The move[edit]

Why on earth was this template moved to User:Evan C/Userboxes/User photography? And what does this template have to do with the German userbox solution? I will admit, I'm quite confused!--M W Johnson 01:01, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

userbox[edit]

Please refrain from editing userboxes as a redirect to your userpage, you should insert the template onto your userpage only. Such an edit would affect all users that incorporate the template onto their pages. I have therefore reverted this edit to the way it should be. Richard Harvey 11:01, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To reply to concerns here, all userboxes are in the process of being moved to user space per WP:GUS. This means they will all be moved from the form "Template:User..." to "User.../Userboxes/User..." or something similar. This is supported by widespread consensus and Jimbo himself. —Mira 12:20, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK... I'm confused here. The userboxes now refer to an individual' specific page?

.[edit]

The idea of moving userboxes to userpages has come about due to the way in which the German Wiki deals with them, However the German Wiki has very few userboxes on it. See Wikipedia:German_userbox_solution.
Also That comment about Jimbo supporting the consensus is incorrect his comment was:-

May 27, 2006 The middle ground is to let people do as they will in the user space, and merely use reason and argument to teach people over time why one ought not use Wikipedia userpages for political or other campaigns.... while at the same time saying, no, really, the template namespace is not for that, that we do not endorse this behavior. This is the solution that the Germans have put into effect with great results.
Or in other words let people do it so that they will note how it gets messed up and then have to revert it all back! I also query the requirement to move this particular userbox to a specific persons userpage. If a user leaves Wiki and their page is deleted then all userboxes stored on it will also be deleted, which will then affect all other users of those userboxes. There are already problems where people are leaving requiring redirects to one page to then be further redirected to another. This could go on ad-infinitum until such time as the chain is totally out of hand. Also: Note the end of the first paragraph of the guidlines:-
Guiding principles
 • If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Many userboxes are of a clear value to the encyclopedia-building project. Examples include those related to claiming professional or academic expertise, WikiProject affiliations, and claiming access to specialized resources and a willingness to conduct research using them upon request. Templates for these userboxes could stay in template space. Controversial userbox templates that have been the subject of edit and deletion wars are best moved to user space. Non-controversial userbox templates can stay in template space until someone finds a reason/excuse to move them.
I haven't seen anything on the photography template talk page relating to a reason/excuse for moving it, this userbox is not a controversial one so does not require moving anywhere. When I noted that the userbox on my page was corrupted I checked it out, other users had also noted it and had posted messages asking why it had been moved. Clearly none of us had been advised that a move was being suggested, never mind actually moved. though the guidlines do require that the person doing the move advise all the users of the userbox about it. It should therefore be returned to its original format. I also do not appreciate people accessing my userpage and changing where it is linked to without first asking me user:MiraLuka please take note.
For those users, who also do not wish to have their userpages continually edited with links, just copy the following and paste it onto your userpage in place of the photography template. It will work as per the original template but without going via another users userpage.
<div style="float:left;border:solid yellow 1px; margin: 1px;"> {| cellspacing="0" style="width: 238px; background: #FFF8DC;" | style="width: 45px; height: 45px; background: yellow; text-align: center; font-size: {{{5|{14}}}}pt; color: {black};" | ' | style="font-size: {8}pt; padding: 4pt; line-height: 1.25em; color: {black};" | This user enjoys photography. |}</div><includeonly></includeonly><noinclude> </noinclude> .... Jimbo very recently proposed the deletion of Wikipedia:Userboxes/Beliefs "per the emerging consensus that the German solution is best"[1]. I would call that support. As for users leaving, there have been no problems like that so far, and I think it would be fairly easy for an admin to undelete the page(s), move the userboxes to a different user's name space, and then change the links to point there.
As I noted in my reply to your message on my talk page, I do not believe the paragraph you quoted reflects current consensus, which seems to be to move nearly all userboxes to user space. In regards to me editing your user page, I invite you to read User:Shayl/Changing user pages, which explains why I edit these pages. If you prefer to leave your page how it is, that is your choice, but it will display broken boxes, and soon redlinks as these temporary notices are deleted. —Mira 00:33, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
