Welcome![edit]

Some cookies to welcome you!

Welcome to Wikipedia, Ernestfax! I am Trafford09 and have been editing Wikipedia for quite some time. Thank you for your contributions. I just wanted to say hi and welcome you to Wikipedia! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or by typing {{helpme}} at the bottom of this page. I love to help new users, so don't be afraid to leave a message! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Also, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Again, welcome!

New sections[edit]

Hi. Got your message - thanks - you're most welcome.

I notice you're very good at including in-line citations, and your Edit Summaries are very full and informative.

Maybe you honed some WP skills as an IP user, before you registered your account - most wise and indeed the norm.

But it seems you may not yet have used editors' wp:Talk pages much?

It's just that when you posted to my talk page, you inserted a new section not at the bottom of the page; it's customary to add new sections at the end, after all other existing sections. In case you weren't aware, there is a tab at the top of each person's talk page, saying either:

New section

or

+

- and if you click on that tab, it automatically generates a fresh section, at the bottom of the page.

Also, you can of course label the section with anything you like - it doesn't have to say "Talkback" - prob. best to go for something more precise, as then the user doesn't end up with the possibility of 2 sections with the same name (not that this really matters - just thought you may wish to know).

If you ever have any queries on WP, feel free to drop us a line, and I'll happily answer them (hopefully!).

Anyway, keep up the good editing, and enjoy Wikipedia! Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 09:19, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User pages[edit]

See you've made a start on your user page - fine.

There's quite a lot that you can put on your wp:user page, should you ever choose to expand it.

My own user page, is perhaps a bad example, as it's become a bit cluttered as the months have elapsed.

Trafford09 (talk) 10:28, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

minor edits aren't what I thought - how do I make amends?[edit]

I seem to have made the same mistake several times. Minor edits have to be far far more minor than I imagined, to count as minor edits. Which means that several of the edits I've done, that I've marked as minor, aren't minor edits in the wikipedia sense. How do I correct or make amends for this?

Hello and welcome again! Don't worry too much about it. I've checked the "minor edit" box a few times on accident. As long as you are not making controversial changes in those edits, and as long as you don't keep doing it after you've been warned about it, there are no real consequences. If you have any more questions, do feel free to ask me on my talk page or email me. Cheers, sonia♫♪ 09:30, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. when leaving messages on talk pages, please sign your posts with ~~~~. sonia♫♪ 09:30, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Sonia. That's reassuring. And sorry about the missing ~~~~ Ernestfax (talk) 10:23, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. (It took me a very long time to become accustomed to Wikipedia, as I created this account in 2008, but only really "got it" this year- so you're miles ahead. Keep up the good work.) sonia♫♪ 10:30, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Previews[edit]

Hi again. Glad to see you're getting into the swing of editing!

I noticed this edit, and your query "Is there any way to preview changes to cites, I wonder?".

Well, cites are indeed tricky to preview, in the sense that if you are just editing a single Section (via that section's [Edit] button), then that preview won't show the effects of changing the cite.

However, what I've found handy in such occasions is to edit the whole article instead of just 1 section, by using the 'Edit' tab at the top of the article. Then, Preview will show you any effects of your cite change(s).

Hope that may help.

Oh - one other thing. Have you discovered wp:Watchlists yet? Very useful.

So, User:Sonia above may have your talk page on her watchlist, so she'll see the thanks you kindly left for her above.

However, if she hasn't got your page on her watchlist, she may not see your comment.

You can avoid this, by either writing your comment directly onto Sonia's Talk page,

which you do by clicking on the (talk) link in her signature (or rather in her case the 'nia' part of her name),

or by using a wp:Talkback template (like the one I used yesterday here, which you noticed, read it & then duly removed),

which she will see & follow to your own talk page, to find the comment that you have left on your page.

Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 10:49, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, I have this page watchlisted. As I check my watchlist frequently, any changes made here while I'm online will be noted and responded to if necessary :) sonia♫♪ 10:53, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sonia :) And, of course, even if you are off-line, the changes will still be visible to you, next time you are. Trafford09 (talk) 10:57, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sonia and Trafford09, and thanks for your comments. I've started a watchlist, and it seems very useful. On cites in long articles, I get nervous when editing big articles, so I really prefer just editing invididual sections. So I'll use a sandbox page in my userspace to format complex citations, and then copy&paste to a live article when it's ready. On tidying up my talk page (like removing the talkback you mentioned), is that the right thing to do? Is there an etiquette about leaving stuff there for a few days as courtesy? Ernestfax (talk) 11:16, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Watchlists are very useful. I've got that box ticked in my preferences that adds every page I edit to my watchlist, and it's very useful. As for cites, there's a tool here that gives your previews a reflist, and makes them faster as well! All you have to do is add
importScript('User:Js/ajaxPreview.js');
ajaxPreviewPos = 'bottom';
to your vector.js (or monobook, if you're using monobook), and you'll see that the original preview and changes buttons have become little arrows. I find it incredibly helpful, and you may too. On your talk page: I don't tend to archive mine very often, but I don't remove much stuff either- it's really up to you. If a discussion looks like it may still be relevant, it's generally good etiquette to leave it in case others want to comment; otherwise, feel free to remove whatever you like. Cheers, sonia♫♪ 11:43, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Sonia. I've followed your advice and created my vector.js page accordingly. I'll have to test it out soon :) Trafford09 (talk) 12:13, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't get that to work with the Modern theme - it seemed to clash with the ajax preview and augmented editor I had switched on in preferences. So I cobbled together some javascript to do a similar thing. It works for me, but I wouldn't know whether it might work for anyone else Ernestfax (talk) 15:41, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow - no wonder you're picking up Wikipedia quickly! I'm in awe. Trafford09 (talk) 17:49, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wind Power in Denmark[edit]

