Original Research[edit]
Hi. I just wanted to explain why I reverted you on Massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The problem is that, as you stated in your edit summary, you "gathered that information from your experience." However, Wikipedia does not allow editors to add info based on their own experiences. We call that original research, and its expressly not allowed by policy. Instead, all information must be verified by reliable sources. One of the reasons for this is that it guarantees that we don't have to argue about what's "true"--rather, we just report what other, reliable people have said. For instance, I don't actually think that your analysis is completely true--it is, for many MMORPGS, but not all of them have classes/attribute allocations that correspond to all of those roles. However, if you can find a reliable source that describes those roles as being common across MMORPGS, we can probably add it. One game that does this is Lord of the Rings Online. You can still note that the players in such games still refer to these archetypes by the description i gave, to express what kind of a player they need in their group, etc. Would you please allow me to post my accurate information on the previously established page? - The summary answer is: no. But let me address each portion in detail. First, the youtube link of one person using those terms on one game doesn't help us--that's just one person's usage, and a youtube video is basically never a reliable source anyway. The Warcraft link is good, but all that does is verify that WoW uses the terms, not that all or even most MMORPGS do. Your analysis of LotR Online is simply that--your analysis that the descriptions match a particular set of terms. Please note, I'm not arguing that many MMORPG players and/or sites use these terms. I'm arguing that you haven't provided reliable sources for that information. In order to add it to MMORPG, you'd need to have a reliable source (that means, a newspaper/magazine article, etc.) that explicitly states that these terms are regularly used across the entire MMORPG industry. Let me draw an analogy: If I visit 3 local McDonald's, and find out they're serving McPork, I can't then make a valid claim that all McDonald's are serving the McPork. You're trying to do the same thing with your own research on 3 specific MMORPGS (two of which you don't even have valid sources for).
- Having said all of this, you may be interested to know that we actually already have some of this information in Wikipedia in other sources--note, for example, Tank (gaming) and Healer (gaming). Those articles actually aren't very good, now that I look at them (they also seem to be full of original research). But one thing we have to consider in WP is that not all information goes into all articles. the MMORPG article should only provide a very high-level, general overview of the genre.
