South East Asian ethnic groups- Hi, thanks for your interest, but without going into too much depth, it's not "unsourced" to point out the large Chinese populations (as opposed to Indian ones) that exist within South East Asia. This article is after all, about ethnic groups of people and not cultural influences. ;)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Live Article Went to Draft![edit]

Hi Fylindfotberserk - Please look into this article - JioCinema. It has all the supported info with reference links. This article was live but then moved into the draft and the reason says (out of process move of AFC draft without proper review). Please help me with this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reenajha07 (talkcontribs) 07:33, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Reenajha07: The article is well sourced. It will be moved to mainspace after proper review as explained by Bearcat. No need to worry. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:06, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Fylindfotberserk (Bhai), I don't know why you added this empty space. Taukeerppw (talk) 12:24, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Taukeerppw: Bhai, I added this space because the other external links above it, all had a space between the * and the external link. It is to maintain parity. If you wish, you could remove space from all the four external links. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:42, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reply Bhai. Taukeerppw (talk) 13:01, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citizenship Amendment Act protests[edit]

Can you help copy edit Citizenship Amendment Act protests. The objective is to get rid of the tag, since this is on the main page as WP:ITN. --DBigXray 15:55, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

reFill[edit]

Hi, I notice you use reFill. This is a useful tool but sometimes introduces errors, most frequently inserting the unsupported parameter "|deadurl=y" instead of "|url-status=dead", such as here. I would ask you to preview your edits and resolve any issues before submitting. Thanks. --John B123 (talk) 20:20, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@John B123: I'm aware of the recent changes made to the CS params, but totally forgot that reFill didn't get its |dead-url= updated to |url-status=. Thanks for the reminder. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 08:18, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

South Asian ethnic groups[edit]

The vast majority of Sylhetis see themselves as Bengalis and not a separate ethnic group.UserNumber (talk) 10:54, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@UserNumber: Then why are we having a separate Sylhetis article? Whether Sylhetis are Bengalis or a different ethnicity is debatable. The position of Sylheti should be discussed in the Talk:Sylhetis. As for vast majority seeing themselves as Bengalis is concerned, is it not someway related to Bangladesh govt. declaring every citizen of Bangladesh is a Bengali in the past? As a comparison, People of Bihar are called Biharis (the demonym), when in fact there are 3 main ethnicities in Bihar: Bhojpuri, Magahi and Maithili and no Bihari ethnicity. All these are kept separate in the South Asian ethnic groups article, which is only a list and should be in conformity with the linked articles. Apart from Maithili language, Bhojpuri and Maithili are considered dialects of Hindi. Same with a lot of other Indian states. In Pakistan, there exists a Saraiki community which was considered to be a Punjabi sub-ethnicity, since they speak a language which is considered both a dialect and a separate language, similar to the situation of Sylhetis. Regards. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:46, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Of course there should be a separate article as it is a sub-ethnicity like Saraiki. We can't blame the Bangladesh govt. as even before 1971, Sylheti was not a separate ethnic group. Regards. -UserNumber (talk) 15:08, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd like to apologize for assuming you were a new editor on the Help Desk. I just woke up, haven't had any tea, can't see straight and forgot who posted last night. Sorry if I sounded like you know nothing, and told you about BRD! I will look at the edits. It could be that your "personal analysis" is in contention, if you are not a linguist.--Quisqualis (talk) 15:05, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Quisqualis: That's totally OK mate. To be frank I haven't even checked WP:HD after my last comment. I should have been more precise when I asked you to direct me to "someone who knows about this stuff" (suffering from flu since yesterday). I was looking for a linguist actually. I was concerned that this edit by the IP is a personal analysis and WP:OR, based on their editing style which looked rather novice. I mean the pronunciation they tried to add wouldn't even show in the read mode, not to mention Pa-tal is not an IPA standard format. That's why I asked them to bring a text-based source. I've opened a discussion at Talk:Dev Patel#IPA - surname pronunciation and asked Broman178 to help me with the IPA, based on the video added by the IP. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:41, 6 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Goa - South India?[edit]

I see that the Goa page still lists its location as being on the southwestern cost of India. Is there a reason for this given that it is not in South India? Goingoan (talk) 22:53, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Goingoan, We went through a big discussion regarding this at WP:INB and agreed to have a general definition as per Encyclopedia Britannica. Govt. definitions were not considered valid as far as general definitions are considered in the said consensus since different institutions seems to have different methodologies to identify a state/region. Moreover, a geographical definition was given priority over those govt. definitions. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 07:47, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I’ve tried to respond there but don’t see my response. Suggest we re-open the discussion. Goingoan (talk) 13:26, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No need to reopen it. We have agreed to that WP:CONSENSUS. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:07, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just a question.[edit]

Is the UK Companies House register considered a public record? I would think so, but I’m not sure, because many BLP articles I’ve seen use this as a source. R71B (talk) 15:59, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

NE wasn't under any sultanate[edit]

You mentioned on Bengal page - "note that Bengal Presidency and sultanate included Assam, Bihar, Odisha and NE India".

