Writing about oneself[edit]

Mr Robertson, although this is not explained to new users as well as it should be, Wikipedia is not a place like Facebook or LinkedIn for people to tell the world about themselves. Thank you for the link. I was unaware that I could not offer a current picture of myself in my own article. I did not create the original article. My intention was only to update the article as the previous picture posted before was over 10 years old. Having read the rules, can you explain how my photo violated the requests? You can certainly offer a current picture, but I see in the article history that you have also edited the text quite extensively in the past, and that is what I am advising against - best practice is to suggest alterations on the article talk page, and let uninvolved users decide.

The photo should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, a media file repository which holds images for all the Wikimedia projects. The starting place is Commons:Upload. Before the photo can be used the actual copyright owner (presumably Aaron Munter) must make a formal copyright release, as described in Commons:OTRS. More background in WP:Donating copyrighted materials. I am sorry that this is so complicated, but copyright law is complicated, and copyright is a serious issue for Wikipedia. Thank you for the explanation. All the editing I did was backed up by references to external sources, which I thought was correct procedure. Now that I understand the concern, I will refrain from editing my own information, but everything I posted, I made every effort to do so following Wikipedia guidelines. The copyright of the photo belongs to me, the credit to Aaron Munter was simply a credit, as the photo was a gift to be used for these specific purposes. If Aaron Munter took the photo, we have to assume that legal copyright belongs to him, unless he has explicitly assigned it to you and you can provide proof of that. When you say "these specific circumstances", release under a free license implies permission to readers to copy, modify and re-use for any purpose including commercial, and the actual copyright owner needs to understand and agree to that. "Wikipedia only" or "educational and non-commercial purposes only" are not acceptable restrictions. I think it likely that Munter will have to make a release, but there is a link from C:Commons:Upload help where you can explain the circumstances and get expert advice about that.
