Balinese Hinduism

Hello Gunkarta. I saw your contributions to the Hinduism in Indonesia page. I am currently working on a research paper for Graduate school that will be looking into Balinese Hinduism. Do you know of any good resrouces (books, online, whatever)? The only problem is that I can only read English! I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks! Only english..? well that's a problem. Most of Balinese religious scripts or Hindu Balinese education textbooks is provided by "Dinas Pendidikan Provinsi Bali" (the Education Council of Bali province government), unfortunately it usually only available in Bali and most them are written in Indonesian or even Balinese language. Most of Bali travel and tourism books often provides a glimpse of Balinese Hindu ceremonies, traditions and festivals; yet it lacks of depth of the subjects and lack of authority to explain religious concept. One of the most comprehensive and authorized Balinese Hinduism online source is the authoritative Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia and to lesser extent Babad Bali.com. Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia is the most authoritative Hindu Balinese Council in today Indonesia, however (unfortunately) the site also written in Indonesian language. Hope that help. Sunda Kingdom

If there isnt an article that has the details - there should be text in the main part of the new category (ie something like the Sundanese Kingdom existed between xxxx and xxxx ) - as there have been some marvellous inventions about Sundanese history and culture over time on WP en - you might help by putting dates - and an aka - Sundanese Kingdom - reads better in english.. cheers SatuSuro 13:54, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Well.., I reluctant to call them as "inventions", probably more as new "interpretations". It has to be supported by references (inscriptions, manuscripts, or interpretation by historians such as Pleyte, Soekmono or Ayatrohaedi) to be reliable and presentable. The problem with the word "Sunda" is there is actually a kingdom named "Prahajyan Sunda" (Kingdom of Sunda) (as mentioned in Sanghyang Tapak inscription, and Sunda later become the name of Sundanese ethnics group. In Javanese counterpart, never actually a kingdom named "Java Kingdom", Java always associated with Java island or Javanese people. Javanese Kingdom could be Medang, Kediri (historical kingdom), Singhasari, Majapahit, or even Mataram Sultanate. If you refer to "Sundanese Kingdom" (kingdom of Sundanese people), it may also cover Tarumanagara and Galuh as well, to some extent also may include Banten and Cirebon sultanate. While Sunda actually originated as "Sundapura" the name of the palace or capital in Tarumanagara era, later after the decline of Tarumanagara, it become the name of the kingdom on west bank of Citarum river while the east bank of Citarum river is identify as Galuh (read Tarumanagara and Sunda Kingdom for detail). Later both twin kingdoms (Sunda and Galuh) is unified and identified as single entity Sunda kingdom. I would like to identify Sunda kingdom as post Tarumanagara kingdom in Western Java, and pre-Banten and Cirebon Sultanate. I would like to separate and differ the term "Sunda kingdom" and "Sundanese kingdom" (Gunkarta (talk) 16:53, 2 August 2010 (UTC)).

The answer to you both is that there are reliable english sources for the ethnographic descirption of these beliefs (and 'beasties') from the dutch era, and from early indonesia area - by such writers as koentjaraningrat 'Javanese culture' and a range of other written (as opposed to web based material) source - and having done fieldwork in central java - I also have a very large bibliograpghy (somewhere) of the all the javanese language materials from about 30 to 40 years ago on these items - but I aint gonna be able to uncover them in the short term - probably the most useful item if you are able to access high quality libraries with good materials - would be NANCY K. FLORIDA, Javanese literature in Surakarta manuscripts; Volume 2; Manuscripts of the Mangku- nagaran palace - as the Mn library has a brilliant selection of the tales - but it is a tortuous trail to find the good indexes/lists of the articles, and even more difficult to find the relevant articles - but they do exist - I have about 150 somewhere - but not accessible for a long time - sorry SatuSuro 10:57, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Motto

