chinese speaker and ask him/her how to pronounce "Wuhan," and see if it is [wuxan] or [wuhan].--Howchou (talk) 11:42, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Please refrain from linking Wuhan University's origins to the Ziqiang Academy established in 1893. This historical association is currently a subject of significant national controversy, including objections from within the university's own faculty. While some individual rankings might label these institutions as "research universities" for ranking classification purposes, these designations lack a standardized, well-recognized, and due process of evaluation and are therefore arbitrary. I just redirect all but one of the departments of that university: they are rarely notable in their own right, and these articles had no secondary coverage that made them notable.
