This is not a Porsche?

In the artcile about Saab 9000 you changed aircooled to watercooled with the comment this is not a Porsche !. I'm not going to say anything about the relative values or each brand, but the watercooled turbo wasn't available until 1987. Before that it was aircooled. // Liftarn

This has nothing to do values or each brand, aircooled turbo engine typical Porsche technology.

I've take some time to verify some sources before answering.

In fact the early turbos were not air cooled they were simply not cooled (that's why they were expensive, they're issued from rocket technology, like rocket turbopumps one side is warm and the other is well... not cool but much less warm).

But the compressed air may (or may not) be cooled. It's if the compressed air is cooled it's better to talk of air/air or air/water exchanger. The word intercooler is also used.

Watercooled turbos were introduced later they became popular in the late 80's they bring no obvious advange in performance. They're supposed to be more reliable. It's possible this may also be a marketing argument the real reason for they use might be cost advantage. IMO a watercooled turbo might be less expensive because it will require less high-tech material.

In seems that the Saab had a watercooled engine with an intercooler (don't know if it was air/air or air/water). The first turbo was not cooled. They introduced a watercooled turbo later.

That's true enough. Perhaps the NPOV dispute page is mistitled? I guess it's newbie-kind to say that their work may be biased, rather than saying it is biased. Still, I'd like to see the NPOV dispute page be the one stop shop for people looking for bias to fix, rather than have such pages scattered between their and pages for attention. Porsche photo

This is not a problem to do this as I have archived the file but this is not the case of all the digital pics I've done for wikipedia. But my photo isn't the central problem. I'm somewhat worried that the previous version of the photo ware lost and that a photo probably scanned somewhere appears as being uploaded by me with the claim "I took this picture myself". Prior revisions of a picture can be deleted without history -- I believe to save server space. Chris K claims he deleted it by mistake, which is certainly easy to do. I told him on his talk page that next time, instead of trying to replace another's picture, he upload it under a different name.

It certainly does break the Wikipedia nature that users can make un-revertible picture changes, though. That's what disturbs me, as it does you.

I would hope that backups of the server are taken, in case someone does a widespread picture-vandalism in this way.

Why did you revert the Augusto Pinochet article to the previous version? It contained a lot of ideologically motivated choices of words (e.g. "alienating the working class" which is a clearly Marxist expression) and purely false information like calling Pinochet's opponents "liberals" when they quite openly called themselves Marxists, communists, etc.

Were Marx and Lenin liberals by your standards?

Pinochet repression wasn't only oriented against communists. Many non-marxist opponents to Pinochet had to quit the country, your choice of words is ideologically motivated.

You could revert the article to the version posted by 128.214.198.95 and then remove the word communist. The word liberal is ideologically motivated too, so there is no justification for using it in this context: "he moved to crush Chile's liberal opposition" - this choice of words gives the impression that the entire opposition to Pinochet consisted of liberals, which obviuosly isn't true. If you would just revert the article to the 128.214.198.95 version and remove the word communist, that sentence would read "he moved to crush Chile's opposition" which is indisputable. Maybe it would sound better if it were rewritten in the form "he moved to crush the opposition" or even "all opposition" -- the word Chile's seems redundant since we're talking about Chile anyway. This is the only part of the 128.214.198.95 version that needs changing because the other edits by 128.214.198.95 were clear improvements to the previous version.

I'm sorry but -except have instead of had- nothing in 128.214.198.95 version is obviously better, all the edit was ideological.

street prostitution pic

These are streetwalkers (probably East-Europeans) in Nice, France. But I agree this is not very sharp and not really explicit. I don't know if we should keep this pic. If we need pics, I could also suggest to search for some Brassaï pics of Streetwalkers in Paris they might be old enough to be in the public domain. I may also have something better in a few months. I have made some (argentic) street photography by night recently and to my great surprise I was asked by a group of streewalkers to take a photograph of them. Thus I have a roll of exposed Tri-X in the fridge where they could be some good pic, but I'm not very optimistic because these pics were made in very low light and I'm not sure to have catched something OK (I mean well exposed enough, unambiguous and respectuous for the girls). Hi, you uploaded Image:metropolis.jpg and wrote on the page "film is public domain". Are you sure? Generally, only works made before 1923 are in the Public Domain, and Metropolis was made in 1927. F1 people

