Jabba the hut

hi, no need to change anything: i was just comparing the sections of the article with those of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Firefly#Style_guide and saw there were some differences. comment was to User:Plange that he shouldnt remove the "critical reception" section from his outline just because jabba doesnt have one. in any case, critical reception is discussed within the jabba article even if it doesnt have its own section, so no problem. Clone Wars (Star Wars)

It's up for GA nomination. BTW, I promoted Padme while I was on that page, nice work with it. — Deckiller 04:27, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks; looks like we have two more star wars GAs under our belts tonight. — Deckiller 05:08, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Long time coming

Long time coming, even though I have appeared inactive on my user page I keep track of wikipedia and your work to popular culture articles has caught my attention. I ment to give this to for some time for your extremely great and hard earned contributions(rewrites) to this articles to the state of near (and soon coming) featured status. I look forward to your future work.

Padme

Ready to bring it to FAC? — Deckiller 04:20, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Image use in Star Wars articles

I'm surprised no-one objected to the image use in Jabba's article. As for the funeral image and the wedding image I felt they were really so small and that Padmé was such a small part of them that they didn't really tell us enough about the character to justify their inclusion. I can go into this on more detail on the talk page if you want. I think the makeup image is quite informative and I think it's appropriate to show both the iconic pseudo-geisha dress and the more plain everyday look as well as the cartoon representation. All-in-all I think this is quite a good article. Haukur 20:50, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, diversity is important. I also find that outside of any legal concerns articles can look better (more professional, less fanboyish) when images are used sparingly and only to illustrate specific points. It's always a judgment call, I suppose. I see you've written quite a lot of good articles, I hope you keep up the good work :) Haukur 21:08, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I agree that an out-of-universe picture of the actress would be nice to have. I think the freely licenced one is gorgeous but unfortunately it shows her in a completely different context. The one you just suggested is interesting and it's nice that it's not just a beauty shot but shows the people doing something. The big drawback, from my point of view, is how small a part Natalie Portman is of the picture. I understand what you mean with the caption, it would be nice to have one that connects the picture more closely with the text of the article. Ideally we'd have an out-of-universe image illustrating some specific point discussed in the article. If there's something interesting to say about the make-up then maybe that image would fly after all. Haukur 22:02, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Something with just Lucas and Portman would be great. Fair-use images that aren't used in an article get deleted quite quickly or you can just delete them yourself. No, wait, why aren't you an admin? Want me to nominate you? Haukur 22:12, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Hundreds of dollars

This sentence struck me as slightly odd: "Hundreds of dollars and hours went into making these two gowns". It reminds me of Dr Evil asking for a ransom of one MILLION dollars :) Hundreds of hours is significant; hundreds of dollars is probably not. Haukur 10:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm on Wikibreak

I'm going on Wikivacation for a few days (need to conserve energy; pushing 5 FAs can be a pain); when I come back, I'll push FFIX to featured status and return to the star wars wikiproject in full swing as promised. — Deckiller 20:35, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Influence on Films

When doing a film article, and discussing other films that indirectly inspired a film, ie. elements of one film resurfacing in another, where would this information go? Would it go in the lead section, or would it go in the influence section? Another example would be say techniques originating in "Halloween" resurfacing in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" - hope this example clears any confusion. LuciferMorgan 23:00, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah you've answered my question, so thanks. I have a few film critique sources to back up the different things that influenced "A Nightmare on Elm Street", though I'm unsure if it's influenced films itself, but maybe a little more digging might throw some stuff up. The other stuff I have is like Krueger following in the footsteps of other icons like the Wolf Man, did you have such trouble with Mike Myers? Or was that irrelevant and better used in Myers' own article? The Halloween connection was commented upon one film review, so I thought it was worth putting in possibly.
The Star Wars articles you do seem to be hotly critiqued - I'm guessing its harder to get one of them to FA than a horror film article. I think they're worth FA anyway, so good luck with them - I bet Sarlacc and Max Rebo Band'll be up there soon also. LuciferMorgan 13:10, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Palpatine

Looks like a great start; I'll be the outside copyeditor once you implement the changes to the main article. — Deckiller 20:44, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Striptease

I recently expanded Striptease (film) on the if-I-don't-expand-articles-about-bad-forgotten-10-year-old-movies-who-will? principle, and while it's regrettably short, I think it's now comprehensive. Do you think this could make good article status? CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 20:45, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, with this one I couldn't really talk about what kinds of puppets were used. :P CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 22:44, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you, and congratulations on Padmé Amidala. In your honour I shall add a lengthy trivia section to Padmé Amidala and double the size of her fictional biography. :P CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 06:26, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Congrats

