I noticed that Indian Railways is under featured article review here and may be demoted. It needs some help, especially with citations, both tagged and paragraphs that have no inline citations. British Guiana 1c magenta

Sorry, but I still don't understand. I have the same book and in mine it simply reads "Regarded by many as the world's most famous stamp." as a complete sentence with a capital R but no brackets. Okay, I just now saw your note. You seem to have answered the question ("Why?") already. The source says,

"Regarded by many as the world's most famous stamp."

This is not a complete sentence, so the article added a noun and a verb to the quotation, to make it readable:

"The British Guiana 1c magenta is "[r]egarded by many as the world's most famous stamp."

When we work something like this into a sentence, we need to replace the capital 'R' with a small 'r'. Otherwise it would be very awkward. It is customary to put brackets around what has been changed so that the reader will know that has been altered. Fconaway (talk) 01:48, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

By the way, if the bracket troubles you, perhaps the quotation marks and the brackets could be removed. The footnote would serve to document the opinion expressed in the statement. Personally, I feel any such "wow" rating is foolish. It's kind of like tagging "the greatest composer", "the worst of the worst gangsters" or "the best architect". Opinions will vary. I understand your logic. I think it is a complete sentence even if it's not good English. In any case, I agree the quote is not particularly helpful. It is also probably wrong as the Penny Black must be more famous. The start can be re-written just to say it is one of the great rarities of philately or something similar. The stamp is unique (probably), which is more than rare, and it has an interesting story that goes with it. The really expensive, legendary and rare stamps seem to have colorful stories, such as "someone was murdered because another collector wanted the stamp." Or, "the governor's daughter needed some stamps to send out invitations to a ball". This is the philatelists' "lore", which enhances the value of some stamps beyond what other stamps of equal rarity will command. Fconaway (talk) 22:12, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

About the killer cancellation

Thanks. You sure picked up on that quickly! I don't know whether the scan could be useful to illustrate the idea of a "killer" (everybody seems to have his or her own idea about what a "killer" is) but I simply came across it when I was looking through my stuff. It has an interesting story to tell.

Originally I thought the "All India" cancellations (1873 onward) would be good, because they are heavy and cover most of the stamp. On second thought they were designed to show very clearly where each letter originated. A "killer" is a cancellation that shows no place, date or time of mailing, but which is heavy enough to prevent the stamp's reuse. There are lots of these on the early Indian and Straits stamps. An Indian article

I found Main road town which is completely unreferenced but I could not find any confirming sources. Is this a proper term, or even a hoax? ww2censor (talk) 19:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

The term is new to me. I've never lived in India, so I don't know whether the term is in widespread use; but the article claims that a town along a highway has "better basic amenities [as] compared to [those of] typical villages." Many WP articles about various towns in India claim that when a promised highway eventually reaches them, all will be well and prosperous (expansion when geared into the larger economy). Of course, the town will lose its enclave, and those who depend on local custom will have to change occupations. It's an old issue in India; Gandhi's spinning wheel was emblematic of rebuilding the local, traditional economy.

Actually, "main road town" might apply very well to many places in the United States, which have little else to recommend them. When superhighways replace the main roads, they are left in the dust like modern ghost towns.Fconaway (talk) 19:49, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Sambhaji Brigade the Facist Nazi organisation as it needs to be presented as reported in newspapers

