Non-free logo

Hello. Please make sure you aren't using the non-free logos of the university athletics programs as you did in this edit. @Corkythehornetfan: Thank you for the oversight on that, and for replacing it with the appropriate image. On that note, is it safe to assume that if a logo is used on a university athletics sub-article (e.g. the logo used on the Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball page), as opposed to solely the main athletics program article, that it can also be used on the page for the school's band? Marching bands are generally closely tied, part of, or funded by their athletics programs, and most often feature the same logo on their uniforms, meaning that the logo is already used by the organization (which is also the case with the Hawkeye Marching Band). Yes, the logos in the sub-articles can be used. As long as they're in the public domain like Indiana's, you can use them. I've been working on NCAA Division I schools over the past year and placing the wordmark in the sub-articles. Hope that helps! Please let me know if you need anything else! @Corkythehornetfan: Thanks for the help! I have one more question/topic, relating to the removal of the uniform descriptions on the marching band pages (which we've discussed before). As you know, I don't necessarily agree with the removal, given that the template lists a description. However, you did provide an opportunity for me to consider the possibility of adding images, and as a result I've been working on putting together low-resolution images of uniforms (specifically within the Big Ten), similar to the hockey uniform images on certain pages (e.g. Minnesota Golden Gophers men's ice hockey. I brought this up in the help area, where I asked about using the Template:Non-free sports uniform tag for these images, and was told that it would be an appropriate tag to use in this situation. I'm curious if you have any thoughts or advice on this?

If the uniforms have a non-free logo (Iowa Hawkeyes) on them, then yes, I would recommend that license. If the logo on the uniform is in the Public Domain (like Minnesota's logo) and you create the uniform yourself by scratch, then I would upload it as {{PD-self}}, meaning you're the sole creator of the drawing, on Wikimedia Commons. I have been looking at how it might work visually to put the images in the infoboxes, and have noticed that they would end up being alongside the word "uniform" in the box rather than below it, which would lead to awkward formatting and infoboxes that are unnecessarily large. Yes, we can get it to be below the word. Want it similar to Template:Infobox NCAA football school and Template:Infobox college basketball team? @Corkythehornetfan: Thank you! I saw that the sandbox page for the infobox was changed, but is the template itself changed? Also, I saw that it would size the image at 275px, however the number of uniform combinations (similar to home/away or white/color combinations for sports teams) varies by band, and thus some images are wider than others and would potentially need to be a different size based on the number of combinations. For example, Ohio State only has one uniform combination (front and back), while Michigan has two and Minnesota has three. Thus I assume the sizes of the images would need to be scaled according to the number of combinations in order for the sizes to match across different pages. I ended up finishing the images much earlier than expected so I will be uploading them soon, so if it's okay with you, I will probably ask for your help in checking if they are uploaded and tagged correctly. For example, here is Ohio State's: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohio_State_Marching_Band_Uniform.png, though I couldn't figure out how to upload it with the {{PD-self}} tag, and is instead licensed under Creative Commons. No, I forgot to do that; sorry. I've implemented it into the infobox but because I'm new at the template editor, I'm having someone else help me fix it (should be done May 5). Regarding the number of uniforms, the issue is that there isn't necessarily a primary or secondary uniform, simply different combinations used (for example, Michigan State has two completely different uniforms used equally, and Minnesota has three that are used depending on the game, drill, or situation). Would it be possible for the uniform images to be sized so that, no matter how many combinations, a single set of uniforms always appears the same size, and marching bands with more combinations (3 is the maximum for any school) have an infobox that is slightly wider? @Corkythehornetfan: Sorry, I don't think I explained that well. I think it would work better if the infobox were to be slightly larger depending on the number of uniforms, so that the sizes of the uniforms are consistent across all of the pages (and smaller than they currently appear on Ohio State's Page). However, I could also arrange Minnesota's uniforms (which are the only ones that would be too small to see using the current infobox format) in a triangular manner to prevent that. See Michigan Marching Band for what it looks like with two combinations.

Also, at what point is a logo small and low-resolution enough that it is not technically that logo? The helmet logo of Michigan State technically appears on the right side of the breast of the second Michigan State uniform, however what is included in the uniform image is not remotely close to the logo itself. I am going to disagree with you on the larger infobox. It looks perfectly fine and is still clear. Take a look at Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football. Even though the band one is just a smidge smaller, it is still a good representation. Too many uniformed will clutter the infobox and most likely be removed by someone in the future for being too much of a clutter. If the infoboxes are too big, they won't look very clean in the article. If one truly wants to see a larger version of the uniform, they'll click on it.

As for the logo size and resolution... I'm not sure. You'll just have to play with it. If it gets small enough where it starts to get blurry, that should be your cue. On .jpg/png images, my guess is anything under 100px. Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 02:53, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Michigan State's needs to be deleted from Commons and uploaded as a non-free uniform image. The Spartan helmet is a non-free image. If they include any non-free images such as the Michigan State's, they need to be uploaded on Wikipedia. Other than that, I personally think it looks fine. How do I delete the file? I figured it would be easy to find but I can't seem to find the option to delete it. Also, I may consider making the images of the uniforms that only have one combination, such as Ohio State's, the same width (by adding white space on either side) in order to size all of the uniforms equally, and preserve space on some of the pages where the uniform image takes up an awkwardly large amount of space. Well, as I mentioned above, I am having a couple issues uploading it as non-free, as I am not sure how I am supposed to answer some of the questions when entering it as a non-free sports uniform (e.g. the source and original publication, would that be the Spartan Helmet file that you listed above?).

When you visit Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard, in the navbox there is a link that says "Plain form for local uploads" on the right side in the middle. Click it. Select the file from your computer (in this case, the Mich. State band file), then in the "Destination filename:" type whatever you're going to name the file, and then in the "Summary" field right below that, copy the information below (I've already edited it for you):

Licensing

It was just deleted within the hour. Either way - not that I think about it - you would have been O.K. with uploading it. If it was under the same name, it would still show and when the one on Commons got deleted, it would still be in the infobox because it is on the Wikipedia too. Anyway, good job on the files!