Good job on getting Padmé Amidala into shape and featured! I'm sorry I wasn't able to give you any feedback on it; I'm still trying to get back into the full swing of editing Wikipedia (and during a time when most contributors are fast asleep!). Looks like you did okay without my help, anyway! Keep it up. — BrianSmithson 22:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I meant to congratulate you on this sooner. Well done! Ryu Kaze 12:37, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Palpatine

Might as well just put it through now; I'm not a big sandbox editor, I like to edit in sort of a bit by bit effort. — Deckiller 17:43, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

NotLD

Thanks for your recent edits to Night of the Living Dead. The image you have chosen is much better than the original I found, but your other changes are providing too much "random" information. Keith Wayne, Judith Ridley, Karl Hardman, and Marilyn Eastman do need to be in the infobox since they are credited on the poster and are the "main cast", though certialy not the stars. The musicians, however, need to have some sort of citation, because as far as I know these names are not listed in the credits of the film and have not appeared in any of the secondary literature I used when writing this article, therefore this needs a citation before it can remain in the infobox. Also, the dates and USA as they originally appeared conform to the Wikiproject film manual of style governing infoboxes; please stop changing them to fit your personal preference. Dmoon1 17:47, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

How do you determine the info is random? Didn't they appear in the film? This IS an ENSEMBLE film & this is ENCYCLOPEDIC info. The info regarding the music is readily availabe on the IMDb & various books written about the production. Furthermore, can you cite where you found that the info that the budget was EXACTLY $114,000 & that that is not an estimate like every other source says? A s far as personal preferences go; I appreciate the work you've done on this page, but YOU DON'T OWN IT. SIckBoy 18:03, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Disregard (mostly). I can live with your revisions as they don't completely obliterate my additions. HOWEVER, you do seem to be holding this page hostage. SIckBoy 18:09, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

No hard feelings; FYI: The music used in the film was from a Capitol/EMI Records Hi-Q stock music library, on which the copyright was in the public domain, and cost the filmmakers $1500. It was originally used in Teenagers from Outer Space SIckBoy 01:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

You might want to stop by this page and give your input into this issue. But I still plan to add a lengthy trivia section to Padme Amidala. MWA HA HA HA HA. >:D CanadianCaesar Et tu, Brute? 10:19, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Palpatine

Including dialogue from the movies is completely uneccessary and takes up too much space. Much of the summaries could be condensed, and the biographical information concerning Ian McDiarmid could be put in his own article. Simply put, this article is too long. Maybe we can work together on this instead of making threats, hmm? Treybien 27 August 21:34 (UTC)

Re: Palpatine pt.2

Quotations from the movies are not used in any other Star Wars character article, at least that I'm aware of. So why is it that my removing quotes from this article is a problem? Treybien 2:10 27 August 2006 (UTC)

References

Sorry to be a pain again, but could you have a look at this and check what I'm doing wrong? User:LuciferMorgan/Draft I've only just started (finally), but for the life of me the "Notes" section keeps appearing all screwed up. LuciferMorgan 13:46, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Your expertise are invaluable - that advice you gave me a while book regarding print.google.com is proving a life saver so to speak. I'd just like to say I appreciate everything, and not getting fed up of my queries. The problem with my refs earlier were that they were numbered all over the place and not in sequence - I guess the ref name= part has to be used on all used references. The request for author names of certain references I'm a little confused by though - the Channel 4 review I've tried searching for a name of the writer but it doesn't say. Still needs tons and tons of work the article, but I find it easier now I have it in a sandbox. I'm going to have to go over certain parts where I inadvertently used weasel words also, an objection people will obviously raise when I actually get around to putting it up for peer review (after major work of course - I think I'll have to do a "Special Effects" section, otherwise people will dump such info in a trivia section). I'm following your drafts on "The Cat and the Canary", real interesting BTW. LuciferMorgan 17:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Now I've since saved over your edit, the references appear all jumbled again, even though in my edit I did nothing to the references, only adding extra sections for the article such as "Music" and "Direction". For example, my 1st reference (Art of Horror) appears as number 7 and so on. Am I viewing the page with a certain browser (I'm using IE) or something? I'd really like to know where I keep going wrong, because it's confusing the hell out of me. I use the view option before saving the changes and they appear fine, but then I actually save and they appear jumbled.
Do the references appear properly numbered at your end? Sorry to bug you, but I'd really like to get to the bottom of this. Thanks again for your time. LuciferMorgan 18:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Update - Now they appear ok, but it's the same edit that I was looking at earlier and nobody has since changed it. It seems as a period of time passes they seem to somehow correct (even though they aren't edited by anyone). Another user has suffered the same issue (check my talk page), so I'm wondering what's been going on. LuciferMorgan 20:04, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Final update - this thread (WP:FN) gives a solution for the issue as a few people have come across it. If you experience the same problem feel free to use the thread. LuciferMorgan 20:19, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! Hopefully now I have all the tools ready to continue properly. I'm going to have to edit the 'Art of Horror' ref though, I must have made a mistake on it. LuciferMorgan 20:46, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Palpatine FAC