How does one write a article for JeM, LeT, PWG or Hizbul? does one have an article on wikipedia which puts their side, propoganda and ideology with all the support and glorification of violence? Well these organisations need to be portryed what people think of them and not the alleged supporters and members wish to write about them. The article is about only one group, whether we like them or not. It is not about JeM, LeT, PWG or Hizbul, and what we think of them is not relevant. We cannot have an article which simply presents propaganda for or against Sambhaji Brigade or any other group. Instead of casting epithets, describe their activities, what they say and what they do. Denouncing them or adoring them is not what Wikipedia is about. We are an encyclopedia: instead of opinion, we aim to present information in an even-handed way. Every editor is required to support his edits by identifying a reliable source (WP:RS) for an edit, with a citation which others can see and verify. That is, present unbiased evidence. Thanks for the identification, which would not be obvious to most readers of Wikipedia. Now to presenting the caption: this seems to be a generic problem. The 'Infobox City Pakistan' doesn't seem to allow an image caption. For example, the Multan article uses 'Infobox City Pakistan', and its image doesn't have a caption. Yes, it is WP:OR. It seems overblown, speculative, and not well grounded in logic or fact (even if original research were allowable). The claim of an "academic consensus" on thia had no reliable source, but now it is presented as an "academic opinion". There's nothing academic about it. I've seen this sort of thing on several other pages, as well. In one case ("Battle of the Median Border") when WP:OR was removed almost nothing remained.

Can any secure knowledge of Porus ever be had? The basic texts are Greek, written well after the events by people who were not there, with a "slant". Likewise, Tod's work is that of a British (EIC) military "intelligence" officer with an axe to grind. There's not much. I'm trying to find a reliable "secondary" source. Well to be honest to you it is common knowledge here that he was an ancestor of the Katoch Rajas of Kangra, i'm in contact with the son of Maharaja Aditya Dev Chand Katoch and this is the information i got from him -

1] Potolomi the official scribe of Alexander the Great's records. 2] Any Kangra District Gazzeettere of befor 1947. 3] Maharaja Sansar Chand recorded history states that " He possesed a brass plate of the treaty between Porus and Alexander" This was officially seen and recorded by Col. O.Brian. 4] Col. Cunnigham also recorded the same to be in the posession of Maharaja Jai Chand. Cunnigham was the official British Officer incharge of recording the history of the Punjab Hill States, similar to Col.Todd in Rajputana. 5] Porus the actual word has no ref. in Sanskrit or modern day history. But PHEGUS a title given to my ancestor by Alexander which ment MOUNTAIN LION in the Greek Language has been distorted over the period of time to Porus. 6] Read Dr. P.N Oak's correction of Indian History.

Also note that there is NO SANNI Raja in the Punjab, there never was. I can mail you hard copies of the ref. material we have. Kindly ask the Sanni that he is refering to material of the Rajputana which had nothing to do with Alexander & the 1st records of the Rajputana are of the 3rd cent AD 400YEARS after Porus. Also there exists a Temple in Indora Kangra which has a figure of a Greek Godess [ today prayed to as a Devi / Shakti ] built by Alexanders cousin who was married to Porus's younger son. I dont think a single Sanni has even visited this temple. Traditionally the Beas belt has always been under the control of the Katoch Dynasty and it is from here that Alexander turned back, no Sanni ever ruled this area. This is the same River where Alexander fought Porus, why would he call him MOUNTAIN Lion if Porus was not from the Mountains. The Mountain valley above the Beas has ALWAYS BEEN RULED BY THE KATOCH, so where do the Sanni's fit in. The Mughal court From the time of Barbur have mentained & mentioned in their record's that the Katoch Family has always ruled this region from the time's of unrecorded history. That is why the conquest of Kangra was considered to be of major importance.

Also chk out, Katochgarh Multan [Pakistan], even after the Muslim invasion and till date the oldest city of ASIA has a fort called Katochgarh. Ask the SAINIS to disprove this. As they might argue with you that the Katoch Empire did not exceed the Beas boundries. TRIGARTHA, JULLANDHRA and MULTAN have been historically recorded as KATOCH Kingdoms. The Mythiological claim of the clan is KUTCH-KHADI-MULTAN which means from LEH TO KARANCHI.