Dear Gunkarta,

You have just deleted a change I had introduced regarding the language status of the Indonesian motto. I am not an Indonesian native speaker, not even very good at it and, as far as Javanese is concerned I can only say "ngomong jowo", what happens to be entirely to be wrong. Looking at the WP article on Indonesia, I was surprised to see the motto presented as Javanese: it is well known that Javanese and Dutch were rejected as a possible national language in the 1920's and as Indonesia does not consider itself a colonial empire ruled by Java Island... Actually I am a native French speaker. So I checked in my Indonesian-French dictionnary (Labrousse) and did not find there any hint of a possible Javanese origin of "Bhinneka tunggal ika": - the three words together are displayed as a single entry, explained as the Indonesian national motto and translated; - bhinneka and ika are presented each separately, translated and said to be borrowed from Sanskrit; - tunggal is translated without any etymological details (what means that it is not borrowed from Sanskrit, Sundanese, Javanese, Arabic, Dutch... and is a pure Malayo-Polynesian words. Therefore it is difficult for me to consider that my change was entirely wrong. As you seem to be proficient in Javanese culture, it is difficult for me to fancy that I can be right against you. First of all Old Javanese (Kawi language) is quite different than modern Javanese language, yet bears soo much similarity and resemblences. Yes, Kawi borrowed much of its vocabulary from Sanskirt, but the remnat of Austronesian language vocabularies still can be found. Yet to state Bhinneka Tunggal Ika as purely sanskirt origin is truly false. Read the article Bhinneka Tunggal Ika for details. Bhinneka: Varied, Tunggal: One, Ika: That. Thank you for your answering quickly. However your answer does not absolutely match myassumptions, for I never pretended the motto being borrowed from Sanskit, but being Indonesian and using three Indonesian words out of which bhinneka and ika are borrowed from Sanskrit and tunggal is Austronesian. My question was: is the word "tunggal" the same in Kawi and in Indonesian?
If I combine the piece of information from my dictionnary and the quotation of the old poem in the article Bhinneka tunggal ika, the answer seems to be yes. But is it politically wise to emphasize the Javanese origin of the motto?

Prambanan Plain

Having lived next to Sambisari - I do not think it belongs and bordering the Kedu Plain on northwest - either that needs a damned good reference... I would disagree - Merapi slopes and other things get in the way

Sumatran ethnic groups

Hi, there are definitely sub-divisions of Indonesian ethnic groups, but there is no 'suku Padang', for sure. Maybe it's just supposed to be the city of Padang, but I don't see why they don't mark other major cities too.Sumbuddi (talk) 19:55, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

The 'Batak' label is better now, but it doesn't enter Simalungun or Mandailing. Maybe you could make it 'Batak Peoples', or perhaps mark the border of 'tanah Batak' with a black line. Also I think approximately the northwest corner of the area marked 'Rejang' should be Kerinci, extending into part of the area marked 'Jambi' (this should be mostly Malay - no 'suku Jambi'). Sumatra

I must confess to having doubts, as Haji is a Moslem title given to a successful pilgrim to Mecca - not a king, but the article states that the monarchy didn't convert till the 13th C. The name of Haji Sumatrabhuji is tagged as needing citation - one by me just now before I looked back through the history, and the other possibly by XoXo. My involvement with this stems from a question elsewhere - where someone quoted the article to try to show that Sumatra was named after King thingy. I reckoned it was the other way. Indonesia football help

Hi. I remembered you were contributing to the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup article so I thought you could help with an Indonesian football related issue. Jason de Jong was on trials with Sriwijaya, and Filipino news sources claimed he already signed with them and I also put in the article that he signed for them. But apparently he wasn't able to get a contract and I would like to re-edit the article but I'm having a bit of a tough time due to the language of the sources, even with translations. Mainly the articles number 1, 2, and 3 of Sriwijaya post tell the optimism that Sriwijaya FC will sign Jason. However in article no. 4 after the tryout the coach Kolev personally express his dislike to de Jong, I don't know what is it precisely about, only the coach express his dissapointment and Sriwijaya FC need a better quality foreign players (probabaly the quality is similar to Indonesian local players, so it is too expensive/not worth it to sign these players). The last articles mentioned that Kolev send home all four tryout foreign players: de Jong and other three Korean players. So I think Jason failed to have Sriwijaya FC contract. The first article stated that if Sriwijaya FC sign Jason de Jong and he agree with the contract, it is possible that he will replace Mu Yong Jie (Mu Yong Jie currently signed for Sriwijaya FC, if another foreign player were signed, Mu's contract will not be extended). Peta Jakarta pada saat kerusuhan Mei 1998

I was wondering if you would be able to SVG trace a map of Jakarta during the May 1998 riots of Indonesia. Crisco 1492 sent me a digital copy of a Tempo article which has a pretty detailed map. Some tips to help you out!

Hi Gunkarta, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Gunkarta/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Something to make your life easier!

Hi there Gunkarta! I've just come across one of your articles, and noticed that you might appreciate some help with references.

You might want to consider using this tool - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well. Happy editing! Indonesia

Hi Gunkarta ! I have noticed you are from Indonesia and you seem to be a sport fan.

Can I ask you if you support Indonesia in all sports, and in particular in Olympic sports? The best thing would be also in sports in which Indonesia is not so good at, but still have athletes at international level