Hey Ericd - I noticed you undid my deletion of the Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, Sir Frank & Ron Dennis bullets from the People in F1 section. Is there any burning necessity to leave them on the main Formula One page? The People section on the F1 page is meant to just be a summary of the full List of Formula One people; Todt & crew are still listed there as well. None of them have terribly interesting personalities (besides Ron being an arrogant prat and Todt having a large nose) so I thought in the interest of less redundancy we could get rid of them. OK, leave those if you prefer, but the list at Formula One#People is meant to be a summary of the List of Formula One people - not a complete reproduction - so I originally chose a few notable people from each category (administration, team management, ex-drivers, etc) to list in the summary. It would be redundant to list every team manager on both pages. Feel free to replace the ones you don't think are encyclopedic with some more relevant people. Crematorium picture is more suitable for the Mittelbau-Dora article or the slave labor article than the V-2 article where we mainly deal with the technical, operational and development history. Pirate Radio: Cultural References

Hi Eric, the line about "Pump Up the Volume" does tie in to the subject because the movie was about a pirate radio station, but I have a question about: "The Clash recorded a tribute called "Capital Radio One"."

I am familar with The Clash but not with this cut, but since they are a UK band the subject matter does not fit. "Capital Radio" was the name of the first licensed UK commercial radio station and therefore not a pirate, while "Radio One" was the name of the government BBC station which was supposed to have replaced all of the offshore stations in 1967, so it was not a pirate either. There is a whole roster of music devoted to "pirate radio" and this is not one of them.

Now the next item: "The album, The Who Sell Out presents itself as a pirate station playing nothing but music by The Who." That does fit in. I also have liner notes by the group concerning the reason why "Wonderful Radio London" jingles were put on the album.

I'm afraid that there's might be a copyright problem : When I uploaded this file (I don't remember the source) I was believing that MIDI files had the same status as sheet music, and of course La Marseillaise is public domain. As far as I remember it's a scan from a drawing of a Ford Flathead V8 diagram probably originating from Simca. I don't think this could hurt and it was heavily reworked but if we want to to be straight with copyright I think it's a "derivative work". Ericd 17:16, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Bianca Castafiore

Hello Ericd, I noticed that you moved the information on Bianca Castafiore from Minor characters in Tintin to the main article concerning The Adventures of Tintin. Bianca's entry now sits with the main characters of the story, but I don't think she really deserves it (not that I don't like her...). In fact, her importance is about the same as General Alcazar's (a few minor appearances and a major one), which does not make her one of the main charaters. Hmmm, but her role is not more important than Alcazar's in Tintin and the Picaros. I think there is a huge gap in the importance of the characters between those listed in the main page and those on Minor characters in Tintin. Bianca Castafiore, however, would be the most important minor character if I may say so... But IMHO, her place is on the minor character's page. Cosworth DFV

"This a legend, the BDA was very different"

In what way?

The BDA is, with the exception of the camshaft drive (gear as opposed to toothed belt)exactly half of a DFV, the heads are almost the exact same design, the water distribution is the same, the bore sizes are the same, the liner arrangement is the same, the crankshaft is obviously different for a four cylinder engine but as near as dammit a BDA IS a direct descendant of the DFV.

The BDA was still based on a Ford Kent engine that's why it had some reliability problems, it had as you wrote belt camshaft drive. However I think it would be more accurate to explain the relationship from the start begining with the 2-valve F3 1000cc engine (I don't remember the exact type), then FVA and DFV. I've verified the DFV is actually a double FVA a Formula 2 engine based on a Ford 116E block. This engine predated the DFV by one year and it was a part of the agreement between Ford and Cosworth to devellop a F2 engine that could be used as a testbed for F1 engine technology. The FVA is what's closer from a half DFV it has a gear camshaft drive. Thus historically the DFV is mostly a double FVA. It's pretty obvious in Cosworth designations : FVA = FV (Four Valve) type A DFV = Double FV The BDA (Belt Drive type A) was an evolution of the FVA : more or less the same engine but on a Ford Kent block as the 116E was phased out. The belt camshaft drive was a new feature that was never used on the DFV this made the engine lighter and maintenance cheaper. Ericd 21:18, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Coup d'Etat and Cote d'Ivoire

What's your source on there being no plans to overthrow the regime? It was reported as an attempted coup in Abidjan -- what other motive was there? -Ben 14:53, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

What was in the news in France. And what was really going on before and after. There was a coup in 1999, I've added this one. But in 2002 there was no coup in fact what happened was an uprising of the inhabitants of the North (mostly of Burkinabé origins), joined by troops and ex-soldiers that were fired from the army as being non-Ivorian. The rebellion had probably some support from Burkina Faso. Of course, for Gbabo its better to call it a Coup d'Etat than a popular uprising. I don't believe the rebels will have been unhappy if Gbabo's governement collapsed but I don't believe they had a plan to overthrow the regine.

In many what happened looks more like the start of civil war than a Coup d'Etat. This is a very complex affair that I'm not sure to fully understand. But it has it roots the policy of "Ivority" (Ivoirité) of Bédié excluding many people from the north from Ivorian nationality. This policy was aimed to exclude Allassane Ouattara to run from the presidential election, but this was as stupid cracking a match over an open gas tank.