Lets see if we can make something out of this, although in most books on Kangra it is mentioned that the Col. was presented with a potrait of Alexander by Maharaja Sansar Chand II's son Anirudh Chand who was a contemprary of Ranjit Singh. Actually, I restored both of these categories -- see here. They had been deleted by DShamen on August 11. Now I see someone else has again deleted them. There seems to be a logical issue here: see WP:CAT, which I haven't fully understood. It seems Coleford would be included, automatically, in both Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire. Postal convention states of India

Thanks for doing this! Your illustration of one of the Alizah Press overprints for Gwalior is a nice touch. The Convention States have been a difficult and complex area, with so many type varieties (and fakes). This will be a real service to Indian philately. Congratulations! There's a curious overprint for Jaipur, not found in the standard catalogs. It is believed to have originated from the Public Works department. It might be considered a local overprint, rather than a convention states stamp, although it is found in two colors overprinted on a British India issue (in this respect, like the Convention States issues). I will endeavor to get a good illustration and a related article from Princely States Report. "Princely States Report" has an article by David Heppell, at <http://princelystates.com/CurrentIssue/rc-04-01.shtml> which says these were overprinted by the Public Works Department of Jaipur, for security -- much as private companies often overprinted their initials to discourage any misuse of their postage. However, the "composite" illustration in Heppell's article does not have a full stop after "Service." My collection includes an original overprinted stamp with the "full stop" after Service. Sorry for the delay in replying. A javascript was preventing me from editing since yesterday. I had to get rid of everything in my gadgets to be able to edit. Firstly, thank you for the kind words, coming from a reputed philatelist and editor it means a lot to me. I'm very happy you liked the article. Secondly, my boss who is a very nice guy and has a nice collection of British India and convention states rekindled my childhood interest in philately.

He has promised me more stamps from each convention state to scan. The aim is to provide a gallery for each of the states. I also plan to add later on a section on errors and varieties as well as one on watermarks and typescripts/overprints. My boss has provided me with Stewart-Wilson's two ninteenth century pamphlets on convention states which he has kindly allowed me to upload to www.archive.org. You can find the links in the reference section.

May I request that you to kindly add information from any other resource you may have. I am fast running out of reference material. Your Jaipur stamp sounds very interesting. You have done all of us an extraordinary service by uploading the two vols. by Stewart-Wilson, which were in danger of becoming unavailable. I know that was hard work, justified only by the significance of Stewart-Wilson's publication, a pioneering work for 1887 and 1888! Discrepancies in years

Hi there,

I recently borrowed a copy of Jal Cooper's Stamps of India (1968 i.e. third ed). On page 176 it has a table with years of issue & discontinuance for stamps of Indian States.

Seeing that you are the major contributor to Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_India, I wanted to know if you had added the table of Indian native & feudatory states. There are some discrepancies. For example, Alwar. The wiki article lists Alwar's period as 1877-1899. Jal Cooper gives it as 1877 as year of issue and 1902 as the year of discontinuance. I presume your period reflects the dates of first and last stamp issue while Cooper's date lists the year of discontinuation when the stamps were no longer considered as valid.

However, the table data is not referenced. Can you tell me where you got the information? If its Stanley Gibbons, a note to that effect will help clarify the issue for readers.

Citation bot

My best guess (although I could be wrong) is that you are the editor who is activating the citation bot to make incorrect edits to medical articles.[1] [2] If it is you, please stop. We don't use capital case in article titles on Wikipedia-- we use sentence case (which means we don't capitalize the words in the article titles). And, most medical articles use the Diberri format, which uses only one author field. I have had to revert citation bot edits many times, and am now instead going to add a bots deny field to prevent this incorrect edits. Not sure what is at issue here, or why Dasara should be a disambiguation page, so I have removed my edits. It seems rather bland, as is, saying only that Dasara is an important celebration. As the meaning varies, meaning a single day in some places and two weeks in others, it seemed best to avoid duplication, contradiction or WP:content forking by keeping the content just on the two pages Navratri, about the festival as a whole, and Vijayadashami about the 10th day. At present the page Vijayadashami does include an overview of Dasara celebrations in different parts of India, so I suppose that whole section should be moved to Navratri, leaving Vijayadashami to concentrate on the 10th day. Or can you find a way to distinguish what should be on a third page "Dasara"? – Fayenatic London 12:32, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I do not know whether Dasara, or its analogs, which are found all over India, are an observance comparable to Easter or Passover, but in my opinion the present treatment diminishes their significance.Fconaway (talk) 21:22, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

