This was not a test and was a genuine edit. Sorry for the confusion — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felepeer (talkcontribs) 19:30, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

I was in the process of adding a URL and my source said different about the appearances - the edit was far from nonsense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felepeer (talkcontribs) 19:56, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

I don't understand what I have done wrong apart from misquote the appearances, my block of text about his brace was all correct with the correct pages attached.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felepeer (talkcontribs) 19:59, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

I didn't mess up the info box, stats I did mess up - thx for rectifying and the paragraph was notable, I don't understand how it is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Felepeer (talkcontribs) 20:04, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

I have seen regularly on many other footballers pages regular goals mentioned - I'm sorry if you don't agree with that - apologies for the info box formatting badly as well Felepeer (talk) 20:08, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Nimmmad

Hi GS. @Nimmmad: is still at: [1] They were previously blocked for 48 hours last year. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 10:13, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks! Robby.is.on (talk) 10:49, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

No subject is automatically or inherently notable merely because it exists [n.b. in this instance, "because it happened"].

A guideline which states that "Some things are inherently notable" is plain incorrect, and correcting this in the most minimal way possible is not a material change. If you have a better idea for an improvement, please do explain. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 21:13, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

As I said, I really don't want to have to start an RfC over a single word change. Correcting a clearly incorrect statement shouldn't be controversial. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 22:06, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Do not remove the listing, which is valid. If you're going to edit erratically I will raise the whole debacle at ANI. GiantSnowman 22:14, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: You are surely aware that listing it at WP:FOOTBALL appears like blatant canvassing, right? RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 22:15, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Please actually read WP:CANVASS - and stop removing my talk page posts if you are not doing to relocate them. You state you want to keep the discussion in one place but are not doing that! GiantSnowman 22:17, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Do I need to give you as example the dozens of footballer AfDs where WP:FOOTBALL members consistently and almost predictably vote "Keep passes NFOOTY"? Whether it is or isn't canvassing, it certainly appears like it. And my (and other people's) problems with NSPORTS are for more general than simply football and far predate the latest example which you incorrectly seem to think is my sole motivation. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 22:32, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
And if you do that I'll be able to give you dozens of examples where a player has passed NFOOTBALL but been deleted due to failing GNG. There are loads of AFDs like that... GiantSnowman 20:54, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
And isn't it problematic that many editors who should know better keep doing this despite the players clearly not meeting inclusion criteria? And then, of course, any attempt to change any guideline to avoid that kind of silliness gets met with resistance under reasons as fanciful as "but [insert other criteria] is also broken" or the call to panic that getting rid of it altogether will make the problem worse (which other solutions are left?)... IP changing colors in navbox

Hi. Please, could you have a look at the contributions of this user? He is changing colors in the navboxes of several national football teams (cross-wiki), and it's not the first time in action. Don't know if you already went through his contributions. Cheers. --GC85 (talk) 09:25, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

The changes I saw seemed good to me… Robby.is.on (talk) 09:44, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
@GC85 and Robby.is.on: where is the disruption? GiantSnowman 14:31, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
He is changing unilaterally all the colors in the navboxes and I don't know based on which criteria. Other users also complained about that (see here and in his talk) and the user is never giving a motivation. To me, some changes could even be useful, but done in a not collaborative and write only way is not good. --GC85 (talk) 14:43, 22 January 2022 (UTC)
This is essentially a content dispute. Again - what/where is the disruption? Is the IP edit warring/editing against consensus? GiantSnowman 14:47, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, If you don't mind me asking what constitutes a reliable source? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Football/Links#Players_by_club I know it says that they do not all qualify as reliable sources. Icelandic names

Hi, regarding Special:Diff/1069039952 – the English Wikipedia norm is to refer to Icelandic persons with their given name, as they typically don't have a real surname. This is something I originally learned to do by editing English Wikipedia. (: See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Country-specific usage and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Subsequent use. Ethan Coleman

I wrote this article on Saturday, which you deleted, with no explanation or communication, and replaced it with a version of your own, containing less information. I am unsure as to why you did this, or why you felt I did not deserve even a heads up. I then created a version including my extra information, which was sourced, plus some elements of your version. You have now reverted my additions, and I'd like an explanation as to why I'm apparently not allowed to edit this article. Your edit summary "rv to last good version" was one I found very rude and not a little insulting. Can you elaborate on which elements of my input were not good? Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:27, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

I have also had problems with his account deleting my edits on certain pages, and then replacing them with their own which were same as the original?! Seems he likes to take ownership of certain pages and deletes anything that he didn’t upload. Liverpool445 (talk) 21:18, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

@Liverpool445: any examples please? GiantSnowman 21:35, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
I don't consider deleting my version and replacing it with yours, directly from your userspace, a merge. You merged the histories, but you replaced every word I'd written, even slightly rewording the intro to say exactly the same thing that I'd said. You say you had a problem with two words I wrote, yet replaced the entire text. The two words you objected to, "featured regularly", were sourced at the end of that sentence. The Orient source says Coleman was a "mainstay" at King's Lynn, a word I did not care to repeat due to potential copyvio (so I paraphrased), and the guy played in 20 of their 23 matches this season, clearly featuring regularly. You seriously think that's contentious enough to replace the entire text? Why replace my entire text with your text, which contained less information, instead of simply removing the words you objected to? Like anybody else would? You say "POV like" those two words, so what else? What other POV exists in my version? You removed my table entirely, even though you then replaced it with an identical table, plus your sources. Why didn't you just add the source to my table? Why didn't you explain any of your objections in your edit summaries so that I might have understood your concerns? Respectfully, it looks a lot like you considered my edits "unsuitable" merely because they were not yours. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:37, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
But I didn't delete 'your' version - the history is there! If a source says he was a mainstay, then directly quote using quotation marks. Why didn't you source the table yourself to begin with? I'm here to collaborate, so happy to discuss a compromise on the article talk page. GiantSnowman 22:42, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
The history is there, but none of what I wrote remains in the article, the sources, nothing. I received a note on my watchlist from the deletion log, saying "G6: Deleted to make way for move". I naturally assumed that's a deletion. If quoting the article is better than using other words to say the same thing, then we can do that. Not sourcing the table was an oversight. It did not require removal, twice, just to add a source. Why didn't you just request a source? We can discuss a compromise on the talk page, yes. I planned to expand the text anyway; I just didn't have time on Saturday. Then I saw little point in expanding the text if it was not going to be allowed to remain. Bretonbanquet (talk) 23:00, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
To be fair, 'your' version also removed all the sources that I had added. This tit-for-tat is not conducive to proper collaborative editing; so I have updated the article and await your comments on the article talk page. GiantSnowman 09:34, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Disruptive editing at Albanian football articles

Hi GS. 188.164.221.8 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) has been editing disruptively at Albanian football articles for a long time. It's mainly updating caps without updating timestamps. They've been blocked a few times, most recently in November for one month. A new block would be helpful. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 10:37, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the clarification Zanoni (talk) 20:33, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I know the spells were separate, I left them separated out in the infobox, I only combined them in the Career Statistics section, where I was under the impression we take more of a year-by-year approach rather than a 'spell-by-spell' approach? I think I first saw it on the page for Wilfried Zaha, where it happens twice (2012-13 & 2014-15). Nonleagueapps (talk) 20:49, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Date format

I've noticed that you have repeatedly used DMY date format when updating Marlon Fossey's stats in the infobox instead of MDY format. I even left a note to remind you to use the appropriate date format, which you promptly both deleted and ignored with your most recent update. Please, when updating statistics within the infobox of a footballer, make sure you update the timestamp using the appropriate date format. In Fossey's case, you can do this by using {{subst:mdytime}} to create an automatic MDY timestamp. Anwegmann (talk) 22:55, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

I don't want to continue to be involved in reverting the edits of a user who I would clearly say is the player concerned. He's deleted again the whole (sourced( club section, re-added the clubs that cannot be adequately sourced and has changed DOB and height. Even sitting in bed with Covid I would rather work on other articles. I have requested page protection. Hope you had a good vacation. Zanoni (talk) 13:03, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Concerning your ANI report

You may want to consider adding editor Klõps, to your Estonia PoV pushing report. See the Leo Komarov BLP. That's at least three editors attempting to re-write history. GoodDay (talk) 22:43, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

My impression is that BM's siding with the pro-Estonian PoV & he isn't going to budge. GoodDay (talk) 20:10, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Avraham Tamir

This isn't the first or even second time I've noticed you removing and changing content of DYK articles when you don't have a single clue what you're on about - so when this is the case, instead of just changing information to something that could be wrong or misleading, you should go to the talkpage and leave a note saying something like "I don't know the specifics of this event/person/other subject, but I've noticed that X in the article might go against WP policy". DYK articles have recently been improved just to appear on the MP, so someone who knows much more than you will likely be watching and willing to answer. Kingsif (talk) 10:05, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

I know your edits are in good faith, but when on multiple occasions you assume things and try to edit in line with that, and each time someone has to swing by and correct you and the article, the pattern of behavior becomes disruptive. Asking first would be better for everyone. Kingsif (talk) 10:10, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

I see you like opening ANI threads

This is another friendly - genuinely - message. I see you like opening ANI threads, and I have not read any but the one where you accuse me of a personal attack, so I cannot comment on how valid the others are. But I have, at least for cases like our not-much-of-a-dispute, a suggestion, (which I realized is what I would have, instead of ANI, expected) after I left the comment at ANI that I am of the opinion that dragging someone to ANI over one word that even in the worst case isn't a personal attack is a massive over-escalation. I'm sure you are aware of Template:Uw-npa1, which would be more appropriate than ANI for non-persistent incivility; I suppose you're also aware that the regulars don't like to be templated, and the suggestion is to leave a personal message. That's what I've done with you, and what I would have expected if you were actually concerned about CIVIL: a new thread, with the diff link, saying you think it's uncalled for. I don't know if you've had unpleasant exchanges that now make ANI your first stop, or if you were just particularly riled today, but I hope you take this for the suggestion and olive branch it is. Kingsif (talk) 11:48, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kingsif: - no, I don't like opening ANI threads, what a ridiculous/baseless/bad faith thing to say. Makes me think you are actively trolling now, and now in no way do I think what you say above is 'genuine'. How was I supposed to leave you a message when you simply keep reverting me? And it would have fallen on deaf ears when you have double downed on it. All you had to do was say "sorry, I got annoyed, I shouldn't have said it, I won't do it again" and I would have been fine. GiantSnowman 11:56, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
Dude, it was a joke because the section two above is about an ANI. I thought making a light-hearted joke would be well-received and help to diffuse what I felt was your hostility. No, that is not backtracking, I was genuinely trying here. Your consistent accusations of bad faith don't make me confident you'll accept this, of course. (And hey, I'd appreciate a "sorry, I got upset, I shouldn't have gone to ANI", so let's call it even and please move on.) Kingsif (talk) 16:13, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
@Kingsif: - do not "dude" me, and jokes are only jokes if they are funny. You have been told at ANI not to make further comments like your original insult, so my post was clearly merited. Your attempted explanation is pathetic. Please do not post here again unless it is an apology. GiantSnowman 17:03, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Original research in Dervish-related articles

Hello!