I'm no more anonymous than you are. I don't know your given name and haven't tried to find out. So what's your point?

There is group sex that involves erotic humiliation and group sex that doesn't. Both varieties exist and neither is anything new. Both are indisputably real expressions of group sex. Erotic humiliation happens in one-on-one sex, so why the hell not in group sex? There were humiliating gangbangs long before modern Japan, and in many societies other than Japan's. Marquis de Sade knew all about that. So did the ancient Romans and Greeks. So did the Inquisition. So have many angry mobs throughout history who inflicted sexual humiliation upon their victims. The list is endless. If you want to argue that the Japanese invented the practice of erotic humiliation in group sex, the burden is upon you. You must establish that every non-Japanese example throughout history is bogus (presumably the result of a vast conspiracy that planted all this varied evidence?).

Scanning Negatives

I've noticed that most of your photos were shot on filmed and then scanned to the computer. Can I ask what scanner you use (as the quality of the images is very good)? --Fir0002 10:41, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I don't have any scanner yet (I've ordered one that should come next week). I just ask a for CD transfert to a lab (amateur not even pro) that use an Agfa Dlab minilab, CD transferts are cheaper than contact sheets. IMO Agfa lab are the best on the market and my lab has good operators. But there's a minus as I'm limited to low-res scan around 1,5 Mpixels I can ask for 6 Mpixels but it turns really expansive. We'll see if I can do better with my new Epson Perfection 2480, I've ordered an Epson because it can handle Medium Format. However if you stick to 135 I know that the Nikons can be great !

I'm happy with the quality I get now but it's not only the scanner. As I stick to argentic yet the drop in price has allowed me to buy a bunch of used lenses and some of them turned out to be very good.

Well I don't know... But my photo is a proof that she agreed to be photographied. It keeps safe with French legislation ;-). If she get some kind of celebrity with this pic I'll be proud of it as I was the youngest photographer of the bunch... What I remember is that this was the first time I had the feeling that everything comes in the finder as it should be be and "Yeah, you got it right !". I experienced it in a very few occasions during two decades. If she's surfing on the web, I've got free prints/scans for her. And, if she wish to remain anonymous I will kept the secret forever... I've always kept secret about my private life on Wikipedia, but I must confess that, as of today, it's a real mess... What else I had a serious fight with a leaking tap in the bathroom and the computer I use now, is in parts on the floor but had finally agreed to boot.

However life ain't that bad, at that time the French national TV is broadcasting a one-woman show of Noëlle Perna aka "Mado la Niçoise" and it shows that thirteen years of work could pay.

Mike Durant

Hello Ericd. On the Mike Durant talk page you left an unanswered, 1 year old now, question. Who held Mike Durant? And, how was he rescued? Mike Durant was held by one of Adid's higher officers, I forget who. He (Durant) was a valuable prisoner to Adid and was kept in a secret location. After about two weeks of extreme pressure and diplomatic wrangling from Bill Clinton, he was released. Circuit de la Sarthe/24 hours of le mans page moves

I don't really know what you did but I just fixed it. I think you moved the content initially to Bugatti track before redirecting that and then cutting and pasting everything into the Le Mans article, and blanking Circuit de la Sarthe. I have merged the page histories together in the Le Mans article, and un-blanked Circuit de la Sarthe (blanking actually achieves very little and confuses new users a lot) into another redirect to the Le Mans article. Someone moved a large part of the 24 h of Le Mans article to Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe adding some elements about ce circuit being used also named le Mans Bugatti and stated that the French GP 1967 using that track. In fact that was a mess between the Bugatti circuit and the large 24 h circuit. My idea was to save what was relevant for the Bugatti in the Bugatti track article and to restore what was relevant for the large track in the 24 h article. But soon after I realized there was already a Bugatti circuit article thus I pasted everything that was to save in Bugatti circuit and redirected Bugatti track to Bugatti circuit. What are you talking about? When was TDC banned for life? The more I learn about TDC, the worse it seems to get. A moins que j'aie tout compris de travers (auquel cas ça m'intéresserait d'en savoir plus), je te serais reconnaissant d'éviter de provoquer inutilement User:TDC; comme tu sais probablement, cet utilisateur est suffisemment problématique comme ça, je pense qu'il est inutile de l'inciter à faire preuve de sa virtuosité. D'autre pasrt, il y a une procédure en cours au niveau du Commité d'Arbitration pour examiner son comportement, et je n'aimerais pas que l'on puisse nous accuser de lyncher les gens qui ne plaisent pas.

Par ailleurs, très jolies photos, il faudrait réfléchir à écrire un wikibook sur la photographie un jour...