No part of Assam (& other NE regions) were under any sultanate or the Mughals, please refer to any historical source.

It became a part of Bengal presidency (British raj) after 1826 (Yandaboo Treaty) & was later separated again as Assam province. And most refugees came after 1947 (after the formation of modern India), some did came during the British raj (mostly Muslim ones).

Bengal in modern context would only mean West Bengal & Bangladesh. Tizen03 (talk) 14:51, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I made it clear in my edit summary that Bengal in modern administrative context would mean West Bengal and Bangladesh. I'm only against the assertion that all Bengalis in NE are refugees which is clearly not the case. Bengal sultanate under Husain Shah controlled Kamata Kingdom and ruled Assam and Tripura. See [5]. Many Bengali Hindus settled in Assam during British era and got into white collar jobs. As for Barak Valley, that was a botched move by Gopinath Bordoloi and Abdul Matlib Mazumdar regarding Sylhet. Unless you have nationalistic tendencies, you wouldn't deny that. Besides, it is totally illogical to think modern borders were same as historical borders, not to mention, people have been settling in nearby regions since ancient times. There is a reason why some Bihari speakers are native to Bengal, Odisa and vice versa. Some Punjabis are native to Himachal, Haryana, Kashmir. These are not because of recent migrations, but historical. Also there is a recent problem of Nagas encroaching upon Bodo lands in Assam. Oh.. FYI, I was called an Ahom boy, Kalita, as well so I'm aware how's the situation in Assam between all those ethnic groups calling each other names in Wikipedia, just because I try to take a neutral approach which nationalists do not like. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:37, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I get your point.

Historical borders & current borders are different no doubt. Assam did lost territories to Arunachal, Bengal & a few others, similar to how Greeks lost territories to different ethnicities, because of historical reasons.

But one correction - entire Kamata wasn't ruled by the Sultanate. Kamata was divided into Koch-Behar & Koch-Hajo. Koch-Behar became a vessal state of the foreign Muslim invaders but Koch-Hajo stayed independent. Even today Koch-Behar is a part of West Bengal. And the Koch-Rajbonshis living there are confused about their identity & believes Bengalis & "Assamese" are destroying their identity, even though they are actually Assamese just like their Koch-Rajbonshis counterparts of Assam. Koch-Rajbongshi & Kalitas are the biggest ethnic groups in Western Assam. Even the Baro-Bhuyas who were independent identifies themselves as Assamese, but the ones under the Sultanate & Mughals address themselves as Bengali. The Sultanate, Mughals & the British did shape modern borders of South Asia no doubt about that.