Per [10] Heesxiisolehh agreed to stop adding OR and you told me to let you know when I notice any further issues.

Just wanted to let you know that he has already breached that agreement, and proceeded to readd original research (see here), just four days after he agreed to stop. In addition to that, he accused me of adding OR and misrepresenting sources. ([11])

Like I outlined on the report I very much doubt he is fit to edit on this encyclopedia given his history and continuing to add OR. If he won't stop after an admin explicitly tells him to, what other options are there? Gebagebo (talk) 22:55, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

@Gebagebo and Heesxiisolehh: - Gebagebo, the information looks sourced to me, what is OR exactly about it? Heesxiisolehh if this was OR then you will be indefinitely blocked in the near future OK? GiantSnowman 10:53, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Well there are several points that are original research:

1. First is him claiming that the Dervish movement started in 1895, when there is scholarly consensus that it started in 1899. For this he uses Pilgrim, preacher and pretender by Alfred Pearce, which only mentions that the tribes "regard him as a court of appeal in their tribal disputes". Nothing that remotely implies the start of the movement.

2. He's pushing the idea that the Dervishes aimed to establish a state in the Nugaal and the Nugaal only. The cited sources in that part only mention how the Nugaal was his base of operations at best, and do not mention the Mullah's intent of establishing a state. In the Shadow of Conquest only mentions an angry letter from the Mullah, Official history of the operations in Somaliland, 1901-04 only mentions Nugaal as an area where the main operations would be conducted, Horn of Africa, Volume 1, Issue 2 only mentions forts the Mullah built for his people/soldiers, Socialist Somalia: Rhetoric and Reality, The Shaping of Somali Society, The History of Somalia and Somalia, a Country Study refer to the Illig Treaty, where the Italians granted the Mullah protected status in the Nugaal among other concessions, Frontier and Overseas Expeditions from India only mentions an advance on Nugaal, and lastly Translocal Connections across the Indian Ocean: Swahili Speaking Networks on the Move only mentions the Mullah calling for jihad in the Nugaal.

Per Wikipedia rules the citations need to directly back up any claims on any article. None of the citations back up anything he has written. This seems to be WP:SYNTH territory as well since he's using half a dozen sources to come to a conclusion not supported by any of them. Gebagebo (talk) 11:57, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

@Gebagebo and Heesxiisolehh: - Gebagebo, thanks for clarifying. Heesxiisolehh, please provide an explanation as a matter of urgency. GiantSnowman 12:12, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Giantsnowman.

The discrepancy in sources between 1895 and 1899 are that the latter date is when hostilities began over armaments, but with in-line cites, I am fine with both dates. For anyone interested, these are the sources I envisioned:

1895
  • H. M. Stationery office. p. 49. "He acquired some notoriety by seditious preaching in Berbera in 1895, ... and eventually started a religious movement"
  • Faulkner, Neil (2021). Empire and Jihad, p. 339, "Returning from his final pilgrimage in 1895, he moved back to his home, Kirrit in the Dolbahanta tribal territory ... and there launched his mission to redeem Islam and reclaim Somalia"
  • Roy Irons, 2013, "In 1895 he returned to Berbera, charged with the conversion of the Somalis to the puritan doctrines which he had so deeply imbibed"

Just to preempt anyone trying to hyperbole my statements in the future, I believe Dervishes had an emphasis for Nugaal, not only. Note that the cession of Nugal was preceded by negotiations. If Dervishes negotiated for the Nugal then something you negotiate for is something you seek. The sources below use a combination of coveting, with the usage of country, state, or rule:

emphasis on Nugaal
  • Source: Empires at War: 1911-1923, Robert Gerwarth, 2014, p. 47, "Hassan, was given the Nogal valley to rule as he pleased"

Note Nugaal called a "country" and Dervishes "rejoiced" for it:

  • LIDWIEN KAPTEIJNS, 1996, p. 1 - 8 [https://org.uib.no/smi/sa/06/6Kapteijns.pdf "Sayyid used this new international recognition to realize some of his state building ambitions ... you say that you will go away from the country, that is, from the Nugaal and Buuhoodleh and their environs. At this we rejoiced greatly"

Note Dervish negotiations leading to a Nugaal-based state:

Note how Jaamac Cumar (the foremost native Dervish scholar with 120 peer reviews) singles out emphasising Dervish attachment to Nugaal with strong words of "most desired" and "indispensable" and note usage of "dalka / dalkii" meaning country:

  • Source: 2005, Jaamc Cumar Ciise, p 259, p. 128, Taariikhdii daraawiishta iyo Sayid Maxamed Cabdulle Xasan

Jaamac Cumar states similar in the 1974 book:

  • Source: Diiwaanka gabayadii, 1856-1921 - Page 152, Jaamac Cumar Ciise

There is undue weight pertaining to Dervish demographics:

Inaccurate figures of Dervish demographics

This pattern of communizing extends to individuals too, Sudi (a core Somaliland-tribe member) mentioned 4 times whilst Ismail Mire "the most important general of the dervish forces" is removed by Gebagebo from the Dervish page entirely.

Other inaccuracies introduced in 17th Feb edit

Some edits Gebagebo introduced

  • States Illig is in Somaliland when Illig is in Puntland
  • States coastal withdrawal happened in 1913, when it happened in 1910 "withdrawal be carried out on 15 March 1910"
  • Dervish control over "Burao watering places" isn't mentioned in corresponding source
  • The "engagements" section states colonist were on the offensive to capture between 1913-1920, although most sources state this period the British had a defensive policy on account of the World War; "withdrawal be carried out on 15 March 1910"
  • The intro under origins links Salahiya to "Saudi Wahhabism", although the Salihiyya page itself links it to a completely different denomination of Sufism.

I'm kinda in a hurry so I had to scribble this pretty quick, but my main gripe with Gebagebo's edits is I get the sense that his approach to sources at one time is demographically over-communizing, then followed by being over selective / restrictive, with subsequent areas I feel WP:Undue ending in a brush. Heesxiisolehh (talk) 01:26, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Most of those sources do not support what you're claiming, with you doing original analysis which should be left to secondary sources, the actual scholars. "I believe Dervishes had an emphasis for Nugaal, not only" does not explain why you have edited to reflect that the Dervishes aimed to establish a state in Nugaal only ([12], [13], [14] among others), which no source has explicitly stated.
Also regarding demographics, reliable sources state that the Dervishes were a multi-clan movement rather than a movement that is predominantly Dhulbahante (althought they made a bulk of its members), a POV you have pushed, especially early on as you introduced new terminology like "Dhulbahante fort" or "Dhulbahante garesa" to replace "Dervish fort" or become a synonym of the term, which is not only pure original research but also misusing of sources and clear POV (see [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23] just to name a few). This seems to indicate a certain bias in favour of a clan while attempting to erase the participation of other clans who were constituent parts of the movement.
As for the inaccuracies, I restored most of the page to the state it was before you added your original research, and is therefore not content that I have personally contributed myself. To address them separately,
  • Again not my text however for the sake of WP:BURDEN I have corrected that.
  • The sentence "In 1913, after the British withdrawal to the coast" is still factually correct since it does not imply that the British withdrew in 1913, but rather mentions a time period after the British withdrawal to the coast.
  • Per WP:BURDEN I added a reliable source that explicitly mentions the capture of Burao and its watering places in August 1899 (text erroneously said 1898)
  • Per WP:BURDEN I have removed that part for now and reworded the section since I could not find a reliable source to back it up. Will research this further tomorrow.
  • That is an issue that is out of scope of this topic. The source cited for this section explicitly mentions that the teachings of the founder of the Salihiyyah tariqa, Muhammad Salih, was influenced by Sheikh Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab, founder of the Wahhabi movement. Gebagebo (talk) 02:43, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
The main issue is however that you told @GiantSnowman: that you agreed to stop original research, but then resorted to original research after, breaching the agreement within quite literally four days. Gebagebo (talk) 02:43, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
@Gebagebo and Heesxiisolehh: TLDR - I don't have the time to wade through all of that. As per the latest ANI please start a RFC/DRN rather than clogging up my talk page. GiantSnowman 08:50, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Justanother2: - any evidence of that? GiantSnowman 10:49, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Ya, there will probably always be disagreements on here about where to put commas (especially in a list of more than three items). You can see how often this user has reverted edits I made. There's no middle ground it seems with this editor.Justanother2 (talk) 10:54, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Justanother2: nope, I can't see that in the edit history, and in the absence of you providing any evidence and no ongoing disruption, there is nothing to do here. GiantSnowman 10:58, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Following me to the relay article is proof. I don't know what you mean. It is very obvious.Justanother2 (talk) 11:13, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Justanother2: I presume you are referring to this? If so that is not evidence of stalking or disruptive editing. GiantSnowman 11:42, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Don't take this in an unintended manner. You have been on here a long time; you are an admin. You have seen problem editors. This user is determined to track me. They do follow, they revert some of my edits. There is no justification for such behavior. I already mentioned that not everyone on here agrees. They don't go around causing trouble though.Justanother2 (talk) 11:46, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Justanother2: you are making unsubstantiated claims about other editors. I see no evidence of what you complain of. There is no need for any admin action. GiantSnowman 11:48, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

We disagree but this is why people stop editing on here. Users like that one drive them away by whatever ways they pick. You certainly have seen people get discouraged. It's unfortunate that you don't stop the situations. Not sure how much proof you need that they look at my edits to cause a problem.Justanother2 (talk) 11:58, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

@Justanother2: you have not provided any proof. For the final time - there is no issue here. GiantSnowman 12:08, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Looked over some of the association football player bios. I think if you want "Estonian SSR", "Latvian SSR" & "Lituanian SSR" implemented where required? Hi there! May I ask you for advice regarding links in career statistics? Issues with Fodbold-fan

