Conflict of interest in Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Faizan81. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing. Your edits to date have all added links to electricalacademia.com, a site that says it is run by someone named Mr. Ahmed Faizan Sheikh. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Hello, Faizan81. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. Comments and requests[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. Here in Wikipedia, such disclosures must be made explicitly. Would you please disclose any connection you have with the electricalacademia.com? After you respond (and you can just reply below), I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works, and also how to go about getting consensus to use the site more broadly as a reference in Wikipedia. I am an Electrical Engineer and Ph.D. Fellow at Energy Systems Laboratory, Miami, USA. I like writing technical articles, i have my own blog where i usually write about Electrical Topics. ElectricalAcademia.com is MY OWN portal and i have been working on it for last one and half year.

I realized some articles here needed citations for further verification of the material so i provided some references from my OWN website.

I DO NOT have any intentions of promoting or advertising my website somewhere. If you think that "providing references from my own portal" conflicts with Wikipedia policies, accept my apology. I won't do this anymore.

I'm very sorry that I missed your message above as well as your follow up at my talk page.

We generally frown on people adding citations to their own websites, especially ones that are funded by advertising banners. Many many people try to use WP to drive traffic to their websites and this is definitely a conflict of interest.

I would recommend a couple of things, and I can help with this, if you like.

First, I would suggest going to the reliable sources noticeboard (WP:RSN and ask folks there if your website can be considered a reliable source. (The way to do that, is provide specific examples from the edits you already made).

Then, if people there agree that your website is a reliable source, to avoid COI issues, the correct thing to do would be to post a suggested edit on the talk page of the the relevant article, and ask if people who watch that article believe the actual edit adds value to the article.
