I am proven wrong. I apologize for my out-of-place behavior; it was never my intention to come across as being presumptuous. Storm of the month
'Typhoon Fanapi' is Storm of the Month

Typhoon Fanapi approaching Taiwan

Early on September 14, the JMA reported that a tropical depression had formed east of Taiwan. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center soon designated the depression as 12W with PAGASA naming it Inday shortly thereafter. Later on the same day, the tropical depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and was officially given the name Fanapi by the JMA. On September 16, the storm further intensified into a severe tropical storm. That same day, the JMA further upgraded it into a typhoon. Fanapi turned west and intensified into a category 1 typhoon that night. On the following day, the storm further intensified into a category 2 typhoon. On September 18, the storm further intensified to a Category 3 typhoon and moved straight into Taiwan. It made landfall in Hualien County at 8:40 a.m. (10.40am AEST) on September 19, with winds of 162 kilometres (101 mi) and across the island at a speed of 20km/h. Shortly after its landfall, it moved south and again turned east and rapidly weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm. It had a Category 1 equivalent strength at that time. At 06:00 PM (Local time), the typhoon went back into the ocean. Post Storm Analysis proved that the system stayed on land for 9 hours approximately. The storm made its second landfall at Zhangpu County, Zhangzhou, Fujian province, China, at a Category 1 Typhoon intensity. The Storm caused a large scale damage to Taiwan. In the early hours of September 21, Fanapi weakened into a tropical depression over Guangdong province, China. On Septemner 22, Fanapi dissipated completely.

Hurricane Bonnie 1998

We have a problem! There is a vandalism on Hurricane Bonnie (1998). It says that reached Category 5 hurricane. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Khaled98 (talkcontribs) 23:58, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry to do this, but this edit was rather poor from an experienced user as yourself.

  1. When you update the infobox, you have to update the prose as well, and that counts updating the ref in the article. Otherwise, it's useless, especially when you leave the new ref hidden (or, as another person did in another article, put it in the edit summary, which you've been known to do).
  2. You do know that not every country uses USD? That source you was from Belize, so wouldn't you think the dollar amount it was talking about would be in Brazil dollars, not USD?
  3. Also, if you had taken an extra step, you would've noticed your new source is in fact a day older than the previous source. Generally the damage total goes up in the weeks after a storm, you know.

As I said, I'm sorry for doing this publicly, but it's a bad habit to get into. Please be more careful next time. Hurricanehink (talk) 15:30, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

Ugh, you did it again. Here you used a source from Belize and put it in as USD. There is a difference in currencies, you know. Hurricanehink (talk) 16:08, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
No, the infrastructure was never that high, so you couldn't add them together. Hurricanehink (talk) 17:14, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! A tag has been placed on List of Louisiana hurricanes (2000–present), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your reasoning on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. 11E

As if i cant guess - where did you get the confirmation for 11E = Hermine? Theres no TCR yet for either system.Jason Rees (talk) 14:31, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Hmm ok you surprised me :P - Message from Hink "Wait for the TCR - We still don't know if they were the same tropical cyclone". Allthough personally i see where you are coming from. Jason Rees (talk) 16:44, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
From Hink: I think they should remain separate for now as 11E dissipated without question. If it's the remnant low pressure area, then it's a new tropical cyclone. If the AL__ number gets removed in BT (like Vamei), or there is a note on the TCR then we will know that it is a continuation of 11E.Jason Rees (talk) 17:04, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Wrong

I am NOT disrupting Wikipedia. I am simply stating the facts. One, the NCH's Surface Pressure map indicated Tomas's center of low pessure moving RIGHT INTO the neighboring storm's. Second, I even witnesses this collision course CLEARLY on satellite loops. If I was REALLY trying to commit vandalism, then I bet you that Wikipedia would become an unbelievable mess. I'm just trying to share my knowledge with the world, just like you and the other users are (Not that I reverted your edits). Oh, and about Tropical Storm Georgette, at least one other user agreed with me about my edits. First of all, the NCH, surface maps, satelite images, and even the media converge that Georgette's REMNATS AT LEAST did reach ARIZONA before TOTAL dissipation. even the tropical updates o the Weather Channel stated the Georgette managed to make it into the SOUTHWESTERN PART of Arizona. PLease, I never make edits with multiple sources to back me up, evn if they expired, or if I simply don't state them. Besides, sometimes you make confusing edits too (Not like I revert them without taking a close look at them). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.197.241.2 (talk) 00:27, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Heads up

Laurences BOM TCR is up and is worth a read.Jason Rees (talk) 16:52, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Hermine and TD 11E were the same area of low pressure

The Hermine report states that the low associated with TD 11E developed into Hermine. I'm not sure Lixion could have stated it clearer. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:06, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