I have had repeated issues with user:Fodbold-fan today. He has reverted my edits to Asbjørn Gaarde now three times without explaining what issue he has with my edits. I have left two notes on his talk page, both identical (he deleted the first one without explanation), which explained why I made the edits I did and why his reverting of them was improper. I'm not sure exactly what to do at this point, as I don't want to get into an edit war with someone who clearly doesn't care about the rules or standard editing practice. I saw that you have had issues with the same user previously, so I thought I'd drop a note here to see if you had any ideas. I appreciate your help in advance. Anwegmann (talk) 21:20, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Polish Super Cup

Hi, I associate you with the project, hence the question for you. I'm a fairly new user so I have a problem. There is a Category:Polish SuperCup, but all the pages in it - including the main article - are already called "Polish Super Cup". What bot or user do I need to ask to change the category name to "Category:Polish Super Cup" and add a new category to each of the articles? Atlantico 000 (talk) 21:07, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello @GiantSnowman, Good day. I have been trying to install this script. I have installed it and refreshed my cache several times. I have installed other scripts which worked after refreshing the cache by following the instructions at the top of my JavaScript page. I am wondering, I noticed that you use that script which is the reason for asking you. Is there any other thing you did to get it to work? Thanks. Ampimd (talk) 21:47, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I am replying here a) in anticipation of others commenting both for and against my revert, so a discussion is all in one place and not spread over multiple user's talk pages and b) so that my position is here and clear, my position being this - despite my opposition to the extent of change that appears to have been found in the RFC close, I do not actually oppose how the RFC was closed. However, what I do have serious issue with those editors who were heavily involved on one 'side' of the debate effectively deciding how to implement the close, possibly to a degree that others would not. That is entirely inappropriate. The RFC closer, perhaps with assistance from truly uninvolved admins, need to be the one to decide what the new landscape looks like after the dust has settled - not anybody else, and certainly not those involved in the carnage that was that RFC! I understand your point of view, but what's the timeframe limit? Raheem Sterling moved from Jamaica to England aged five; great, so he's considered English because he moved there when he was "young". Had he moved there aged 12, would it also be young? What about 17? I'd rather have a "black and white" ruleset (one NT: write that nationality; two NTs: omit; nothing to do with birth place), rather than something subject to interpretation by different editors. Nehme1499 17:40, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Ghandour started playing internationally for Lebanon in 2015, though, aged 15; this was even before he started playing at youth level in the UK. Throughout all his playing career in the UK (be it at youth or senior level), he had already played internationally for Lebanon at some level. Nehme1499 17:52, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
Haaland and Sterling don't need to be the threshold. The answer to your question "how would the player be described if they never played international football?" would be "he wouldn't be described at all, as he was just a student before his international debut". From the moment he became relevant, he was already a Lebanese international. If the English-born players who play from a young age for Wales/Scotland/Ireland are also in the same situation as Ghandour, I'd also describe those as Welsh/Scottish/Irish. Also, I wouldn't be so sure that, had Sterling not played internationally for England, he wouldn't be described as Jamaican. Nehme1499 19:33, 14 March 2022 (UTC)
I'm not talking about hypotheticals. Of course his Charlton career has nothing to do with him playing at youth level for Lebanon. I'm just saying that, in reality, he has always been a Lebanon international. It's a very different situation to, say, Omar Bugiel, who was born in Germany as a German, and then became a Lebanese citizen in order to play for their national team. Ghandour was, effectively, always notable as a Lebanese. Also, to be clear, is your proposed B&W rule the question "what if they (hypothetically) never played internationally?" Because if so, I would amend it to "how was he effectively known before his int'l debut?" For Ghandour, the answer is N/A. For Haaland, it's obviously Norwegian. Nehme1499 19:51, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Article fails WP:GNG and former version of WP:NFOOTBALL.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Continued original research

Hello!

Sorry to bother you especially given the last time I brought this up (which led to a huge wall of text) so I'll keep this brief: Heesxiisolehh is once again adding original research/analysis as shown here. The letter he cited does not in any way "encompass and coalesce" the head or sultan of Dhulbahante position with the Dervish movement. I took the liberty to look through the actual source cited and not once is that implied. On the section regarding the British reply, James Hayes Sadler never actually explicitly stated that the letter spoke on behalf of the Dhulbahante tribe", but rather he said "In his last letter the Mullah pretends to speak in the name of the Dervishes, their Amir (himself), and the Dolbahanta tribes. This letter shows his object is to establish himself as the Ruler of the Dolbahanta, and it has a Mahdist look". That is clearly original research. It is the author of the secondary source's job to do the interpreting, not Wikipedians.

Given the last time I brought up this issue I honestly don't see nor expect him to stop this in any way. He's quite literally rewriting Somali history with his original analysis, not to mention blatantly disregarding the agreement you reached with him as well as the consensus reached here. Twente FC honor

Hey GS. Hope I don't disturb your work, but I noticed that FC Twente got an UEFA Intertoto Cup honor listed on their article. As fast as I know, group winners didn't win any trophy, did they??? By that logic, all those small clubs in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 should get to have an international honor on their article?? That kind of doesn't seem right.. When I look at the other clubs, they don't have their group stage wins as an honor, as those three editions had an outright winner. Only the outright winners are listed on List of UEFA club competition winners as well. Idk who added it, and I know you guys had lots of discussions about what constitute an honor, but is this something you could look into? Cheers! Speun (talk) 14:34, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Can you please lend a hand here GS? Situation getting out of hand, these IPs keep adding this nonsense in infoboxes (they did the same in António Lima Pereira and Tibi (footballer), for example), when we're not even supposed to link countries. There is also a Lithuanian user that does the same, User:Normantas Bataitis; IPs are from Lisbon, so most likely they're not the same person, but stranger things have happened...

A tag has been placed on Great Britain Olympic football team (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

There is presumed notability for football teams if they play in the National Cup - I cannot see that it applies here, and the club appears to fail WP:GNG. GiantSnowman 13:42, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
What do you mean, presumed notability? Is there a guideline somewhere that says that? –dlthewave 13:46, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
The very old Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Notability#Club notability. GiantSnowman 13:56, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Ok, that project essay says "Per Wikipedia:Notability (sports)#Teams, teams are required to meet the general notability guideline. The following guidance may indicate at what level teams generally have enough coverage to meet the GNG." You probably shouldn't be using it to advise editors that there is "presumed notability". –dlthewave 14:31, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
"The following guidance may indicate at what level teams generally have enough coverage to meet the GNG" = "presumed notability". At no point do I say it is 'automatic'. GiantSnowman 14:42, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Those terms are not generally understood to mean the same thing and there was community consensus to replace the latter with the former. To avoid causing confusion, I would suggest that you use the consensus language when advising other editors and refrain from conflating the two, even if they mean the same thing in your mind. –dlthewave 15:10, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
I'm unaware of any community consensus related to FOOTYN, so I will continue the words I chose. Do not try and police me on my own talk page. GiantSnowman 15:30, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
For the record, I'm not new and not easily confused by Wikipedia, so the point you're making Dlthewave is pretty moot. CUPIDICAE💕 15:32, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Giantsnowman, I'm not sure why you would be referring to a project essay instead of the actual guideline in the first place. –dlthewave 15:47, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
Because you asked for the relevant guideline, I pointed you to it. GiantSnowman 16:13, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
FOOTYN is not a guideline. NSPORTS is the relevant guideline. –dlthewave 16:29, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Request

I've changed a name of a template, so these cats need a move. I can't move as I'm not an admin and nor am I a page mover. Yesterday, somebody requested a move but no admin has had the will to.

In addition, I ask you to move this category as "players" is better than "footballers".

I suggest you use WP:CFDS for these type of requests - although the 'Fuenlabrada footballers' should be a WP:CFD (which I would support). GiantSnowman 17:50, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Accounts

Hi Gian Snowman, This is concerning user: FFCETT77. I come to you here as you have reverted this edit 4 years ago. The editor whose has mentioned their has a few accounts in Wikipedia in this his user page and one of them is User talk:JE77FFC and the other is when their are 8yo. Looking at the older account JE77FFC, the editor had only 8 edits and some of them are unsourced, a few disruptive but nothing major. I doubt FFCETT77 understand that having a few account might not be advisable but I dont think he used it for sock purposes. My question is that would be better to delete his old account and let them keep the newest one as from their edits, they have made effort of creating article and learning about editing Wikipedia. This was what they wrote on my my talk page. Kindly advise. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 10:53, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Clean start applies, I believe. No concerns from me if all former accounts have been abandoned. GiantSnowman 17:03, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you GiantSnowman and will info the editor accordingly. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 00:02, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Vandalism and false information re. Borislav Stevanovic

Stevanović was born in Kosovska Mitrovica then Serbia, then Yugoslavia in 1975 before the city changed its name to Titova Mitrovica (after the death of Tito in 1980, the former Communist dictator). Those are the historical facts. Shermanpalicad (talk) 11:12, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Anna Nicole Smith page

I noticed your Wikipedia editing is not correct and constructive. You apparently bear a grudge against me, vindictiveness because you constantly deleted historical facts regarding Borislav Stevanovic, his place of birth, (though I explained it), and then you saw that I edited Anna Nicole Smith's page and you undone my legitimate changes. It's really uncalled for. Shermanpalicad (talk) 11:58, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Templates Updating

Hello, As an experienced user as you well are, do you know why template pages aren't updating straight away on other pages after editing it. Many thanks --Skyblueshaun (talk) 08:45, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

it might be WP:PURGE? GiantSnowman 18:03, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, but quite frankly, don't understand. :( --Skyblueshaun (talk) 10:57, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
That page will explain how to try and solve it for you. GiantSnowman 17:42, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

This is just to know: had he scored only once, would I've been able to add a focus about that goal? Dr Salvus 20:08, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Mentioning the first goal, or a notable goal (winning in a cup competition, or other goal covered in more significant detail than just. match report) for a senior player is fine. For a youth player? I don't think so. GiantSnowman 20:13, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Another question arleady asked with no reply: why isn't the first team unofficial debut notable? Dr Salvus 20:14, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Because it's a friendly game, who cares? was it covered in anything other than a run-of-the-mill match report? GiantSnowman 20:16, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
And if somebody takes part of a tournée abroad? For example, Alexander Arnold's article says that he'd taken part at Liverpool's stage in the USA in 2016. Dr Salvus 20:18, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Being part of a pre-season tour? Probably merits nothing more than 'X was a squad member of the club's pre-season tour of the United States in 2016', but only if sources deal with it in more than just a trivial matter. GiantSnowman 20:54, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

A source says he scored X goals in Y appearances during a season while another says he scored N goals in Z appearances for the under-19s. Which info do I write? It looks both sources are reliable. Dr Salvus 17:56, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

only one is correct, and if you can't work that out (such as by finding a third source), then leave it out. GiantSnowman 07:53, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
I've found another source which cites other numbers. Could I say he'd scored about five goals in about 30 matches and then specify the sources contradict to each other? Dr Salvus 14:04, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
I think that would be too confusing. GiantSnowman 14:18, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

NFOOTY

Hi, Giant Snowman!

