Thank you for reviewing my contribution on Texas to the Women's Suffrage in States of the United States article. I also updated the Bibliography. I think I'm getting addicted to editing Wikipedia!

Thanks dear Elysia for your great help!

New question

I did corrected and edited all those you mentioned esp citations...omly one citation in my sandbox, first sandbox, that is citation number 4 has an issue. How can I edit that?! –– Fatemeh Saber (talk) 08:49, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Fatemeh Saber, While in edit mode, click on the citation at the end of the sentence and click "edit". For citing web resources, the citation wants more than the URL. It also wants the title of the specific webpage and other information. So you can fill in "title" as "Catharine Beecher", "last name" as "Michals", "first name" as "Debra", "source date" as 2015. Basically you want to give as much information about the reference as possible. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:01, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for all of your help over the last few months. You helped make my experience with WikiEd absolutely wonderful!

Elysia (Wiki Ed), I won't. I have such a new appreciation for bats now. They used to terrify me, but I figure, "If Elysia loves you so much, you're probably pretty great." ScoutHarris (talk) 18:41, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
ScoutHarris, truly, there could be no higher praise. My work here is done (takes bow). Some parting bat facts for your viewing delight:
  1. Bats live way longer than they should, based on other mammals (usually smaller mammals have shorter lives). Like 10 times longer than they should. Brandt's bats can live longer than 40 years!
  2. Nursing momma bats can eat 1.25 their own body weight in insects every night to feed their hungry babies
  3. Some cultures use bat teeth as a form of currency!!
  4. I once wrote a whole biography of a woman (who turned out to be pretty cool anyway) all because she happened to have a species of bat named after her.
Thank you for tuning into my bat broadcast. Please return at any time for more bat facts 😂 Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:10, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Circling back on 19th amendment GA talk

Hi Elysia; I haven't been around Wikipedia this summer and just saw your note that the 19th amendment article is being reviewed for GA status. When I nominated the page for G1 CSD, I saw nothing useful in it, it was in article space too if I’m correct... Was doing this while assuming good faith. ^v^' James-the-Charizard (talk) 16:47, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

James-the-Charizard, thanks! As I'm sure you saw, the student is a new user and I think they were trying to create a new sandbox but got the instructions garbled. Hopefully they're set on the right path now. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:48, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
Hopefully too. I didn’t see he was a student until after I tagged the page... (I was patrolling the new pages feed.) I wish him good luck. ^^ James-the-Charizard (talk) 16:50, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Interviews and subject-authored chapters as sources

Hello, I am working on expanding the article on psychologist Jennifer Eberhardt for my course. I have found several press interviews she has done where she discusses her work, as well as chapters in books where she (along with other experts on her field) discuss the literature in their field. This of course includes research she has been a part of herself. Would these count as reliable sources or would they be considered too biased? Thank you! Quokka17 (talk) 00:46, 6 October 2019 (UTC)

Woman suffrage parade GA

Woo hoo!! Successful at getting the GA. Do you think I should try to get the article on "In the News" or "Did you know"? Any suggestions about criteria for that?--Biotech46 (talk) 14:47, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

I just want to reiterate that you did fantastic work, Biotech46! I think you should nominate your article for a Did You Know. It is eligble for nomination in the 7 days after it successfully passed its GA nomination, so you have a little bit of time to get this done. I have some detailed instructions here about how to nominate your article. Let me know if you have questions or if my instructions are unclear! Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:54, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
There has been some discussion about changing the name of this article. One user suggested I be bold and just do it, and not try to get a consensus. See the discussion at Talk:Woman_suffrage_parade_of_1913. Note my preferred choice of title. I am willing to make the change, but don't know how to do it. Help!--Biotech46 (talk) 17:02, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Biotech46, sorry to have missed your reply for the last couple days! I saw that you moved the article. If you want it at the title Woman Suffrage Procession we can request a deletion of that article so that the title is available. Are you interested in going that route? Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:52, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
Elysia (Wiki Ed) Yes, I would prefer to use the shorter version without the year. I wasn't able to move to an existing title or delete it to make the move.--Biotech46 (talk) 15:54, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
Biotech46, I have requested a deletion of the redirect Woman Suffrage Procession so that the article can be moved. I'll let you know once it's been deleted so you can move the article. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:09, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Sandboxes to mainspace

Thanks for your help with my students' edits! Apologies for the issues with the R12 disambiguation page. I have a question for you - in previous years when I've taught this course, I have instructed students to use their sandboxes as places for practice, experimentation, formatting problem-solving, note-taking, etc. Once students have compiled enough info (with suitable references), I have them create a new page from scratch. I'm wondering why the students now need to follow a different procedure for moving content from sandboxes to the mainspace - as long as the content in the new page is fine, why this more complicated step? I've never run into this issue before. Thanks again for your help! Ninafundisha (talk) 17:29, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Ninafundisha, no worries! Students are new editors and we expect for them to make mistakes, as we all did in the beginning! With our Dashboard timeline and training modules, we've tried to create a "one size fits all" approach to the Wikipedia writing assignment. More experienced instructors can and do modify the curriculum to suit their needs (we are especially fine with this if an instructor knows their way around the website somewhat, as you clearly do).
Our rationale was that students had the best chance of successfully editing Wikipedia if they worked on and refined content in their sandbox, receiving feedback from their peers or perhaps instructor before trying to edit mainspace. With your oversight, I think it's fine to deviate. Best, Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:37, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Elysia (Wiki Ed)! I definitely understand. My students this semester have been pretty reluctant to get started on their pages, so I'm pushing them to dive in head-first. I'll try to monitor their contributions to the mainspace pretty closely, though, in case we run into more problems. By the end of the semester I expect to see some pretty good content :) Ninafundisha (talk) 20:00, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Maintenance tags

