Welcome[edit]

Hi EdWalker58, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for joining the coolest online encyclopedia I know of. I hope you stick around. You'll probably find it easiest to start with a tutorial of how the wikipedia works, and you can test stuff for yourself in the sandbox. Check out the simplified ruleset. When you're contributing, you'll probably find the manual of style to be helpful, and you'll also want to remember a couple important guidelines.

  1. Write from a neutral point of view
  2. Be bold in editing pages
  3. Use wikiquette.

Those are probably the most important ones, and you can take a look at some others at the policies and guidelines page. You might also be interested in how to write a great article and possibly adding some images to your articles.

Be sure to get involved in the community – you can contact me on my talk page if you have any questions, and you can check out the village pump, where lots of wikipedians hang out and discuss things. If you're looking for something to do, check out the community portal. And whenever you ask a question or post something on a talk page, be sure to sign your name by typing 4 tildes like ~~~~. Always sign the talk page, never the articles.

Again, welcome! It's great to have you. Happy editing! Iswatch20 (talk) 09:20, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

February 2008[edit]

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Ted Walker, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Business' FAQ. For more details about what constitutes a conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. Thank you. JD554 (talk) 10:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary, which wasn't included with your recent edit to Ted Walker. Thank you. JD554 (talk) 11:09, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ed, You asked "JD554 please let me know what precisely you want me to change."

I don't want you to change anything, I think you're doing admiral work on an important article. Regarding the notices above which I've added, the first one is because I've presumed (perhaps incorrectly) that you are a relative of Ted Walker's, which has the potential for unintentional bias to be added to the article - although it's important for me to add that I don't think you have done so yet, but please be careful. The second warning is just a reminder that when editing a page there is a box underneath the main window titled "Edit summary" if you type what you have changed in there it shows up on the history of the article and other editors don't necessarily have to compare the old and new versions to see what's changed.

Please keep up the excellent work. For more pointers about Wikipedia see the welcome message at the top of this page which has some very useful links for new editors.

Just got your e-mail ... will reply to hockey issue separately :-) --JD554 (talk) 11:39, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:Ted Walker 1.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ted Walker 1.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 14:05, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of File:EricEverard.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:EricEverard.jpg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or what the copyright status is. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the information to the image's description. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 16:06, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have selected a GFDL license tag and added a description. Sorry, I thought I had made it clear that we had permission. I want to be compliant so before I re-publish it on wikipedia so I will wait for your express permission or else allow 24 hours to elapse, whichever is soonest.

File:JulianKulkarni.jpg missing description details[edit]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:JulianKulkarni.jpg is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers. If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. I've deleted this image twice now. If you want to use it on Wikipedia, you must select a licence, and it has to be a GFDL or public domain licence. Images with no copyright or licences such as "Wikipedia only" or "non-commercial only" cannot be accepted jimfbleak (talk) 05:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted again, easyfair site claims copyright. If you believe that the image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release it freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

  • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details on the image's page and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
  • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at the talk page with a link to where we can find that note.
  • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on the article talk page.
  • Alternatively, you may create a note on your web page releasing the work under the GFDL and then leave a note at the article talk page with a link to the web page details.

jimfbleak (talk) 06:38, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have an email from easyFairs asking why the images have been removed: "The photo is fine for me – the image is by stephan [Forseilles, of easyFairs] with no copyright issues – not even worth mentioning him – and it has gone from the entry – thanks for helping out with this I appreciate it"

Am re-uploading with a detailed description of the image, stating that Stephan Forseilles is the photographer, and that the work is released under GFDL. Have also sent email to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org providing Stephan's email address. The same applies to Eric Everard.

Similarly for the Ted Walker image. Although you claim copyright, the image is attributed to a different author. jimfbleak (talk) 06:48, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The image was taken by the next-door neighbour in 1965. I have chosen this image precisely because there are no copyright issues. The author, Tom Hale, gave permission to use the photo which was used for obituaries after my father died in 2004. I am Ted Walker's literary executor with complete rights over his literary estate. However, if you need to contact Tom Hale directly please let me know. I will try to get back with his contact details. The work is in the public domain.

Fair use rationale for File:EricEverard.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:EricEverard.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 14:55, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Roger Mortimer de Chirk...[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your last two edits to Roger Mortimer. I was wondering... you couldn't expand on your source reference could you? You've given it as "The History of the Foundation and Founders of Wigmore Priory", but ideally we'd also have the author's name and a page number. Many thanks! File permission problem with File:Ted Walker 1.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ted Walker 1.jpg, which you've sourced to INSUFFICIENT OTRS OVER 1 MONTH OLD. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:21, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Geocloning has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Neologism as per WP:NEO

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. » nafSadh did say 09:52, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Other projects"[edit]

If you're interested, I'd be happy to work with you on an article of your choosing to help acclimate you to the Wiki-ways. Several veteran editors have helped me greatly in my journey as a marketing professional on Wikipedia, often under the expectation that I will teach others. So I have a duty of sorts.

I noticed that you are a Chartered Marketer and the current article on the Chartered Institute of Marketing is pretty horrendous. I recently brought the Chartered Institute of Public Relations up to GA ("Good Article") status and am working on reaching GA for the Public Relations Society of America.

It's of course easier to earn Wiki-wings on an article without a COI, so if you are helping a client, you have some experience. It's a bit of a corner, because Wikipedians always want PR people to get experience doing volunteer work, but realistically most don't do enough Wiki-work to justify the time investment.

Up to you! I'm here to help if you need me. CorporateM (Talk) 22:48, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ed. As a relatively new participant in a PR role, I wonder if you would be interested in commenting here on whether you feel this template would be helpful to PR participants. Keep in mind, the suggestions made in the template are not actually our policy, but are a best practice according to many - but not all - in the community. The template is intended for the Talk page of company articles for PRs to see. CorporateM (Talk) 19:52, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Have commented - good idea to have such a template but maybe there are already alternatives. --EdWalker58 (talk) 09:08, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Ed. Do you think this part of the template is immediately obvious to you who it is referring to: "Editors representing the subject of this article." This is a difficult part of the template. Wikipedia uses the term "paid editors" but most marketing people don't understand what that means. We could specifically call out marketing or PR, but we get a wide range of people assigned to edit on behalf of the company - sometimes things like the CEO's wife. Other options include "on behalf of" or "assigned by." Thoughts? CorporateM (Talk) 14:01, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
ha ha I must admit I don't understand the concept of *not* being paid for editing - if I wasn't paid my family would starve! If you want to make the template clearer I would say "Contributors who are employed by, represent or work on behalf of this organization are asked to avoid making edits to the article." Better might be "Contributors who are employed by, represent or work on behalf of this organization are asked to avoid making edits to the article. However, we welcome your suggestions for improving content and in particular for correcting any factual errors." I say this because I would have thought that factual accuracy and completeness are at least as important as COI issues. Why scare off people with inside knowledge? Meanwhile I will see if I can do anything about the CIM article which is pretty dire ... --EdWalker58 (talk) 16:26, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Easyfairs logo small.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Easyfairs logo small.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