Thanks for letting me know about NFOOTY no longer being a thing in recent AFDs. Does that mean football articles are just being assessed off the general notability criteria, or is there some new criteria I ought to know about? Phew, I think that means a lot of footballer articles are for the chop.

Hope you don't mind me asking you directly, it can be difficult to find relevant info at times! MarchOfTheGreyhounds (talk) 18:53, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Is this original research

According to this source there were eight players born in 2002 and two born in 2003 in a Juventus U23's match. The source also says that Miretti (born in August 2003) had played as a captain. I've also written to his article that he was the captain despite being the youngest player fielded (the other born in 2003 is Soulé but he was in April). However, the source doesn't say he'd been the youngest but I've written the info having seen that Soulé had been born in April. Is this OR? If so, feel free to remove the info from the page. Dr Salvus 19:07, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Technically, yes. GiantSnowman 19:16, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
So, what do I do not to make it an OR? Do I write a note saying that there was another born in 2003 but younger of four months citing the source of Soulé's birthdate? Dr Salvus 19:21, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
no because that's WP:SYNTH. Either find a source that says it, or leave the info out. Do not try and smash together multiple sources to show something. GiantSnowman 19:25, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Did you mean to encase your delete in ref code? At the moment it looks like you've voted delete and keep on the AfD. regards. Govvy (talk) 08:28, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

no, sorry, I clicked the wrong code! GiantSnowman 10:09, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

Reliable websites

Hey GS. Any chance you could run me over why aleaguestats.com is reliable but sofascore.com is not? Falastur2 Talk 21:01, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

No idea about Aleague stats - I had presumed it was an official source - but Sofa is just a random database. GiantSnowman 21:02, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
It definitely doesn't look official to me. sofascore, on the other hand, appears to be a pretty professional and organised business (and yes, it's an actual business).
But really what this all comes down to is: what constitutes an official source, anyway? Who gets to decide that one thing is reliable and another is not. Surely, by the same logic that sofascore is "just some random database" then Opta, or soccerbase, or RSSSF are also "just some random databases"? What defines a proper database? If it's that it has to be produced by a company rather than as an amateur pet project then sofascore is in and RSSSF is most definitely out. If it has to be that it's widely regarded in the community then how can that actually be proven - for virtually any website at all? I should point out at this point that Wikipedia doesn't actually even have any rules on what makes a statistical source reliable. I've read over WP:RELIABLE a ton of times and I just can't find anything which provides any feedback on statistical sources, and when they can or cannot be used. Falastur2 Talk 14:10, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
do not confuse 'official' and 'reliable'... GiantSnowman 17:24, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
I'm not. This is what I'm saying though. If being official is not proof of reliability, what is the real test? Falastur2 Talk 02:18, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
it's only one test. What is the source of Sofa's information? what is their oversight/editing like? etc. GiantSnowman 18:37, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
Their data source is direct from Opta[1] Granted they did enable users to enter live info too, but only at grassroots level - I think we can both agree that none of what I entered for Mombaerts is grassroots level. Given that they are (presumably) feeding Opta's data in directly via API it shouldn't need much oversight, but they do directly say on that page that they have 150 employees, so I have to assume that they have mechanisms in place to identify errors and dodgy sources and correct them. Falastur2 Talk 10:25, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
OK, fair enough, probably reliable then! GiantSnowman 07:09, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

Wang Jiahao

Are you okay if I move David Wang (footballer) back to Wang Jiahao? He was known as Jiahao Wang in Spain (his country of birth), and has now moved to China, where he is known as Wang Jiahao, following Chinese name customs. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 08:24, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

It needs a RM I think - but remember this is English-language Wikipedia and we use what English-language sources say. GiantSnowman 09:24, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

O'Brien

I know that but fucking Soccerbase doesn't bother to differentiate. Hence it misled me. Eagleash (talk) 19:40, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Soccerbase is usually good for showing them as different - whereas Soccerway counts them as league and it's so frustrating! GiantSnowman 19:42, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
I've yet to see Soccerbase (or BBC fixtures, come to that) show a match as a 'play-off' – unless I've missed something. Then again, I think this is the first year that any of the players in my 'notebook' have been involved so maybe there's something different this year. Doesn't help that the scheduling seems a bit haphazard to me too. Soccerway I don't use, except for a few of 'my' players who have slipped below tier 5 now... Each has its merits but I prefer SB. Eagleash (talk) 20:02, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
SB does, see e.g. this where play-off games are clearly different! GiantSnowman 20:54, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
That's all but a decade ago; here's O'Brien's entry, including today's game where it just lists it as 'League Two'. The summary at he top may include it in 'other' but it's not very clear and the summaries are not always updated promptly or accurately. Eagleash (talk) 21:44, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi GS. I think this IP editor 188.164.221.8 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) could do with a lengthier block. They edit articles about Albanian football and at player articles they keep updating caps without updating timestamps. Robby.is.on (talk) 07:28, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Kevin Clark redirect?

I don't understand why this is reverted as a redirect when there are versions in other languages. This, to me, makes no sense; moreover, it doesn't sit right with me that his death might as well have not happened by reading the School of Rock wiki page. I know that death alone does not automatically make someone worthy of having a wiki page, but I don't see the harm of giving him one.

Hi @Seasider53: I am concerned by these blind reverts of seemingly good edits. Would you care to explain before I have to escalate for wider review? GiantSnowman 18:19, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

For the reasons I gave in my reversion summaries. Seemed suspicious, given the extended and obscure edit summaries that had to be matched to the changes, which included external links to non-English websites. If we're asking for clarification, maybe you have one for this reversion you made to one of my edits because you found it "non-constructive" without even giving any further details? We all make mistakes. Seasider53 (talk) 18:32, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
I don't see any edit summary in the Jesús Vallejo edit...and my Bowyer summary was valid. GiantSnowman 18:49, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Should I itemise the questions I have about the reversion you made? Bear in mind, the edits were allowed (and are still in place) after I gave pushback on it. Seasider53 (talk) 19:04, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
you mean where you continued to revert and then were reverted by another user? Sure, go for it. GiantSnowman 19:18, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Was the other user correct to revert (as in, which part of my edit required consensus on the talk page)? Just trying to get my ducks in a row before going any further. Seasider53 (talk) 19:30, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
no, they should not have done that - but you should not have re-reverted. GiantSnowman 19:36, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Also see this (the old "fine as it was" dismissive) from before my outrageous edits and this one from after. But anyway, getting back to the point of the thread, it appears I should not have reverted, but if the editor makes an account, I will ask them to be clearer in their edit summaries. Seasider53 (talk) 19:42, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. GiantSnowman 21:12, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Epic LOL! Apparently, we're (i'm?) now not allowed to update the infobox even if we update the timestamp, news to me. I know my summary may have been misleading (he's pushing 40 and still playing top-tier football, hence the "old fart"), but even after i explained that to the user that reverted me, it stayed reverted!

Can't be bothered (at least this week) to update it again, sorry for the inconvenience y'all! --193.137.135.2 (talk) 14:44, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

I know GS, MxArya told me they clicked on the wrong button, they intended to revert me on the grounds of failing to provide a source (instead of vandalism). We don't need a source to update a box, providing we update the timestamp! Am i correct? --193.137.135.2 (talk) 18:30, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

block?

Did you mean to upol block this user? I could certainly see a spam block but I'm confused as the username doesn't seem to be against anything. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:34, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

The user name has the word 'shit' in it. GiantSnowman 18:36, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
It's a common Indian name (Rakshit specifically), definitely not a UPOL vio. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:38, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Then they can explain that and request an unblock. GiantSnowman 18:39, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
I don't think that's completely fair considering it wasn't an appropriate block to begin with... PRAXIDICAE💕 18:39, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
And we have several dozen articles about people with the first or last name Rakshit, for example. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:39, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
GS, I've opened up a thread for community input at WP:AN. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:50, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Brakshit23

I see that you have blocked Brakshit23 as a username block, but as far as I can see you haven't said how it infringes the username policy. If it is because the name contains the syllable "shit", many Indian names contain that syllable. "Rakshit" is a reasonably common Indian name, so it could be "B. Rakshit", and the name "Brakshit", though not at all common, does also exist. Obviously you may have a good reason for the block that I don't know about, in which case I'd be interested to know it, but if it was because of the "shit" then it was, I think, a mistake. JBW (talk) 18:38, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Actually I've explained above and on the user talk page. Yes, it's because it contains 'shit', which is not allowed by WP:DISRUPTNAME. They are free to explain their username and request an unblock. GiantSnowman 18:40, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
This would eliminate a LOT of Hindi names, this is a really bad take and not in the spirit of policy. Please reverse your block. PRAXIDICAE💕 18:43, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
Can we keep this in one location please? Three discussions on the same topic is not great. GiantSnowman 18:45, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Dharmo Rakshati Rakshita (Sanskrit: धर्मो रक्षति रक्षितः; IAST: dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ) is a popular Sanskrit phrase mentioned in Mahabharata and Manusmriti verse 8.15. It can be loosely translated as "The Dharma protects those who protect it." The closest synonyms for Dharma in English are righteousness and ethics.
रक्षित = Rakshit

Need your advice

Hey GiantSnowman, Sorry to bother you but I need your help or advice with an issue. I seem to have a problem with a user named BEN917 over articles such as Thanasis Intzoglou, Nikos Christidis, Babis Intzoglou, Anestis Afentoulidis, Vasilis Konstantinou, and Themis Rigas. I added content to them and supported them with reliable secondary sources from newspapers such as Globe and Mail, and Toronto Star. He initially deleted the content without a valid reason I later reverted his edits. I addressed the issue with him on his talk page and he claims that the sources are not reliable due to the fact that they don't contain a live URL. I can't provide a live URL on them because the sources come from the Toronto City library archives through an association with ProQuest. Anyone with a Toronto City library card can access the site and prove that the sources confirm the information. I was under the impression that a live URL for books and newspapers was not necessary for Wikipedia articles and that you only needed to provide the newspaper information. He also claims that he has sources to disprove the content I provided but didn't provide any sources to discredit my sources. I just want to know if I'm correct or if user, BEN917 is being disruptive. Because the sources I provided confirm the content I can even download the articles on a pdf file and email them to you to prove it. Thanks for your time. Shotgun pete (talk) 10:52, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