First welcome to Wikipedia. Second, I welcome your contributions to the Wind Power in Denmark page. However, could you pay a little bit more attention to what text you delete and what text you insert? While inserting the paragraph I quoted on the Talk page into a reference, in the text, you even re-inserted the mistake I quoted it against. Another sentence got lost entirely. --Rontombontom (talk) 19:58, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rontombontom. Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I'll try to be more careful. I'm in the middle of adding something to Talk:Wind_power_in_Denmark#Explanation_of_recent_changes - can we continue over there? ErnestfaxTalk 20:06, 27 July 2010 (UTC) (edit - trying to fix link to talk page ErnestfaxTalk 20:24, 27 July 2010 (UTC))[reply]
Hi Ef, could you please comment (perhaps change) the template for list entry in List of offshore wind farms in Denmark ? I would like to have it near perfect before spreading it to other countries (but maybe not to List of offshore wind farms ) . TGCP (talk) 08:04, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It would be a pleasure. I'm on it now. ErnestfaxTalk 08:24, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and don't worry about the missing content, we can finish that later. TGCP (talk) 08:30, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, let us get the template right first, and then we can add content. It can quickly become double work if the template is not right, and content then need to be shifted around a lot. When you think the template is adequate, we can move forward. A possible column could be price per kWh (which is fixed), but that is perhaps a Danish specialty. TGCP (talk) 09:11, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(outdent) I understand. template first.
Possible extra columns: total build cost; average capacity factor; average water depth; average distance to shore.
Extra columns - those are all nice, especially cost, but I worry about making the list too wide. I have a FullHD screen, but most have 1368 pixels wide or similar - is there a problem in having list outside the screen? The UK list with double lines is getting a bit long AND wide. TGCP (talk) 10:25, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think about the idea of including the body of the table within a transclusion, enabling the compilation of regional lists by aggregating national lists? - for an example, see User:Ernestfax/test3
That is pretty nifty, but how do we select and transclude only the ones notable on regional level (several will be non-notable on regional level) ? TGCP (talk) 10:25, 31 July 2010 (UTC) OK, I can see how in the source code. That opens a wealth of possibilities! N2e has longer WP history than us, perhaps he can offer advice? TGCP (talk) 10:53, 31 July 2010 (UTC) Hmm, so far the national lists are sorted alphabetically, but they could be sorted by size instead, that would enable transclusion. TGCP (talk) 10:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've got an idea forming about using Templates to select just part of the table for the onlyinclude tag, based on capacity. I'm going to read up on how wikipedia templates work, to see what can be done. ErnestfaxTalk 11:00, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds hairy, but if you think it is doable, then give it a try, but we would like many users to handle it. A raw list sorted by size from start is pretty much the same as any other way of sorting, so I would not put too much effort into it if I were you. I prefer a simple, robust solution that most people can use, rather than a sophisticated machine. TGCP (talk) 11:33, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
fair enough. I agree - raw list sorted by descending capacity is easiest, then just sticking the transclusion tags in, should be the easiest way to do it.
Here's an alternative set of headings for the offshore wind table User:Ernestfax/test4 - what do you think? ErnestfaxTalk 11:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also good - there are just so many parameters to choose from. If we can somehow shrink the column width that would help. Fx coord numbers may not be spelled out, can that column be specified to just show the globe? "When" is probably too unspecific for a commission date and may provoke unnescessary debate; some readers (not editors) interprete it as construction, others as first power, others as full power, others as inauguration etc. Cap fac may be rare - DONG considers it to be classified (I asked them about production levels) and other owners may too. Depth and shore distance can both be expanded to min-max while keeping column width. I still would like park website to be present, at least for national lists. Is there a way to blank certain columns, other than comment signs? I will try to make an example with our combined proposals. TGCP (talk) 12:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(outdent) most national grids will publish cap fac (or something directly related to it) anyway. Denmark publishes monthly output for each wind farm, making the capacity factor calculation easy; but I guess that would be borderline original research / synthesis. I was thinking of making the park website to be the first item in the references list, by convention. I do like the idea of min-max for depth and shore distance, that's nice. I don't know how to blank columns, I'm afraid. About the column heading, I thought that the table could have an explanation in the notes about what each column meant, to avoid disputes and ambiguities. ErnestfaxTalk 13:57, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am pausing until tomorrow now. Where are cap facs? Yes, borderline. Park websites are primary sources, and should not be used as refs. Columns can have specific width, but wrap-around is forced :Help:Table#Setting_your_column_widths. Yes to header notes. Header can be 2-3 lines high to keep width narrow. See ya TGCP (talk) 14:18, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See User:TGCP/testDKoffshore where the two templates are shown together. TGCP (talk) 14:22, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated that now to what I think is best, please look. TGCP (talk) 17:26, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It seems SnotBot wants to change indentation in the template - I disagree. Example at List of offshore wind farms in the Irish Sea, others will likely follow. Not sure how to keep it right, but should the bot people prevail, it's not a big issue. TGCP (talk) 23:42, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TIV Resolution[edit]

