Trimeresurus mangshanensis[edit]

Hi Dan! While I'm sure you acted in good faith, there are good reasons why the Trimeresurus mangshanensis article is not called Zhaoermia mangshanensis. Specifically, it was decided some 18 months ago that we follow the ITIS taxonomy for all of these snake articles, which does not recognize Zhaoermia. ITIS will probably do so in the future, but not yet. Patience! There are references to ITIS in the article, as well as a link to Zhaoermia mangshanensis at the NRDB, so it's not like we were unaware of the 2004 proposal by Gumprecht and Tillack. In general, though, there needs to be a consensus before a page like this, which has been edited frequently, can be moved. (PS -- Please answer here, as I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jwinius (talk) 13:59, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hope i am replying correctly to this.
I am about to start some more research to clarify this point, but the paperwork i have does lead to the clasification being Zh. and prior to that it was reconised as Ehrmia, which is actually the genus name of a locust, hence the changes proposed by Gumprecht.
Thank you for correcting my errors though, i was unawear that the name is not "officially" reconised.
This is old news. As for any name being "officially" recognized, that's only according to the ICZN. However, as opposed to taxonomy, that organization only concerns itself with nomenclature: whether names for animals are valid or not. For a taxonomy source, a choice always has to be made and we selected ITIS because it is widely recognized among herpetologists as being the most authoritative currently available. It can also be accessed online. We started out following the taxonomy provided by the more up to date New Reptile Database (NRDB), which does recognize Zhaoermia, but after many inconsistencies were discovered, we abandoned it in favor of ITIS. The latter may be more conservative (some would say less current), but at least it's consistent. I hope this helps to explains the situation. --Jwinius (talk) 16:22, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
