Image:Phone Socket the principle of operation.jpg[edit]

No its good to have some help in this area.

That is from a BT phamplet issued in the 1970s that does not conatin any copyright. For refernce it is ICS8.2.1 I took the photo of it so what copyright message should I use. This information is in the public domain but I did not want to take the time to create my own version but I will if I have to.

I did indeed draw all the diagrams but the photos came from various sources but the ones with Tom Shiplee in came from him. He is an old friend and used to be my boss who has given me permission to use them. I would appreciate you telling me which type of copyright I can use as when I first put them in ages ago they were removed. Thnanks.


Image:Common control 5.JPG looks scanned in. Who is "Tom Shiplee of Tyne and Wear", is that where you got the photo from? I don't know if anyone has pointed you to the image use policy. You can make a case that historic images are irreplacable and hence can be used under fair use. Currently you are claiming you took the photos/drew the diagrams yourself as you are tagging them with the GFDL and cc-by-sa tags. If you've got any questions - ask me.   • Cant really see why i reverted that. In case you want to revert my revert, open the GPO Telephonie page, and select the "History" tab on top of that page. This will show all the previous versions of the page. Just select your correct version and save it again. This will overwrite my rollback. A man hit this author over the head with an axe I kid you not and is severely handicapped. It is very difficult for him to even send an email. In fact you can see him sitting in the wheel chair with the Duke of Edinburgh on this page. I have all his contact details so can you helps me by telling me how we go about getting his authorisation in the manner that you require?

It's not what "I" require, it's to do with guidance - [2] - to ensure that Wikipedia is not caught out by expensive legal claims over copyright. US (Florida) law is pretty strict on this, and all I was suggesting is that the guidance on uploading images should be adhered to. The References section then contains a {{Reflist}} or <references/> tag which automatically displays the references. There is a brief explanation here or a slightly longer one here. Copyrighted material?[edit]

You uploaded the following to wikipedia under GFDL, but I'm worried that they shouldn't have been:

It looks like they are out of product manuals or similar documentation. Do you actually own the copyright to this uploaded material, or did you scan it from non-free documentation?

This is very old material that I had from when I worked on TXE exchanges 40 years ago and extensive research has failed to find f it is copyrighted at all let alone who the owner although it might be JERC which was disbanded as you will see in the article. BMW E39(5er) Edits[edit]

Dave, your edits on the BMW 5 Series (E39) page were unencyclopedic and have no place in the article for the following reasons:

  • The contribution was factually incorrect: the BMW E39 uses a Dot Matrix Liquid Crystal Display lit by small florescent bulbs, manufactured by VDO (although it contains Light Emitting Diodes to light up icons such as the seat belt and parking brake indicators, not a LED display)
  • The contribution was about a singular problem, which had little beating on the model line. This is classified as a gripe and Wikipedia articles are not forums for owner gripes (otherwise problems such as pitman arm bearings, rattling sunroofs, malfunctioning seats and backup mirror action, aging transmission synchro issues, etc... would clutter articles).
  • The contribution was not sourced. Where is there reliable, encyclopedic information about BMW USA's replacement program, Europe's lack of a replacement program, or even statistics about failure rates? Original editor research can not be added to Wikipedia articles. "On the internet" and forums are not reliable sources for the purposes or Wikipedia article content addition.

You're right though - It does seem that VDO cluster problems have been fairly pervasive (out of two E39s I've owned, one of them actually did have the problem, but not very badly, and only on the engine computer display/radio). Hi Dave,

I’m writing about the layout of the lede section of British telephone sockets (which article you understandably have an interest in – thanks for all your work!); you recently moved the image in the lede

  • from “floating on the right”
  • to “centered below the lede”.

I’ve reverted this, as to my eyes it disrupts the flow, and isn’t standard layout (which is “floating on the right”, as one sees in many pages). (Standard is somewhat described in Wikipedia:Lead section, specifically Wikipedia:Lead section#Elements of the lead.)

Are you ok with this?

If not, perhaps we can discuss this.

Registrar (software)[edit]

You seem to be unfamiliar with Wikipedia (and other encyclopedia) requirements for sourcing on articles. I suggest that you read the Wikipedia policy on verifiability and the guideline on reliable sources. You cannot source a Wikipedia article from your memory, what other people have told you, etc. Facts in a Wikipedia article must be cited to a reliable source. This is particularly true for claims, such as being first, or being better, recognized, etc. Things like number of installations need a source, or the claim should be omitted.

You say on the article talk page that there are no sources, but that's simply not true. A simple Google search turns up quite a few pages which may have the citations you need.

In any case, please do not simply remove tags. They are not directed specifically at you but at the whole Wikipedia community. Someone else my have the needed citation if you don't, but they won't know it's needed unless you leave the tag on. You do not own the article. Another Wikipedia editor may tag it, add to it, or even remove any claims they feel are unsupportable. The article could grow or it could end up being reduced to a single paragraph if no sourcing is found for most of the material. You agreed to this when you created the article. Categories[edit]

You'll want the leave the categorization to experts. Take a look at Category:Silicon Valley and see what's in it. Not software. If there was an article on SBS, it might go into a category called something like Category:Defunct companies based in California. I see that you worked on the article on this fellow, which I have just moved/redirected to "Alexander Lipmann-Kessel" -- which I believe, without certainty, to be his correct name. Did you happen to know this guy, by chance? His name seems to be a bit of a mystery -- my speculation is that the "long" name is correct and the "short" name may result from his having abandoned the "Alexander" late in life on some books he wrote, but the situation isn't clear. TXE[edit]

