WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

HI, Im sorry to send this direct to you but I am unsure what on earth I am doing.. I wish to set up a wiki page and tie it in with another one which is Scottish Hip Hop but Im worried that if I start something that it might be wrong?

Ive looked at the help pages etc, but hmmmm are you able to maybe point me in the right direction?

Thank you

Hi! While looking at the core contest page, I saw that you listed the Protestant Reformation as a core article to improve. I did speak on the comment box from other users, but in retrospect wasn't so sure how the article was to be organized (is by region or a chronological order better?). I thought since you suggested the article, that it would be prudent to ask for your take. The first aspect of the article that I thought could be mentioned in a little more detail (within reason in contrast to what I was previously suggesting) in the rise of the Radical Reformation and groups that formed from it during Luther, in particular the Anabaptists and Thomas Müntzer. If you're okay with this, I'll attempt to gather some sources to improve the article by the end of the month (and later on). Respond whenever you get the chance, and thanks for reading! LeftAire (talk) 22:41, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

I'm still reading a few overview books to see how most scholars organize ... I imagine it'll end up being organized sorta chronologically and sorta by country. With some sections on international movements. Maybe. First is to get what is currently in the article correct and sourced. Ealdgyth - Talk 22:45, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
Cool. I I'll aim to do the same. Hopefully I can get some citations in within the next few weeks. Thanks (kinda didn't expect the quick response)! LeftAire (talk) 00:29, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh, I see :) It's always funny when people get fixated on a medieval date...I can think of several reasons why there would be a little discrepancy, but it's hard to explain to non-specialists. And I seem to have added to the confusion by talking about touring the diocese, which has nothing to do with the date mix-up, haha. Adam Bishop (talk) 15:00, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

Edits to CofE historical matters

Hi Ealdgyth: I hope this might illuminate why Bangor was in the Wendovers' patronage: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=DIXiB0AX-rAC&pg=PA206&lpg=PA206&dq=wendover+bishop+of+bangor&source=bl&ots=s5JFEXQio0&sig=KAmCLNGIoS5_Ud5BThFL6fH_Wzg&hl=en&sa=X&ei=2YINVev1DYL1aPH2gvgP&ved=0CC0Q6AEwAzgK#v=onepage&q=wendover%20bishop%20of%20bangor&f=false M Mabelina (talk) 14:42, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Nobody with the "so-called" surname "Young" was Bishop of Bangor in the 13th century... some bishops, such as Frederick Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol four centuries' later, took the view that is was better to stay away (or appear to be benevolent from afar)!
PS. Wendover was young tho..
Doesn't matter. Neither the Fasti nor the Handbook of British Chronology nor the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry for Richard Wendene says he was Bishop of Bangor. Thus, I removed the incorrect information. And honestly, this should take place on the talk page of the article. Ealdgyth - Talk 15:15, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Entiendo - thanks response M Mabelina (talk) 15:54, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Core Contest

Ideally you'd restore the section & just add that you didn't get as far as you want. As usual, loads of the entries have had much less done than you've managed, & I think it's better to present the full record of aspirations, even if nothing happened. You know it's now open until April 15, btw? Up to you of course, Cheers, Johnbod (talk) 23:00, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Ealdgyth, I don't know what to think about this subject. It's an awfully general name, but hey, it was published and reviewed. I am having a hard time, however, establishing that this is an established topos, and I am interested in your thoughts. I'm also having the damndest time finding proper categories. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 17:49, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Urf. This sort of subject (the "idea about an idea" stuff) is not my strong point. I've never run into it, but it sounds like I might not be reading the subject areas where I would have run across it. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:07, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Totally off topic here but ... Clement of Llanthony is new. I can write about writers as well as bad boy clergy! Ealdgyth - Talk 17:51, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Just seen this - it certainly is notable, & has been on my to-do list for years. I think of it mainly as an art history thing. H Diane Russell;Eva/Ave; Women in Renaissance and Baroque Prints; National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1990; isbn 155861 0391 has a lot on it. I'll touch it up when I can. Done now - went a bit nuts! Johnbod (talk) 14:05, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

I really wouldn't call yours a "reference style". The footnotes are incomplete and some don't have page numbers. It's much easier to click on a shortened footnote to go directly to the bibliography.

What do you think about EEng's ALT on your DYK nomination? If you indicate that you're okay with it, I can complete the DYK review. Yoninah (talk) 21:16, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

It's a perfectly valid referencing style - used in a number of FAs and GAs. And based on a common academic referencing style in history. I'm not thinking EEng really means for the DYK to wait a year? And I'm not that impressed with the ALT ... but whatever. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:47, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
And the reason the ODNB ref doesn't have page numbers is because it's an online version of the printed source which doesn't give page numbers. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:49, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ealdgyth. A summary of a Featured Article you nominated at WP:FAC will appear on the Main Page soon. Does the article need more work? I had to squeeze the summary down to around 1200 characters; was there anything I left out you'd like to see put back in? - Dank (push to talk) 20:03, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Blurb looks fine. The article should be in good shape - I've kept up with any changes that were made and have updated as needed since it got promoted. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:36, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for that "yet another obscure bishop/archbishop wanna be", --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:55, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry for my lack of consistent contributions to the article. I'll definitely keep an eye on the article (as I have one too many articles on my wishlist), and try to add more information as I read. Also, is it a goal of yours to get the article to FA status before the 500th Anniversary of the Luther's nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg (also mentioning the disputing of the fact by scholars)? Just curious... LeftAire (talk) 22:25, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Happy Easter!