Shotgun pete, firstly, I did not mention any reason for removing your content, while fixing some other issues in the articles, because I thought this content was a result of vandalism. That was on me. Secondly, do not refer to the sources you used as reliable because the whole issue here is the reliability of the sources, which is in question. If you also put an effort and make a mini research about the players' bio, see articles about their careers, interviews that they talk about their careers and their profiles at football sites you can see no mention of Toronto Homer, while they played for a greek club at the time (which also seems very unlikely, but let the sources do the talk). If you could find the pdf file and cite it to the articles would be for the best, but can you find more sources to cross check your content? BEN917 9:55, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
@Shotgun pete and BEN917: WP:SOURCEACCESS applies here - and whilst I personally prefer sources that are online so I can verify the content, offline sources should not be rejected automatically. GiantSnowman 07:24, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the help GiantSnowman. I think even WP:OFFLINE supports the usage of offline sources too. Based on WP:RELIABLE it looks like national newspapers generally fall into the category of reliable secondary sources for statements of facts. And BEN917 I believe I did put some effort and research into the articles as to the fact that I created three out of the six articles. Yes, it is very likely they played in North America (Canada & USA) because Europe and North America run on two different seasonal schedules and it was very popular in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s for European players to play the summer months in North America when their parent clubs permitted them. Yes, I can try to find a pdf file and yes I try to find more reliable sources from the newspaper archives. Shotgun pete (talk) 21:43, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

LagartosMid

Vandalism only account. "Lagartos" (literally "lizards" in English) is a derogatory term for the Sporting CP ballclub. They are here to do nothing but destroy articles, as seen (twice or thrice) in Fernando Peyroteo!

Warren Zaire-Emery

Hello GS, need your help in this. Can you merge Draft:Warren Zaire-Emery with Warren Zaïre-Emery?

I created the draft version on 16th March. However another user created the page in mainspace on 28th May without taking the draft version to consideration. Bit bizzare that the user had to rename a redirect link he made for a completely different player in December last year to create this page. I cant help but notice this is the second time this user have did something similar. The previous one being Artemijus Tutyškinas where I made a draft version first, and this user renamed some stub from earlier date and published it in mainspace. I am assuming this is probably for getting the credit for page creation.

I didnt bother to merge them first time and deleted my draft version. But I dont want to delete my drafts every time, so can you please merge Draft:Warren Zaire-Emery with Warren Zaïre-Emery? Thanks in advance! Kokoeist (talk) 13:40, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

This week's article for improvement (week 23, 2022)

Squash is a racket and ball sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return.

Danylo Ignatenko

Hey GiantSnowman, long time no talk, you may remember me. I've been less active in talk sections this year. Quick question, what do you think about this? I moved the page Danylo Ihnatenko to Danylo Ignatenko, thinking it was an uncontroversial move since the WP:COMMONNAME is Ignatenko, judging from sources and the fact that he has "Ignatenko" on the back of his shirt, quite literally. Is the user that left a message on my talk page right, I should revert the page move? I am unsure because I am not really savvy in this grey area. Should I raise the issue at the Football WikiProject or is there already some quick consensus that is known for Ukrainian/Russian names that should be applied here, something that outweighs COMMONNAME? Thanks for your help. Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:28, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Ah, I made a mistake. I didn't see you were in vacation until Tuesday. I'll raise the issue at WPF to see what they say over there anyways. Feel free to respond here or over there. Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:30, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Billy Forbes

Hi,

You removed an edit I posted a few days ago and my guess is it was because I made billy Forbes out to be world class which I obviously no not to be correct and I am firm believer in wiki to be as accurate as possible but to my defence he is the countries leading goal scorer with 11 goals in just 20 matches for Turks and Caicos islands so to the people of that island he would be the closest thing to having a pele they will ever have so I believe it was fair to add that comment so I would appreciate it if you edit it back in please. Out of complete interest do you work for Wikipedia or is it a kind of hobby making sure edits are as factual as possible. Kind regards Paul Xlpaul12 (talk) 19:42, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

(by talk reader) @Xlpaul12: Wikipedia is built and maintained by an online community of volunteers. We have created rules like WP:V that insist that the content we have is cited to a reliable source, as opposed to just whatever we think is true in our opinion. As you can imagine, this is a regular struggle with vandals like you living out your empty lives defacing this edifice. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:46, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Further, he only has 4 goals in 14 official appearances. GiantSnowman 21:10, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Who the fuck asked your opinion Chris!!?? And you are probably the type of keyboard warrior nerd who has no friends or social life and spend all your pathetic life looking for a moment where you feel brave and write an abusive post to someone. Giantsnowman has a valid point as Billy Forbes is not a world class footballer but if you know anything about football Chris you will know 11 goals in 20 games is a good return and Billy Forbes is arguably the best player Turks and Caicos have ever produced. I fully appreciate everyone that takes there time making sure Wikipedia is accurate as I want to read things that are true and not things that are opinions and worse lies. To giantsnowman thank you for the time you take making sure Wikipedia is accurate and Chris don’t ever reply to one of my posts Xlpaul12 (talk) 21:13, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
(by talk reader) Why would I know anything about football? Chris Troutman (talk) 21:15, 17 June 2022 (UTC)
Please remain WP:CIVIL. GiantSnowman 21:14, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Giantsnowman if you look on Turks and Caicos page it says he has 11 goals and in all honesty I don’t know if this is correct so it’s fair for me to look into this matter further to find out which figure is correct which I shall do and will come back once I have the correct figures. As for being civil I completely agree and I have no problem with constructive criticism and agree totally in Wikipedia being correct but I also don’t like people who no absolutely nothing about me leaving me a semi rude comment as I would not do that to anyone on any online social media or any websites as cowardly. I will come back once I have the correct numbers Cheers Paul Xlpaul12 (talk) 06:07, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

thanks for this - look forward to hearing from you! GiantSnowman 07:31, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Giantsnowman, you were indeed correct by removing my post as the information was quite accurate as I had him down with 20 caps but he has actually played 22 times but I was correct in regards to his goals scored which is 11. For the small nation of Turks and Caicos I would appreciate if I could “sex” his profile a little as he is there most successful player in there history while I won’t write any incorrect information. This was sloppy by me as when I visit Wikipedia I like to think I am reading correct stats and I really appreciate the fact you help the world in making what they read is true and my slightly aggressive tone was in no ways aimed at you as you were polite and professional. I won’t change anything on the page until you give the 👍. I would like you check the figures out yourself and you can do this by visiting “soccerway” kind regards Paul PS please keep up the good work

             Xlpaul12 (talk) 20:59, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Wikipedia relies on reliable sources to verify information, especially about living people - what sources do you have to support your changes? I have linked you above to one which shows only 4 goals in 14 international games. GiantSnowman 07:46, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

FC Edinburgh

Hi GS, hope all is well.

Regarding the name change of Edinburgh City F.C. -

I agreed that the convention for British clubs is F.C. However the club's own social media, media reports and the Chairman's comments indicate the club is to be known as FC Edinburgh (no dots) as FC Barcelona is for example. Just wondered your thoughts on the matter. I do see that it's the usual way to list the clubs in the UK as F.C. but on this occasion I'd go with just FC. CoatbridgeChancellor (talk) 21:00, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

It should be discussed via WP:RM. GiantSnowman 21:09, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Eager user Danielsltt

Afternoon GS. Just want to put a name on your radar. Daniel seems largely pleasant, but is currently in the process of forking content over at Football club (association football). He first amended the lede's of large number of teams to divert to his new article (removing the links from Association Football in the process), and also changed all diverts related to football club, sports club and so on to point to his new article also. I've reverted the unconstructive stuff as being unexplained edits (especially where diverting from established article to an incomplete stub). I have discussed some of the changes so far with him at his talk page but he has since blanked it and started to remove content from one article to pad out the new one. I have reverted the removal at one end for the moment and suggested he use his sandbox rather than blanking the content of other pages. Anyway, I don't want this to seem personal from myself just purposely going around spoiling otherwise good faith edits. Koncorde (talk) 15:09, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up - I'm not sure we need a separate Football club (association football) article? GiantSnowman 20:39, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
Would agree, though the existing Football team, Sports team and Sports club are all pretty poor and underwhelming coverage of the topics (bloated WP:DICDEF, largely unsourced original research). I don't think the topic itself is particularly of note compared to say Ownership which gets some significant coverage. How a club is organised seems pretty niche if there's any sources discussing it at all. Koncorde (talk) 21:35, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

"User" Jypas1986

Per this message you sent this person (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jypas1986#June_2022): which is exactly what they continue to do, at least in Rafa Soares and Filipe Soares (footballer, born 1999). Some sources added yes, but i bet my left hand they are copying texts verbatim to the articles here, all while using "exquisite" "English" and POV like no tomorrow (in which Greek "users" are specialists, i've been here for 16 years so i'm not lying to you kind sir).

You have been briefed, attentively --2001:8A0:767B:9C00:ED3F:1C29:6929:7F97 (talk) 23:59, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

do you have any specific diffs of edits which need investigating? GiantSnowman 17:38, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

I thought this one (the verbatim copying of texts from sources) would be enough, it's forbidden by WP guidelines isn't it? Have a look at this one from a previous version of R. Soares (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rafa_Soares&diff=1092569485&oldid=1092568827): "He played in all the small teams of the Dragons, played with K19 in the Youth League and reached the second team, making his professional debut in the second division in August 2013, while he was anointed international with the small national teams of his country, playing in 2015 Mundial U20", what the hell does this mean (not to mention the Liga Portugal 2 - aka second division - and the FC Porto B links were removed for absolutely no reason)?

I've already told you from here (https://www.sport-fm.gr/article/podosfairo/superleague1/paok-erxetai-o-rafa-soares-plisiazei-se-rede/4304214), the entire text was copied to his PAOK FC sub-section after using Google Translate, which resulted in "The 27-year-old extreme defender, after a very good season in Guimaraes, was satisfied with the plan presented to him by Jose Boto and so he decided to try his luck in Greece.