I reverted your move of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Palpatine, as the proper procedure when starting a second FAC page is to create a new FAC vote and put a 2 after the article title. The Wookieepedian 21:07, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh... my bad then. The Wookieepedian 21:24, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Just a random comment: Did you notice that there was a bounty out for the Palpatine article, but that it's now been blanked? I have no idea whether this bounty was any incentive for you to work on the article, but I find it interesting the bounty was retracted just when it seems Palpatine was poised to make FA status. — BrianSmithson 22:12, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Robots

Re your question on User:Snottygobble's talk page [1]. He is away at the moment so I'll try to answer. I'm no expert either, but I understand that there are two basic types of bots - 1) a completely handsfree program which works its way through a list of pages, makes edits and saves the changes and then moves onto the next page on the list - all with no operator intervention; and 2) a program which suggests changes to the operator who can then accept, reject or refine the suggested changes. The operator must manually press save to update the article. These are "robot-assisted edits" and not strictly bots. The WP:BOT policy doesn't differentiate between the two types. Technically, both types need to comply with the policy - ie. gain approval before being used, not run too fast etc., however, some people argue for allowing manually assisted bots to operate without approval. Personally, I'd agree with that and would prefer to see the policy restrict itself to fully automatic bots only. -- I@n 15:47, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I agree with I@n, although I interpreted yout question a little differently. I would add that it is pretty easy to set up a bot so that it edits through an account, provided the bot is told the account name and password. It would seeem in this case that Maru has such a bot running on his user account. As I@n says above, "Robot assisted" suggests that the bot doesn't run on its own, but rather requires Maru's constant presence to approve or otherwise guide its actions. If you think it seems a little strange to refer to this as Maru making robot-assisted edits, I agree with you. It would probably be more accurate to speak of it as a robot making Maru-assisted edits, since it is the robot that is actually interacting with Wikipedia. Either way, I, like I@n, have no objection to it. Snottygobble 22:02, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Spoilers

I'm glad to see that we share an opinion on spoiler tags; I honestly think that it makes an article look much more professional if it doesn't have "spoiler warnings". I'm certainly spoiled of plots in literature or English classes...— Deckiller 11:51, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to the second this opinion on spoilers - do DVD or jacket covers come with spoilers (no they don't)? I mean, the Wikipedia Main Page comes on, and then you type in what article you wish to view - surely one expects information regarding the film to be utilized? If one initiates a proposal on Wikipedia regarding these spoilers so they can be removed, then could someone inform me so I can share my opinions? By the way, I sense an edit war on the Sarlacc and Palpatine articles regarding the spoilers (good luck DMoon1). LuciferMorgan 19:17, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I've changed 'spoilers' to 'spoiler warnings' in order to clarify my statement - I don't want info that could be considered spoilers removed, but the warning tags that are particularly annoying in the plot sections. I hope my opinion is now more clear. LuciferMorgan 18:31, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:JabbaatCourt.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:JabbaatCourt.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Hi! I love the work you have done on the star wars articles, and was wondering if you would give me some advice and or assistance on this article, since it is the only remaining old featured fictional character, and I want to learn how to write these articles. It needs copyediting and tons of trimming excess info. Thanks! Judgesurreal777 22:16, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello again. I'm bugging you again regarding Witchfinder General because you had earlier provided helpful suggestions. I have self-nominated the article for Featured Article status and was wondering if you could talk a look at it now to see if you could Support, Oppose, or perhaps simply provide additional commentary as to how to further improve the article. To my amazement, all candidates added AFTER Witchfinder's submission have received massive interest from other wikipedian's but not one soul has bothered to vote for my article in nearly two days. Is there really no interest at all anymore in this particular film? At any rate, please let me know if you believe the article meets the FA criteria or not. Image:MatthewStover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:MatthewStover.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link.