I'm only against those who tries to fabricate history. Like how someone edited the Bengal page to make Assam & Tripura as a part of Bengal. Even though most part of Assam was always independent. The part that Assam lost to them (foreign invaders) was lost permanently, be it North Bengal or North Bangladesh (Rangpur) etc. Assamese aren't claiming Arunachal even though most of it was a part of Assam under Kamarupa (Ancient) & Sutiya (Medieval), even today many places are of Assamese origin including Itanagar (their capital). Neutral... Tizen03 (talk) 19:10, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, you'd understand what would happen if the people of Ptana start claiming the whole of the subcontinent and Afghanistan as Bihar since Mauryans ruled all these regions with centre in Patliputra. Same with Maratha empire, Pala empire, Rashtrakutas, Mughals, British, etc. Note that all these current names of major linguistic groups or regions in South Asia, did not exist in ancient times, especially for the northern part of the subcontinent.
This source clearly mentions that Husain Shah controlled Kamarup alongwith Kuch-Behar, which they seized from Kamata Kings. According to the source, the eastern boundary of Shah's kingdom extended upto Arakan and included Tripura. Pala Empire itself was based in northern Bengal and were patrons of proto-Bengali language. The regions of Koch Behar and Pragjyotisha were captured by the Pala Empire in the 9th century (forgetting the exact timeframe). Kamarupa included even parts of Bihar, Nepal and Bhutan in its heyday. The region of northern Bengal and parts of western Kamrup was part of Shunga empire. North Bengal was part of Maurya empire and before that Nanda empire.
The Rajbongshi itself is a composite group with affinities to Nepalis, Bengalis, Assamese and other groups living near them. Koch on the other hand seems to have maintained their tribal entity. Even the Rajbongshi language is identified as a Bengali dialect as per Indian govt [6] though their are sources that categorize it as Assamese.
As for "Assamese", it is a "demonym" and not an ethnic term and is based on nationalistic lines, which came into being only after the arrival of foreigner Ahoms who consolidated their power after they defeated Kings of Kamarupa. Since it is a foreign imposed term, some descendants of older kingdoms like Koches, Bodos, Chutiyas, Dimasas would have problem with that. It gets apparent in Wikipedia as well as IRL (Bodo identity for example). I got a huge amount of backlash from these people when I supported sourced content, which they interpreted as pro-Ahom. Then there are other anti-Aryans who called me a Kalita/Brahmin dog for supporting the Indo-Aryan descent theory of Bhaskarbarman, despite I supported the inclusion of all reliable origin theories. This is the reason I rarely delve in Assam related topics even when invited. It is literally a war there. Just 1-2 months back some Dimasa was edit warring with me, removing the mention of Assamese as the official language of West Karbi Anglong. According to them, it is only Dimasa!
As of claiming things, all the neighboring countries claim something as their own be it Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or Nepal. I've seen Pakistanis trying to own Urdu, which originated in northern India. Bangladeshis claim things that originated in Indian Bengal as their own, like some philosophy, cuisine, etc. One Odia fellow was adamant that Netaji was an Odia. Although athnic Bengali, that person was partly correct since Netaji was born in Cuttack which is presently part of Odisha but wrong at the same time since Odisha was itself part of Bengal Presidency. Now is Odisha part of West Bengal? Obviously not since West Bengal is not equal to Bengal Presidency. What I believe, after searching a lot of stuff in the net and staying in all Indian states, getting both good and bad receptions from others, is that the concept f nationalism within India and for that matter the whole world, is rather complex and 'Ethnic Nationalism' is a retarded concept. Dollar to rupee conversion[edit]

Sorry to disturb you sir, I was wondering what was the final consensus on using billion/mil in south indian movies where crores are preferred and articles which are not of high importance. Could you take a look at this Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Thundermage117 (talk) 11:22, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Thundermage117: Thanks for communicating. Although MOS:COMMONALITY talks of using universally known 'millions/billions' instead of 'lakhs/crores', most people in Indian film articles are not comfortable with such usage. Problem is we only have a guideline which suggest we should not use conversion templates in Infobox, but there is another WP:CONSENSUS "crore" which supports usage of lakh/crore but with conversion templates. Since the guideline and consensus are contradictory, it becomes necessary to get to the talk page or discuss it at WP:ICTF. We had a discussion here. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:10, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: Thank you for replying. I have started a discussion at WP:ICTF after you suggested it. Basically the talk is inconclusive on the usage of crores. Thundermage117 (talk) 15:42, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thundermage117: Nice. That's been a pain in the arse for so long. I typically write crores/lakhs in the infobox and many in ICTF seem to favour that, arguing the gargantuan nature of Indian film industry . - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:54, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You're very welcome User:Fylindfotberserk! Thank you for answer. I'll try to create a article of Heramba Kingdom. Actually , Mediaeval Cachar was Heramba kingdom and Sylhet kingdom was Hidimba kingdom.DinaBasumatary (talk) 16:17, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
DinaBasumatary, If the topic is notable, then go ahead. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:22, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: I do not see any difference in Heramba and Hidimba kingdoms. They are names that were created very late in the life of the Kachari kingdom. Chaipau (talk) 19:26, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaipau: That's why I asked DinaBasumatary to take WP:CONTENTFORK into consideration. Their edit summaries look familiar, isn't it? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 07:20, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk: DinaBasumatary is a very new ID. I wonder who it is. Chaipau (talk) 09:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nahtrav, Referencing is very important. One of the pillars of Wikipedia. Always remember to add ref. Go through WP:REFBEGIN. Secondly, sign your comments with 4 ~ . Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:04, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Saina Nehwal caste Reply[edit]

U did great job! I wonder when our society will get rid of this dirty caste system -_- Zoglophie (talk) 15:30, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Zoglophie: Thanks. Thanks to South Asian people's tendency to POV push their caste in articles of notable people, a decision had been taken at WP:INB to not include caste in a BLP unless the subject of the article clearly states that in an interview. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:35, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aniket kr. Shaw: Only the challenges section seem to have neutrality problem. Not the whole article. I've added that tag there. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 07:51, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