The agreement between the two parties provides for a three-year contract, with the player's annual earnings reaching half a million euros and there are extra amounts in the form of a goal achievement bonus." here (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rafa_Soares&diff=prev&oldid=1091617108) before i stepped in. So, content copied from the site SPORT-FM.GR on 5 June 2022 at 10:15. Question already answered or still not?

Ok thank you for clarifying - I have notified them about copyvio. If the issue isn't ongoing then I cannot block. GiantSnowman 18:07, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Contract expiry dates

I know that pretty much all contracts with English clubs (EFL/PL) expire on 30 June, but most of the Scottish clubs have an earlier expiry date. e.g. Rangers officially announced that John Souttar had completed his move, which had been pre-agreed, on 1 June, i.e. as soon as his contract with Hearts had expired. So in the case of someone like Conor McCarthy (moving from Scotland to England), his contract with St Mirren will have expired a few weeks before his contract with Barnsley starts on 1 July. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 20:16, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

The Yorkshire Post opens its article about the transfer by saying "The centre-back will officially join the Oakwell outfit on July 1". GiantSnowman 20:55, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Template formatting

Just to follow up here to prevent you causing any further disruption to the article, there's no actual reason to format the infobox in a line-by-line manner. I don't see any reason why you continually insist on making these edits. All my warmest wishes, ItsKesha (talk) 21:43, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Conversely, I don't see any reason to format as you have done. The infobox has been in that style since the article was created back in December 2017 (see WP:STABLE) and matches the standard infobox formatting at {{Infobox football biography}}. GiantSnowman 06:24, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Peter Barnes 1981/82 season

To avoid a further edit war I thought I would explain why Barnes played only 30 matches in 1981/82. It appears some sources have taken this page of total appearances from the Leeds F.C. History site where they have miscounted the appearances of Barnes and Harris. https://www.leeds-fans.org.uk/leeds/history/67.html This says Barnes played 31 and Harris 15(3). However on the same site, they document each appearance individually and the total for Barnes comes to only 30 as referenced here with "30/30" (30th start out of 30) on the last game of the season v WBA http://www.ozwhitelufc.net.au/leeds_stats/leeds_united_team_details/Teamsheet_by_season/1981-82/1981-82%20West%20Bromwich%20Albion%20(a).php whereas the final start for Harris is referenced as 16/16 (16th start out of 16) http://www.ozwhitelufc.net.au/leeds_stats/leeds_united_team_details/Teamsheet_by_season/1981-82/1981-82%20Manchester%20City%20(h).php

It is perhaps because Harris took Barnes usual 11 shirt on his final start for Leeds that the mistake in the totals was made. Another site concurs that Harris, and not Barnes played in that match against Manchester City https://www.worldfootball.net/report/premier-league-1981-1982-leeds-united-manchester-city/

I have not seen a source that says Barnes played in that match to increment his total appearances to 31. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rcclh (talkcontribs)

@Rcclh: Hugman, Neil Brown, and based on the stats table, ENFA, all say 31. GiantSnowman 06:15, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
I've just explained all this in great detail, and all you can say is other sites say 31 without any explanation of how they arrived at that total. You are clearly more intent on trying to win an edit war than getting to the truth of the matter. Have you read what i wrote? Rcclh (talk) 18:56, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Yes - but you fail to consider that the sites you source are essentially fan sites (albeit well researched) and you fail to consider the possibility that they might have missed a game... GiantSnowman 18:59, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
We can now add The Times report to the list saying 30. I disagree that it is simply a case of some sources saying one figure and other sources another. All the sources quoting 30 are listing the individual games, the sources quoting 31 do not (apart from the one that quotes 31 and adds up to 30). I think that's crucial. I do understand that the same mistake may be replicated in multiple sources, but I would think the Leeds fan site is not getting its data from the world football site as it includes, for example, unused substitutes that world football does not.
Why would you think The Times report had printed totally the wrong player in the report on the day? That seem possible but unlikely. Surely it is more likely that other sources have mistakenly included Barnes because he was listed at 11 in the programme? https://www.flickr.com/photos/114058793@N05/51688930244/in/album-72157720164285367/
(It's a shame actually that no further programmes from that season have been uploaded to that flickr account, as that would give the answer to the puzzle on the statistics page) Rcclh (talk) 22:35, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
This is being discussed at WT:FOOTBALL, as you are aware. GiantSnowman 07:35, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Refs removed again in Miguel Vítor's honours (and subpar English to go), would not be surprised it's them editing anon. Plus, no grasp of the WP:FOOTY guidelines, if a player is not part of a supercup squad they don't get a medal (oh, and did i mention they REMOVED the refs?).

Tagging

It appears there seems to be confusion (at least from me) about tagging some latest sock accounts based on what the results are shown at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/DJdjPollard15/Archive#20_July_2022. These two accounts are agreed that they are 'confirmed to each other' but when I checked the contributions and tags, I think it is probably impossible that this account is the master as I am familiar with their editing patterns. Unsure if one LTA has copied another editing habit or both people have managed to use the same network at roughly the same time. The tagging needs a bit of agreement as to clarify who is the culprit of the editing made today. The user who opened up the SPI just assumed "BreretonUnited22" was DJdjPollard15 which currently does not match the tagging. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 17:50, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, I've made a comment at the SPI. GiantSnowman 18:02, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
I was checking the user creation log and found out both accounts were created a minute within each other. Could mean the same person has been using two accounts at the same time to confuse people when doing different types of editing. I can also see that has not happened for the first time- it also happened in April this year. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:14, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
yes could well be the case. GiantSnowman 08:53, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) FWIW, constant incorrect updates, and hidden advice (even in Turkish) ignored or removed; adds incomplete amendments every set of Turkish League fixtures; if reverted, returns immediately usually from another IP in the same range (making communication very difficult, though messages have been left). But over time, multiple ranges have been used. Matty has blocked some individual IPs but they have been known to redo their edits immediately from another IP. Must be over a year now this been happening. When I was last in contact with Matty about it he said a 'range' would be in order but was not certain how to go about it. Might be able to cobble together a list of IPs if anyone needs or wants it. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 14:28, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Football

I want to thank you for your vote on the the Kion Lee article for deletion. It is good to see people evaluating articles on their merits, not claims of what merits may exist. I have to admit that I find the whole AfD process far too troubled. I really wish something could be done about people throwing out attack words like "elitism" and "revisionism".John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:34, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

  • I think these football discussions are the first time where I have seen an advocate of keeping actually use the term "grandfather" for the inclusion. Thank you for your work on this page. I am fairly sure that the changes I made are supported by the link that I added (and by a link that already existed).

One tip for the future: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution suggests "When you find a passage in an article that is biased, inaccurate, or unsourced the best practice is to improve it if you can rather than deleting salvageable text. For example, if an article appears biased, add balancing material or make the wording more neutral." This works really well, because then other editors can see exactly what needed improving.

Best wishes, Pete Ridges (talk) 14:56, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Sidney Elliot/Elliott

Are you sure that Sidney Elliot is the same player as Sidney Elliott? I know the names are very similar, but Elliott is listed with a date of birth of 1910, while Elliot was listed as being born 1908. I know they both played for Notts County around the same time, but I would've thought the sources for Elliott would've mentioned him playing for Fulham and Chelsea! I think it is just a massive coincidence, and County had two players, Sidney Elliot and Sidney Elliott on their books at a similar time period. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 22:08, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

ENFA confirms it's the same player. GiantSnowman 22:09, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Dates and Formats for info boxes

You changed the dates and formats for James J. Braddock to January instead of Jan and so on, but listed Wikipedia's manual for dates and formats without realizing that the section in which you use to justify spelling out the entire month specifically says to use the three letter version of the month "only in limited situations where brevity is helpful". Right next to this is a pop up box which states "For use in tables, infoboxes, references, etc." Please refrain from using your bots to change this in other records, because I have to go through by hand (I don't know how to use a bot) and change it back as the professional boxing records are infoboxes and need brevity. AfDs

Hello, GiantSnowman,

Reviewing the day's AFD discussions is now on my end-of-the-day task list and I think I've seen you participate in nearly every recent AFD discussion about football players. My guesstimate is that you opt for "Delete" about 75% of the time and "Keep" in about 25% of the discussions I look at so unlike some other participants, you seem to eavluate each case individually and not have a generic response to the bulk of these nominations. Some editors seem to say "Delete" or "Keep" in 100% of these cases, seemingly to make a point about recent changes in notability standards for athletes.

I appreciate your consistency and your willingness to spend time reviewing all of these many nominations that have been forth over the past two months. Liz Read! Talk! 23:49, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Mika Biereth

Hello GS, please help me.

I created Draft:Mika Biereth on 29 July. However, 31 hours later, another user created a page in the user space on 30 July, and then moved it to Mika Biereth on 31 July without taking the draft version to consideration. Please see the page history. So I can't move Draft:Mika Biereth to Mika Biereth now.

I find this user has did something similar recently. This user created three pages (Corey Addai, Nohan Kenneh & Cieran Slicker) that you have already created in draft in your user space. I am assuming this user tried to get the credit for page creation.

So can you merge Draft:Mika Biereth with Mika Biereth? Thanks! --Phikia (talk) 09:33, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Exclusionism

Hi! Probably better for me to comment here, rather than at the RfA. Thanks for being so approachable to commenters, but mostly that I had never even thought about "exclusionism" before, and it might be my new favourite buzzword. I might consider myself a cruft exclusionist now so thanks for pointing it out :).

Not the first time this happens (i think the first time i saw it was in Carlos Fortes (footballer, born 1994), also playing in Indonesia now): this "user" goes to the infobox and removes refs (for full name, height, etc) without one word (please see this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Abel_Camar%C3%A1&diff=next&oldid=1095782032).