Dear Dave: Regarding the TXE article, I'd first like to congratulate you on your excellent work in documenting the topic. It really is an excellent article, and I like it immensely, and found it most interesting. I do somewhat regret, however, your removal of the cleanup tags from the article that I added (regarding the two main article issues, a lack of inline citations and excessive detail). In addition, you also reinstated the Acknowledgements section that was present in the article that I had removed. I'd like to discuss these points with you, if I may:

  • Acknowledgement sections are not appropriate for an encyclopaedia project such as Wikipedia, in the sense of acknowledging article contributors. Wikipedia contributors, nor those who have advised them, are not acknowledged for their work in contributing to the article; all articles are collaborative efforts. If, alternatively, the individuals named are sources of content for the article on the TXE system, they must be properly cited as to where that information was published, in what format, and other bibliographic details. For more on how to do this properly if people are primary or secondary sources of information, and not article contributions such as photographs or copywriting, I would like to draw your attention to Wikipedia:Citing sources on how to do this. Please note that if that information they have contributed is not published in a reliable source, this is classed as original research and is not appropriate for Wikipedia; please see Wikipedia:No original research for more information on why this is Wikipedia policy and how to tell the difference between types of sources. Statements that are either not referenced at all or are not referenced to a reliable source published externally to Wikipedia, in the sense that WP:RS defines it, must sadly be removed as original research or unreliably sourced material.
  • References on Wikipedia must be directly attributed to the text that the information is from. Wikipedia:Inline citations gives more information on how to do this. I understand the volume of text in the TXE article makes this an extremely difficult endeavour; therefore, I tagged the article as needing work in this area so that other individuals can assist in the research process of documenting the explicit sources for each factual element, as the page thus gets added to the appropriate cleanup category.
  • Granularity out of proportion to relevance is a serious issue also (for which I will not go into the guidelines; WP:MOS et cetera likely contain all you can stand). The style and depth of detail of the article, as it stands, is comprehensive and interesting, but would be more appropriate to a book on the subject rather than encyclopaedia article. The article needs, as good articles on Wikipedia do, to be correctly geared to Wikipedia's target audience. This means that the very explicit technical detail in the article may need toning down a shade, and the style be brought more in line with other articles on Wikipedia.

I fear, a shade, that you may have developed the article as an island unto itself rather distanced, perhaps, from the general method of writing employed in Wikipedia. I would like to invite you to have a look at some of the featured articles elsewhere on Wikipedia as a guide for the style and approach, and how sources must be correctly referenced. I would also like to invite you to reinstate the two cleanup tags and (re) remove the inappropriate acknowledgements section, drawing your attention to the notion that Wikipedia articles are not owned by those editors who have invested the most time on them, and external editing and criticism are not only to be expected but are an intrinsic part of our editing process.

Once again, thank you for your hard work and application of your indepth expertise in developing an excellent article, albeit one that will be more excellent with editing. I do, of course, understand that you have a wealth of personal experience in this subject and indeed, I don't actually doubt that the sourceless information is probably correct. Unfortunately, however, Wikipedia doesn't publish information based on personal experience -- this is, in fact, the definition of original research, as Wikipedia:No original research talks about. It's regretful, but we can't actually accept information just on the basis of your experience. This is non-negotiable Wikipedia policy, as Wikipedia is a so called "tertiary source" -- all material must come from referenced sources. Please read the following for more information:

Thankfully I fully suspect that the actual technical detail about TXE actually can be sourced as it is reasonably well discussed. This is why the tags need to go there, as other editors who work on cleanup can then hunt down sources with which to reference the claims.
Now, as for the Acknowledgements section -- please understand that whilst I appreciate your desire to thank and recognise your collaborators, Wikipedia does not credit article contributors, but it does cite sources. It can't stay there, as personal content on Wikipedia pages is considered vanity publication. You simply cannot have it in the article. I'm sorry if you think I'm being a "jobsworth" by insisting on this, Dave, and please be assured that I am neither the only administrator to be accused as such. The content standards of Wikipedia are what they are, until such a time as the community decides to modify them by consensus. Neither of us can overrule community standards.
Finally, and most importantly; please do not revert the removal of content that does not adhere to Wikipedia policies. I really do not want to be heavy handed with you, Dave, as I know you are a committed and valuable editor who has indepth personal knowledge of your topic. I've done some work to help you with the above[edit]

Dear Dave: I think it would be really, really sad for all of these great, historically-valuable images to be deleted from Wikipedia (as listed above). I totally take onboard what you say about people being more willing to simply tag things than assist with article work. I also believe you have genuinely received permission from the image contributors for these images, but the sad problem is that we do not have any evidence on Wikipedia of this other than your word. Therefore, I've gone the extra mile in this case, and have cross-referenced a list of the above images with copyright problem by their named contributor, so we can work together to stop them being deleted. It has taken me quite a lot of work to do this.

This means you can:

  • Write a "round robin" email addressed to all of the following names:
  • BT Archives, Mick Gallagher, Christopher White, Andy Knott, Harvey Berry, John Vickers, Ken Coulson, Graham Bonson, Peter Eyre, Tom Shiplee.
  • Copy and paste the list of images by contributor, below, into the body of the e-mail.
  • Ask them to reply to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, carbon copying nicholas.turnbull@gmail.com, making the following declaration:
  • I hereby give unconditional permission to the Wikimedia Foundation to use the images listed for any purpose, including relicensing under the GNU Free Documentation License and CC-BY-SA 3.0, unless otherwise specified.

I'm trying to find the location of the Highgate Wood telephone exchange in order to geocode the article. Is there any information in the sources? The Muswell Hill exchange exchange code LNMUS is fairly near Highgate wood google maps streetview and used to pilot new technology news. Could they be the same exchange?
