Draft:New England Regional Art Museum[edit]

Looking for help from a Wikipedia editor; this article has been developed with the advice and assistance of several Wikipedia editors over many months and I believe is ready for Wikipedia. I have worked with a photographer who has put some photos of the Museum into Wikimedia Commons to allow me to use them in the article. I would like to add the image at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:I._New_England_Regional_Art_Museum_(NERAM).jpg to the article. It can be labelled <New England Regional Art Museum>. Can an editor please help with both adding the image and promoting the article if you agree it is ready. Thanks.--Dirrigeree (talk) 21:04, 6 February 2017 (UTC) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:I._New_England_Regional_Art_Museum_(NERAM).jpg[reply]

Draft:New England Regional Art Museum[edit]

Hi there, @Dirrigeree: I saw your question about Draft:New England Regional Art Museum at the TeaHouse. I will leave the copyright question to others who know more about that topic. The article looks good, so firstly you should give yourself a pat on the back. I took a quick look at the article and I have a couple of minor comments:

  1. I fixed up a couple of minor things with the references - the only one that still needs attention is the dead link (Reference number 12).
  2. The External links section is currently just a list of bare URLs, with no indication of what those URLs represent. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style#External links for a brief guide of how they should be laid out to briefly indicate how each one is relevant to the article.
  3. The External links section is too long (ten links). See Wikipedia:External links#What to link for suggestions about what to include, followed by a big section on what not to include.
  4. The Further Reading section is even more over-blown (21 entries). See Wikipedia:Further reading: "The section should be limited in size. Wikipedia is not a catalogue of all existing works."
  5. External links should not be included in the body of the article, such as the one to Armidale Regional Council. (Ref: Wikipedia:External links).

I know that looks like a big list, but they are all fine-tuning. The article is nearly there, and once the images are in place it should be something to be proud of. --Gronk Oz (talk) 06:31, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Gronk Oz: thanks for your latest feedback on how to Talk. Now I know where I should reply, I'm back on this Talk tab rather than your page. And thanks again for the tidying up you did. I can report that I've read the "how to" bits you linked, and worked on each of your suggestions: (1) reference 12 was there once upon a time - it seems the Australian newspaper is removing archival stories from public access; I've replaced it with another reference Verifying the same information. The new one has an orange PDFFiller icon attached, is that OK? (2)external links I've deleted all but just one now, NERAM official website, which I've labelled as such, (3) Further reading I've cut to just a handful of entries, (4) external link to Armidale Regional Council removed.
I haven't had anyone offer to assist me with loading images, though I have had feedback about "do copyright owners know what they are agreeing to?". NERAM itself certainly does as it said I could use lower-res images from their site for this very reason. Should I ask the Wikipedia community again, or maybe publish the article (if it is OK to go) and let someone help with adding pictures afterwards? Dirrigeree (talk) 03:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dirrigeree: Looking good! The PDF icon appears automatically when the URL points to a PDF document - I reckon it's a hangover from the old days when it warned people they would need to install PDF reader software in order to open the file. Pictures would certainly add to the article, but I think the reason nobody has answered is because they are tricky, especially when somebody else owns the copyright. Be prepared for a process that is longer and more frustrating than you expect, but which can work eventually if you stick with it and work collaboratively with the people who know about copyright (which is not me). There are a couple of main issues of here that I can see. The first is that I think the copyright belongs to the artist, not to the museum. The second is that once an image is released to Wikimedia, it is available to ANYBODY to use for ANY purpose, including commercial use. So somebody might print that image on T-shirts and sell them, and the Museum can't do anything. Some situations are:
  • Firstly, some works may be old enough that they have passed into the public domain automatically - those ones are easiest. There is a LONG guideline at Wikipedia:Public domain. According to Copyright expiration in Australia, "Generally, anonymous works created before 1955 are no longer copyright. If the author is known, copyright is 50 years after the author's death... Copyright for works other than photographs are based on when the creator dies."
  • You will need expert advice on whether "Freedom of Panorama" applies to the others. According to Wikipedia:Copyright situations by country, it applies to "objects permanently located in public (including public museums)", and may also mean the photographs are free. If you want to chase this up, the best place to ask is Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.
  • If the museum is certain that it owns the copyright then you can upload the photo to Wikimedia Commons and have them send a email release. I recommend you prepare the email for them and get them to forward with their authorization, because there is a strict format for this which you can find at Wikipedia:Donating_copyrighted_materials - scroll about 2/3 of the way down and look for the big blue button "Try our new Interactive Release Generator!"
So ... where does all that leave you? If I were in your shoes, I would start with the easy stuff. Does the museum have anything from artists who died before 1957 that they are willing to donate (bearing in mind the commercial use etc)? They are public domain and that's what I would do first. I know that's a heck of a lot to absorb, and it gets worse when you tackle tricky cases, so start with the easy stuff and go on from there... --Gronk Oz (talk) 06:46, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Howard Hinton requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://adb.online.anu.edu.au/biography/hinton-howard-6681. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