Hi, your "(script-assisted date audit and style fixes per MOS:NUM)" on articles like Ray Reardon and Doug Mountjoy removed quite a few wikilinks. I've undone the changes on those two. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 08:16, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

It's not my script - raise it at WP:MOSNUMscript. The wikilcnks are removed deliberately by the script. Please restore the updated DMY dates at least. Blindly reverting was silly. GiantSnowman 08:47, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Dhjeekw and persistent BLP violations

Hi, you warned user Dhjeekw (talk · contribs) recently about making unsourced edits, and they have now done so beyond a final warning with this edit. I was going to warn them for making the unsourced edit, but saw they had already recieved several warnings and now gone beyond the final, so a block seems needed due to the complete disregard of references. TylerBurden (talk) 14:10, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

I have blocked them, thanks. GiantSnowman 15:09, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for dealing with that. I thought you should also know that they now appear to have evaded their block to make this brief rant on the talk page of the article they were reverted on about Wikipedias horrible "agenda" of having content be verifiable. I posted a notice to them about logged out editing but since this seems like rather obvious block evasion I thought the blocking admin should be made aware in case you think further action is warranted. TylerBurden (talk) 17:02, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
FYI, the user is back to doing BLP violations and ignoring warnings/messages — I've requested the block using the auto-filler thing, which unfortunately labels the user vandalism, which isn't exactly the case. Adeletron 3030 (talkedits) 18:40, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Wrong removal of edit

Now listen here giant snowman. I completely understand why you've made a decision which you might believe is in the communitys best interests but its not. My edit simply provided context. You wouldn't usually see a player like John Johnson from league 2 talking about international preferences. The context that I added was essential and I would like to request the immediate reinstatement of my edit or possibly a second opinion. I have no bias whatsoever I am Canadian and just want to provide free information via Wikipedia.

Kind Regards, Oliver TheVeryYesLad (talk) 02:14, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

(by talk reader) @TheVeryYesLad: Now you "listen here". The cited source doesn't support your edit. The cited source says this player will play for Scotland but not England, even though he qualifies. It doesn't say anything about how likely (or not) it is for a player like him to express "international preferences." I'm American and don't really consider Scotland another country from the UK although technically it is. Had you read GiantSnowman's edit summary you would understand the concern with your edit was your apparent original research or point of view. Please only what the source says, not what you think is true. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:29, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
What Chris said, basically. Your interpretation of/opinion on the article/subject is not needed. GiantSnowman 08:06, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello GiantSnowMan, I have some quotions reltd with that page:

1Would you mind to remove from that template: { { historical } }

2This list is very helful in terms of regarding notblity at Afd. Would you mind to create wieder tble which would also include 'seprate column for sources', 'separate column for "best achivement at IFFHS ranking of the leagues"' and separate sections for: 1Proffesioonal leagues at national level 2Lower divisions which are considered as proffesional 3Leagues at national level not considered as proffesional (currently thre is 1st and 3rd option but no 2nd)

What do you think? I would also like to very slightly change/update guidelines for notablity of football players but firstly I would like to correct this xtremally long (453 references) page, would you able to help me? It is very big. Cheers Dawid2009 (talk) 14:39, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

The list is historical - NFOOTBALL has been deprecated and WP:SPORTCRIT must be met. There is no automatically notability for being a professional player. GiantSnowman 15:40, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

NT update

GS, what do we think about removal of the NT *timestamp* from infoboxes where the player has not made an appearance for some time or is ostensibly too old for the U-xx sides but has yet to make a senior appearance. I refer to the actual timestamp not the 'closing off' of the years involved, which now seems to have a 'loose' consensus. Eagleash (talk) 11:06, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

I've noticed this on my watchlist - no concerns from me. If the international career is over, then no need for a 'last update' parameter as the stats will never change. GiantSnowman 11:08, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes fine if international retirement has been confirmed (E.g. Milivojevic) or players who have not appeared for a few years (2 should be absolute minimum I feel) but it is being removed from U-xx players who played last year (2021) but have not yet made a senior appearance; included in senior squad(s) but forced to withdraw through injury. Eze would be an example. Eagleash (talk) 11:34, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
If there is no active international career - the ones I have seen it on has been youth players who are now too old - then there is no harm. GiantSnowman 14:09, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
OK, I thought that as a fair number of article are being affected that it was worth a brief discussion. Eagleash 19:08, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Feel free to raise at WT:FOOTBALL - my word is not gospel and the wider consensus might be different to my personal view! GiantSnowman 19:09, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Howdy. We need an RFC or something, that covers the birth/death place disputes concerning the Baltic states. Not sure where such a big discussion should be held. But I'm certain, if we don't nail this down for good? It will just keep recurring. PS - We've a lot of bio pages under this topic, which erroneously show Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania. Hi, I noticed your warning on the above User. Account user:Matronlymilk was created 3 minutes before Tortaliamilk666. Could be coincidental. As I'm fairly new I'm not sure if this is the type of thing you need to know? Knitsey (talk) 14:21, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Could be a coincidence, could be a link - see WP:DUCK and WP:SPI if you feel it should be investigated. GiantSnowman 14:23, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
Will do. I will see if either of them post again then look into reporting them if they look linked. Thanks so much. Knitsey (talk) 14:50, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Ryan Alebiosu

Hi GiantSnowman, I'm afraid I don't understand what ELNO is and why my edit on Ryan Alebiosu was changed - could you help clarify for me please? Thanks RossEvans18 (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Please read WP:ELNO - as I have already informed you, please do not add external links when the same link is already used as an in-line citation. What do you not understand about that? GiantSnowman 20:09, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
But, the same link wasn't used in an in line citation. I added the new line about the Kilmarnock match. RossEvans18 (talk) 20:22, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
You added a Soccerway external link - the same link was used in-line already in the article. GiantSnowman 20:28, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
Then I shall remove that link but readd the Kilmarnock match line RossEvans18 (talk) 20:30, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
You will need to find a better source for the Kilmarnock information. It does not actually confirm that it was his debut, only that he played. GiantSnowman 20:31, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Khalydia Velasquez - misconception about notability?

It appears I unwittingly recreated an article (since speedily deleted) you made for Khalydia Velasquez that was deleted for lack of notability. I've been editing under the assumption that footballers with international caps for mens/womens senior national teams automatically count as notable under WP:NFOOTBALL. Is that a misconception and/or oversimplified reading of the guidelines? I ask because Velasquez was already capped twice by Belize at the time your original article got axed but her status her as a capped international didn't come up in the associated discussion. Danish Ranger (talk) 16:26, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

NFOOTBALL has been scrapped following a RFC - so WP:SPORTSCRIT/WP:GNG applies. In short, this means that sporting achievements do not matter, and there is no 'automatic' notability for playing at a certain level - what is important is significant coverage. GiantSnowman 17:58, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

I'd appreciate it if you could go through this article, with this in mind. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 00:30, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi GiantSnowman! Hope you're well. I see you're quite dedicated to and skilled at making edits on football-related articles. I have a personal interest in the beautiful game, and would love to support you and the Wiki Football community. I see you have quite a few items listed on your 'To-do' list, so I wanted to reach out and offer my support. I'm not so sure what it means to 'move' articles, but if you think a relative newbie like myself is capable of helping out, please let me know! Did you read it? She didn't "also have British citizenship". Her American nationality was stripped from her. She was made British without any say-so and she could only recover her American nationality by naturalizing as if she was a foreigner. I won't edit war with you on it, but you have introduced an inaccuracy to the article, IMO. SusunW (talk) 19:51, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

...but it was regained - born an American, died an American. Perhaps change to 'American-British' or similar as a compromise? GiantSnowman 20:52, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
It was regained only because she naturalized, not as her birthright, so it seems disingenuous to label her as an American, since America didn't want/claim her. I appreciate your willingness to compromise, but I can't come up with a simple fix for a global policy norm that routinely denationalized women. I honestly think hyphenating it makes it look like it was dual nationality. The truth is married women in her day did not have individual nationality and trying to style them as if they did is problematic. I cannot think of an easy or clean solution as American, later British (and still later American), is clunky and why I left it out to begin with.SusunW (talk) 22:00, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Yet you have no issue with her being in Category:American poets (amongst other American categories)? Or, for that matter, Category:Fijian journalists? Or Australian categories? GiantSnowman 18:28, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Actually I do, but I recognize women's nationality is an unwinnable topic. WP is a collaborative effort. My opinion doesn't really matter and if there was a RfC my words would fall on deaf ears or be drowned out by others. It's why I said I wouldn't edit war with you about it. One picks one's battles, or I do anyway. SusunW (talk) 18:37, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Rizespor persistently disruptive editor

I don't know if you recall this thread from earlier in the year. This editor has been disruptive from at least 3 IPs in the last three days; 2 were blocked (by Matty) and edits reverted but has returned immediately to redo. I would say there are WP:CIR and WP:TE issues as well as no effort to engage or heed advice. Matty has agreed with my suggestion that a long-term range block is needed but he is not certain how to go about it (nor me). I can probably cobble together a list of IPs but it will take some time, as things stand, for me to do so. Also pinging Robby as an interested / concerned / involved editor. Eagleash (talk) 19:44, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

I have also been involved in that today, which I have already reverted three times on Farouk Miya for the same type of editing. I'd already requested page protection on that article and I am fully aware on the 3RR rule so I won't revert that article while the disruption continues. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 19:57, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
I was just about to notify you Iggy having seen your RV at Bolasie. The IP has redone the edit twice since and I am now pushing the RV rule too. Eagleash (talk) 20:05, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
I'd suggest requesting a range block at ANI, if the IP edits from a range. If they jump around then we will have to page protect... GiantSnowman 20:44, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Several ranges so far and protection would be necessary for all the Rizespor players (and some others too). Eagleash (talk) 20:58, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
I've blocked 149.140.1.221 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) and reverted - let me know when they re-appear. Longer term, you will need to put together a concise but detailed history for ANI, seek wide rangeblocks/page protection, and maybe even worth creating an entry at WP:LTA. GiantSnowman 21:03, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Eagleash. I have Farouk Miya and Lebogang Phiri‎ on my watchlist and the IP makes disruptive edits at the articles daily. Robby.is.on (talk) 21:16, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Back, from yet another IP; this is the extent of the problem; a 'detailed history' will not be concise. Unfortunately I do not have the time, and experience with the disruptive F1 editor (over a 2-year-+ period) tells me ANI is not worth the cyberspace it's written upon. Eagleash (talk) 10:44, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
yes - blocked and reverted at 149.140.19.90 (talk · contribs · WHOIS); same range... GiantSnowman 18:45, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
And 176.54.3.18 which is part of 176.54.3.0/24 where two IP addresses are viewable. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 20:30, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Nicolas Galvis

Hi GS, the reason I removed that sentence (as I explained in the edit summary) is because all it says is he wanted to represent the national team (in 2019). He had already been receiving and accepting call-ups for Canada since 2017. It adds no encyclopedic value to say he wants to represent a national team he has already been representing. I feel it's already implied given he had already been accepting call-ups, so saying he would accept another call-up if offered isn't exactly noteworthy. We don't add ever time a player is called up (or in this case wants to be called up) if it adds nothing new. It's an encyclopedia not an almanac. Secondly, that source you added was already used in the article (Reference #12), so it's not like I was removing a new valid source from the article - it was already there and used. This GK is a bench warmer of excellence: his first Juventus U23 bench was in 2019, while he debuted for them a few days ago. His last match played for a Juventus youth team was in 2019, while his last Juventus youth team call up was in 2021. What do I write in his infobox? Dr Salvus 14:20, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