• redirect "Dasara" to Navratri, and
• move the current content to Dasara (disambiguation)

Citation bot

It is not a good idea to simply apply citation bot to a range of articles without checking what it does - the bot still has many bugs and while adding some details, breaks others (just one example [3], but I saw too many recently, which is why this post). Yes, I also use the bot in "edit mode", and read through the results. You will see that I sometimes revert the edits if they don't look right. I never apply the bot to a range of articles, but often I find a related subject in the editing. If I have allowed a bad edit, I will have to be more careful. Thanks for alerting me! Saola sighting

Hello Fconaway. :-D
One of the weird things I find on Wikipedia is that I go to a page to update it and at exactly the same time, another editor beats me to it! :-o

This is what not-quite-just-happened with the Saola. When I started checking the page to see if it had been updated, you hadn't added the info about the recent sighting. By the time I had checked, (admit I got side tracked checking out at a string of edits in October that doubled the pages size) you had already done the update! Here's my source if it's of any interest [4], now ≈8 hours old.

Maybe it's worth pointing out this is the first Saola sighting in 15 years?

Yes, the British are ahead of us, chronologically, and I just happened to notice it. It is an AP story, which hasn't hit the US media yet.

I put the item up for WikiNews, also. It is newsworthy, even though the animal was photographed in September, actually. So far we don't have an explanation for the delay of the story for over a month.

It seems the animal has not been seen alive, in the wild, more recently than 15 years ago. However, it seems others, neither alive nor in the wild, have been seen. I'm guessing more information will be forthcoming.Fconaway (talk) 11:39, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I will remove the line from the text, for now, pending verification from other sources. The cited source is from a journalist's interview with Chaudhry Mohammad Razzaq, wildlife and fisheries department director of Azad Jammu Kashmir. He said the Asiatic lion, Panthera leo persica, has been reported from Deva Vatala National Park repeatedly over the last five years. Most recently, on January 31 2014, it was reported being seen twice by two people, including a trained wildlife observer, once at very close range. If these reports can be confirmed, they are of great significance, as an indication that the lions have maintained a separate population.

Asiatic lions are living outside the Gir forest, not only in zoos. They are in four separate areas, three of which are outside of the Gir Forest protected area. Also, last year the Supreme Court of India ordered the relocation of a group of lions to Madhya Pradesh, which was to have been completed by now (i.e., within six months from the date of the decision). At least one other wild population is needed for population safety, for maximizing genetic diversity, and in terms of ecology (re-establishing the lion as a component of the fauna in its former range). Bugwah, Bangladesh

Hi Fconaway, I have a question about an article you created in October 2011, Bugwah. It cites no sources. The article says it's a town in Rajshahi Division, although the coordinates in the article became part of newly formed Rangpur Division in 2010. The coordinates suggest that it's in Kurigram District, but I'm unable to locate it in the 2011 census table for that district, through GeoNames Search, on Google maps, on OpenStreetMaps, on the Kurigram Sadar Upazila or Ulipur Upazila local government engineering department maps, on hathitrust.org (e.g. British India gazetteers), in Banglapedia, or on the Bengali-language Wikipedia. @Fconaway: Thanks! With that additional information I found that the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency records "Bugwah" as a variant of "Bagua, Anantapur", which is a village in Hatia Union, Ulipur Upazila, Kurigram District, Rangpur Division, Bangladesh, very close to the coordinates in the article. Anantapur appears on the upazila maps, and appears on Google maps as Onantapur.

