Tahoe

I was the one who inserted all those empty sections into the tahoe article. I had hoped that knowlagable readers would fill the sections in. I wanted the article to be as detailed as possible. Hi Hike, I haven't been visiting Wikipedia much lately, but I just got your message, and John T. Alfors is my father, and I did receive permission to post his photos under the GFDL license (there are a few others in there of his). At some point, somebody went through and changed the way I had written it (from the old template), but my understanding is that even though it's the GFDL license, there can still be a credit attached.

I notice you're interested in the Tahoe area - I have some desolation wilderness photos if you're interested. my talk page --Aion 02:51, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

minor planets

Hi Hike! Seems we've both gone and attacked the minor planets at the same time :-) I have to sign off for now, but that article sure could use a cleanup. I'm thinking of throwing out those main belt IIb asteroid etc categories as i've never heard of them and they'll probably never get an article either. They also seem to be missing a group below 2.3 AU, and are overlapping with groups like the Pallas asteroids etc. etc. Ugh what a mess. Deuar 16:46, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Hike395, I am not sure if you would appreciate a nomination for Mop+Bucket. Would that be onerous for you? I am well aware that public scrutiny is not pleasant for many of us, me included. Please do not worry if you are not ready to answer; I am taking this action at the request of others, namely Taxman. If you were to agree then I would simply be following the actions templated by BD2412. I would also be relying on their advice to ensure a reasonable chance at success for the outcome of RFA/you. Shasta Pics

Hi 395. Do you have any better pictures of Shasta to replace the ones currently in the article, which are none too good, IMO. I'd put one up but have nothing but public access now. Hope you are doing OK or better.

Thanks for the suggestion--I completely forgot about the commons. I'm glad to see you are keeping Wikipedia at arm's length and hopefully getting something of a break. I've been doing the same. It's too easy to use up lots of time here. BTW, I had a great, short trip up McGee creek this fall, to McGee pass and back. If you haven't been there, I'm sure you'd like it.

Yes, in September actually--the aspens were just starting then. The trail does kind of a big right turn as you approach Baldwin and becomes really great as you approach Red Slate and the pass. From the SE ridge on Red Slate you can see all those twisted metamorphics in the Mt Morrison/Laurel Mt/Convict creek area and its really nice. Let me see if I can find the pictures I think I took.

FYI

The reason I reverted a couple of edits to Sierra Club is that their intent was to, backhandedly, include a personal reference for the purpose of harassment. The editor who has been adding the material is user:Jonah Ayers, who has been permanently blocked for harassing other editors.[1] If other editors want to make a good faith effort on the material I have no objection. -Will Beback 22:51, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, but worse yet, think about how many miles of hiking and climbing you're going to have to do to see all the things described in them! Gotta use 'em if you buy 'em!

P.S. Correction on the above re: McGee. The trail makes a big right-hand turn as you approach Red and White Mtn, near Big McGee Lake, not as you approach Baldwin. Had 'em mixed up in my mind. Big McGee Lake and beyond is superb country. Jeeb 16:04, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

(US) in article titles

Hi, Beland.. Please note that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (acronyms)#Acronyms as disambiguators explicitly states that (US) or (UK) is the preferred disambiguator for article titles (and only article titles). We had an extensive discussion about it at Wikipedia Talk:Naming conventions (acronyms).

I'm afraid that, by doing those extensive moves, you've altered the policy without discussing it first. Could you kindly move them back? If you'd like to restart the conversation at that Talk page, you can, but out of courtesy, I would notify the people involved in the discussion.

The release is fine. I'm a member of the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce plus the director of the Mineral County Chamber Anne Palmer (304) 788-1325 never copyrighted it. Asteroid masses

Hi Hike, I've noticed you've updated the mass estimates in Asteroids - this has been an ambiguous issue in the past because of several references which give widely differing estimates (in particular, NASA gives 2.3e21 kg [3] and Pitjeva estimates ~3e21 kg). Whatever we choose, it then follows on to a variety of asteroid articles which say "asteroid 123 Foo comprises x% of the mass in the belt..." etc. If you're interested in more details, you might want to check out the discussion at Talk:1 Ceres#mass reference is gibberish, and maybe add an opinion! :-) Deuar 19:32, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Kriging, geostatistics, etc.

Greetings! Yes, I'm aware of the situation; about a week ago I tried to recruit support here [4] , hoping we might have a geostatistician on the project. My knowledge of geostatistics is purely practical, e.g. using kriging to estimate contaminant concentrations (and I find it quite reliable); unfortunately I don't have more than the most general understanding of the mathematics underlying it. You're doing the right thing in pursuing the WP:NOR, WP:V and WP:NPOV angles, and I'll help you there. Antandrus (talk) 22:45, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I think that geostatistics and kriging are in an OK NPOV state as they are (at least as of the minute I write this; that may change). I will revert them if they acquire any POV accretions, at least any that make my own POV buzzer to sound; it's possible (ever the optimist am I) that he may add NPOV material to them. Both articles could use some more detail from a geostatistician who is not on a crusade to undermine the entire field, of course. As of leaving the sampling variogram and spatial dependence articles as they are with a POV tag--yes, that's a way to do it; there's plenty of that on Wikipedia already. Most of the time it's because an expert on one field or another has not yet come along to fix something up.

Nice work on High Sierra Trail ... reminds me to start planning for the summer hiking season. That's a much nicer thought than training intransigent editors on NPOV, no? Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 15:01, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