They're doing it this way because it's the only real way of handling it within the two basin HURDATs. There is confusion within some older seasons as Atlantic tropical cyclones which originated within the Eastern Pacific as systems of tropical storm strength somehow aren't within the Eastern Pacific HURDAT. This should be rectified when the hurricane reanalysis gets into the 1940s. I would just like this dealt with in a similar manner within the project. If 11E and Hermine both have articles, so should Alma and Arthur, and Fifi and Orlene, and so on. Thegreatdr (talk) 05:27, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Look at the Fifi and Orlene tracks and get back to me. They don't join up, and even though NHC believed one thing, EPHC believed another when it came to the formation of Orlene. 11E/Hermine and Alma/Arthur are actually more clear cut cases for one cyclone than Fifi/Orlene, as there is no disagreement between the storm reports of 11E/Hermine and Alma/Arthur. Thegreatdr (talk) 05:39, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Responded to your e-mail

I don't have a guide to the old recon format, but I included someone currently involved in hurricane recon, and hopefully they have something on station which details the old format. I'm somewhat surprised Chris doesn't have that online within the scanning project web page...it would be a nice addition. If that runs into a dead end, I can e-mail Andrew Hagen for you, who dealt with recon reports during an even older time frame, 1944-1953. Thegreatdr (talk) 23:30, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

11E

Before you merge, there isn't anything new that we know now. It was not one continuous tropical cyclone. We don't have to automatically merge them together. --Hurricanehink (talk) 16:42, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

...yea, redeveloped. The same thing happened with Bret 93. It redeveloped into Greg into the EPAC, but as they weren't one continuous tropical cyclone, they aren't in the same article. Similar story with Alma-Arthur. As I said before, they don't have to be automatically merged together, considering each storm did so much on their own. --Hurricanehink (talk) 16:47, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Tornado lists

I removed some that I thought were not noteworthy. The Portugal one I agree should have been kept, I apologize if I deleted that one. The Omeka article's existence/naming

There are content and record issue disputes in the talk page, which have lowered its status to Start and added a factual tag to the main page. Respond to these matters when you get a chance. I think it might be best to rename the article, which would resolve the impact section dispute entirely. Thegreatdr (talk) 14:12, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Cyclone Tasha

Hi. When I added the 2010 Queensland floods article as a see also, I was referring to the most recent floods that occurred alongside and prior to Cyclone Tasha throughout Queensland. Perhaps we should have a "March 2010 Queensland floods" and a "December 2010 Queensland floods" article. When the new information is added regarding the most recent floods, I suggest re-adding that link to the article on the Australian cyclone season. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 17:09, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

General ramblings

Could you send an email to BoM to check up on 07 and 08U, im rather busy with a few other personal matters. If i were to guess them i would probably guess that ones Pre Vania (Don't shout, whinge, moan etc :P) and the others the Low Perth's currently warning on thats gonna make landfall soon (see Todays Perth TWO). Whilst im on the subject of Aus/SPac the tough that you have associated with 04F is also associated with pre Vania and probably has caused some more flooding within Australia, can you check it out please? Oh PS judging by the latest fixes by CPHC TCWC Brisbane and SAB, Nadi should be naming at 18z whilst JTWC will iniate on 05/06P See you later.Jason Rees (talk) 17:01, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you Cyclonebiskit for the review of TS Rachel for GA! I have addressed the issues you had before making a decision. However, I was unable to find more on where the remnants of Rachel went, so I just left it off at dissipating over Texas. Again, thank you for the review --12george1 (talk) 22:53, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Megaguirus!!

Hello. I've started a review on the article about Megaguirus which you have nominated. There are some issues about the sources I've asked about. When you have looked at them, I'll be happy to go over the article further. Always fun to read about Kaiju. Cheers! Andrzejbanas (talk) 23:02, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi! I noticed your activity as a Good Article reviewer, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:26, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Aus 09-10 SE

Can you double check the damages since you ussually have a better idea than myself when it comes to these things. Thanks. Jason Rees (talk) 06:04, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Oops...

Sorry about that strange edit to the Aus 10-11 Cyclone season. I've actually flown up to Townsville to chase Cyclone Yasi but the browser I'm currently using is pretty bad and seems to cut off at a certain point when it uploads large blocks of text...at least I think that's what happened.

I won't make anymore edits unless I can get on a decent computer in case it does that again, thanks. Cyclonica (talk) 18:39, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Cyclone Yasi

Hi. According to this public advisory and track map, the cyclone is likely to make landfall in Australia as a 100+ kt system and may well have winds topping 130 mph maximum sustained. So, since it's likely to be above a cat. 5 on the Australian scale, that's why I added it. Is there any harm in listing the potential landfall as an Australian cat. 5? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 19:42, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi, I've been trying to bring my map into line with yours and get matching data onto Talk:2010–11 South Pacific cyclone season/tracks. I think I've got it all straight except that I can't match your last point for Zelia. What source are you using for this?--Keith Edkins ( Talk )

Thanks.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 15:49, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Hurricane Andrew Track

Hello. I was looking at the path for Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and I think it is wrong. If Andrew supposedly made landfall in Florida as a Category 5 hurricane, then why is the mark at landfall Category 4 colored? I was just wondering if the path was wrong, or if Andrew making landfall as a Category 5 hurricane was wrong. --Ryder Busby (talk) 21:35, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Oh, okay. Just making sure. Thank you,--Ryder Busby (talk) 21:49, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