What did he do in between 2021 youth and 2022 U23 debut? Just be on the bench for U23? GiantSnowman 18:54, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, always warming the bench. Think he does have a first-team call up. Dr Salvus 19:33, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Being on the bench is not necessarily indicative of being a squad member (sometimes it is to make up numbers if there is an injury, or for experience for young players) but if a player was constantly on the bench for a season there is a good argument to have. So, with Raina, put either '2021-' (year he began being a squad member) or '2022-' (year he made his debut). In most cases I go with the latter. GiantSnowman 19:43, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
Raina stopped being a non-overage player in 2021, having been born in 2002. I'll go with the first. Dr Salvus 19:50, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I think the highlight are needed to truly show how distracting the flag icons can be when just scrolling through the page. If not yellow, then how about something like LightPink? ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 15:30, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

It's sufficiently emphasised. GiantSnowman 15:36, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Sufficiently emphasized for me means the flag disrupts the flow of the sentence due to its prominent colors and it stands out, no matter where in the text one is. This is why the MOS eschews its use and needs to demonstrate how distracting it is to the fullest degree. ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 15:49, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
It's fine as it is. GiantSnowman 15:51, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Johanna Quaas

Hi, GiantSnowman. You have looked at the Johanna Quaas article in January 2022 when it went to DYK. You made some changes regarding the {{lang}} templates I had used, and now I see what the problem was with what I was doing. MOS:ROMANIZATION says, in part, "A non-English proper name should generally not be italicized", and I didn't know that. There is a parameter that can be used in this way: |italic=unset.

The purpose for using the {{lang}} template is for screen readers to use correct pronunciation. So if the German proper names in the article are wrapped in this template, for example {{lang|de|italic=unset|Weißenfels}}, it should provide accessibility in that it will pronounce the German words correctly for those who use screen readers but not cause any interference for those who don't. I have a draft update in my sandbox. Do you have time to take a look? There's no rush. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 23:30, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Do you have a link to the draft please? GiantSnowman 21:23, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
oops... User:Eewilson/sandbox 3Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 21:26, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
Like I said, I've never seen it before and it seems excessive, but if it benefits accessibility then feel free to re-introduce it. GiantSnowman 21:28, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
Ideally, this would be transparent for editors and the code needed for screen readers to properly pronounce a non-default language would be built into the Wikimedia software (similar to how Google Translate can determine a language). But I doubt that's an easy (or perhaps even possible) task. Thanks for looking. I'll make the change and cite MOS:ROMANIZATION in the change description. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 21:38, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello! In regards to your latest edit on the footballer's article, I wanted to say that I originally added new roles for him with good intentions, since I had found several sources (for example, these two links) that cite his capability of playing as a full-back or a wing-back, as well... Teahouse aspersions that could need rapid deletion

Hi, I notice you're a "recently active admin" and wanted to skip the drama; would you mind taking a look at Wikipedia:Teahouse#Famous figure lying about age. I'm worried that the IP is heavily hinting that Stephen Sharer is somehow concealing his true age with a view to interacting inappropriately with kids ("grooming") which is an extremely serious allegation that shouldn't be made without really good evidence, even in a social talk place. But I might be over-interpreting. Cullen328 has seen it and not deleted, which suggests he was okay with it, and he's a bloke whose judgement I trust a great deal... Is that enough as to whom?

Please consult Teahouse for a clarification as to the current edits in Ennis Hayes.2603:8000:D300:D0F:A4A9:1E1:30A5:4340 (talk) 17:28, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

I am unsure why you keep on posting at Teahouse, when the correct venue is WT:FOOTBALL. GiantSnowman 18:47, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
This is an issue that concerns more than just football as truncated links are used in all WP articles.2603:8000:D300:D0F:A4A9:1E1:30A5:4340 (talk) 19:52, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Question

Hi, Giant Snowman

I have a question to which I can not find an answer and thought you may be able to help. I recently invested a lot of time in creating the article Botswana national football team results. However, many of the templates are not displaying correctly, including many (but not all) of The Fb templates. Any ideas what’s wrong? It doesn’t seem to be a syntax problem as far as I can tell. Thanks for any input in advance. Gri3720 (talk) 03:03, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

ooh, no idea I'm afraid - do you have a specific example? Might help me work it out with you. GiantSnowman 18:56, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
If you look at the head-to-head table the first few Fb templates appear correctly but any afterward don’t. Not even the simple {{reflist}} template is working properly. Gri3720 (talk) 00:08, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
oh yes I see what you mean - can't work it out either, maybe try WT:FOOTBALL? GiantSnowman 19:06, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
I've figured it out. Apparently, particularly when using a lot of templates, an article can actually be too large. I broke the article into three now. Thanks for your efforts. Gri3720 (talk) 22:56, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
Good to know! GiantSnowman 11:54, 23 December 2022 (UTC)

Hello GS, I was looking at the Marta Mason article, and I had a question. Most of the coverage I could find about her had to do with the fact that she left football for a period of time to be on some kind of singing TV show. Does this count as coverage towards WP:GNG, or because it is not about the primary thing that she does, which is being a footballer, does it not? I say this because for me, it would seem interesting that a footballer, on which the article is about their football career, is more notable for their appearance on a TV show than their football. Just a thought. Thank you! Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:18, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Coverage doesn't have to be about any particular thing, as long as it is significant. WP:BLP1E also applies, however. GiantSnowman 19:07, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Technical assistance

Hello there Mr. Snowman.

I'm at a loss, if you could help out... How do i mail you from WP? I've looked at all the fields, right and left, find nothing. RevampedEditor (talk) 15:29, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

The big button that says 'email this user' - or just post here, no need to email me, very few users do and I do not reply by email anyway. GiantSnowman 19:06, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

Nope, can't say that i find it! No worries, here goes nothing: just to notify you i have created this account, i stopped using the old one due to stalking but then forgot the password (and since the stalker seems to not be aware of my work IP I continued contributing extensively through it, there was a time when they were after me "cleaning up" through that one as one as my account and my home IP); i believe i'm not going against any guidelines (i.e. sockpuppetry) because the account was never blocked, i just stopped using it.

Maybe you remember who i am, you welcomed me 16 years ago and here we are both still. This time (hence my new name) i promise to be on my best behaviour summary-wise. If the stalker finds me again, that's when i'll stop editing for good.

Attentively --RevampedEditor (talk) 19:27, 22 December 2022 (UTC)

The source that says that he made his first appearance in 1993 is incorrect. See the links to the newspaper reports of Tamil Nadu's matches in 1991–92 Santosh Trophy (which is mentioned in the very next line in the Bobby article). I reverted back your edit. Tintin 13:33, 24 December 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a reliable source - what evidence do you have the third party source is incorrect? GiantSnowman 12:07, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
It would help if you actually read what I wrote above before getting into a revert war. Specifically about the newspaper reports linked in 1991–92 Santosh Trophy. https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YJBlAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lJ4NAAAAIBAJ&pg=833%2C1719285 is the report of Tamil Nadu's semifinal on March 7, 1992 where Bobby missed a kick in penalty shootout. Page 18 of https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=P9oYG7HA76QC&dat=19920302&printsec=frontpage&hl=en has a report of Tamil Nadu v Assam match on March 2, 1992 with references to Bobby. Please stay away from topics where you don't have any expertise. Tintin 17:20, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Firstly, if you make edits, explain them properly and include sources - you did neither. That is very basic stuff. Secondly, don't be so rude. GiantSnowman 17:23, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
I came became rude after the second revert, after mentioning both here and in the revert comment about the newspaper links in the 1991-92 Santosh Trophy article. I apologize for my comment above. Tintin 17:25, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
You did not provide any links until just now! I had to repeatedly ask for sources! Apology accepted but please think and edit differently in future. GiantSnowman 17:29, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Added a link to the 1992 newspaper (finally). Yep, could have done it before. Tintin 17:31, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

Ethan Mbappé

Hi, Why do you keep reverting my edit? Kiwi (talk) 13:58, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

because it is not, as far as I can see, supported by any sources. GiantSnowman 09:30, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

Bosun Lawal

Hi GS, Just a quick one regarding Bosun Lawal; SKB's website states that he played for the SKB under-15 and under-17 teams, and then the Bohemian's under-19 team (source). As he was a youth player, it obviously becomes a bit more difficult, but for simplicity's sake, lets say he was "contracted" to SKB, since Watford's announcement says that's where he was signed from (source). We could keep the article the way it is, but this neglects the fact that he did appear for Bohemian at youth level, or we could include a "/" as I had, in a similar way to FC Twente/Heracles Academie. Another option would be to have his "youthyears2 = → Bohemian", to symbolise that, while he played for Bohemian, he was "signed" to SKB. Let me know what you think, thanks. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 17:09, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

I think it would be simpler to have youth1 = SKB, and youth2 = Bohemians? GiantSnowman 09:31, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

Danny Collinge

I don't believe this page meets notability criteria, as never played in football league. Would be interested in your view? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Collinge Telfordbuck (talk) 17:45, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

I think it probably meets GNG, with this plus the FA and Bundesliga pieces on him. GiantSnowman 09:15, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Callum Doyle and other topics

Hello! Thank you for helping me out with Callum Doyle's page: I admit I'm still slowly learning the fundamentals of editing and formatting on this site, so I actually appreciate everyone who makes me acknowledge my mistakes. I've just made a slight "counter-edit" on that article, though, as the "stub" template was likely not necessary anymore (or at least, Rater suggested so).

On a side note, I think Aidomo Emakhu might already meet notability criteria, since he has played several games in European competitions this season, including one in the UECL group stage. I think I'll have enough time to help you with it, if you need it!

Oltrepier (talk) 14:55, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

Oh, and by the way, I wish you a Happy New Year! Oltrepier (talk) 14:57, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
Same to you! Thanks for explaining about Doyle, and feel free to improve the Emakhu draft if you wish. GiantSnowman 16:28, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

I was reverted for "unexplained re-formatting of infobox", when i actually completed cleanup of vandalism by the 179 IP idiot that went to town in article since June.

Sorry for helping, happy 2023! 2001:8A0:7643:2400:A920:71BE:E6D:8629 (talk) 15:07, 31 December 2022 (UTC)