Bagua, Anantapur is quite small, so I'm not sure that it is the same as the early Indian post office using killer cancel 158. There are at least five other Baguas in what is now Bangladesh, some of which seem more likely candidates for a match. Our local philatelic library has a copy of Jal Cooper's Early Indian Cancellations, so I'll check that as soon as I get a chance. Worldbruce (talk) 18:16, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Good progress! Jal Cooper's Early Indian Cancellations may not have what you are looking for. The latest word on this is Denis R. Martin, Numbers in Early Indian Cancellations, 1855-1884. I would look it up, but my copy is in storage. I hope your library has it. Remember, it must be specifically the B/158 in the Bengal Octagon, or "Bengal spiderweb": that is Renouf's Type [7], which would also be Cooper's Type 7. Scinde Dawk‎ stamps

Did you see the Scinde Dawk‎ stamp was deleted? I've asked the deleting admin to restore so I can try and rescue it as I'm pretty sure we can find a source or another image. I did not notice it until it was removed from articles I watch after it had been removed. Did you happen to upload the original? Yes, I originally uploaded this image on English-language Wikipedia, with a claim of fair use. I did not say it was Public Domain, because I did not know the original source. The listing said, "2006-09-29 02:40 Fconaway 347×370×8 (48598 bytes) This image is of a postage stamp. The copyright for the original image is unknown, and there may be other restrictions on its reproduction. It is believed that this use of this image is fair use because * used to illustrate the Red Scinde District Dawk". However, the file is now on Commons, where it was uploaded by Magnus Manske in 2007. Today it shows a claim of PD, as it showed a stamp which was a product of the United Kingdom Government, although the Scinde District was established by the British East India Company, itself a limited liability chartered private stock company which had attained de facto governmental status. However, the source shown is a much later (2013) online-newspaper article, which did not mention the source of the image -- I suspect the source was the Wikipedia article itself. The author is identified as Sir Bartle Frere, Chief Commissioner of Scinde, which would be true for the red sealing wax wafer itself, as Frere had a hand in the design. The embossing die was produced by De La Rue in England, but Frere was not the author of the photographic illustration.Fconaway (talk) 07:26, 31 August 2016 (UTC)

I read the file history so was aware of most of that. The stamp itself is more than 100 years old, so as a 2D item it is clearly in the public domain and has no restriction per se. Photographic reproductions of 2D items, like stamps, usually do not acquire a new copyright so worrying about that was not necessary, so, your original fair use reasoning was not actually valid. Whether it was originally copyright of the United Kingdom Government or the East India Company is rather academic due to its age. UK government work is crown copyright for 50 years and normal corporate work is 70 years, so we are way past that on each count. If you can determine exactly who was the original copyright holder that info would be great but I doubt we shall ever really be sure. If you can read Italian, maybe this article can shed some further light on the topic. I might even upload the image as it seem like a rather clean example. Actually the current Sandafayre stamp is quite different from the restored stamp you originally uploaded. Maybe they changed it. More versions of rare stamps are always good, so if you can please upload it please do so and I will upload the three (a red, blue and white/yellow (?) one) that are on that Italian article. Actually the Sanfafayre stamp is already uploaded as File:Scinde A3.jpg and Micheal Romanov uploaded File:Red Scinde Dawk stamp x-cancelled.jpg yesterday so we now have 3 copies. The Sandafayre page has several Dawks. The one uploaded from that site in 2006 is also shown in their "Rare Stamps Gallery" even today (down in the page). There were several good didactic reasons to use that specific image, as it shows the embossing on wax, the usual Scinde diamond of dots cancellation (all of the known Red Dawks are cancelled, but several appear to have been cleaned or re-backed), has excellent color, and has not been cracked or defaced. Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Lead_section does say "Where uncommon terms are essential, they should be placed in context, linked and briefly defined." and also "The opening sentence should provide links to the broader or more elementary topics that are important to the article's topic or place it into the context where it is notable. For example, an article about a building or location should include a link to the broader geographical area of which it is a part." but it also says "Do not, however, add contextual links that don't relate directly to the topic's definition or reason for notability." - I do think though that the neighborhood is important for context especially if people are studying Beirut as a whole (likewise locations in New York, London, Los Angeles, Paris, etc. may emphasize the district or neighborhood) WhisperToMe (talk) 14:40, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
