February 2009[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added to the page Lithium-ion battery do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Mion (talk) 15:32, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Gaston Planté. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by some search engines, including Google. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Ronhjones (talk) 23:24, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. The next time you insert a spam link, as you did to Gaston Planté, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Persistent spammers may have their websites blacklisted preventing anyone from linking to them from all Wikimedia sites as well as potentially being penalized by search engines. Mion (talk) 00:01, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for continuing to add spam links. Persistent spammers will have their websites blacklisted from Wikipedia and potentially penalized by search engines. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. -- Mentifisto 21:10, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

There are no goods or services for sale or offered on any page of the site. This is also stated on the index page. The site contains the equivalent of several hundred A4 pages of educational information without any advertising. At no place on the site are any commercial products even mentioned. The site does not solicit contacts from users other than to contribute more educational information to the site and there are no telephone numbers on the site. If you are not able to unblock the site could you please indicate precisely the area where you consider the site to be spamming.

Decline reason:

It is not your web site that is spamming. Sitting there on the internet, it is not spamming. However, by creating an account at Wikipedia with the primary purpose of promoting your web site, you are spamming here. If you are interested in helping to volunteer at Wikipedia, and willing, as we all do, to refrain from writing about yourself and your own web site, band, business, or organization, then you're welcome to create an account with a personal username and jump right in to help. If your only reason for being here is to write about your own web site, since you aren't allowed to do that, you won't need a new account. If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

There are several potential issues here. First, your username closely matches the website you are posting links to. This is a problem, as the links can be seen as self promotion, which is clearly a conflict of interest. When you post the link, you're not going to an article's talk page and saying "This website is a good resource because of X, Y, and Z, so we should add this link...", you're just posting the link in many different articles. This is similar to what many spammers do, where they will post the same link in dozens of articles very rapidly, so it triggers red flags as well. Finally, as I note, your username implies that you are editing on behalf of or with the authority of a group or company - in this case, Electropaedia. Wikipedia does not permit group or shared accounts, since all edits must be attributable to the individual who made them, and this is impossible with a group account. Please review our policies; I'll leave your request for further review, but I note that I would not recommend unblocking unless you A) show that you understand our policies and concerns, and B) change your username. My username is currently Electropaedia. I am the owner and only employee of Electropaedia. Electropaedia is not a trading or commercial site but is a public interest educational site which I write. My name is Barrie Lawson. I would be very happy to use my own name for edits rather than the company name. Would this be acceptable? The web site is clearly an educational web site with encyclopaedic coverage of electrical energy storage (batteries) and electrical energy supplies. Many other educational resources use the syllable "paedia" in their name including the Encyclopaedia Brittanica and the web site Electropedia (nothing to do with me, but came after me). The Electropaedia coverage has unique breadth and range of the chosen subject and in no way should be considered as "passing off". The site provides additional information which is relevant to the Wikipedia page concerned. There are several pages on Wikipedia about batteries and I only linked from pages which were directly relevant to the information on my site. Linking from the page about Plante, who designed the first battery, was perhaps questionable since the Wikipedia page had limited scope, but Plante was the inventor of the most important secondary battery and he was included in the more general history section of the Electropaedia site about batteries. I agree not to repeat this mistake. A cursory glance at the site will show that it is a non commercial site. I believe that the pages about energy supplies add significant relevant knowledge to the Wikipedia pages concerned. Do I understand from your comments that edits can only be added after some agreement on the talk page. If so I will use this route in future. I am unaware as to what benefits "spam" could bring me. The last thing I want is a lot of corresponsence to answer. Meanwhile I would appreciate it if you could restore the link from the Wikipaedia Sustainable Energy page. Thank you in advance.