Hi Elysia, when you add a maintenance tag to an article, as you did here at Book censorship, please always use the |reason= and |talk= (or ‘discuss’) params, and start a Talk page section to at least briefly initiate a discussion on what the problem is. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 07:44, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Mathglot, thanks, added! Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:16, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

thanks and a friendly request

Hi Elysia, thanks for your help on my students' pages. I just wanted to let you know that my class met last night, and in fact we talked about all of the things that you then commented about today. I was planning to rename the R12 pages before our next class meeting on Tuesday, for example, and I went over the inline citations issue with my student who's writing about Rose Cottage Cave. I would just like to make a friendly request for a little bit of time (at least 24 hours?) in between my students' edits and your comments and fixes. I generally know what needs to be fixed, and I'm working with my students to fix things. It's a bit upsetting for me that the students are getting the same set of critiques twice - once from me, and then again from you before they or I have a chance to fix things. I recognize that we need to get problematic content changed as soon as possible - but we are working on this. Thanks again, though, for your help. Ninafundisha (talk) 21:40, 18 October 2019 (UTC)

Ninafundisha, sorry for the frustration! This may be another benefit related to the above about working in sandboxes or draftspace, however. In sandboxes, it is fine for work to be incomplete, incorrectly formatted and cited, and many other problems, as it is a work in progress that is not part of the encyclopedia yet. The drafting and feedback process can proceed at an easy pace. Once students create live articles, there is more pressure for the article to be "right".
It was not my intention to upset you. Part of my role, however, is to clean up student errors before unpaid volunteers (who process new pages pretty quickly) have to do so. This helps our program maintain goodwill with the volunteer community if they see our program as not creating additional work for them. I understand your perspective as an instructor and hope you can understand why I have been quick to address errors thus far. I will try to delay fixing work from your students in the future, though encourage you to consider having them work in a sandbox. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:14, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Elysia, I definitely take your point about the sandboxes. I have been encouraging them to use these, but I will re-emphasize to them that whatever makes it onto the main page needs to be as perfect as possible. I do have a question for you, which is I'm wondering how to get the automated "This course is the subject of an educational assignment" tag to appear on the talk pages for the newly created pages. I'm not sure how to do that. Thanks again! Ninafundisha (talk) 22:21, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Ninafundisha, I think I saw some of your recent edits that you figured this out, but just for clarification, these edits are done automatically by the Dashboard once an article is assigned via the students tab. To do this manually, paste {{dashboard.wikiedu.org assignment | course = Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/University_of_Florida/African_Archaeology_(Fall_2019) | assignments = [[User:StudentUserName|StudentUserName]] | start_date = 2019-08-19 | end_date = 2019-12-13 }} on the article talk page. Thanks, Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:12, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Difficulty of moving my article to the mainspace

Hi Elysia,

I'm finding trouble moving my article "BATX" to the mainspace as the system yelled at me for moving into an existing article. Hi. I notice one of your students, Hszylit, asserts they're going to be working on Led Zeppelin III. I've given them some advice on their talk page, but the basic concern is because it's a GA, the quality control standards are higher then a typical article, with quite a few reverts of good faith edits (eg: [1],[2],[3],[4]) - all of which are acceptable because they uphold the standard of the article. I'm not sure how to proceed on this; I'd hate to find one of your students inadvertently walks into an elephant trap. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:50, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Ritchie333, thanks for the note. We get alerted when students edit a Good or Featured Article, though not if they assign themselves one. Your Stigmergy edit of last November

I hope you can make time to reconsider that change. I think the core concern i have lies close to your choice of a contrast specifically with "human" in criticizing, and in overriding, the colleague's choice of a single word. This is not a matter like "what distinction is to be made between that wheelchair-bound physicist and a sick neonatal cat", it is rather about a colonial insect whose nervous system is probably too simple to even notice a distinction between the worker next to it and the queen, except in the sense of reacting to any hormone-analog the queen squirts or exudes toward her. I'm not claiming the colleague whose word (perhaps "lower"?) you changed had picked a better word than, IIRC, your choice of "non-human". But i'm pretty confident that a choice by you to put forward at least the germ of an essay about the nuances of speciesism would be more effective on one hand, and more valuable for you on the other. (I think that's implicitly close to your concern, even if you prefer some distinction I've overlooked.)
I've been kicking around this project for abt 1.5 decades before "thinking better of keeping the permissions, so perhaps you'll consider putting some credance in my observations; making your job/project/hobby harder is the last thing i would intend. Thanks for your attention, if you chose to last this long.
I don't recall whether i implied or said i was counter-editing you article edit; on reflection i'll treat it as your business; i'm not really that committed about any insight i might have. In the event i should change my mind yet further, hopefully i'll recall this intention of letting you know. Thanks,
--JerzyA (talk) 10:53, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

Feel free to be bold and replace with an alternative. It has been acknowledged that classifying organisms as "higher" and "lower" is misleading, so that was the intention of my edit. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:09, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

Edited Sandbox - Confirmation to move to mainspace

Hi Elysia,

I have edited the Eleanor Gibson article draft in my sandbox. I have taken away all the bolded words that indicated when we added onto the original article or if we revised the content of the original article. I have deleted the old content of the article in the draft if we did revise it, and just kept the original article content if we added onto the content. I have also deleted the brackets that surrounded the original content. All the edits can be seen through the last history edit by me.

After this final edit, I just wanted to confirm that we can now move this content to the mainspace. We understand that we need to follow the module/training for moving to mainspace.

Thank you for the edits and supervision over this Wikipedia drafting project.

Looking forward to your reply.
