Medal of Freedom List

Flyguy, very nice job on the Presidential Medal of Freedom List. Being a frustrated librarian (in another life, I guess :-)) I went ahead and re-arranged the major categories. The List does look much better without all of the presenting Presidents added. Let's see how long it takes for someone to protest this change :-). I still think that the recipients' names within the categories should also be alphabetically. This would take a little more time to change. Any thoughts on this? -- Michael David (talk) 17:39, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the response, Flyguy. Another thought: Is there anywhere on the List Page where a message such as, "All Categories, Sub-Categories & Recipients' names are listed alphabetically" could be posted? (A note to the readers & a strong hint to the editors :-)) -- Michael David (talk) 19:07, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
Your suggestion about the wording of the statement is a good one. I plan to spend a little more time today and see how much work I can get done on the List. I think that most of the Recipients's names are, already, pretty well organized. -- Michael David (talk) 19:29, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the criteria are for featured list status, but a lot of work has been done in researching many of the early recipients. And there are still several recipients that I'm still trying to get vital information on. I've been in touch with the Library of Congress, and at least 4 Presidential Libraries; in addition to the NY Public Library and Pratt Library in Baltimore. They have all been very helpful. It has been a real detective adventure since, over the years, the Medal has been known by different names, and in some cases, the Medal was presented by persons other than the President himself. And, the Category of Espionage/Service to Country has been particulary interesting. -- Michael David (talk) 20:08, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary, which you forgot to do before saving your recent edit to John Kruk. Doing so helps everyone to understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. Trafford09 (talk) 18:53, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Tip of the day...

Please summarize your work using the Edit summary box

If you make anything other than a minor edit to an article, it helps others if you fill in the edit summary. Edit summaries are visible in the page history, watchlists, and on Recent changes, so they help other users keep track of what is happening to a page.

If you use section editing, the summary box is filled in with the section heading by default (in gray text), which you can follow with more detail. You also can put links to articles in the edit summary. Just put double brackets around [[the article title]] like you would normally. The summary is limited to 255 characters, so many people use common abbreviations, such as sp for correcting spelling mistakes, rm for remove, ce for copy-edit, etc.

Brooke Hart Article Photos

Really excellent work adding the photos to the Freedom Medal List. In addition to being informative, it really adds to the beauty of the page.

While we're on the subject of photos :-), I found some terrific photos relating to the Brooke Hart Article. They are here:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2010/09/12/2010-09-12_they_had_it_coming_gov_glad_mob_lynched_killers.html

I have never uploaded a photo to a WP article, and I wouldn't have a clue how to if I wanted to; and I don't think my geriatric old friend of a browser could do it anyway. When you get a chance would you take a look at this, and see if it's possible to put them in the article. Thanks for all of your great work. -- Michael David (talk) 19:41, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip on the photos, Flyguy. I'm going to try and contact someone at the San Jose News and see if they will give us permission to add the photos. Also, I see you were able to add the "alphabetized" statement to the beginning of the Medal List page. Thanks. The List page is looking better than ever! -- Michael David (talk) 02:06, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
  • I just did as you suggested with the link you gave me, and found this:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=public%2Bdomain+Brooke+Hart&btnG=Search

Does this mean the photos are public domain? -- Michael David (talk) 03:28, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

That single photo of Brooke Hart appears to be in the public domain. Would you be willing to upload it into the Brooke Hart Article? -- Michael David (talk) 20:37, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Removals from own talk page

Hi. I don't accept your criticism, but you're entitled to your own opinion. My concern is to see consensus followed, hence my warnings / hints (not uncivil) on your talk page, which at least until recently you didn't appear to be heeding.

The link you left me - wp:TPO is the one for article talk pages. The one for our own user talk pages - wp:OWNTALK - contains this:

"Users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred. ... The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user."

I assume your comment is to be taken as a warning. I've read it, and choose to delete it. You are equally at liberty to delete this or anything else - past or future - on your own talk page - as I shall be on mine. I chose to delete rather than archive it, as I dispute the thrust of your point, and disapprove of the vocabulary that you used (which you had the decency to concede could have been more eloquent - but nonetheless you restored it, word for word). Editors can still access & read it of course in the page history. If you care to repost your comments on your own talk page, (preferably toned down), that would be a more acceptable compromise.

I've been away for a couple of days, & now it's late at night, here. I'll send you a more complete reply when I've had time to compose one. There is some common ground we share - and I confess a couple of your recent edit summaries made me chuckle out loud, you may be pleased to know.

Until then, I would ask you to be more diplomatic, despite your views. Trafford09 (talk) 23:57, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for waiting - enjoy. Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 16:29, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. BTW, don't forget you can remove (or equally archive) anything on this page that you wish to. Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 09:22, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Medal of Freedom List - Did I Screw It Up?

Flyguy,

Would you please take a look at the Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients List and see if my last edit screwed up somehow. I was trying to add a reference for the latest addition. The count says I subtracted -1,783 characters!?! I can't figure out what went wrong or how to fix it. Thanks -- Michael David (talk) 01:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Response to Medal of Freedom post

Flyguy,

Thank you for undoing my screw-up. In case you're wondering why I am responding with a new Section: That is a part of the problem that caused my screw-up in the first place. Short explanation: I am working with a very early version of Internet Explorer on a Mac. Because of recent techincal changes to the WP site I no longer have Section Headings in the Articles and, consequently, no edit buttons that enable me to edit just a Section of an Article - OR a Talk Page. I plan to change browers soon but, until then, I can edit just a whole page - or nothing. I guess the problem with the Freedom Medal Article was its size. That's the best guess I can make right now. Thanks, again for your help, Flyguy. Be healthy in the New Year. -- Michael David (talk) 03:53, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:ESPN Films CLR Pos.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Replaceable fair use File:Osgood Headshot.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Osgood Headshot.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MilborneOne (talk) 18:02, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