The TIV is a ship prefix. Therefore, if the article is to be moved, it should be moved to TIV MPI Resolution. Mjroots (talk) 17:09, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mjroots. Thanks for that - I learnt something new today! ErnestfaxTalk 20:48, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ernestfax/WindFarmTableRow1[edit]

Your template is generating invalid parameters for the {{Coord}} template. In particular, Denmark is not a valid {{Coord}} parameter. I think you want something like region:DK_type:landmark. --Stepheng3 (talk) 18:52, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh blast, really? Thanks for dropping by to let me know, I appreciate that. It seemed to be working. Is there a template to convert a country name or the three-letter code, to the two-letter code? It's just that the flag template uses the three-letter code or the country name; the two-letter code seems quite rarely used. What's the best one to standardise on, and how can I convert between them? ErnestfaxTalk 19:25, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Coord expects a two-letter code. Try {{ISO 3166 code}} or {{CountryAbbr}}. --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thank you. I'll get the template fixed right now ErnestfaxTalk 20:05, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I used the templates for the current notable countries in Category:Lists of offshore wind farms by country, and it seems rules require the template to be moved to main space, so someone did that. TGCP (talk) 14:05, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great stuff. Nice to see it go live. ErnestfaxTalk 16:34, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and thanks for the programming. Do you have an idea on how to use the entries more widely? This entry could be placed in the wind farm article, and then transcluded into different Lists, while still allowing for entries to be put directly into Lists like now. I want to use entries in individual wind farm articles, and I can easily make a List_of_offshore_wind_farms_in_the_North_Sea by copying, but transclusion is the smarter option if it can be made to work. TGCP (talk) 16:48, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I do have some ideas ... and will get back to you in a couple of days with them, but for now I've got to go put some (metaphorical) fires out. ErnestfaxTalk 16:58, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right, there we go, just in time - see my comment over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject_Energy#Template:Infobox_wind_farm on this very subject ErnestfaxTalk 08:26, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dobrogea Wind Farm[edit]

Hi, Ernestfax. There is a merger discussion of Dobrogea Wind Farm and Fântânele Wind Farm articles. Your opinion is appreciated. Beagel (talk) 11:44, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Sorry, I wouldn't know where to look for information on how to resolve that question, so I'll stay out of it. ErnestfaxTalk 05:14, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox power station[edit]

Hi, I don't know how much time you have, but Rehman and others are developing a new (merged) template for the thousands of Power station articles : Template:Infobox power station (temp) ; example User:TGCP/palo .
I am working on a different layout here: User:TGCP/Template:Infobox power station (temp) (not yet different) and would like your opinion and perhaps help with the code stuff. I am trying to delete the horizontal lines and enlarging the small font. TGCP (talk) 21:51, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Intermittent energy source[edit]

Hi, Ernestfax. You participated in the discussion about the intermittent energy source and therefore I inform you that there is a discussion about merging Intermittent energy source and Variable Renewable Energy articles. Your opinion is appreciated. Beagel (talk) 14:20, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, many thanks for all the good work you have done with offshore wind farm articles. And now your name has been mentioned several times in recent comments regarding onshore wind farms, and I wonder if you could help move the discussion forward by offering a comment or two there please... thanks... Johnfos (talk) 22:46, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Enough of the persistent unreferenced editing to reduce size of planned area capacities. I suggest protection, but I have not done it before. The editor seems to be in good faith with a different opinion from us, not a vandal. However consensus about content needs to be established, and this editor does not seem willing to seek such consensus nor able to supply refs for his viewpoint (unlikely to be a her ..). The editor does have a point about a third list only containing partially approved specific projects rather than areas. Before actually protecting the page, which is an action excluding an interested editor, we should be even more accomodating to other viewpoints. TGCP (talk) 10:19, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
