xocoatl[edit]

Look, I agree with everything you're writing except the "failed verification" part. I own the Molina dictionary and have worked with the language a bit, and I work with 16th century sources as my scholarly project. Everything you've written is correct. The derivation of "chocolate" is a great big mess, but them saying "bitter" versus "sour" is actually a minor point of usage. As it happens, the dictionary I've been using of 16th century spanish usage does list "bitter" as one of the last definitions of "agria". Its 16th century usage that matters since words change their meanings and usage over time. FYI here's some of the cacao related vocabulary from the Molina dictionary. Note the definition for xocoatl.:
